  • RSG warns pastors, business owners against noise pollution

The Rivers State Government has warned pastors and business operators in the state against generating noise in public places in the state.

The Special Adviser to Governor Nyesom Wike on Pollution Control, Mr. Nwuke Anucha gave this warning on Monday in Port Harcourt during a pollution control and religious matters meeting with members of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Port Harcourt branch.

Anucha worried that the noise produced by sound systems used by churches is causing unrest in the state.

He stated that the noise churches produce in Port Harcourt was alarming, stressing that no responsible government would shy away without taking steps to reduce the menace.

He, however, urged churches to cut down the use of loud speakers with a sound level not above the recommended decibel outside and inside, noting that sounds from churches are causing environmental pollution.

Anucha said: “My lords, you will agree with me that the emission of gaseous substance, the sound level of our electric power generation sets and indeed the noise generated by the use of loud speakers in some of our worship centers in no doubt cause serious disorder to human co-existence.

“It is on this premise of good neighborliness that necessitated this meeting. The public outcry about the noise and air pollution generated by some of our churches is so alarming that no responsible and responsive government will shy away from taking necessary actions.”

Meanwhile, the Rivers Commissioner of Environment, Prof. Roseline Konya said that 60 percent of Nigerians are partially deaf due to noise pollution from generator set, vehicles and loud speakers.

Siasia lauds Wike over plan to reopen vocational training centre

Chairman of Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF), Mr. Moses Siloko Siasia, has lauded Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, for ordering the reopening of the Port Harcourt Technical and Vocational Training Centre managed by professionals from Germany.

Recall that the NYPF leader had during a visit to the school few weeks ago, appealed to the governor to reopen the school, which had been under lock and key for the past three years.

Siasia, who spoke to newsmen in his Abuja office, urged other state governors and political leaders in the country to emulate the exemplary leadership qualities of Wike, aimed at opening windows of opportunities where young people are engaged constructively.

“We commend Governor Wike for reopening the technical and vocational training centre in Port Harcourt. Governor Wike has actually directed that the school should be reopened on October 15. I want to commend him for his show of exemplary leadership. We went there without any form of political bias.

“We went there to champion the cause of young people, to appeal to him to reopen the school that had been abandoned for over three years ago. On hearing the true situation of the school, Governor Wike called the parties involved and ensured that at the end of the meeting, ordered that the school should be reopened. It is an uncommon show of leadership.

“I am using this opportunity to call on other leaders, most importantly our state governors to emulate the attitude and character of Governor Wike because it is very difficult for you to see leaders, that welcome constructive criticism and are proactive,”

“This is leadership and this is true leadership. It shows that such a leader sees youth growth as a priority for national development. Other governors and leaders should see youth growth as a priority for sustainable development and peace. We commend him and appeal that he keeps to his word that the government will reopen the school,” he said.

  • Wike, Okowa, Makarfi storm Edo for governorship poll

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, arrived Edo State on Tuesday in readiness for the September 10 governorship election in the state.

Also in the state are Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, his Delta State counterpart, Ifeanyi Okowa; Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin and the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd), amongst others.

Wike, who spoke at a meeting of PDP leaders, said the party’s candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, will win Saturday’s election but cautioned that “the battle will not be an easy one.”

The governor urged PDP members to be united and committed in order to win the election.

He said Saturday’s election is a battle to liberate Edo and urged party supporters to be wise in their relationship with security operatives and endeavor to do the right thing at every polling unit so that the true results will come out.

He said, “PDP is on ground in Edo and therefore we should not be intimidated. We have come to give you the moral support so that you will emerge victorious. But you must be united and work as a team because this is your last opportunity.

“Freedom is not easy to get. When you want to get freedom, you must make sacrifice. The election in Edo requires sacrifice and commitment. You will be intimidated, therefore prepare yourself.”

Wike asked PDP party agents at all polling units to be alert and attentive throughout period of the election.

PDP crisis: Sheriff camp rejects BoT’s recommendations

The Ali Modu Sheriff camp of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the peace recipe offered by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) to stem the festering leader ship crisis in the party.

The BoT had on Monday directed the removal of the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike as chairman of the convention planning committee and the immediate disbandment of the panel.

The trustees had similarly ordered that a repeat convention by held in Abuja, instead of Port Harcourt, favoured by the Wike and the Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee of the PDP.

