  • NSCDC arrests 78 pipeline vandals in Rivers

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Rivers Command, said on Friday it arrested 78 oil pipeline vandals between January and March.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Lawan Haruna, who disclosed this in Port Harcourt, said 53 of the suspects had been arraigned in court.

He said seven suspects have been released as the products they were arrested for are “genuine” petroleum products.

He noted that pipeline vandalism was on the decrease in the state compared with the figure during the same period in 2016.

Haruna attributed the reduction to the aggressive efforts of the command, the campaign mounted against vandalism and the collaboration with other security agencies.

He advised the youths not to allow themselves to be used for criminal activities.

“We should not allow ourselves to be used by some people to do illegal businesses,’’ the commandant said.

  • Gunmen kill NSCDC officer in Ekiti

An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ekiti State, Sunday Afolabi, was shot dead on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by gunmen.

A source at the command of NSCDC, who spoke in confidence, said Afolabi was killed on Afao Road at 3.30 p.m.

The late officer was killed barely one month after his wife was delivered of their first baby.

But the police said Afolabi was killed by suspected “cult boys”.

His body was recovered from the scene and deposited at a mortuary.

NSCDC spokesman Tolu Afolabi confirmed the killing to reporters yesterday.

He said investigation had begun into the incident to unmask the killers.

The late Afolabi, who served in the Intelligence and Investigation Unit of Ekiti NSCDC, was reportedly shot in the heart.

He is survived by a wife and a one-month-old baby.

The slain officer, who was said to be 35, joined the security agency in 2010.

He hailed from Ayegbaju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area.

Officers at the command headquarters discussed the incident in hushed tones.

NSCDC spokesman said: “Unknown gunmen have killed an officer of NSCDC, Sunday Afolabi, an Assistant Superintendent Corps 1 (ASC1), on Afao Road in Ad-Ekiti at 15.30 hours (3.30 p.m) on Wednesday, April 19.

“The officer was shot in the heart and his body has been deposited at the mortuary while investigation continues.”

Adeyemi said: “I have just spoken with OC-SARS and he said the cult boys killed the person on Afao Road where the NSCDC office is located.

  • Oil theft: Navy releases four boats, 1,555 kegs to NSCDC

The Nigerian Navy (NN) on Thursday handed over four wooden boats containing 972 drums and 594 Jerry cans to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The kegs, which were all empty, were said to have been abandoned by suspected vandals on April 17, along Badagry/Benin Republic waterways.

Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Maurice Eno said the suspects, who were on their way to vandalise pipelines, abandoned the boats and fled upon sighting naval operatives.

He said: “At about 5:00 p.m. on April 17, naval personnel arrested four boats at sea among Badagry/Benin Republic route in a village called jegeme for alleged involvement in pipeline vandalism.

“A team from the Navy Forward Operating Base in Badagry first sighted the boat at anchorage poised for illegal act. Assistance was subsequently sought for from BEEROFT to effect arrest.

“Accordingly, patrol boats were sent from NNS BEECROFT to arrest and tow the boats to the base. However, the owners of the boats escaped on sighting the naval team.

“As at the time of the arrest, the boats were carrying 972 drums and 594 empty Jerry cans. There were also three pumping machines, three coils of rubber hoses as well as 14 outboard engines onboard the boats.

“We have cogent intelligence that there are other collaborators that indulge in pipeline vandalism and oil theft. The navy warns pipeline vandals and other criminal elements particularly in our maritime environment to turn a new leaf and pursue legal means of livelihood, otherwise the law will catch up on them.

“I encourage well- meaning Nigerians to give useful information to the navy on all forms of criminality going on in their area. The navy would continue to hunt economic saboteurs and enemies of the nation.”

Eno reiterated NNS BEECROFT’s drive to safeguard maritime resource, which is part of the navy’s constitutional roles.

NYSC, NSCDC lament drowning of corps members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Bayelsa State have lamented the death of corps members in boat mishaps at the weekend.
The two agencies raised the concern when the new state Commandant, NYSC, Mrs. Loto Bolade, paid a courtesy visit to the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Desmond Agu, in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Corps members serving in some riverine communities in the state have been dying following boat mishaps.
But Agu urged NYSC authorities to impress it upon youths participating in the scheme, especially those posted to the coastal areas to always make use of life jackets when travelling.
He said: “Bayelsa State has a different terrain. It is 70 per cent water.
“So, always tell the corps members to carry their life jackets and wear them whenever they are travelling. Even if they can swim, they should not be over-confident.
“NYSC should also ensure that they are constantly in touch with youths posted to remote areas.
“Always keep in touch with the youths and ensure that their employers are treating them well.”
Agu said his command will always contribute to the success of NYSC programmes in the state by providing the needed security.
He advised all federal agencies should work together in the discharge of their duties.
Bolade said NYSC was working hard to ensure that members of the corps posted to rural areas in the state were given life jackets.
“We will continue to talk to the corps members posted to the riverine areas to always wear their life jackets. We will keep talking to them,” she said.
Bolade, who was redeployed from Niger State, thanked the NSCDC for its cooperation especially in the areas of security.

  • Navy hands over two suspected vandals, to NSCDC

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT yesterday handed over two suspected pipeline vandals and 53 fuel-laden jerry cans to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Suleiman Ismail, 38, and Kingsley Imaeto, 40 were arrested by operatives attached to Operation AWATSE, the anti-vandals/militants taskforce combing Lagos-Ogun creeks.

According to the Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Maurice Eno, the suspects were apprehended at Imagbon in Ogun State.

Handing over the suspects and exhibits to the NSCDC Area Commander, Lagos Central, Assistant Commandant Padonu Augustine, Eno said: “The 76km stretch of pipeline running from Atlas Cove to Mosimi Depot was shut down for 11 months due to severe acts of vandalism on the lines. This was to allow total refurbishment of the lines which cost the Federal Government billions of Naira.

“The maintenance of the lines was completed early this year and pumping of products to Mosimi commenced on March 21.

“However, at about 3am on March 27, a private security outfit, Topline Leighton Limited, engaged for security and maintenance of the pipeline, in conjunction with personnel of Operation AWATSE arrested two suspects in Ogun.

“They were arrested with 53 Jerry cans of 50 litres each of PMS suspected to have been siphoned from the pipelines. The products were being conveyed in four vehicles as at the time of the arrest.

“The vehicles used for the illegal act were Toyota Sienna marked LSR142BH, Volkswagen Bus with registration number KRD151XM, Mazda Bus- XU138EPE and Toyota Camry marked VL03APP.

“Some of the vandals on sighting the security men, fled the scene.”

Eno assured the public that security forces would continue to arrest those involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft, warning the perpetrators to desist from such acts.

“We should note that criminals involved in pipeline vandalism are sometimes involved in kidnappings, bank robberies and other nefarious activities,” said Eno.
