Residents to FCT Minister: save us from land grabbers

Some residents of Kurudu axis in the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have pleaded with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to intervene in a land grabbing saga by an estate developer.

The residents, under the aegies of Concerned FCT Indigenes Initiative, Kurudu axis chapter, are protesting over  land grab and illegal demolition of their buildings and perimeter fences  by a ‘developer’.

According to the group’s spokesperson, Comrade Matthew Shekwo, the affected plots of lands were allocated to some indigenes by the FCT authority after relocating them from Nyanya.

He also noted that the layout is called “Kurudu Relocation Layout” and was adopted by the FCDA, adding that the layout plots are mostly about 1000sqm. Shekwo, in his appeal to the Minister, mentioned that similar incident has happened in the Jikwoyi axis, Kpeyegi axis, and other parts of Kurudu, noting that the same issue is trying to play out at Kurudu relocation layout.

He added that the harassment and illegal demolitions of residents buildings and shops was carried on January 27, by some people under the guard of armed securities, prompting fears and anxieties among traders at Kurudu Timber Shed Market.

Shekel noted that the group will be leading a protest to the FCT Minister and other relevant offices in the country if no urgent steps are taking to stop the developer from the demolitions and to render them homeless.

  • Over N100bn spent on Bwari road projects, education, security – Wike

Over N100bn spent on Bwari road projects, education, security – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday revealed that the Federal Government has spent over N100 billion on road projects, education and security infrastructure in Bwari Area Council under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Gaba-Tokulo road project in Bwari, Wike emphasised the administration’s commitment to delivering tangible development to every area council.

“This Gaba-Tokulo road project alone cost the government no less than N7 billion. Since we flagged it off in January 2024, we ensured prompt payments, which allowed for timely completion without delays or abandoned contracts,” Wike stated.

The Minister highlighted other completed road projects in Bwari, including the rehabilitation of roads in Ushafa, War College, and other communities, which have collectively cost N28bn.

He said: “In total, the Federal Government has invested N62.2 billion in road infrastructure for Bwari Area Council. This figure underscores our commitment to infrastructure development as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda”.

Beyond road projects, the Minister noted substantial investments in the education sector. New and rehabilitated schools in Bwari, including Government Secondary Schools in Dutse, Ushafa, Kubwa, and others, accounted for N27 billion in spending.

“Combining road infrastructure and education, the Federal Government has spent close to N90 billion in Bwari Area Council alone. This is a testament to our resolve to restore hope and bring development to the people,” Wike added.

Wike also announced the construction of two new police divisions in Igu and Ushafa to enhance security in the area. He assured residents that the projects would be completed and handed over by May 2025.

“Security is paramount, and these police divisions will ensure that residents of Bwari can live and work in peace. This is another way the Renewed Hope Agenda is transforming communities,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Wike confirmed that every area council would have at least one major road project in the 2025 budget. For Bwari, he revealed plans to extend the Gaba-Tokulo road to Kawu, which will be prioritized for inclusion in the upcoming budget.

“We are listening to the people. This government is about fulfilling promises and delivering results. With your continued support, we will achieve even more,” Wike assured.

He commended the contractors for their quality work and directed them to include streetlights along the Gaba-Tokulo road as an added improvement.

The Minister concluded by urging residents to maintain the completed infrastructure, stressing that the Renewed Hope Agenda is a reality aimed at improving the lives of all Nigerians.

Earlier, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its unwavering commitment to rural infrastructure development, which she described as a driving force for connectivity and economic growth.

She also commended the leadership of FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, and members of the National Assembly for their vision and relentless efforts in turning this initiative into reality.

Highlighting the importance of the new road and two-span river bridges, she emphasized the transformative impact it will have on trade, education, healthcare, and mobility within the community.

“This is more than just infrastructure; it is a pathway to progress and prosperity,” she stated, urging the community to support the project’s smooth implementation and maximize its benefits for generations to come.