A statement on Tuesday by Dr. Cairo Ojougbo on behalf of the Sheriff camp, said the resolutions of the BoT fell short of the decisions reached with another reconciliation committee headed by the Bayelsa state Governor, Henry Seriake Dickson.

The camp has insisted on having Sheriff chair the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting “where Makarfi will attend as a member of the BOT”.

“At the meeting, a chairman of the convention committee will be agreed upon, a new convention committee setup, including all other sub-committees like Zoning, Finance, Accreditation etc”, the statement added.

The faction demanded an enlarged meeting of stakeholders and members, where everybody will be given the right to air their views as prelude to genuine reconciliation.

The faction also rejected the vote of confidence passed on the caretaker committee by the BoT, on the ground that the committee had failed to organise a successful convention on two occasions.

The statement continued, “Consequently, we can now confidently inform the general public that well-meaning Nigerians have been urging Senator Makarfi to resign to save democracy.

“We therefore call on his friends and associates and family to advise him to do the needful and resign now to save multiparty democracy in Nigeria and stop impunity that has been the bane of internal democracy.

“That the BOT Chairman, Senator Walid Jubril, has brought crisis to the party. In any case his tenure has expired as he has spent more than 10 years as Secretary and Chairman of BOT which runs contrary to the party constitution.

“A party where we have imminently qualified persons like Senator David Mark, Babangida Aliyu and others cannot be led by unstable individuals controlled by the love for money.

“That the source of irritation in the party is the still-born illegal caretaker committee and the Board of Trustees should have advised that the illegality be addressed”.

The Sheriff camp also demanded the immediate reconstitution of the BoT, stressing that “until we get it right and check impunity, the Nigerian opposition party won’t perform as required”.

“As we move towards reconciliation, PDP should prevent any person or group from hijacking the party. Be rest assured that the PDP will emerge stronger as we note that impunity marred the party’s success in the 2015 general elections,” the statement added.

  • FG is too overbearing – Wike

FG is too overbearing – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday labelled the Federal Government as too overbearing, with too many powers and resources at its disposal.

The governor insisted that the underdeveloped nature of Nigerian states is traceable to an overbearing federal government that had dysfunctional organisations slowing down the pace of development.

Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, said state governors should no longer be addressed as Chief Security Officers (CSOs), but mere Chief Logistic Officers (CLOs), who would only provide logistics for federal security agencies.

The governor stated these while addressing the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 9 at the Institute of Security Service (ISS), Abuja.

He insisted that the overbearing nature of the federal government must be quickly addressed.

He said: “The federal government is simply too overbearing with too much powers and resources at its disposal. We know the recurrent rifts between the   federal government and the states over development issues, including revenue   sharing, resource control, excess crude oil account, appointments into federal agencies and arbitrary location or withdrawal of federally-funded projects.”

In his paper titled: “Institutional Weaknesses and Challenges of Development in Rivers State,” Wike noted that federal government agencies had been turned against state and local governments, claiming that they merely constituted themselves into a stumbling block by deliberately embarking on unconstitutional activities that had been stalling development.

  • 254 workers drag Wike to court over unpaid salaries

254 workers drag Wike to court over unpaid salaries

About 254 aggrieved teachers, whose salaries had not been paid since February 2016, filed a case against the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) sitting in Yenagoa,mBayelsa State.

The angry workers are teachers in primary and demonstration schools of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), and Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic (KSWP), Bori.

The teachers comprising 102 of RSUST, 97 of IAUE and 55 of KSWP are praying the court to compel the government to pay their salaries.

The governor reportedly announced in February 2016 that his administration would no longer pay the salaries of primary and secondary schools’ teachers in the affected institutions where pupils and students pay school fees.

Following Wike’s order in February, the teachers said their relevant institutions had refused to pay their salaries.

It was gathered that while the demonstration schools at KSWP were shut down following Wike’s directive, those of RSUST and IAUE were operating without school fees paid to the teachers.

The claimants (unpaid teachers) sued Wike for ordering the stoppage of their salaries praying the court to declare their appointments valid and subsisting.

Also joined in the suit were the Attorney-General of Rivers State (2nd defendant) and their various institutions – RSUST, IAUE and KSWP (3rd defendant).

In the reliefs sought by the claimants against the defendants, jointly and severally,  they prayed the industrial court to declare that their respective employments were valid and subsisting.

