Abuja residents hail Tinubu, Wike over resurgence of infrastructure

Residents of the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the resurgence of Infrastructural development across the city and satellites towns.

The residents with a Slogan, Renewed Hope in Action came out to cheer the Minister while on projects inspection in Gwagwalada Area council Market, Etsu Road and A2 to Pai road in Kwali Area Councils.

The residents told the Minister that indeed Renewed Hope is working and FCT Residents are pleased to have associated with the ongoing transformation in the nation’s capital.

They thanked President Tinubu for trusting and believing in the capacity of Nyesom Wike and giving him such peculiar tasks to oversea the FCT as the Minister.

While responding, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike reaffirmed the reality of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, declaring that the visible impact of development projects across FCT’s satellite towns proves that hope is no longer a slogan but what they are experiencing.

Wike who expressed satisfaction with the ongoing transformation, especially in rural infrastructure said the joy of residents is the most powerful indicator of government success.

According to him; “We’re happy when the people are happy. When people’s happiness is tied to the government’s performance, it energizes us, telling us that we’re doing the right thing. It’s not my statement, but that of a resident who said, ‘Indeed, the Renewed Hope Agenda is at work.’ That tells you something”.

The Minister, while inspecting the A2 to Pai Road, which has now been fitted with streetlights despite being in a rural setting, emphasized the significance of purposeful leadership.

“This is the result of the right leadership. Mr. President has shown leadership, and we’re only following his vision. There’s no magic to it. When the leader is focused and provides support, those working with him have no excuse not to deliver,” he said.

While at Aguma Palace road  construction, the Minister was greeted with cheers and overwhelming enthusiasm from residents, including traders and community leaders, who expressed appreciation for the improved infrastructure.

Wike further explained that, “What we saw in Aguma Palace was incredible,” Wike recalled. “The people were shouting, jubilating. That alone tells you that hope is working.”

Responding to concerns about the quality of projects being executed, especially in rural areas, Wike was emphatic, “How bad would it feel if you weren’t getting quality jobs? You’ve paid money and they’re delivering what you need of course, you’ll be happy,” he said. “The contractors know there is no room for substandard work.”

  • Rivers Emergency: How has Ibas fared?

Rivers Emergency: How has Ibas fared?

May 29, 2023, witnessed the most peaceful transition from one government to another in Rivers State since the current democratic dispensation in the country began in 1999.

The then Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja handed over the reins of power to his then begotten godson and successor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara at the Yakubu Gowon’s Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Fubara, who hails from the Ijaw ethnic stoic, said to be marginalized in the governance of Rivers, was the chosen one and Wike, his benefactor, choreographed the entire process that enthroned the new governor. The state waxing under the mantra of continuity and consolidation was calm and progressive.

The chemistry between the two leaders was so excellent that Fubara used to address Wike as “our father” and “my leader”. He would hardly make any statement without acknowledging Wike’s role in his emergence.

Nobody including the prophets foresaw the doom that lurked around the state and no one foretold that an immediate intractable political crisis hovered around the oil-rich state.

Moreso, there were no signs that the crisis when it started would be so deep that it would force the state out of democratic governance before May 29, 2025, the first of its kind since 1999.

What started as a mere misunderstanding among members of the same political family was mismanaged and allowed to create rancorous division that kept the state on edge for many months. Politically, the crisis shattered the peace of the state.

It snowballed into a dangerous power play between the executive and the legislative arms of government. The legislature was absolutely sidelined in the governance of the state following misinterpretations of actions and events. People watched as the rule of law was trampled upon in Rivers rubbishing the whole essence of democracy.

The judiciary became busy churning out orders, judgements and counter orders on multiple litigations filed by the warring parties. There was political chaos in the state as both the legislature and the executive remained obdurate in their contrived convictions not to work with each other.

But the Supreme Court waded in and resolved the dispute in favour of the Speaker Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. Despite the Supreme Court judgement, both arms of government maintained their obstinacy. They started another cat and mouse game deliberately refusing to implement the judgement of the Supreme Court.

Fresh tension began to rear its ugly head in the state and foreboding of violence became stronger following the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the governor. The act was perfected; Fubara’s removal was imminent and nothing would have saved the situation. Infact, there was confusion and tension in the state.

Militants regrouped in the creeks and threatened fire and brimstone. Different groups issued warnings and vowed to vent their anger on critical national assets especially oil installations and innocent residents should anything happen to Fubara.

