Wike assures investors of security in Rivers

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers said on Sunday that the state was becoming safer for investors on a daily basis due to the state government’s investment on security.

The governor stated this in Port Harcourt at a dinner to mark the 20th Anniversary of Air France’s first flight to Port Harcourt International Airport.

He said that the state government would do all in its power to build on the confidence of investors to conduct business in the State.

Wike said that wooing investors remained critical to the development of the state, because it would generate employment.

“It is a priority for us to attract investors for our people to be employed; that is why we make security a priority,” he added.

The governor claimed that Rivers was safer than Lagos, Kogi, Kaduna, Benue and Kano states “where kidnappers and murderers terrorized residents as reported daily”.

“Investors are coming to Rivers regularly and they are talking about insecurity. Look at what is happening in Lagos, Kogi, Kaduna and Kano and you will realize that this state is the safest,” he said.

In his remarks, French Consul, Mr Laurent Poloceaux, stressed that French investments were doing well in Rivers, with schools, businesses and Air France.

Air France Manager, Mr Jean Tanzin, said that the airline became the first international airline to fly into the Port Harcourt International Airport 20 years ago.

Tarzin stated that Air France had gone through challenges to deliver quality services to Rivers and other Niger Delta states.

22,430 repentant cultists surrender arms in Rivers

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers said on Monday that the State’s amnesty programme witnessed 22, 430 repentant cultists surrendered 911 assorted arms to the amnesty Committee.

Wike dropped the hint at a Town Hall meeting and accountability Forum to mark his administration’s second year anniversary in Port Harcourt.

He stated that the amnesty programme had reduced cult related violence and other criminal activities in the state.

The governor noted that the programme had also resulted in surrendering 7,661 assorted ammunitions and 147 explosives by the repentant cultists.

Wike stressed that his administration had provided over 150 patrol vans to the security agencies to fight crime in the state.

He said that the State Government had also handed over some gun boats to the Nigerian Navy in a bid to patrol and protect the Rivers waterways.

The governor stated that his administration had in the last two years made unprecedented investments in infrastructure, which had led to economic boom in the state.

Wike noted that 13 General Hospitals in 13 local government areas were undergoing reconstruction with the completed ones awaiting furnishing and inauguration.

“We are also completing the regional hospitals started by the immediate past administration, located in Etche and Degema councils to serve as referral centres for secondary and tertiary health care,” he added.

He said that his government had released over four million US dollars to equip and maintain the Braithwait Memorial Hospital to international standard.

Wike stated that the gesture was to enable it serve as the Teaching Hospital for the Rivers State University Medical School, pending the construction of its permanent site.

He noted that moribund businesses were gradually re-opening in the state, while fresh local and foreign businesses were being attracted to the State.

The governor disclosed that his administration had cancelled multiple taxation policy in order to enable business to thrive to the benefit of the people and to attract more investors.

“We are also supporting the growth of indigenous entrepreneurs through contracts as well as encouraging small and micro-enterprises with financial support to revitalize local economies, ‘’ he added.

Wike said that in the last two years his administration had invested over N145 billion on the construction of roads, bridges, pedestrian walkways and underground drainage systems.

“As we speak, several road construction works are either underway or completed in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akuku Toru.

“Also in Degema, Etche, Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Ikwerre, Emohua, Khana, Gokana, Okrika, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Oyigbo, and Tai Local Government Areas of the State, he said.

The governor pointed out that his administration was improving the quality of education by creating enabling environment for the system to produce graduates with skills and knowledge to drive development.

He noted that 300 primary schools were being refurbished and equipped across the state, while infrastructure at the Rivers State University was being upgraded to ensure successful accreditation of courses.

The governor said that the state government had reconstructed major secondary schools in the three senatorial districts to re-introduce boarding  education.

Wike advocated for fiscal federalism in Nigeria where every state could have complete control of its resources and develop at its own pace.

“We must find ways to forgive one another, open avenues of co-operation and join hands together, defeat the smacks of poverty and inequality in our society,” he said.

The Chairman of the occasion and former Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Iche Ndu hailed Gov. Wike for his developmental strides.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Kenneth Kobani said that Wike administration had made giant developmental strides in the last two years.