Responding to a request by the Chairman of Bwari Area Council, Hon. John Gabaya, for the extension of the Gaba-Tokulo road to Kawu near the boundary with Kaduna State and  the provision of an alternative route from Bwari to Kubwa, the Minister  promised that the Tokulo-Kawu road requested by the council Chairman will be prioritized, considering its significance to the people and in fulfillment of the directive of Mr, President for each Area Council to get a minimum of one rural road in 2025.

He also commended Setraco, the construction company, for delivering a high-quality road project, adding that the contractor has been directed to also provide streetlights on the road, beyond the initial scope of the contract.

Earlier, the Bwari Area Council Chairman, Hon. Gabaya, had expressed gratitude to the Minister for providing infrastructure in Bwari and across all six Area Councils within the FCT.

The Chairman acknowledged the historical challenges faced by residents, highlighting the previous dangers associated with the Gaba-Tokulo road, which had sadly resulted in the loss of lives.

Describing the FCT Minister as an embodiment of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chairman presented a gift to the FCT Minister and the Minister of State on behalf of the grateful residents of Tokulo as a token of appreciation for the road project.

In his welcome address, the Coordinator, Satellite Town Development Department, STDD, Hon. Zulkiflu Abdulkadir, expressed gratitude to the FCT Minister for his unwavering commitment to the growth and development of the satellite towns and area councils.

Hon. Zulkiflu said, under the leadership of Barr. Wike, the six Area Councils have witnessed a renewed sense of hope and progress, adding that the Minister’s dedication and passion for improving the lives of citizens have been instrumental in driving forward the goals of the STDD.

He said that the project has already made a remarkable impact on the rural environment, promoting small and medium-scale businesses.

The coordinator expressed confidence that the road will not only improve the economic landscape of the community but also enhance the overall quality of life of the people.

Another highlight of the event was a minute silence held in honour of a former Minister of the FCT, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Rtd) who died late on Thursday.

  • Stop using Wike’s appointment as excuse for your poor leadership, Olayinka tells Bauchi gov

Stop using Wike’s appointment as excuse for your poor leadership, Olayinka tells Bauchi gov

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Muhammed, has been advised to stop using the appointment of Nyesom Wike as a minister by President Bola Tinubu as a justification for his failure to provide leadership as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, made the remark in response to statements by Governor Mohammed, who had cast aspersions on Minister Wike.

Olayinka described it as “funny” that a politician like Bala Mohammed, known for shifting political allegiances, would call someone else a “transactional politician.”

He reminded Mohammed of his history of abandoning political allies, citing his departure from his former godfather and Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda in 2007, as well as his switch from the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) to join the PDP in 2010, securing a ministerial appointment under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Olayinka questioned how Wike’s role as a minister under President Tinubu could be linked to Mohammed’s failure as chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.

Read Also: Unsafe abortions fuel maternal deaths in Nigeria, says LIFE

He also pointed out that Mohammed’s pursuit of the 2027 presidential ticket is misguided, given that the presidency is expected to remain in the South until 2031.

The statement reads in part; “Our attention has been drawn to the ‘say nothing’ press statement that took six days to write, issued by the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, and we can’t but sympathize with a man who, out of political greed, has chosen to plunge himself into the deepest part of the river despite not knowing how to swim.

“First, Governor Bala Mohammed is holding the position of Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum out of political greed, because by convention and practice, the position should be held by one of the PDP Governors in the South. Reason being that the immediate past Chairman of the Forum was from the North, same as the PDP National Chairman.

“Secondly, despite usurping the position of the PDP Governors Forum because of his rapacious nature, Bala Mohammed has demonstrated lack of capacity to lead the PDP, the reason the party is how it is today.

“Sadly, rather than taking responsibilities of leadership and acting the same, Bala Mohammad opted to divide the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), relating with a faction while neglecting the other.

“For his ineptitude and lack of capacity to lead, Bala Mohammed, has been blaming Ezenwo Nyesom Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister.