In no time, unknown attackers started bombing oil installations. The Trans Niger Delta pipeline was the first target and it went up in flames causing panic among residents. Attacks on other oil facilities were reported in some local government areas in the state.

Acting on security reports and the need to halt the looming dangers and the economic as well as security  consequences of the plot to remove the governor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declared a state of emergency and suspended Fubara and the House of Assembly.

He immediately appointed Vice-Admiral lbok Ibas (retd), a former Naval Chief, as the Sole Administrator of Rivers thereby truncating democratic governance in Rivers.

What has Ibas been up to since his appointment? In his presidential brief, Tinubu directed Ibas to oversee the governance of the state for the first six months pending the resolution of the political crisis. He told the administrator not to make laws but to formulate policies for the effective administration of Rivers.

In fact, Ibas at the resumption of his emergency duties in Rivers was greeted with mixed feelings. Unusual calm enveloped the state few days after his appointment. His maiden state broadcast captured the essence of his mission.

Addressing Rivers for the first time, Ibas said: “My mandate is clear; to restore law and order, stabilise the polity and to create the necessary conditions for the full restoration of democratic institutions and representation.

“My appointment comes at a difficult and consequential moment in history. The political impasse of nearly two years in Rivers State has paralysed governance, desecrated democratic institutions, threatened security and undermined the economic and social fabric of the state.

“It has deepened divisions among the people, and cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future.  These are realities we can not afford to ignore. As a son of the Niger Delta,  I am one of you. And I recognise the weight of this moment. The expectations of the people, and the challenges that lie ahead.

“The uneasy calm that pervades the state is palpable and I feel the weight of families, young and old, businesses, that have made both little and huge investments in Rivers State, uncertain what the immediate future holds.”

Perhaps, realizing the troubles ahead of him, the sole Administrator held some critical stakeholders’ engagements. Beyond meeting with with senior and junior workers in the Government House as well as security officers in charge of the Government House, Ibas  reviewed files, memos, documents and allayed the fears of the civil servants on the payment of their salaries.

Ibas immediately disclosed that he had received the seized state revenue allocations and approved the payment of salaries. Ibas met with traditional rulers and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

Ibas told NULGE: “Let me assure that the withheld allocations have now been released, and I hereby issue a directive that all the necessary steps be taken to ensure that these salaries are paid with no further delay.

“As leaders we must feel the pains of our people and offer them a more positive, inclusive and transformative leadership. This is the mandate I have accepted and it is the standard I expect from all of you.”

To the traditional rulers, he said: “Let us remind our people that the progress of Rivers State is a shared responsibility and that only unity and cooperation can overcome the challenges before us.

“Your Royal Majesties, in my quest for peace and stability, it is imperative that traditional rulers shun all acts of partisanship either through their actions, speeches or body language. The traditional institution must remain a neutral and impartial arbiter, respected by all for fearless and integrity.

“I urge you to distance yourself overtly and covertly from any acts of cultism, violence, vandalism or anything that is illegality. Traditional rulers must not condone any action that does not promote economic good. Therefore, you are expected to report any forms of illegality or abuse to relevant authority.”

Ibas, in his next line of action proceeded to direct the Heads of Local Government Administration (HILGA) in the 23 local government areas to submit reports containing the activities of their respective councils to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government.

He announced the suspension of all the political office holders especially those appointed by Fubara. Those he suspended were the Secretary to State Government (SSG), the Chief of Staff, commissioners, chairmen and members of all boards, councils of agencies, commissions, institutions and parastatals, special advisers, special assistants and senior special assistants.

He insisted that the development said was in line with the powers conferred on him by President Tinubu. He went ahead to appoint and inaugurate a new SSG, Prof Ibibia Lucky Worika.

Undoubtedly, the suspensions of political office holders and MDAs and the appointment of a new SSG caused some hullabaloo in the state. But Ibas deafened his ears and undertook further controversial decisions.

The Sole Administrator cancelled all pending procurements and tender processes carried during the period that Rivers operated without budgets saying the decision was in adherence to the Appeal Court’s ruling in suit number CA/ABJ/CV/133/2024.

He created uproar in some quarters when he hinted that his administration was developing a new budget for the state. He promised that the process would be transparent and all-inclusive.

Ibas said: “We are in the process of putting together a new budget that reflects our commitment to healthcare, education, social services, as well as the continued infrastructural development of our state”.

