  • NSCDC personnel charged with murder

    A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel, Kehinde Osho, who allegedly shot and killed a man, on Friday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Osho, whose address was not provided, is facing a count charge of murder, but he pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Oladele Adebayo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 18, 2018, at 9.00p.m., on Pipeline Way, Oke-Ado, Lagos.

    Adebayo said that the accused shot Mr Taofeek Andulqadir, 31, with a gun on the head in contravention of Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate O.O. Olatunji, however, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, and ordered that the case file should be sent to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    He adjourned the case until Feb. 7, for mention.

  • NSCDC trains 70 security guards in C/River

    The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) has trained no fewer than 70 private guards from 20 security outfits in Cross River.

    The 3-day training was aimed at building the capacity and knowledge of the private security guards towards the protection of companies, schools, government agencies and others.

    Speaking on Sunday in Calabar, Mr Stephen Lar, Commandant of NSCDC in the state, said that the corps was saddled with the responsibility of monitoring, supervising and training private guards companies in the country.

    Lar said that the training was timely in view of the present security challenges in the country, adding that Cross River was currently faced with cases of cultism, armed robbery, bunkering and other social vices.

    “It is on this note that we thought it necessary to collaborate with the private companies to ensure that we nip this crime in the bud. I am happy that you were trained on Information gathering, fitness and guard duties.

    “I have gone through the syllabus that you were trained and I have seen that you have a greater role to play to ensure that Cross River is secured, free of crime and criminality.

    “No security outfit can succeed without information. Security of a place does not mean carrying guns alone, it means getting the information as to what is about to happen so that we can nip it in the bud.

    “You are going back to the grassroot, you operate at different business centres, you are bound to hear information and see things; I urge you to report such to the NSCDC and other security agencies,’’ he said.

    He urged other companies to also send their guards to the NSCDC for special security training.

    Also speaking, Mr JamHil Ogwumike, the NSCDC Deputy Commandant in-charge of Private Guards Company, said that the training was carried out with a view to curb the menace of social vices associated with the yuletide season and beyond.

    Ogwumike lauded the participants for their good conduct during the training, adding that the knowledge impacted on them would expand their approach to security issues.

    Responding on behalf of the participants, Mr David Akpan, from Great Hope Security Limited, thanked the NSCDC for the training, saying that they have learnt a lot on how to police their environment.

  • Christmas NSCDC deploys 50 thousand officers

    Ahead of the yuletide season, the Commandant General (CG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Muhammadu, has ordered immediate deployment of over 50 thousand personnel. Sniffer dogs, specialised Units such as SWAT, CBRN, Emergency and Rescue Team, Ambulances and Mobile Surveillance Vehicle are also part of the deployment to every nooks and crannies of the country to beef up security and ensure a hitch free celebrations.

    The Commandant General gave this directives, while addressing his management team in Abuja. The deployment is with immediate effect to all strategic locations nationwide. He urged all States Commandants to ensure that all black spots, shopping malls, recreation centres, markets, worship centres, hotels and critical infrastructure and assets are well manned and secured.

    In the same vein, the Commandant General has cancelled all leave applications of senior officers and directed that those on leave be recalled back to duty during this yuletide season in order to ensure effective deployment, monitoring and supervision considering the fact that people who engaged in nefarious activities usually take advantage of festive periods to perpetrate evil when the people will be in the mood of celebration.

    According to a statement issued yesterday by the NSCDC spokesman, Emmanuel Okeh, the NSCDC boss called for synergy among security Agencies at this crucial period and warned the corps personnel to be civil and diplomatic in the discharge of their duties bearing in mind that anyone fingered in any form of misconduct or compromise shall be dealt with accordingly.

  • NSCDC arrests 115 in Kwara

    The Kwara Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) on Friday said it had arrested 115 suspects for different offences since January.

    The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Adeyinka Fasiu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in his office in Ilorin.

    Fasiu said the command arrested 115 suspects for 10 different crimes committed, with most of them settled out of court while some were undergoing court processes.

    “We were able to settle some cases out of court; a total number of 78 arrests were settled through the Alternative Dispute Unit,’’ he said.

    The Commandant further said that the rate of crime in the state was worrisome, especially among the youths with most of those arrested below 30 years of age.

    “Most of these boys are products of broken homes in which the parents are divorced and there is no proper arrangements for the children’s upkeep, so they end up dropping out of school and joining bad gangs.

    “Some parents and guardians also have nonchallant attitude toward their children and so they do not counsel them and guide them right.

    “ This is resulting in most youths misbehaving and getting involved in criminal activities,” he said.