“Do we still need to feed Bala Mohammed with the fact that Wike, a committed member of the PDP is serving in the APC government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is not new in the history of politics and governance in Nigeria?

“Funny enough, this same Bala Mohammed, became Minister in 2010, while still being a member of the defunct ANPP. His defection to the PDP, months after being appointed as Minister, was to demonstrate his fairweather and anywhere-belle-face politics.

“Even at that, is it because Wike is a Minister that Bala Mohammed has faltered in carrying out the responsibilities of the position of Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum that he usurped? Could Bala Mohammad have displayed the capacity that he obviously lacked if Wike is not serving in Tinubu’s government?

“Bala Mohammed’s lack of capacity was the reason the PDP was not allowed to campaign in Bauchi in 2015, even with him as a serving FCT Minister, a shameless history that no politician worth his salt will want to be associated with.

“For a man like Bala Mohammed to call Wike a ‘transactional politician’, is not only ridiculous, but preposterous.

“Records of his political treachery are open for everyone to see, except perhaps ostrich Bala Mohammed himself. Despite serving as Personal Assistant (PA) to former Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, when he was Minister of Aviation, he fell out with his political godfather, after he (Yuguda) married President Umaru Yar’Adua’s daughter and decamped to the PDP. But when Yar’Adua died, Bala Mohammed quickly took ministerial appointment under the same PDP government”.

    …approves construction of new bridge

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Tuesday commissioned the 11km Yangoni- Sukuku to Ebo road in Kwali Area council.

Wike commended Abuja residents for the support given to President Bola Tinubu, adding that he will continue to develop area councils.

He said Tinubu through him will provide whatever they want in their respective villages.

Speaking during the commissioning, the minister said: “But let me not forget Mr. Chairman, because you have led your people well, because you have supported this administration, because your people are happy with you, let me tell you, that bridge will be constructed.

“Mr. President said anything you want, if you ask me, we will do it for you. Let me tell our people, sometimes last year, the Minister of State and my humble self, we visited Kwali, where we had stakeholders meeting, and in that stakeholders meeting, you told us what your problems were. One of the problems you told us that day was for us to construct this particular road.

“I thank God Almighty that we made that promise, and today is a promise made, and a promise fulfilled. And you can see, you are the first community, where we are doing roads and putting street lights.

“That is to tell you that the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the development of our people. Therefore, all we urge you to do is just to be patient. If you are patient, at the end of the day, we will benefit from this administration.

“Kwali local government, we made a promise of building some police stations, that is ongoing. Let me thank Gilmore Company for what you have done. As far as this school is concerned, I also urge other companies to emulate Gilmore by contributing for the development of the community.

“This is the road that I have awarded to Gilmore, and they have filled the road on time, but they did not end up there. They had to renovate this school. Agreement is agreement. You do for me; I do for you”.

The minister also assured the people of Kwali that he was building another police station in the area council.

The area council chairman, Danladi Chiya told the minister that his people were full of joy and happy with him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for opening up their communities.

He said the road has enhanced the security situation of the area.

Earlier, STDD Coordinator, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu said the road was a significant milestone in the life of Kwali people.

He said Wike has ensured that no community is left behind. He said the road would significantly improve the living standard of the people who are largely agrarian.

The road links other communities near Kwali Area Council.

Speaking on the newly flagged-off projects, the FCT minister’s spokesperson said: “New road projects like the construction of the Kabusa-Takushara Access Road, the construction of the Kabusa-Ketti Access Road, the access road to the new EFCC Academy site in Giri District, and the 15km Road from A2 Junction Abuja-Lokoja Road to Pia in Kwali Area Council are ongoing, with the completion date expected to be met.