But since he made the statememt, he had said nothing about the new budget perhaps because of the backlash that trailed the announcement. Ibas further took some bullets when  he appointed  administrators for the 23 local government areas in the state. He further  reconstituted some of the suspended boards of agencies, commission’s, and parastatals.

But he defended his decision to appoint administrators for the 23 local government areas in the state saying it came from his findings when he visited some of the councils.

He said after the visits, he realized that he needed people to help him at the grassroot level to enable him actualise the mandates of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

But Ibas been inspecting some projects, which were being executed by Fubara before his suspension. The first project he inspected was the ongoing reconstruction of the demolished House of Assembly complex, part of the victim of the crisis. The administrator acknowledged that the project was in an advanced stage. He visited other relics of the crisis such as the local government secretariats of Ikwerre and Emohua, which were attacked during the crisis.

The administrator has also been dealing with series of protests against his position in the state. He has been battling with legitimacy crisis. Women from various walks of life especially those in support of Fubara have been on the streets querying Ibas’ mission in the state. They have called him many names such as impostor, stranger among others to emphasize their disapproval of his administration. The protesters continued to call on Tinubu to sack Ibas and reinstate Fubara and the suspended lawmakers.

Others have also been linking their negative actions to the emergency rule forcing reactions from the sole administrator. For instance, the Chief Magistrate of the Judiciary of Rivers State, Ejike King George, recently  embarked on a voluntary retirement citing the ongoing emergency rule in the state.

George in a letter he addressed to the Secretary, Rivers State Judicial Commission, said his decision was informed by the recent appointment of a quasi-military administration to run the affairs of Rivers.

George said: “This difficult and regrettable decision is informed largely by my discomfort with the recent appointment ofa quasi-military administration to run the affairs of a modern State like ours.”

But later, the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission refuted the claims of George in a statement signed by its Acting Secretary, Blessing Vic-Jumbo, clarifying that George was compulsorily retired in February 10, 2025 for truancy. The statement said the decision was necessitated by George’s absence from work without leave from August 25, 2023 to December 2024.

Ibas is, however, not weathering Rivers storm without support. Other women and stakeholders, who are in the same political family with Wike and the suspended lawmakers had also held demonstrations to drum support for him and to ask the president not to reinstate Fubara.

Ibas has been flaying the allegations that he was favouring the camp of Wike in his decisions and appointments. But he vehemently denied the accusations saying he remain impartial in his dealings.

Ibas said: “It is important to restate my impartial stand on the political crisis that has plagued out State. I remain committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their political affiliations, have a voice in the future of Rivers State. My administration will continue to focus on the collective good of our people.”

There is no doubt that lack of democratic governance has had a toll on Rivers especially in the aspects of social and economic interactions. Recently, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) cited the development in Rivers as the reason why it relocated its 2025 National Convention to Enugu despite receiving whooping N300m from Rivers government for the event. While Ibas vowed to recover the money, NBA insisted it would not bulge in its decision and went ahead to list infractions of Ibas.

The NBA in its statement delivered a worrisome verdict against Ibas when it said: “Rather than the peace-building efforts that was promised by the President, tension has steadily escalated in Rivers State, arbitrariness and impunity have been displayed on a daily basis and democratic institutions have been demobilized in a gestapo, military style.

“Political appointments are being made by the Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas with military fiat, without approval being sought from the National Assembly or any known legal institution for that matter.”

But many commentators said until NBA returns the N300m it collected from Rivers, it lacked the moral right to hold such opinion against Ibas administration.

Though Ibas denied all allegations against him by NBA, stakeholders believe that the emergency rule has reversed the development trend of Rivers. It has stagnated most of the ongoing projects especially those ones hitherto funded by the nullified budgets.

But recent grapevine reports that Fubara had taken steps to initiate reconciliation by holding separate meetings with his estranged benefactor, Wike and President Tinubu was described by stakeholders as heartwarming.

Little wonder some stakeholders are demanding reversal of the emergency rule and appealing to Fubara to deepen the reconciliation process and to stop his supporters from engaging in actions including protests capable of truncating the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

A former Bayelsa State Labour Party (LP) Governorship Candidate, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, has told Fubara to shut his doors against crisis merchants and step up the ongoing reconciliation. Eradiri commended Fubara for heeding his earlier advice that he should kneel before his estranged benefactor and predecessor, Nyesom Wike and beg him for forgiveness.