  • NUJ suspends three members for flouting boycott order

    The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ ), Nasarawa State Council, has sanctioned three of its members for violating its order to boycott the state government activities.

    The Chairman of the chapel, Mr Suleiman Abubakar, announced the suspension while addressing newsmen after a meeting of the chapel on Friday in Lafia.

    According to him, Mr Umar Mohammed of the Punch newspaper, Mr Linus Oota of the Sun and Mr Igbawase Ukumba of ThisDay are suspended from the union for three months.

    Abubakar said that the three journalists covered the inauguration of the state commissioners on Thursday by Gov. Umaru Al-Makura.

    He noted that the chapel had directed its members to boycott activities of the government and those of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    The chairman said that the chapel gave the boycott directive following expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum it gave the government over assault on two journalists by NSCDC.

    He said that the chapel gave the government 24 hours to sack Mr Abdullahi Oseze, the Director-General of the state Pension Bureau Office, and two others for their alleged roles in the journalists’ attack.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the journalists were brutalised on Dec. 14 by personnel of the NSCDC attached to the office for attempting to snap names of de-listed pensioners.

    The assaulted journalists are Mr Rabiu Omaku of the Universal Reporters Online and Gambo Ahmed of the Peoples Daily newspaper.

    Commenting ThisDay and Punch reporters correspondents admitted violating the order, but said they were carrying out their duties as instructed by their offices.

  • Yuletide: NSCDC deploys 800 officers in Yobe

    The Yobe State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed about 800 of its men across the state to provide security during the Christmas celebration.

    The state Commandant, Mr Ayinla Olowo, made the disclosure on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu.

    “The 800 personnel deployed across the 17 local government areas of the state include plain-clothes and uniform men to ensure peaceful Christmas celebration.

    “Even though we are enjoying relative peace in the state, that doesn’t mean we shall sleep with our two eyes closed. We should always be at alert,” he said.

    He added that very soon the command would start a refresher course to enhance its personnel’s skills and capabilities as part of the preparation for the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

    “Other sister security agencies thus, Department of State Security Service (DSS), Police and Nigeria Prison Service will be engaged as resource persons for the refresher course.

    “The DSS will lecture us on intelligence gathering and information management while the police will put us through beat duties and beat management.

    “This is for the sake of optimum synergy between the security agencies,” Mr Olowo said.

    He, therefore, urged people to go about their normal businesses as all the necessary security mechanisms were adequately in place.

    He called on all Christian faithfuls and Nigerians to use the period of Christmas to pray for the growth and development of the nation.

    Olowo also appreciated the support of the state government to the command.

  • Abule-Egba fire: Adeola sympathizes with constituents over incident  

    The Senator representing Lagos west, Solomon Adeola, on Thursday commiserated with his constituents that lost millions of naira in the fire incident that took place around Abule-Egba and Agege area of Lagos State on Wednesday.

    Adeola said that the fire that gutted the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline in Abule-Egba and Agege axis of Lagos State destroyed property including houses, shops and vehicles.

    The senator, who expressed pain at the magnitude of the loss by his constituents preparing for the Yuletide, condemned economic saboteurs that engage in oil bunkering.

    He wondered why some people would choose to engage in vandalization of oil pipelines and steal petroleum products.

    The criminal activities of the vandals, he said, resulted in major losses for fellow citizens living their peaceful lives in legitimate endeavours.

    He said, “I commend the emergency services for their effort in curtailing the magnitude of the destruction that spread to a nearby petroleum filling station. Without their efforts, it is possible that many lives would have been lost in a similar incident in 2016 which resulted into the loss of over a hundred lives.”

    Senator Adeola urged security agencies particularly the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to intensify measures to prevent vandals engaged in the nefarious activities that resulted in the fire incident.

    He also urged the National Emergency Management Agency and its state counterpart to provide palliative measures to those affected to cushion their losses.

  • NSCDC beefs up security in Ondo

    Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has begun an intensive surveillance and patrol across the state to guarantee safety of lives and properties during the forthcoming Yuletide.

    Speaking to reporters in Akure, the state capital, its commandant, Pedro Awili Ideba said his Command was ready to curb cases of kidnapping, terrorism and robbery across the state.

    Pedro, who had served in six states of the federation as Commandant since 2016, promised to introduce “Communication Needs Alert (CNA)” in religious organisations and other major establishments.

    The commandant said the equipment would be used by his men to checkmate criminality in the state, while victims would be able to alert security operatives whenever there is threat to peace in their neighbourhoods.

    He stated that the synergy among security agents, including the Army, police and Department of State Service (DSS) was very cordial, stressing that they hold meetings monthly to strategise.