  • State courts troubling, undermining democracy

    State courts troubling, undermining democracy

Sooner or later, the Bola Tinubu administration will have to focus on state courts, far beyond the laudable feats of raising the pay of judicial officers and driving the financial autonomy of the judiciary. The reason is simple: at the states level, judges and magistrates are overweeningly beholden to governors and senior state officials. Many of the judges lack any sense of independence and judicial rectitude. Judgements from state courts in Rivers (Governor Siminalayi Fubara V. Nyesom Wike), in Kogi (In the heady days of the pretentious Yahaya Bello), and in Kano (The battle of the emirs) have been troubling and depressing. There are of course many other examples elsewhere in the states, examples designed to stymie justice and fair play, but in recent months and years, the Kano, Kogi and especially Rivers examples of far-fetched legal interpretations or outright perversion of justice take the biscuit.

Reforms are desperately needed to curb the malady. Nigeria’s various judicial regulatory authorities, including the National Judicial Council, Federal Judicial Service Commission, and State Judicial Service Commission, have only made a partial dent on keeping judicial appointees on the straight and narrow path. In addition, neither the Nigerian Bar Association nor the Body of Benchers has been able to aid the effort to make judicial officers models of rectitude. There is plenty of work to be done, not only in sanitising the judiciary and raising its competence level; there is also quite a lot to be done to get state judicial administrators, working by themselves or in league with state executives, to institute fairness in the administration of justice. In fact, and sadly, many state judiciaries have managed disreputably to suffuse their operations with ethnic and religious colourations.

In the months Mr Bello of Kogi State played hide-and-seek with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) when they sought him, one or two state courts startled everyone with their ill-considered judgements. In Kano, the courts are stalling and playing ducks and drakes with its emirs’ stability and composure. And in Rivers, the courts forsook reason, abandoned their independence, and are playing the harlot with the executive branch. They cannot be trusted to self-regulate, regardless of what the law says. They are too far gone in their excesses and harlotry. The Tinubu administration cannot pretend that these dire problems do not exist, and he can also not attempt to dive into the quagmire and directly reform and recalibrate the judiciary. Yet, it has a duty not to leave the judiciary as it met it. Everyone knows that the third arm of government is in trouble, and is also troubling Nigerian democracy. The administration must, therefore, first empanel a group of legal experts to study the problem and get to the root of the crisis before proposing lasting remedies. Yes, Nigerians have a fair idea of what is wrong, but the panel should be able to dig deeper. Secondly, the administration should thereafter sponsor legislation, not too dissimilar to the new tax reform bills, to tackle the rot. Here it will need the help of retired but incorruptible jurists who have tracked the decay and decline in the judiciary for years, if not for decades.

Read Also: $52.88m recovered loot: U.S envoy lauds Nigeria’s doggedness

The Tinubu administration cannot afford to leave the judiciary as it is, abandoning the third arm of government to appointees who lack the intellect and character needed to preserve, promote and strengthen the judicial arm. Nigerians sneer at the tainted process of appointing judicial officers, which are sometimes carried out in flagrant disregard of competence, and sometimes to promote ethnic and religious agenda. Nigerians are exhausted with the operations of their courts, and they need to be succoured, not palliated with cosmetic changes. The National Assembly could attempt a fundamental remake of the judiciary through novel lawmaking, but lawmakers are either too distracted to pay attention to the problem or too tainted themselves to exercise both the gumption and character needed for a comprehensive overhaul. Much more, the legislature does not have the kind of courage President Tinubu summoned to back the tax reform bills to the hilt. The lawmakers seem prone to wilt in the face of the most perfunctory and tepid of challenges. That leaves only the executive branch, assuming President Tinubu can be encouraged to turn his attention to an arm of government certain to doom Nigerian democracy if it is left to its own devices.

It would be a relief if the president can be persuaded to turn his gaze upon the judiciary. Would it be certain that whatever reforms he proposed could do the job of repositioning the third arm of government? No one can tell with certainty. Hopefully, he will get it right, as he has done with the tax bills, and indeed with so many of his other policies, despite initial misgivings and hiccups. The operation of the rule of law upon which investment in any country is hinged depends on the justice system. But Nigeria has only a form of justice system; it is sadly crippled by incompetent and cowardly judicial officers. Their problem is, however, not a lack of brilliance; the problem is that in the Nigerian judiciary, often competent and courageous judges are endangered species weeded out by perverse forms of natural selection. Hopefully, the reforms, if and when they come, will repair the breaches.