NAN reports that the highlight of the occasion was passing of vote of confidence on Gov. Wike by people of Rivers.

Rejected award: Amaechi is arrogant – PDP chief

Supporters of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State yesterday disagreed on the decision of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi rejecting the Golden Jubilee award conferred on him by the state government.

Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, in a statement by his media office, described the award and honour given to him by Governor Nyesom Wike as “a poisoned chalice”.

But Wike, through his Commissioner for Information, Austin Tam-George, said: “Giving Amaechi’s sanctimonious statement of rejection, it was important to clarify that the Rivers State government never set out to honour him for any meritorious service to the state during his time as governor.”

In separate reactions yesterday, APC supporters backed Amaechi’s decision to reject the award, while PDP supporters said the former governor did not deserve any award from the state government.

Iheanyichukwu Zubi Dike, a lawyer and Amaechi’s loyalist, said it was unthinkable for anyone to condemn the minister’s rejection of the award when his action fitted the prevailing circumstance.

He said: “Nothing good will come from Governor Wike. The rejection of the award is in order. Do you expect Amaechi to take an award from a man who appears to be the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the state and we have witnessed incessant bloody killings, including innocent citizens of the state?

“To be frank, Amaechi shouldn’t align himself with such a man. I think Amaechi’s action is in the right direction.”

Ezemonye Ezekiel, a former commissioner under Amaechi’s administration, said it was wrong that after Wike had publicly insulted Amaechi and called him names, he (Wike) turned round to include his name for an award.

He said: “I’m in support of my leader, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. Even if he is to accept an award, it should not be from Governor Wike. How can the governor call somebody a thief and all kinds of abusive name and, after some time, the same person turned back to offer the ‘thief’ an award?”

Another APC supporter and lawyer Chizim Enyi said Amaechi deserved an applause for rejecting the “unclean award”.

He said: “I’m strongly in support of Amaechi’s decision to reject the state award. The governor and his supporters have never seen anything good in Amaechi. This is the same Wike who abandoned agricultural policy put in place by Amaechi. Today, he wants to give him an award what for.

A PDP chieftain Frank Owusonye said Amaechi’s rejection of the state award showed “arrogance and unnecessary relevance”.

He said: “Amaechi’s action is totally condemnable. He just showed the people of the state that he doesn’t want a peaceful relationship with the governor and the people of the state. At this moment of state’s Golden Jubilee celebration, Amaechi should have shown a little love.”

“He is not the only past governor recognised through the Jubilee Award but he chose to declaim the offer, even when all of us know that he doesn’t merit the award…”

Another PDP chieftain in Omuma Local Government Area, Chief Harrison Anunam said Rivers State residents condemned Amaechi’s decision to reject the award.

He said: “Amaechi could have shown a sign of humility by letting those he described as his detractors to know that he is a different person…”

Wike: My administration will recover $43m Osborne loot

The $43million loot discovered in one of the luxurious apartments in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi Lagos belongs to Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike has insisted.

He vowed his administration will recover the fund despite the antics of the Federal Government.

Speaking during a special appearance on Channels Television Sunrise Programme yesterday, Wike stated a team of lawyers was already working to ensure Rivers gets back the loot.

He maintained the loot was proceeds from the sale of the assets of the state.

The governor said: “We will follow due process of the law to get back Rivers State money found at the Ikoyi residence.

“This money belongs to the Rivers State people. We have conducted our checks.

“We will stun Nigeria with this matter. We will come out with our evidence at the appropriate time”.

Wike said Rivers will not reveal its strategy to recover the state because of the games being played by the All Progressive Congress-led federal government.

He argued the federal government has something to hide going by how much the discovery was politicised.

On developments in the Niger Delta, the governor stated that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is working at cross purposes with the region.

He accused the agency of politicising execution of projects, which are usually abandoned.

He added that the agency deliberately refuses to liaise with the states before projects are initiated.

On the PDP crisis, Wike expressed support for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s faction, stating he is awaiting the Supreme Court’s position on the issue.

The governor declared he will never work with Ali Modu Sheriff.

He said: “It is very much unlikely that I will work with Ali Modu Sheriff.  It is not possible for me to stay with Sheriff.”

