    NSCDC arrests tricycle operator who steals Housewives’ phones

    Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Borno Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says the command has arrested 24-year-old tricycle operator, Isah Ma’azu, alleged to have stolen 15 cell phones from housewives.

    Abdullahi said that Mu’azu, a tricycle operator, was back in custody for the same offence barely two hours after his release on bail.

    Abdullahi who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Maiduguri, said that the suspect was saved from being lynched.

    He alleged that the tricycle operator stole a cell phone from a woman at Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri.

    He said that the suspect who was released on bail, based on health grounds, had stolen 15 cell phones and other valuable items from married women in the metropolis.

    “The habitual culprit usually disguise as an errand boy, go to matrimonial homes under the pretext of delivering shopping or food items from their husbands.

    “After delivering the items, the suspect would ask the women to give him their cell phones so that he would call their husbands. Eventually, the suspect would run away with the cell phones,” he said.

    The commandant explained that luck ran out of the suspect when he applied the same trick on a woman who refused to fall for his antics and shouted for help.

    Abdullahi said that the suspect would be charged to court, and advised residents to be wary of unknown person who may disguise as  errand boys.

  • Police, NSCDC to prosecute violators of female genital law in Ekiti

    THE Police and Nigeria Security an Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti State have signed a pact with two civil society organizations to arrest and prosecute violators of Child Rights Act and Female Genital Mutilation Prohibition Act.

    The Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN) and the New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD), with the signing of the agreement, signed the agreement at the end of a two-day workshop in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    The workshop funded by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), trained security officers drawn from the 16 local government areas of the state on the adverse effects of the practice.

    In her presentation, CEWHIN’s Executive Director, Mrs. Adebanke Akinrinmisi, described security agencies as key in the fight against female genital mutilation.

    She said: “We are imploring them to use different networks they use to gather information in all the council areas to arrest and prosecute the cutters. The practice is high in the rural areas of Ekiti, and that was why we drew the police and NSCDC from the rural areas”, she said.

    NIGAWD’s Chief Executive Director, Miss Abimbola Aladejare lamented the non-implementation of the law saying about 20 million girls are carrying the pains of genital mutilation in Nigeria alone, representing 16 per cent of the population.

    “We are failing in our fight against FGM because we are not involving the security agencies, who have the power to arrest and prosecute offenders, this we are trying to correct,” Aladejare said.

    Four nabbed for allegedly cultivating Indian hemp

    Four persons, including a 57-year-old grandmother, have been arrested for allegedly cultivating Indian hemp at Ogorie village in Uhunmwode Local Government of Edo State.

    They were nabbed after one of the workers, who was recently employed, was arrested by men of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    The suspects are Joy Issele, 57, Amadin Eribo, 22, Lucky Osele, 42 and the village head, Peter Igbinudud.

    Speaking during a parade at the NSCDC headquarters, the suspects said they were just workers, who earned N7,000 monthly.

    Joy said it was her husband, Gowon, who gave them land to cultivate Indian hemp.

    She said her man ran away when security operatives closed in on him, which led to her arrest.

    Joy said her husband does not know what type of crop the farmers plant on the farm.

    She said: “My husband ran away and they arrested me. I don’t sell Indian hemp. My husband does not sell it. He gave them the land for N5,000 per plot.”

    The other suspects opposed her, saying her husband was the farm manager who helped to hire workers.

    Amadin said he worked on the Indian hemp farm to enable him to raise money to settle his debts.

    He said he was promised two bags of Indian hemp after one year of service.

    Lucky claimed he was just a worker under Gowon and was paid N7,000 monthly for feeding.

    He said he does not harvest crops.

    Peter said he was arrested because he was the village head and did not stop Indian hemp farmers from carrying on with the trade.

    NSCDC Commandant Iskil Makinde said his men would carry out more vigilance to keep the state safe.

    He said the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution.

    Lucky claimed he was just a worker under Gowon and was paid N7000 monthly for feeding.