The former President, Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, recalled that when he advised Fubara to beg Wike for forgiveness some Ijaw leaders opposed his position, but said he was glad the suspended governor saw the wisdom in it. Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa, said amid the ongoing reconciliation Fubara must learn to keep enemies of Rivers that once surrounded him in abeyance.

He classified those, who tried to make an ethnic case out of the crisis and others, who choreographed most political mistakes of Fubara and supervised some of his constitutional breaches without guiding him properly as the enemies of Rivers and Fubara. He said most of the people, who claimed to love the governor and offered him pieces of advice, were his real enemies because according to him they were profiting from the crisis and would not want it to end.

He urged the suspended governor to reestablish his relationship with Wike and heed the directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the process of finding lasting political calm in Rivers. He said if Fubara had been allowed by crisis merchants to implement the earlier peace agreement crafted by President Tinubu, whom he described as an old political warhorse, he would have avoided the political turmoil that almost led to his impeachment.

Addressing Fubara, he said: “Thank God that President Tinubu saved you through the declaration of emergency rule. This opportunity has offered you a second chance, please do not bungle it.

“I was happy that you heeded my advice, got up from your comfort zone and initiated the reconciliation by first meeting with Chief Wike and apologizing to him. You have done well. But you need to follow-up this process.

“First, make yourself unreachable to those, who will come and slow this process down and feed you with unsolicited advice to abort this reconciliation”.

Eradiri appealed to the governor to rein in his supporters and stop them from actions capable of derailing the reconciliation process. He particularly condemned the decision of some pro-Fubara women to walk out on an empowerment programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu under the guise that Dr. Theresa Ibas, the wife of the Rivers Sole Administrator represented Mrs. Tinubu.

He said: “Such action is condemnable in the reconciliation process. It can derail and slow down the process of peace in the state as well as casting doubts on the suspended governor’s sincerity to end the political crisis in the state.

“The suspended Governor must rein in his supporters and stop them from all forms of protest capable of deepening the political discord in the state. He must be seen to walk his talk because every action of his supporters will be attributed to him.”

Eradiri appealed to Wike, suspended members of the House of Assembly and other stakeholders in the Minister’s camp to forgive Fubara and help him facilitate the process of reconciliation.

Also, the National President, Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationalities in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), Amb. Kennedy Tonjo-West, urged the suspended governor to demonstrate leadership by guiding his followers to understand the importance of the ongoing reconciliation.

While commending Fubara for meeting with Wike, he said his efforts might be in futility of his supporters continued to exhibit actions inimical to the peace process. West appealed to the governor ensure his supporters were on the same page with him and stop them from undertaking provocative actions.

He said: “I will ask the suspended governor to demonstrate leadership by guiding his followers and ensuring that they understand the importance  of the peaceful reconciliation and that they are on the same page with him.

“He should clearly communicate such actions and intentions to his followers and the public. They should engage in direct dialogue with the minister to resolve their differences.

“The followers of the governor should avoid embarking on actions that could be perceived as provocative or disruptive to the reconciliation process. They should support the peaceful resolution of the crisis.

“Both sides must compromise to resolve all the crisis. The governor should not be frantically trying to reconcile with the minister but behind him his followers are doing another thing. It will only create lack of trust and confidence in the process.”

With the clamour to speed up reconciliation, Ibas will always be on crossroads and will never win the supper of majority of Rivers people no matter what he does to assuage them. Therefore, as the country and different states gear up to mark yet another May 29, Rivers Ibas remains sombre and sober wishing for the reinstatement of the government they voted for.

Wike announces two-week project commissioning for Tinubu’s second anniversary

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will unveil completed infrastructure projects within a two-week period to celebrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year anniversary.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike disclosed this in Abuja on Saturday while briefing reporters shortly after inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects in the Abuja city center.

Wike said the projects to be inaugurated cut across the Abuja city centre, the satellite towns and the rural areas, reflecting the FCTA’s commitment to inclusive development.

Key projects slated for commissioning, according to the Minister, include the Arterial Road N16, connecting Maitama and Katampe districts, the 16-kilometer OSEX II to Wasa service carriageway, linking Apo and Wasa districts, the Arterial Road N5 from Lifecamp Junction to Ring Road III, the renovated International Conference Centre (ICC), the Greater Abuja Water project and various rural roads.

The Minister said the commissioning of the projects will take two weeks, highlighting the magnitude of development achieved so far.