‘Change Begins With Me’, aims at restoring national values – Osinbajo

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday said that the ‘Change Begins With Me’ programme launched by the Federal Government was aimed at restoring national values and upholding every right thing.

Osinbajo, represented by Chief Kenneth Kobani, Secretary to the Rivers Government, made the assertion at the swearing-in ceremony of NYSC Batch ‘A’ Corps members in Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area of the state.

He urged the corps members to imbibe whatever that the campaign entails.

“This campaign is aimed at restoring national values and upholding all that is right, through each and every one of us.

” You must strive to fight the painful erosion of our social values as a result of greed and dishonesty.

“If change begins with each of you, there can be nothing that will impede the progress of this great nation,”he said.

Osinbajo urged the corps members to consider themselves as agents of change and actively live and promote it.

“This nation depends on your labours, in no small way, and it is a great responsibility that you all bear, “he added.

The Acting President said that the federal government was aware of the challenges facing the NYSC scheme and its duty to mitigate the issues, including security, development management and processes.

He stated that the government would continue to encourage continued cooperation between the federal, state and local governments to ensure the smooth and effective execution of the scheme.

Osinbajo reiterated that existing government policy did not allow corps members posted to government ministries and agencies to be rejected.

Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, also represented by the SSG, Kobani, said that the state government had approved all the requests made by NYSC.

Wike urged the newly deployed corps members to be disciplined, loyal, dedicated and committed to the ideals of the scheme.

Earlier, Mr Omotayo Adewoye, NYSC Rivers Coordinator, appealed to the state government to resuscitate payment of state allowance to serving Corps members.

He pleaded with the government for enhanced water supply, befitting state secretariat complex and utility vehicles for proper monitoring and inspection of corps members in their various places of primary assignments.

According to Adewoye, 2439 prospective corps members have been registered for the 2017 Batch ‘A’ service year, of which 1096 and 1343 were males and females respectively.

  • Rivers re-run probe: Judge declines to quash investigation report

Rivers re-run probe: Judge declines to quash investigation report

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court, Abuja Tuesday declined to quash the report of investigation into violent clashes recorded during December 10, 2016 re-run legislative elections in Rivers State.

In a judgment Tuesday, Justice Kolawole declared as illegal a Special Joint Investigative Panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to investigate the incidents.

The judgement was on a suit by Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike in which he challenged the legitimacy of the IGP panel, which comprised members of other independent security agencies like the Department of State Services (DSS).

The judge faulted the validity of the report for use in any judicial proceedings; he ruled that he was unable to quash it because a copy of it was not presented before him.

He said the report was, at best ministerial and could only be useful if it was turned to a law enforcement agency that was duly created and established by law for use as a material proper investigation.

The judge rejected Wike’s prayer to disband the special investigative team and quash its report which he said was prepared and submitted to the IGP during the pendency of the suit.

He (the judge) also refused Wike’s prayer that he declare that the investigative panel’s activities and report was intended to witch-hunt him.

The judge said Wike failed to show how the decision of the defendants (IGP and others to set up the joint investigative team had violated any of their legal and constitutional rights.

He said, as against Wike’s contention, the setting up of the police joint investigative team did not distract from the governor’s powers,  under Section 2(1) of the Judicial Commission Inquiry Commission, Laws of Rivers State 1999, to constitute his own judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the causes of violence during the election.

Justic Kolawole granted only the first prayer relating the legality of the joint investigative team out of the 12 contained in the originating summons filed by Wike.

On the first prayer, the judge described the joint investigative team headed by a police officer, Mr. Damian Okoro, as “a contraption unknown to any law and the Nigerian criminal justice system”.

He said the defendants were unable to cite any law, from the Constitution, the Police Act or the National Security Agencies Act, enabling the Inspector-General of Police to set up such joint investigative panel.

“Plaintiffs’ relief 1, having regard to the analysis that I have made on the legal status of the Special Joint Investigation Panel as an unknown body to the Nigerian criminal justice system ought to succeed and granted as prayed,” the judge ruled.