    He said he does not harvest the crops.

    Peter Igbinudu said he was arrested because he is the village head and did not stop the indian hemp farmers from carrying on with the trade.

    “I have been warning them to stop but they didn’t need to my warnings. Police arrested me because I am the village head.”

    Edo State Commandant of NSCDC, Iskil Makinde, said his men would carry out more vigilance in order to keep the state safe.

    He said the suspects would soon be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution.

    The suspects however caused a stir when they prostrated before the Commandant to beg for leniency.

  • NSCDC arrests 12, secures two convictions

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Edo said it arrested 12 suspects between July and September.

    Mr Makinde Ayinla, state commandant, spoke yesterday in Benin, while briefing reporters on achievements of the command.

    Ayinla said they were arrested for offences, such as fraud, illegal oil bunkering, rape, illegal mining and cultivation of cannabis, among others.

    According to him, two suspects were arrested for stealing, two for illegal mining, three for rape, four for suspected cannabis cultivation and one for fraud.

    He added that the rape suspects, allegedly defiled a 14 year-old SSS 1 student.

    Ayinla added that the other suspect allegedly defrauded his victims of N4.5 million.

    The commandant noted that the command prosecuted and secured two convictions within the period.

    He said some suspects would be handed over to security agencies for further investigation, and assured residents of security as Yuletide approaches.

    Some told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that they were guilty, but pleaded for mercy.

    Troops arrest ‘smugglers’, recover arms

    The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army (NA) Wednesday said troops attached to Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II have arrested suspected smugglers, drug peddlers and recovered small arms.

    The army said the suspected smugglers were arrested during a raid in conjuction with the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) on October 18 and 19, adding that over 100 bags of rice, other contraband were seized.

    According to a statement by the division’s spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Olaolu Daudu, troops of Sector 7  with NCS personnel about 5:25pm on October 18, raided smugglers’ hideout at Idiroko- Ipokia and seized 21 bags of rice.

    On October 19, Daudu said a similar operation was carried out around 3am at Gberefu Island by troops of Sector 5, adding that hundreds of bags of rice, cartons of frozen turkey were also seized.

    He said all seized items were handed over to NCS for further action.

    He claimed that the exercise had continued to thwart oil bunkering, armed robbery, kidnapping, smugglers, drug peddlers and other criminal elements within Lagos and Ogun States.

    Continuing, Daudu said an alleged bugler identified as Emmanual was arrested at Ibafo with a suspected stolen mobile phone and handed over to the police division there.

    He said a suspected Marijuana dealer; Adlbdulazeez Akim was arrested at about 12am at Ibafo, while transacting business with some hoodlums, adding that an alleged impostor Paul Ishaya, was arrested at Alaba-Rago by soldiers.

    “On October 19, by 8:25am, troops of Sector 8 while on patrol along Mikky Bus Stop rescued a suspected thief from a mob. The suspect was alleged to have stolen food items and was almost killed. He was rescued and handed over to personnel of SARS Ogijo Division.

    “On the same day, at about 3:35am, following a tip off, troops of Sub Sector 1 at Gbaji in conjunction with men of NDLEA carried out a raid at Sango-Seme and apprehended five drug peddlers with substances suspected to be Cocaine and Marijuana. Arrested suspects and items have been handed over to personnel of NDLEA for further investigation.

    “Also on October 19, between 3pm- 5:20pm, troops of Sector 3 in conjunction with FRSC, DSS and NSCDC conducted a route clearance operation along Benson Bus Stop, Agric Junction and Ikorodu Roundabout. Operation was targeted at clearing criminal hideouts, miscreants, pickpockets and traffic control obstructions.

    “Fourty-two motorcycles and three vehicles were impounded and handed over to FRSC Ikorodu Command. Similarly on October 19, troops of Sector 4 conducted raid and road block operations at Mile 12 and Ojota. Nineteen suspected hoodlums were arrested. Suspects have been handed over to Lagos State Special Task Force, Oshodi…”

    Daudu said 12 suspected drug peddlers were arrested oj October 22, around 7:35pm at Badagry Fiber Market and Marina.