They also appealed to the court to declare that they were entitled to the payments of their respective salaries, allowances and emoluments until they attain their respective ages of retirement in their various institutions.

They further sought a declaration that the 1st defendant’s directive stopping the payment of their salaries with effect from end of February 2016 was unlawful, null and void.

They also sought a declaration that the 1st defendant (Wike) had no right to order the discontinuance of the payment of their salaries with effect from February 2016.

The claimants asked the court to direct the defendants to pay them forthwith the arears of their respective salaries for the months of February, March, April and subsequently to continue to pay them their respective monthly salaries, allowances and other emoluments they were entitled to as and when due until they attain their retirement ages.

They prayed for an order of injunction restraining the defendants, whether by themselves or through their agents, privies and proxies from terminating, sacking, disengaging or in any way interfering with their employments.

When the matter came up for mention at the court, the lawyer for the claimants, Mr. Damian Okoro, said he had served necessary papers on the defendants since February 16, 2016.

He, however, wondered why the defendants had not deemed it fit to file their processes.

While urging the court for short adjournment, Okoro argued that the claimants were faced with severe difficulties following the stoppage of their salaries in February.

But the Principal State lawyer, Okogbule Gbassam, representing the defendants, said he would file the necessary court processes before the next adjourned date.

The court, which ruled that the matter was brought for mention and that the parties had yet to join issues, adjourned the case until July 12 for hearing.

  • Mark lauds Wike’s development strides

A former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has described Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as an agent of genuine development.

Wike also assured that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would continue to solve the developmental challenges of the people by keeping campaign promises made to the people of Rivers state.

Mark, while inaugurating the 8-kilometre Ozuoba-Ogbogoro-Rumuolumeni Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers state yesterday, described the Rivers governor as an agent of “true change,” who had improved the living condition of the people by his delivery of democracy dividends.

The senator stated that Wike had used his mandate to positively change the developmental outlook of Rivers state, keeping his promises, instead of giving excuses for failure.

Speaking on the projects delivery of the Rivers governor, Mark said: “So far, he has governed well. Now, people are beginning to see the results of the promises that he made.

“He is not only keeping his promises, he also has the welfare of the people at heart. That is what governance is all about. Those who voted him are reaping in the benefits of democracy.

“Rivers governor is a man of action, who keeps to his words and promises. I want to thank you for keeping to your promises.”

He said: “I am a great advocate of change because what brought the All Progressives Congress (APC) to power is change. Now, we have seen that change has not taken place. We have to change that change now. Why we must change the change is because those who called for change are not keeping their promises.”

In his address, Wike said that in his projects delivery framework, he was not concerned about who awarded the project, but its impact on the lives of the people.

Rivers governor said: “For us, as PDP, we knew there were problems before we made pledges. That is why we are resolving the problems that we met on the ground. It does not matter the party you belong, we shall continue to deliver democracy dividends to all Rivers people.”

  • Rivers govt warns against militancy, pipeline vandalism

Rivers govt warns against militancy, pipeline vandalism

The Rivers State government has warned militant youths who are vandalising pipelines and other installations of oil companies in the Niger Delta to sheathe their swords and embrace the truce initiated by the Federal Government.

Rivers Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, made the admonition yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

She called on stakeholders to ensure a lasting solution to the endemic poverty and poor infrastructural development in the crude oil and gas-rich region and work towards upgrading the capital base of Port Harcourt like that of Abuja and Lagos, to equate it as truly the Industrial hub of Nigeria.

Harry-Banigo stated that the continuous bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups was inimical to economic, environmental and human survival, stressing that the water, land and the entire ecosystem were being polluted and destroyed.

Rivers deputy governor noted that although the vandalism of oil facilities in the Niger Delta was being perpetuated outside Rivers state, but called on parents and guardians across the region to prevail on their children and wards to shun acts that would impede the actualisation of peace and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.

Harry-Banigo also said there was the need for an aggressive, pragmatic and holistic development master plan that would transform the lives of the people and create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in the Niger Delta, pointing out that militancy and youth restiveness would be greatly reduced, when the people of the region were gainfully engaged.

Meanwhile, the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, also yesterday inaugurated the caretaker committee chairmen of three local government areas of the state, with a charge to them to support the ongoing security drive, to rid the state of cultists.