On prayer relating to alleged witch-hunt, Justice Kolawole ruled, “Relief 4 fails because the exercise of investigative power is neither judicial nor quasi-judicial in nature but purely ministerial and does not carry with it obligation that pertains to one which is required to decide dispute because the primary obligation of an investigation from the prism of investigative and prosecutorial agencies is to establish facts that can be used to indict a suspect rather than to vindicate him except where he is to be used as prosecution witness.”

He also said, “Relief 8 fails as the obligation of the investigative body is ministerial and not judicial or quasi-judicial.

“Relief 9 is ungrantable as it smacks of relief seasoned with political consideration which the court lacks the power or jurisdiction to inquire into and/or to ascertain.

“Relief 10 too is ungrantable as Exhibits AGR2 (letter by the IGP to Wike seeking the governor’s cooperation with the joint investigative team) has already executed its mandate and third defendant’s (Okoro) Special Joint Investigative Panel has, by the defendants’ deposition in their counter-affidavits, already submitted its report to the first defendant and granting relief 10 in the originating summons will be an order made in vain as the event which it seeks to quash has been accomplished.

“Although the court can exercise its disciplinary jurisdiction pursuant to section 6(vi)(a) of the 1999 of the Constitution as amended to quash the report which was not only prepared by a body unknown to the Nigerian criminal justice system but allegedly prepared in the middle of the proceedings in which the investigative report it was going to prepare was in issue being contested by parties and can be seen as an act of defiance by the defendants.

“It is an the elementary proposition of the law that in exercise of its powers pursuant to Order 34(2) of the Federal High Court Rules 2009, on judicial review that the court will not make such order unless the report is produced before it in whatever form the plaintiff can provide it. But no court of law will make an order to quash a report not produced before it.”

The judge warned the Attorney-General of the Federation to be wary of the fact that the validity of the special investigative team was in doubt.

The judge said, “As I earlier relied on the ipse dixit of the deponet to the defendants’ counter-affidavit none of whom -the deponets – was a member of the Special Joint Investigation Panel to make an order to quash a report I have not seen.

“But far from this, I am contended, judicially speaking, (with) the decision I have reached that the said report earlier submitted to the first defendant (the IGP) was a product of a body not known to any law in Nigeria.

“This, in my view, has put its validity for the purpose of any judicial proceedings in great doubt except a law enforcement body duly created by law uses its content as a working document to conduct a proper investigation for the use of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“In conclusion, plaintiffs’ suit only succeeds with respect to relief 1 which granted as prayed. Reliefs 2 to 12 fail and they are dismissed.”

“In any event, it is left to the Attorney-General of the Federation, if he can, in exercise of his powers under section 174 (1)(a) of the Constitution use the said report against these issues which relate to its legality when presented to him initiate in filing criminal charge on the strength of section 174(1)(a) of the Constitution against such a report with its substantive validity may have been indicted.

“Plaintiffs’ counsel has argued that the report which was prepared while the proceedings were pending be quashed.

“I could have done so in exercise of the disciplinary jurisdiction of this court pursuant to section 6(6)(a) of the Constitution but the same report was not produced before this court so that an appropriate judicial disciplinary order could be made to vindicate the precedent authority of the Constitution which this court is bound to uphold by the exercise of its judicial powers,” the judge said.

The Office of the Governor of Rivers State, Wike (in his personal capacity) and the Attorney-General of the state are the first to the third plaintiffs respectively in the suit filed in January this year.

The IGP, the DSS and the head of the police investigative team, Damian Okoro are listed as defendants.

Justice Kolawole’s judgment came about more than two months after the Office of the AGF charged 23 officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the Federal High Court, Abuja for allegedly receiving N360m bribe from Wike in relation to the rerun elections.

  • ‘Cultism in Rivers is getting out of control’

‘Cultism in Rivers is getting out of control’

The Field Representative of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI), Elder Austin Nwako, has stated that cultism in Rivers State is getting out of control.

He expressed displeasure that more persons, especially the youths, were now going into cultism, in spite of the amnesty offer to repentant militants, cultists, kidnappers and other criminals by the Nyesom Wike’s administration.

Nwako stated these in an interactive session with reporters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, after a special programme of FGBMFI.