According to the Minister; “By next week, we will be able to provide all the projects that will be inaugurated during Mr. President’s second year in office. The Arterial Road N16 is one of them, OSEX to Wasa junction is also one of them. The International Conference is another one. The N5 from Lifecamp junction to Ring Road III is another one. So, we will have so many roads, both rural, satellite towns and the city. Even the Greater Abuja Water project will also be another one that will be inaugurated. So, we have a lot of projects. It will take us about two weeks to inaugurate most of the projects”.

Wike attributed these achievements to the exemplary leadership of President Tinubu, stressing that he is proud to align with the President’s vision, which, he said, has brought first-class infrastructure to the FCT.

The Minister added that the Renewed Hope Agenda is working in the FCT, stressing that the transformation in the nation’s capital was clear for all to see and thanked the President for the opportunity to deliver the dividends of democracy to FCT residents.

He said; “I’m happy to identify with the leadership of Mr. President and that is what Nigeria needs. Mr. President has given first class infrastructure to Abuja. All of you can attest to the fact that indeed, Abuja has really changed and so we are happy for it and we want to thank God Almighty for providing the right leadership through Mr. President, to provide the dividends of democracy to the residents of Abuja. I don’t see why anybody will say Mr. President has not done well. We are happy that we have fulfilled the promises we have made”.

Speaking on the projects inspected, Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), on the OSEX II to Wasa carriageway and the Arterial Road N16. He also noted the positive reception from residents, especially traders along the OSEX II to Wasa route.

The minister urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure projects and protect them against vandalism.

He said; “These projects are for the benefit of all, and we must work together to safeguard them”.

The Minister also outlined plans for further development, including expanding water provision to satellite towns in Bwari, Karu, and Kubwa, continuing road construction and rehabilitation within the city, renovation of schools and enhancement of security measures.

He reiterated the commitment of the FCT Administration to provide the necessary infrastructure and ensure their sustainability in the FCT.

Wike said; “Our priority is to improve the quality of life for all FCT residents, and we are dedicated to delivering projects that meet their needs and expectations”.

  • Tinubu prioritising water supply to Abuja satellite towns – Wike

Tinubu prioritising water supply to Abuja satellite towns – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says provision of water to Abuja satellite towns is dear to the heart of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike stated this after he inspected some projects in Abuja on Friday, while responding to a question about his recent visit to China.

The minister had on May 1 travelled to China to finalise discussion with officials of the China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group over water project.

He said that the FCTA had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CGCOC for the provision of water in satellite towns, adding that the visit to China was a follow up on the project.

He recalled that the Tinubu-led administration had promised to deliver the Abuja City Water Supply, part of which would be delivered along Airport Road in second year in office.

He added that beyond the city water supply, Tinubu directed that Abuja satellite towns must be provided with clean water.

“This is a critical project for Mr President.

“As I speak to you, Mr President has included part of the funding of the satellite towns in the National Budget, which has been passed.

“We have also included it in our Statutory Budget, which has been laid before the National Assembly.

Wike said that the water project would begin with Bwari, Karu, and part of Kubwa, adding that the procurement process was already at the Bureau of Public Procurement.

He said that CGC, the company executing the Greater Abuja Water Supply would execute the project.

He commended Tinubu for supporting the FCT Administration to deliver impactful projects to FCT residents, cutting across roads, health, education and other sectors.

He explained that 85 per cent of the FCT Statutory Budget, if passed, would be dedicated for completion of ongoing projects while 15 would be spent on new projects.

The minister said that beyond road infrastructure, there were ongoing projects in the health sector.

“So, when we say projects, it doesn’t mean only road infrastructure. Education and healthcare are part of the ongoing projects, particularly in education.

“If you see the number of schools being renovated, you’ll understand that education has a significant allocation in the budget.

He disclosed that about N140 billion was allocated for capital projects in the education sector alone in the statutory budget.

Wike added: “Our intention is not to award new projects but to complete the existing ones so that they will not be abandoned.

“All those abandoned projects will be brought back to life and completed for the use of the people.” (NAN)

Rivers: Wike slams Fubara over walkout at women’s empowerment programme

    • Count him out of women protest, RHI defends suspended governor

Federal Capital Territory Minister  Nyesom Wike yesterday deplored the walkout by some women at Friday’s empowerment programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative held in Port Harcourt by the office of the First Lady of Nigeria.

Wike described the action of the women as disturbing, an embarrassment to the state and a show of shame.

He blamed supporters of suspended Governor Siminilayi Fubara for the incident, and apologised to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for the development.