Those inaugurated included Gbara Erelo (Khana LG council), Monday  Dum-Iye (Gokana) and Adonye Kelly Diri (Opobo/Nkoro).

Wike stated that the caretaker committee chairmen had a responsibility to cooperate with security agencies to build the security architecture of their LGAs.

He noted that any of the caretaker chairmen who failed to cooperate with the security agencies would lose his appointment.

Rivers governor said: “Make sure you cooperate with the security agencies to flush out cultists. We cannot allow the cultists disturb the peace and security of the state. Enough is enough.”

Wike also disclosed that he had received security reports, which he said the security agencies would act upon, as they relate to the sponsors of the cultists.

He noted that any official of the Rivers government found to be connected to the cultists would be arrested and prosecuted.

The governor also directed the caretaker committee chairmen to ensure that they pay their workers’ monthly salaries regularly.

  • Wike boasts: ‘I’ve silenced leaders who play politics with road construction’

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, yesterday in Port Harcourt, stated that he resolved to construct the Eliozu-Rumunduru-Elimgbu (Oro-Igwe) Road in the state capital to put an end to the false political promises being made by unnamed failed politicians to deceive the people.

Wike, in company with his counterpart of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, the self-acclaimed leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also yesterday inaugurated 42 roads in the densely-populated Diobu, Port Harcourt suburb.

Rivers governor stated that he had to silence persons who had been playing politics with the construction of roads in the state, by denying communities political projects, on account of their political persuasion.

The Oro-Igwe road was completely impassable, as at the time Wike awarded its construction to Chinese construction giant, CCECC.

In appreciation, the Oro-Igwe people conferred the chieftaincy title of Omenma Eli 1 of Oro-Igwe on the Rivers governor.

The Oro-Igwe traditional council stated that Wike was the first Rivers governor to remember the town.

Rivers governor said: “We had to construct the Oro-Igwe Road to end the era of lies and deception perpetrated by politicians over the years, using the name of this road. Finally, the people of Oro-Igwe will not have unhindered access to their homes and businesses.”

Inaugurating the Oro-Igwe road, a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, lauded the Rivers governor for implementing the development programmes of the party.

At the Rukpokwu-Eneka Road, Wike said the road had to be reconstructed because of its economic importance.

In his remarks, while inaugurating the Rukpokwu-Eneka road, a former Rivers governor, Sir Celestine Omehia, described the Rivers governor as a child of destiny, who had come to transform the state.

Wike also renamed Nelson Mandela (SARS) Road as Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia Road, while he stated that the Rumuaholu Road, which he inaugurated, would stimulate economic growth in the area.

The Sir Celestine Omehia road was inaugurated by the Rivers Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo.

The Rivers governor was accompanied to the inauguration of the projects by the Governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose; a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara; ex-Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo; members of the National and State Assemblies.

Wike on Saturday also declared the Operation Zero Potholes programme of his administration a huge success, stressing that it had restored 42 roads in the Diobu suburb of the state.

Fayose, also on Saturday, inaugurated the Bishop Okoye Street in Diobu, and lauded the people of Rivers State for retrieving the state’s mandate from “aliens” who stole the resources of the state.

Wike personally inaugurated Azikiwe Street road on the point where he kicked off the Operation Zero Potholes programme on May 29, 2015.

Rivers governor stated that the state government expended N4.3 billion to reconstruct 42 roads, totalling 22.5 kilometres in the densely-populated Diobu axis.

Wike to grant tax holidays to serious investors

The Nyesom Wike’s administration in Rivers State has indicated that it is willing to grant tax holidays to serious investors, in a move to attract international investors to the state.
While speaking on Friday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, when he granted an audience to the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, the Rivers governor stated that international investments would create employment opportunities for Rivers people and generate revenue for the state government.
He noted that the Rivers government was particularly interested in investments in the agricultural sector, to ensure diversification, while calling on South African companies to invest in some moribund companies in the state.
Wike said: “We are ready to give tax holidays to attract international investors. We cannot continue to rely on crude oil. That is why we are exploring the agricultural sector to generate revenue and create employment.”
The South African high commissioner had earlier called for a partnership between South Africa and Rivers state in the areas of agriculture, tourism, health and construction, stressing that South Africa had the technical expertise and finance to develop Rivers state.
While lauding the Rivers governor for his developmental strides, Mnguni assured that many South African companies would invest in the state.