He said: “We are a religious organisation and on our own side, we will continue to pray for those involved in cultism in the state (Rivers) to repent. We call on the government of Rivers State to take particular step at ensuring that this situation is put under control. It is getting out of control. It is the work of the government to put a stop to all these cultism and cult-related activities in the state.

“Our own as a religious organisation is to pray that God should change the heart of these men (cultists).

“For the people who are involved in cultism, what we are saying is that there is no advantage. There is nothing that cultism gives you. We are calling them to come out of cultism. Let them leave cultism and live a meaningful life. All we want for them is to make heaven on the last day. You cannot be a cultist and make heaven.”

The field representative also stated that the gathering was for the people in attendance to know Christ.

He said: “The programme is for those who have not given their lives to Christ to do so, while those who have already given their lives to renew their relationship with Christ.

“The message I want them to know is that we have started this campaign. This city (Port Harcourt) is going agog by November this year, in what we call the Southsouth Convention (of FGBMFI).”

Nwako also stated that the sensitisation was equally aimed at making people in the Southsouth zone of Nigeria to be prepared for the November convention, stressing that members of the planning committee wanted Port Harcourt and its inhabitants to get ready for Jesus Christ.

  • IGP wants to Plant AK47, incriminating objects – Wike

IGP wants to Plant AK47, incriminating objects – Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike on Sunday levelled another allegation at Police Inspector General Ibrahim Idris.

The governor claimed the IGP plans to raid his Abuja home and use the opportunity to plant incriminating objects there for the purpose of humbling him.

He provided no proof but it came less than a month after the governor alleged that the police wanted to kill him.

Wike told reporters at Government House, Port Harcourt, that he was not afraid of the “evil plan” against him and that he merely wanted to let the public know what is happening.

The Rivers State governor maintained his earlier allegation that the Inspector General was after his life.

He alleged that the IGP got the order on Friday to raid his Abuja house, adding that he was to carry out the order tomorrow but has now shifted it to Tuesday because of the Workers’ Day public holiday.

He claimed that the police expect to find money, expensive wristwatches and millions of naira during the planned raid but vowed that they will end up finding nothing of the sort.

The governor said he will be in Abuja during the week to physically see how the police will break into his house in the name of raid.

Governor Wike alleged that the IGP would get the court order on Tuesday in Abuja.

“First of all, I don’t stay in the lodge; I have never stayed in the lodge since I became governor. I live in my private house in Abuja, in Asokoro. Now, what they have done in that order they want to get from the court is that in the order they wanted to get from the court, they did not indicate who owns the house or who is living in the house.

“Obviously, the court will be wary of searching a governor’s house because of immunity. But to beat that they did not indicate that it is the Governor of Rivers State House. I am not afraid. If you want to search my house, I live in Port Harcourt, I have my house in the village and I have my house in Old GRA. So, you can come and search.

“I don’t live in Abuja and I cannot keep anything in Abuja. They can go and plant either AK-47 or $1 million and say they found it in the governor’s house. They can even put wrist watches that are so expensive that cost up to $10 million and say ‘oh! we discovered it from the governor’s private residence.’

“You cannot gag everybody; people must have their opinions on issues. That I have my opinion on a certain issue does not mean that you have to go after the person’s life.

“They went to Senator Goje’s house the other night when the man was not around. We are aware that they said they got from office or house of Suswam, AK-47 and this and that; the man was not there.

“Now again, all these things are plots to say we got guns. If I have gun, why would I keep it in Abuja? It is here (Rivers State) that I am waiting for them for fight; I don’t need to go and keep gun in Abuja. I will not fight there (Abuja), it is here (Rivers). We are fighting because I have said that they will not rig election. So, if I want to keep gun, I will not keep it in Abuja, I will only keep it in Port Harcourt, assuming…

“So, Nigerians should be aware that if they go to my house and tell you that they found anything, please, it is not correct. But I will be there in Abuja; I will wait for them. I will go to Abuja and wait for them. I will wait for his (IGP) crack team that will come to break the house and enter so that they can bring the Ak-47, the machine guns and $1 million or $2 million as the case may be.

“If the IGP wants to play politics, he should remove his uniform and join us in the political arena and go and see how it is and not wearing a uniform to say you are providing security and then you become a stooge and agent of politicians. Because I said the money they found in Ikoyi belongs to Rivers State, what is wrong in that? I did not say it is my money, I said it is Rivers State Government’s money.”