The Minister, who is currently on an official visit to China, warned the women against ridiculing the state with such behaviour.

He spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

The state chapter of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) however denied the involvement of the suspended governor in the drama.

It said yesterday that Fubara should be counted out of the walkout.

Wike said: “Insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as a leader in Rivers State, I apologise,” he said.

The programme was meant to benefit 500 women in the state with various empowerment items.

Wike also advised Governor Fubara to demonstrate honesty by telling President Bola Tinubu precisely what he wants rather than “saying something today and doing another thing tomorrow”.

“It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace; those who genuinely want peace work and act for it,” he said.

Continuing, he said: “These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for.

“How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone, including the President and his wife?

“All those shenanigans won’t bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace.

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday’s show of shame, and we apologise to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State.”

Count Fubara out of women protest, says RHI

The RNI in Rivers State, in a statement yesterday, said that contrary to Wike’s claim, Fubara is a strong and committed supporter of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The State Coordinator of RNI, Mrs. Tonye Oniyide, said that despite the suspended governor’s absence in town, he gave his full support and ensured the provision of logistics for the success of the event.

She said: “The event was progressing successfully, with the women of Rivers State expressing overwhelming appreciation for the initiative, until a disruption occurred when Mrs Theresa Ibas, wife of the Rivers State Administrator, was making a speech.

“At that point, the women in attendance vocally opposed her participation, stating clearly that they did not recognise her as their First Lady and would prefer not to be addressed by her.”

She said to insinuate that Fubara would sabotage a programme he actively supported and funded was not only illogical but patently false, adding that such claims by Mr Lere Olayinka were misleading and a calculated attempt to politicise a well-meaning, non-partisan event.

“The Rivers State RHI Office finds it unfortunate that certain individuals, rather than appreciating the governor’s consistent support for women-focused initiatives, would instead resort to propaganda for narrow political gain,” Mrs Oniyide said.

“Rivers women are known for their dignity and unity beyond political affiliations, and it is only when external political actors attempt to impose their will that tensions arise.

“The RHI/SDG Empowerment Programme in Rivers State was a resounding success. All stakeholders, including the women beneficiaries, were pleased with the organisation and outcome of the event.

“The only disruption occurred during the speech by the wife of the Rivers State Administrator— an issue which has nothing to do with the governor or the RHI Office.

“We, therefore, urge the public to disregard the unsubstantiated statements made by Mr Olayinka. His comments are not only baseless but betray a lack of understanding of the values and dynamics of Rivers State.

“We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for his unwavering support and commitment to the success of this programme and to the empowerment of the women of Rivers State.”

Wheb President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited China last September, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and CGCOC Group to improve electricity and water supply in the FCT.

Tinubu advocated for the projects as part of his agenda to renew the hope of FCT residents in the government through the execution of people-oriented projects like provision of water.

In line with this, the President approved ₦50 billion for the provision of potable water in FCT satellite towns.

Therefore, in keeping up with the President’s directive that there must be water supply in satellite towns in Gwagwalada, Kwali and Kuje Area Councils, the Minister has embarked on the trip to China for a crucial meeting with the CGCOC Group.

The Minister, according to Olayinka, is expected back next week.

Wike appoints members of IBB Golf Club Interim Management Board

… Reminds pregnant women of free health insurance scheme

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday directed a total clampdown on unregistered hospitals and quack medical personnel operating in the FCT.

Wike said henceforth, anyone found to be operating or working in unregistered health facilities should be arrested and prosecuted.

The FCT gave the directive while reacting to the death of a pregnant woman at Afolmi Hospital, a private health facility located in Durumi, Abuja, following a caesarean section.

Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement that it was unfortunate that despite the free registration of pregnant women into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), most pregnant women were still not taking advantage of the scheme.

He said; “In the FCT, vulnerable persons, including pregnant women enjoy free enrollment into the FHIS, which allows them free access, through the Primary Health Care (PHC) Centres, to all services covered in the Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS).

“Also, in alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and demonstration of the Wike-led FCTA zero tolerance for maternal mortality, several hospitals in the FCT, including Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Abaji, and Kuje General Hospitals; have been designated as Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEONC) centers. These facilities also offer cesarean sections free of charge.

“Our pregnant women are once again urged to take advantage of this free health insurance scheme and stop visiting quack medical personnel and unregistered health facilities”.

It should be recalled that yesterday, Chekwube Chinagorom, a 35-year-old woman, was brought in dead to Asokoro District Hospital.