    Pedro said within the few months of his assumption of office in the state, he had opened a unit Headquarters at Iju, in Akure North Local Government in order to reduce criminal tendencies in the area.

    Besides, he said there was restructuring of both personnel and the entire workforce, upgrading of tractors and establishment of a Commandant’s Lodge for the first time.

    He also recalled his achievements in Akwa Ibom State, where he constructed one of the best Officers’ Mess and overhauling of the state command.

    On training, Pedro said officers were trained in counter terrorism and the use of firearms, like it was done in all states he had served as Commandant, including Imo, Kwara, Abia and Rivers states.

    The commandant said the cases of vandalisation of oil pipelines were curbed through his anti-vandalism efforts in those states he had served as Commandant, while the amount of fund he had saved for the nation could not be quantified.

    He, however, praised state governors who had made it possible for him to make remarkable achievements possible in their respective states with other top security officers.

     

  • 2019:NBC set to strengthen role for peaceful electioneering process – DG

    Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Malam Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, Director General, National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) has reiterated the commission’s commitment to strengthen and consolidate its role to ensuring proper supervision and monitoring of broadcast stations activities on political campaigns.

    Speaking on Monday at the opening of a 2-day workshop on political broadcast in Sokoto, Kawu in a welcome address, noted that political parties and candidates have role to play in shaping the process such that the nation’s democracy could thrive in peace.

    According to Malam Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, ” we need to responsively reflect on the mutual ideals of democracy to sustain an acceptable process.”

    While explaining that the commission was responsible for adequate supervision and sanctioning of erring stations, Kawu noted that stations must measure up with the challenges associated with their responsibilities especially during electioneering campaigns.

    “It is my hope that the workshop would avail us the opportunity of knowing the important task before us and take advantage to learn and do the needful towards ensuring a peaceful electioneering process”, Kawu said.

    In his keynote address, NBC board Chairman, Ikra Iliyasu Bilbis stressed the need for parties and politicians to depart from negative tendencies and activities that serially characterised peaceful elections in the past.

    ” It seems Nigeria has not learnt from past experience.”

    He enumerated rumour, denying opposition access to air their views especially through government owned media, dwelling on non issue based political discuss among others as catalysts.

    Bilbis, however observed that was yet to learn much from the modern democratic process, recalling that ” in the 2015 elections, international observers, though commended Nigeria for a free and fair elections, they however, did not dwell n politically based issues.”

    In their separate messages of goodwill, INEC, NSCDC and other stakeholders who spoke in same direction including the traditional institution, assured of their resolve to support and responsively ensure smooth, peaceful and successful electioneering and elections process.

    According to them, ” parties , politicians and other stakeholders have the duty to make our work easier if we collectively observe the guide lines and requirements.

  • NSCDC bursts ‘illegal’ security network, recover weapons

    Operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) have arrested four members of an alleged illegal security outfit in Lagos.

    The suspects Charles Joenwoke, 27, Nnaike Nwuike, 32, Daniel Vwedesky, 29, and Felix Atang, 30, all members of Citizen for Peace and First Aid Mission of Nigeria (CPFAMN) were arrested on October 19, at Ita-Oluwo in Ikorodu.

    State Commandant NSCDC Tajudeen Balogun said the guards, who were found with a pistol, cutlasses, a battle axe and other weapons were illegally guarding a property.

    Parading the suspect on Monday, Balogun said NSCDC was on the trail of their boss, which they alleged to be a retired general.

    He said: “Their operation is illegal. The name of their claimed company is not registered; that makes them dangerous to the society.

    “At the time of arrest, a Volkswagen Golf car with registration number UXL-158 HP, two motorcycles, four machetes and one locally made pistol was recovered.

    “Other items recovered include 10 mobile phones, four land-line phones, one red candle, one Jack knife, handcuff, one first aid box, four uniforms, 11 different combat boots, nine ID Cards, one generator, among others.

    “No private guard company is allowed to operate with weapons (guns and machetes) and without licence.

    “The Lagos Command of NSCDC is committed to ridding the state of all criminal elements. We appeal to the public to say something when they see something.”

    The suspect however denied owning the pistol, insisting they found it while clearing the bush at the property they were contracted to secure.

    They said they were made to belief the company was registered and a federal government agency, adding that they got their recruitment firms from the internet.

    Asked where their boss was, the suspect said he was in Kaduna and that the agency had offices across the nation.

    Balogun also paraded two men for alleged sale of pre-registered simcards and carrying out registration in unauthorised structures.

    He said the men were arrested in collaboration with officials of one of the telecommunication companies, adding that all the suspects would be charged to court.