Ikoyigate: Reps to probe N13b discovered

The House of Representatives on Wednesday mandated its Committee on National Intelligence to investigate the source of the N13 billion discovered in a residential apartment at Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The House also mandated the committee to ascertain the owner of the money discovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Gabriel Kolawole.

Moving the motion, Kolawole said the call to unravel the true identity of the owner of the money was based on claims and counter claims as to the true ownership of the funds.

He said that the development was having negative effects on the anti-corruption drive of the Federal Government.

“There is need for thorough investigation into the matter in order to ascertain the source of the money given the claims on its ownership, purpose and the damaging effects it is having on Federal Government’s anti-corruption drive,’’ Kolawole said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a three man presidential panel headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is currently investigating the matter.

The Director-General of National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Amb. Ayodele Oke had claimed that the money belongs to the agency and was approved by the previous administration for covert operation.

In a new twist, Gov Nyesom Wike declared that the money found in the Ikoyi apartment belonged to the Rivers state government.

Wike told newsmen that investigations by the Rivers State Government revealed that the money was proceeds from the sale of gas turbines by the immediate past governor of the state, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

  • Expectations for the week

    Expectations for the week

The Nigerian polity has continued to get heated up by displays from players in the political “industry”.  Various occurrences across the country have made tongues roll and the controversial large amount found in a private residence in Ikoyi is still making headlines across the country.

Just last week, the presidency announced the immediate suspension of Secretary to the Federal Government, David Babachir Lawal and National Intelligence Agency boss, Amb. Ayo Oke. Their positions are still pending depending on the report of the investigative panel headed by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

Lawal was suspended for his alleged involvement in a contract given to an organization where he was signatory to the account; the bad thing was that the contract was not properly executed. Many Nigerians have expressed happiness in this action from the President especially as it’s believed that Lawal is a top member of the “cabal”.

Earlier, the Senate had fingered him to have been involved in the deal, but a letter from the government and his refusal to appear before the Senate when invited seemed to have ended the case.

Tosin Adeshina, a political analyst said: “The suspension is a good development as the actions of the former SGF has cast a blithe on the Federal Government. Even though it’s coming late, I believe it’s not too late to right the wrongs of the past.

“The former SGF abused his office by awarding contract to his personal company which is against the Code of Conduct for public officers and he had paid a high price for it.

“The lesson for political office holders is that public office must not be used for personal enrichment but a privilege to serve.

“The Government is an authority for the people not an authority over them. As a result, government officials must stay away from acts that will bring disrepute to their integrity.

“I will also like to advise President Buhari to take actions when necessary as foot dragging on important decisions is a sign of weakness on the President in particular and the Presidency in general”.

On the other hand, Oke got his suspension for the controversy that surrounded the organization he headed that involved the found 13 billion naira in a private residence believed to be owned by a member of his family for “covert” operations.

Now, the questions on the lips of many are – can there be any COVERT operation not known to the Commander-in-Chief?  Did Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and Femi Fani Kayode LIE to the general  public by getting the name of Rotimi Ameachi involved in this controversy? Is Amb. Oke standing in to cover up for some powerful politicians as claimed? Well, in some days’ time, the investigative panel should certainly have answers to this question and many others currently popping up in the minds of millions of Nigerians.

One of the worst things to have happened to the Nigerian Professional Football League this season was announced last week, it came like a blast. Our league was no longer going to be shown on television again. Supersport, the station that used to ensure that at least one league match was beamed live to the world every weekend made it public that the League Management Company led by Shehu Dikko had broken some part of the “deal” and so they were going to stop the weekly live broadcast. For about two weeks now, the league had stopped being on television but until the clarification, it was not too clear what the problem was.

Earlier in the season, Sikiru Olatunbosun of Mfm Fc had scored a screamer that made him win the award for CNN goal of the week. Infact, many have started tipping the goal to win the FIFA Puskas award early next year. But with this development, it’s unfortunate that people will no longer have access to seeing games again except they visit stadiums.  Obviously, a whole lot of development still needs to be brought into the Nigerian league to make it profitable and marketable to the world.