She was reported to have died, following a Caesarean section, at Afolmi Hospital, Durumi, Abuja, an unregistered private facility operating in a substandard and unsafe medical environment.

She had been delivered of a live baby, who was subsequently referred to Asokoro District Hospital for care.

Investigation conducted by the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) revealed that Afolmi Hospital was not duly registered.

At the time of inspection, only one staff member, Mr. Simon Elisha Godiya, who identified himself as a Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) was present on duty.

Mr. Godiya reported that the surgical operation was performed by one Murtala Jumma in conjunction with another unidentified individual.

All attempts to reach Murtala Jumma via phone were unsuccessful.

Shortly after the PHERMC team arrived at the facility, a detachment of officers from the Nigeria Police, Durumi Divisional Headquarters, also arrived.

The case was immediately handed over to the Police for further investigation.

Wike dismisses rumors of collapse, calls it cheap politics

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday debunked social media reports claiming he collapsed last week.

Describing the allegations as an attempt to score cheap political points, Wike dismissed the reports while inspecting four ongoing projects in the FCT, including the International Conference Centre (ICC).

The rumors circulating suggested that Wike suffered a partial stroke due to excessive alcohol consumption, but the minister firmly denied the claims.

Proposed rally for Tinubu, Wike sparks uproar in Bayelsa

    • Diri vows to stop event

     • Organisers insist programme must hold

    • Stop raising baseless security alarm, Wike’s aide tells gov

Crisis is brewing in Bayelsa State following a move by the state governor, Douye Diri, to stop a mega rally organised by the New Associates formed by lovers of a former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Wike.

The NEW Associates said that the event would also be used as an opportunity to inaugurate the group in Bayelsa and unveil its officials.

The acronym, NEW, represents the first letters of the minister’s name, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and was formed by his supporters across the country in preparation for the 2027 election.

While NEW Associates’ parent body is in Rivers State, the group was making efforts to establish structures in other states of the federation.

The Bayelsa State chapter of the NEW Associates is being coordinated by George Turner, who recently emerged the Southsouth Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but immediately fell out with Diri for associating with Wike.

According to the flier released by the organisers, the mega rally is scheduled to hold on April 12 and would begin from Tombia Roundabout to Oxbow Lake where the structures of the NEW Associates would be inaugurated.

The organisers asked all lovers of truth and good leadership to come out en-masse to celebrate Wike for being a man of truth, honesty, bluntness and good leadership.

There was no part in the flier that suggested that Wike would either attend the event or send a representative.

One of the organisers and former spokesman of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide,  Ebilade Ekerefe, said that the group had been activated in Bayelsa to galvanise support for President Tinubu in the rural communities.

Ekerefe said  Wike had been a good leader who deserved to be celebrated for his honesty, bluntness, and good leadership.

He said as the country moved gradually towards the 2027 election, there was a need to mobilise Southsouth youths to support the President.

He explained that the group was created by Wike to be used as a mobilisation platform for the President’s re-election.

Ekerefe said part of the strategies to be adopted by the group was to showcase projects the President Tinubu’s administration initiated in the Southsouth geo-political zone.

He said the goal was to ensure the people of Southsouth were enlightened on the achievements of the current administration of President Tinubu and support his re-election.

He said: ‘’The New Associates is a grassroots-based political movement set in motion by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to mobilise grassroots support across the states of the South- South geo-political zone for the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office come 2027.”

But the proposed event raised political dust in Bayelsa  as Governor Diri and his arm of the PDP roundly criticised it and embarked on a mission to stop it.

Diri was said to have  immediately convened a security meeting and accused George Turnah of  forming an alliance with Wike to destabilise the PDP and Bayelsa.

Diri also raised the alarm that the event was a security threat designed with the motive to extend the ongoing crisis in Rivers to Bayelsa.

It was also gathered that Governor Diri met with the traditional rulers in Ogbia, the Local Government Area of Turnah and asked them to call their son to order.

Diri insinuated that Wike would attend the event and vowed that he would not release any public facility in the state for the planned mega rally.

The governor described Turner as a suspended member of the PDP alleging that he was recruited to create a faction in the party in the state.

He said: “Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted. I urge security commanders in the state to be on the alert. Parents and traditional rulers should discourage their wards and children from being used by unscrupulous elements to cause trouble in the state.”