  • Wike’s, Fubara’s camps battle for soul of PDP in Rivers

Wike’s, Fubara’s camps battle for soul of PDP in Rivers

The rival camps of a former Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike and his estranged successor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara have engaged each other on a fierce battle over the soul of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

It was gathered that the battle was relaunched following the recent order of the state High Court sitting in Port Harcourt that sacked the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led state executive committee of the party loyal to Wike.

On January 13th the court sitting in Port Harcourt and presided over by Justice Stephen Jumbo restrained the ward, local government and state executive committees of the PDP led by Chukwuemeka, from parading themselves as executive members of the party in the state.

The presiding judge gave the restraining order while  ruling on interlocutory injunction filed by two Port Harcourt-based legal practitioners, Edwin Woko, Love Otuonye and two others.

The order, it was learnt, provided a leeway for Fubara’s men to launch a takeover bid of the state’s PDP, which hitherto was under the control of Wike and his camp.

Fubara’s man and Chairman of the PDP in Rivers West Senatorial District, Robinson Ewor, immediately declared himself the acting state Chairman of the party.

He immediately drew up a list of caretaker committee members from the state to the ward levels and vowed to lead his group to take over the Secretariat of the party.

The action of the Ewor-led group caused panic in the state and rattled the Chukwuemeka-led camp forcing the Wike’s group to immediately occupy the secretariat on Thursday.

The tension created by the development also compelled a detachment of the police to barricade the road leading to the party’s secretariat located on Aba Road.

Party leaders in Wike’s camp were seen trooping into the secretariat to pay solidarity visits to Chukwuemeka.

It was gathered that the first set of leaders to storm the secretariat for a solidarity was the Speaker Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.

Amaewhule led them into the secretariat and declared his support for Chukwuemeka and Wike.

A statement signed by Amaewhule’s Special Assistant on Media Martins Wachukwu confirmed the solidarity visit.

But Amaewhule said it was a new year visit and emphasised the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to the PDP and its leadership.

He said:  “We are here specifically for a new year solidarity visit. We are happy we have seen the year 2025.”

Amaewhule praised Chukwuemeka’s exemplary leadership saying:  “You have piloted the affairs of the party with excellence, and we have no doubt in your ability to lead the PDP to victory in future elections. Do not lose sleep over detractors; whatever we are doing as a party will end in praise”.

He reaffirmed the Assembly’s loyalty to the party and to Wike, describing him as a “square peg in a square hole”, and commended his exceptional performance as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Chukwuemeka on his part expressed his gratitude to the Assembly members for the visit, calling it a significant honor.

He reassured them of the party’s strength and dismissed claims by the Fubara’s ythat they were not PDP loyalists.

“It is laughable when people claim the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are not PDP members. They are bona fide members of our great party,” he said.

Chukwuemeka also held a press briefing to address the emergence of the Ewor-led group insisting that his executive committee remained intact.

He said: “This morning, I deemed it fit that we will address a press conference to the whole so that they will be aware of what we are doing in PDP Rivers State.

“Some people are trying to misinform the public but I want to say that here we are today is the state secretariat of the PDP in Rivers, ably led by myself, Chukwuemeka Aaron as the state chairman of this party.

“I was duly elected, all the excos that were elected with me are here seated. We started as caretaker committee of our party and we were saddled with the responsibility of conducting a fresh election to usher in a duly elected state, local government and ward exercutives.

“And that mandate that was given to me and the caretaker members then we were saddled with the responsibility of selling forms to party members who are interested to run the election and which we did. Those who were interested to run for the election bought forms.”