    However, a Lagos resident, Kolawole Olasupo Wednesday accused the operatives of using hoodlums to extort commercial vehicles of N100.

    Olasupo, who took to social media to vent his anger, wrote: “But, this is too bad, nothing but bad. Operation python dance of Lagos is becoming python crying.  At 11:15pm from Lagos Abeokuta Tollgate to Alakuko Bus Stop, Nigerian Army dance whatever (sic) has compounded our suffering, creating serious problem because of N100 from commercial buses.

    “The Army authority should help us out of this mess and its daily occurrence. Army for that matter using an area boy to collect money on their behalf. Na wa ooo!”

    According to a statement released by the Division’s spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Olaolu Daudu, troops of Sector 4 in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), arrested five hoodlums at Oshodi and Isolo on October 17, who were handed over to Lagos State Taskforce.

    He said: “The sustained collaborative patrols, clearance and raids with relevant security and paramilitary agencies especially on identified hotspots and criminal hideouts is effectively denying criminals freedom of action. Several arrests have been made and items including small arm recovered.

    Three boys aged between 19 and 20 have been arrested by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for raping a 14-year old secondary school students simply identified as Precious

    Names of the suspects were given as Osabuohien Aghimien, Osamudiamen Stephen and Victory Osayomwan.

    The suspected who were paraded at the headquarters of NSCDC were said to have had two rounds of sex each with the victim.

    They were arrested by family of the victim the following day.

    Narrating their involvement in the saga, Osabuohien who claimed to be a mechanic apprentice said the victim was his girlfriend and that he took her to the house of his friend to pass the night.

    Osabuohien stated that it was at night that his friends asked to sleep with the victim and she obliged them.

    His words, “I was there when they have sex with her. When my friend said he want to go in again, she agreed. It was the next day I went to their house that I was arrested.

    “My friend wanted to give her money but I refused.”

    On his part, Stephen said the sex session took place in his room.

    Stephen explained that his friend told them that the girl was a prostitute he picked up even when they know that she was just 14.

    He said, “He told us the girl was his loose (ashawo). So we all slept with her. She did not cry at all. He said we should use her for the night. We did not give her any money.”

    Victory stated that he requested to have sex with the teenager and she agreed.

    Commandant of NSCDC, Makinde Iskil said the suspects would soon be handed over to the appropriate authorities.

    The Department of Transport, United Kingdom, has resolved to partner with the Federal Government through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Aviation Security in Nigeria, especially the Lagos and Abuja International Airports.

    Commandant General (CG), NSCDC, Gana Muhammadu disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Department of Transport, United Kingdom.

    A statement issued in Abuja by the NSCDC spokesman, Emmanuel Okeh said: “Andrew Jones the leader of delegation, Department of Transport United Kingdom, highlighted that the essence of their visit is to partner the NSCDC on Aviation Security in Nigeria, especially the Lagos and the Abuja International Airports. He disclosed that they are responsible to counter terrorist attack in the UK, and they work with host governments in the area of Aviation Security.

    “Andrew explained that in carrying out their work, they will do regular department by department thorough security assessment of the Lagos and Abuja Airports.

    “He maintained that in working together with the NSCDC, they will like both them and the NSCDC to learn from each other on how best to make the Airports very safe for travelling Nigerians and foreigners alike.

    “Andrew affirmed that they will prepare a manual on Aviation Security specifically for the NSCDC, that their approach to protecting the Nigerian Aviation Sector will be holistic.

    “The Commandant General thanked the Minister of Interior, Associate Professor Bello Dambazzau and the Team for the visit. The Commandant General also appreciated the Federal Government to have released about 90% of the Civil Defence budget allocation for the first time.