Diri insisted that the peaceful disposition of the Ijaws should not be misconstrued for cowardice and said his government would not allow the group to foment trouble in Bayelsa, which is the homeland of all Ijaw people.

He said: “As you are aware, we have threats from our sister state. The political crisis there is threatening us and we will not allow what is happening there to come into Bayelsa State.

“We had in our party a renegade, who has decided to form a parallel PDP in Bayelsa State, working with an ex-governor, Nyesom Wike.

“The party in our state suspended him for gross misconduct and for now he is not a member of our party in Bayelsa State. He was a part of the kangaroo PDP South South zonal congress that was rejected by the National Working Committee of our party and he is threatening the peace of this state.

“This is not Rivers State. Bayelsa is the cradle of every Ijaw man. I have always said that being peaceful is not cowardice. We are very courageous and we can stand up for the truth at all times.

“Every public facility owned by the Bayelsa State government cannot be used except with the express approval of the state government.”

But Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the alarm raised by Diri as shamefully baseless, saying it was a cover-up for his failures.

He counselled Diri to face the serious business of governance and stop raising baseless security alarm on a mega rally in support of the minister.

He said: “It is so unfortunate that a Governor with all the security apparatus available to him could go on national television on mere suspicion of people planning a rally, which is their right  to hold.”

Olayinka insisted that Nigerians were free to express their support for anyone, anywhere and anytime, asking: “Is this how much the governor is afraid of Wike? Can the governor stop people from holding rallies in the state if they want to?”

Olayinka said if the FCT Minister was going to attend any political rally in Bayelsa State or anywhere,  he would inform security agencies by himself and his involvement would be seen because “he is not afraid of anything.”

He said it was ridiculous that a governor had to call Security Council and Bayelsa Elders Council meetings to discuss issue of suspicion of people planning a rally for Wike, asking: “Is this how childish governance in Bayelsa State has become? Must he use Wike as cover up for his failure in governance and politics?”

Olayinka said it was funny that Governor Diri did not remember that Bayelsa was not Rivers State or FCT, when he was running after Wike, seeking support for his reelection.

He said: “When he was seeking reelection, this same Diri was brought to Wike, like a thief in the night. He was brought by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Lokpobiri. David Lyon came with him then.

“As he was kneeling down, begging Wike to support him, he (Wike) was telling him, ‘No, don’t do that, you’re a governor, don’t do that.’

“Shamefully, the same Wike has now become someone he goes about disparaging, just to cover up his inadequacies. So obvious that some people don’t have conscience and it’s unfortunate.”

Also, George Turnah,  told Diri that there was no intention to cause crisis in the state insisting that the rally must go on.

Turnah dismissed the security concerns raised by Diri describing it as baseless and defended his association with Wike, saying “there is a right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly in Nigeria”.

Turnah  in a statement by his Media Assistant, Kelvin Loveday, expressed disappointment over Diri’s outburst, insisting that there was no intention to destabilise Bayelsa.

He assured the Ijaw nation of his respect, loyalty, and commitment as an Ijaw man, stressing that his political group was only interested in mobilising support for President Tinubu’s administration in the Southsouth Zone without ulterior motives.

He explained that  the New Associates would be officially launched in Bayelsa on April 12, 2025, adding that arrangements had been concluded to ensure a hitch-free outing, including formal notifications to relevant security organizations in the state as required by law.

Turnah kicked against the undue politicalisation of the proposed rally, maintaining that ethnicity had no place in politics.

On his election as the PDP Zonal Secretary, he queried why it was problematic if he occupied a position meant for a son of the soil of Bayelsa or Ijaw, wondering if he was not qualified to do so.

Turnah reminded Diri that the Ogbia leaders and elders he asked to call him to order were the same leaders who, in 2019, requested that he should not support the governor’s ambition at the time, a request he respectfully ignored.

“I am not only a member of the PDP but also a serving Zonal Secretary of the Party in the Southsouth. I don’t know another office the governor is accusing me of occupying if I am truly not a member of the PDP”, he said.

He further expressed surprise at Diri’s anger over his association with Wike, adding that he had the constitutional right to freedom of association.

Turnah commended Diri on his many achievements and pledged his continued support for the prosperity administration led by the governor.

He called on the teeming youths, women, political class across party lines and all lovers of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come out  en-masse, and show their appreciation to the President and FCT Minister for their special love for the Bayelsa State and Ijaw nation.

He said the love was clearly demonstrated through the facilitation and appointment of notable Bayelsans into positions of trust in the renewed hope administration.