While denying allegations of defection, Chukwuemeka said:  “I have laboured for this party since 1999, and I have served in various capacities, including LGA party secretary, LGA party chairman, deputy state chairman, and now state chairman. I have never decamped from the PDP, and I remain committed to the party’s ideals and values.”

Chukwuemeka criticized those he referred to as the “APP party” for fomenting trouble and trying to create a parallel PDP in the state.

He accused them of being anti-party and trying to undermine the legitimate leadership of the party.

The chairman also addressed the recent court ruling that purportedly sacked him and other party executives.

He claimed that they were not party to the suit and were not aware of who represented them in court describing the judgment as “not executory” and vowed to appeal it.

Chukwuemeka called on Governor Fubara to allow peace to reign in the state and to stop fomenting trouble for the party.

He said: “This is office, we have taken possession and we can not leave here, whatever court judgement they have gotten we are going to appeal it. We will follow the due processes and ensure that there is peace and order in the state.

“We need peace in Rivers State, and we cannot continue to file one litigation after another,” Chukwuemeka. We are peace-loving and law-abiding citizens, and we will not be intimidated by those who seek to undermine our party.”

But Ewor countered Chukwuemeka saying his committee was no longer in existence in the eyes of the law.

Ewor said following the disposition of the state Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, as a peacemaker, his faction decided to drop its earlier plan to take over the secretariat of the PDP.

The acting chairman vowed to suspend or sack members found guilty of anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections.

He said plans were underway to set up a disciplinary committee to address anti-party activities, particularly during the 2023 general elections.

Ewor emphasised the party’s commitment to upholding its supremacy, implementing its manifesto and constitution, and working with the national leadership.

He said: “We shall also in the next few days set up a disciplinary committee to deal with issues of anti party activities especially during the 2023 general elections and beyond  and every other activities by party members that are capable of bringing the party to disrepute.

“Those that are found wanting shall be disciplined appropriately including but not limited to suspension, sacking and sanctions that are known to the party Constitution.

“The party is supreme, we shall uphold the supremacy of the party. We shall implement the manifesto of the party and Constitution.”

Ewor said security agencies had advised the party to shelve its plans to take over the secretariat, as they were already on ground to prevent any potential violence.

He said his faction heeded the advice in line with the peaceful disposition of Fubara, whom he said had earned accolades for his approach to issues.

Ewor assured that under the new leadership, the party would work towards healing and rebuilding, with a focus on restoring lost hope across the state’s 23 local government areas and 319 electoral wards.

He outlined plans to consult with stakeholders, unite members, and embark on sensitization tours and membership drives.

He called on the national leadership to recognise Fubara as the leader of the party in the state and to work with the new leadership at the state, local government, and ward levels.

Wike’s aide hits back at ex -Minister Dalung over comments on FCT roads

Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Lere Olayinka, has carpeted former Minster of Youths and Sports Solomon Dalung on construction of roads in the nation’s capital.

Olayinka, in a statement on Friday, wondered how the desire of Dalung to advertise his hatred for Wike and the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, could delete reality from his mindset such that he will say on live television that: “road projects in the FCT do not translate to development because such projects do not touch the general wellbeing of the people.”

Olayinka said: “Dalung, whose tenure as Minister of Youth and Sports was monumentally disastrous even went to the ridiculous extent of saying that dualisation or road construction cannot be emphasized as development because many Nigerians do not have vehicles.

“To someone under whom Nigeria failed to successively qualify for the Nations Cup, roads are only useful to Nigerians who have vehicles. What a jaundiced reasoning!”

The  FCT Minister’s spokesperson said: “It is strange that in the mindset of a former minister, when projects like the construction of the Saburi–Dei Dei road, 5km Dutse-Usuma Dam road, War College/Army Checkpoint and other ancillary roads within the Bwari Area Council, 25km Kwaita/Yebu road in Kwali Area Council, 11km Yangoji-Sukuku-Ebo road in the Kwali Area Council and 9km Paikon Kore/Ibwa road are completed, they won’t translate to any development.