    “Gana noted that the mandate of the NSCDC is to protect Critical Infrastructure and National Assets in Nigeria, the Aviation Sector inclusive. He revealed that as at today, the Corps has successfully Prosecuted 150 vandals and destroyed over 500 illegal refineries nationwide.

    “The Corps helmsman pointed out, that the Agency is very open to work with the UK Transport Department on Aviation Security for the Airports in Nigeria, as the hallmark of the discussion is to provide adequate security for the travelling Nigerians and foreigners on the Nigeria soil.

    “Gana maintained that the visit is timely, and requested that the UK Transport Department should assist in ameliorating the challenges faced by the Corps by providing capacity building for Officers and Men of the Corps, equipment devices to work with by the officers and Men of the Corps at the Airports.

    “The Leader of the Civil Defence postulated that the concerted efforts being made by the present administration of the NSCDC and the insertion of the NSCDC into the Nigerian constitution are all for laying very solid foundational structure for the future of the Corps.

    The CG reiterated that working at the Airports, the NSCDC will work at the outside perimeter of the Airports in order to forestall any eventuality.

    “Director Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Alhaji Bala Salihu, informed that the Minister of Interior directed that he accompany the Team to the NSCDC, in his capacity as the Secretary to the Presidential Committee on Security of the Nigerian Ports.

    “Salihu revealed that the then Acting President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, set up the Presidential Committee on the Improvement of Security at the Ports. The focus is to facilitate the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria by providing adequate security at the Airports, Seaports and at the Strategic Boarders in the Country.

    “He also disclosed that the Committee was split into other 3 Sub-committees, which are Committee for Sensitization of the General Public on security at the Ports. Committee on Streamlining the Presence of the Security Agencies to work at the Ports in Nigeria, and the Committee to Advice the Federal Government on how to fast track the ease of doing business in the areas of security in Nigeria.

    “Speaking also, the Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Interior, Honourable Aliyu Gebi, advised the Corps that in the discharge of their duties at the Airports, they should monitor strictly the fuel dump sites, farm areas and the human habitation around the Airports.”

    Independence: NSCDC deploys 2,500 personnel in Niger

    The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger Command, on Friday said it had deployed 2, 500 security personnel to provide security during the nation’s 57th Independence celebrations in the state.

    The Commandant of the Corps, Mr Philip Ayuba, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.

    Ayuba said that already plain cloth security personnel had been deployed to Minna, Suleja, Kontagora and Bida to beef up security ahead of the celebrations.

    He said that the command was collaborating with sister security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the festivities.

    “We have also deployed security personnel to recreational centres, motor parks and public buildings to deal with any form of security threats,” he said.

    The commandant called on parents to monitor the conduct of their children as anyone found fomenting trouble would be dealt with accordingly.

    He appealed to residents of the state to provide the command with information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of miscreants in their midst.

  • NSCDC chief to staff: I am not a sectional leader

    The Commandant General (CG), of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Muhammadu, has reiterated that his administration is committed to staff welfare as one of his cardinal priority.

    Muhammadu said  he is not a sectional leader as been speculated.

    He spoke at the National Headquarters in Abuja, where he addressed  officers and men at the corps.

    Muhammadu said  his appointment as the second substantive Commandant General of the Corps is an act of God and as such, he has dedicated his service to God and to humanity in ensuring the betterment of the Corps and welfare of the personnel.

    A statement by NSCDC spokesman, Emmanuel Okeh said in pursuant of the staff welfare scheme, the NSCDC boss urged the Commandant in charge of housing and the Cooperative Society’s President to work out modalities by which the Corps can key into the Federal Government Housing policy and also to engage developers that are ready to build houses for Corps personnel at an affordable rate across the commands.

    He reassured the personnel that, under his leadership, whatever is due to any personnel would be given without favoritism and lobbying, as he belongs to everybody in the Corps and not a sectional leader.

    He therefore advised personnel to always channel their grievances through the appropriate quarters and disassociate themselves from speculations and rumour mongering.