“Also, the 11km Kuje road and the 11km Aguma Palace – Radio Nigeria – New Market Road in Gwagwalada Area Council are for Nigerians who have vehicles, those who don’t have vehicles will not use the roads.

“In December 2024, the FCT Minister flagged off the construction of 12 kilometre Kabusa -Ketti road, 7km Kabusa-Takushara road and 15km road from A2 Junction Abuja-Lokoja road to Pia in Kwali Area Council, among others.

“In the estimation of Dalung too, these roads being constructed in satellite towns like Kabusa, Ketti, Takushara and Lokoja road linking Pia will serve no single developmental purpose when completed.

“However, one is not surprised  considering the fact that his main trademark has remained spewing out of wild comments.

“For instance as a Minister, when there was delay in the payment of allowances for the Super Falcons during their participation at the 2016 African Women Championship in Ghana, he told reporters that, ‘Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team (Super Falcons) will emerge victoriously. If we were confident they will emerge victoriously, all the federation would have done is to plan for the process of participation and entitlement.’

“Also, during the Rio 2016 Olympics, when the Sports Ministry under Dalung failed to release funds for the soccer team to prepare for the Games, he told reporters; ‘Who took them there? What are they there for? Because they are under 23 and they went to the US. Now they are having problems, does that become our business?’

“Therefore, one is not bothered that such a character can open his mouth and say anything, no matter how unreasonable.”

  • A cautionary note to Nyesom Wike

A cautionary note to Nyesom Wike

    • By Ike Willie-Nwobu

Sir: Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is a man of many parts. Lawyer, politician and administrator, his many parts are finely rounded and well-tuned, and that is probably why he has survived for this long swimming in the charged waters of Nigerian politics with crocodiles and sharks, without drowning.

In 2023, Wike pulled off a masterstroke of opposition politics when he turned his pain at losing his party’s presidential ticket into a platform for eventual winner, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s sixteenth president. While Wike has been severally and severely chastised for his choice in the election, he has largely shown that his calculation was flawless with the current administration rewarding him with the portfolio of the FCT Minister, a position in which he has continued to pull down houses and pull up trees, upsetting many of Nigeria’s hitherto untouchables.

At heart, the former Rivers State governor serves up a lot of courage and compassion even if his inclination for confrontation submerges most of it. But there is no evidence that he courts controversy just for the sake of it. His means to an end may be sheer ‘madness’, but his glittering political resume shows an unmatched method to his madness. The downside to this madness which has served Wike the lawyer, the person, and politician so well is that it can be all-consuming – a dangerous conflagration if left unchecked. Events in Rivers State where he was an all-action governor between 2015 and 2023 are threatening to make his political foundations painstakingly built over the years  come unhinged.

At a recent Christmas carol in the state, the most audacious attack on Wike yet was launched by former governor, Peter Odili who in a thinly veiled criticism described Wike as trying to turn the state into his personal estate. Wike’s personal and impassioned response to the attack showed how deeply it cut maybe because it came from someone he considered an ally, confidant, and mentor. Wike’s response was somewhat surprising given that he appeared to be surprised by the staggering number of turncoats and the extremely fluid definition of loyalty entrenched in Nigerian politics.

Given that he is a veteran politician, an old political warhorse and workhorse, one who has successfully navigated many political battles, Wike will be better served choosing his battles carefully. The first step to victory in political battles is successfully choosing which battles to fight.

He may be right to nurse a sense of betrayal by those he considered political partners in progress, but he cannot continue to lick his wounds or feel sorry for himself by failing to rise above cheap political stunts and even cheaper blackmail.

In politics, cheap political points may be the saints of the shallow waters. But Wike, a seasoned fisherman in the charged waters of Nigerian politics, must show a surer touch and an even surer foot.

One thing is clear: someone has to sit one of Nigerians most ‘methodical’ players down and talk to him. He needs to change tact and tack. The trajectory of his political future or failure may well depend on that.
