  • Imo NYSC decries vandalism of its transformer

    The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Imo has decried the vandalism of its transformer and other equipment at its permanent orientation camp and appealed to government to come to its aid.

    Mr Sunday Aroni, the NYSC State Coordinator, made the appeal on Monday at the official closing ceremony of orientation course for the Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members deployed to the state at the orientation camp in Eziama Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government area.

    He said that the vandalism, which happened early in the year, had cut the camp off from the national grid, making the camp to depend constantly on power generator for light which is cost ineffective.

    Aroni, therefore, appealed to the state government to come to its aid by repairing the transformer or providing a new one so that the NYSC could save some money being used constantly on diesel.

    He expressed appreciation to Gov. Rochas Okorocha for the “fatherly support and assistance we have enjoyed and for all he has done for us in the scheme.”

    Aroni commended the camp officials for carrying out their duties creditably and the corps members for keenly and diligently participating in all the activities during the course.

    The state coordinator urged the corps members to put into practice all they learnt during the orientation course, especially on security, communication, Igbo culture and drug abuse and control.

    Gov. Rochas Okorocha, represented by the state Commissioner for Talent and Youth Development and Chairman, NYSC Governing Board, Mr Ifeanyichukwu Onwueyiagba, urged corps members to shun truancy, get rich quick syndrome and take their primary assignment seriously.

    He enjoined them to show love to fellow Nigerian citizens in the course of the assignment and avoid divisive tendencies.

    Okorocha advised them to make positive use of the social media to enhance themselves.

    He enjoined employers of labour not to reject corps members posted to their establishments and assured of his commitment and continuous provision of amenities to the camp.

  • NYSC in Ogun trains 2,464 in entrepreneurship development

    The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun on Friday graduated 2,464 corps members from its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

    The graduation was for the 2018 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members currently undergoing orientation.

    It held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu, Ogun.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the SAED programme, inaugurated by the NYSC Board in 2012, has graduated more than 20,000 trainees in Ogun.

    The Ogun Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Josephine Bakare, tasked the graduates to distinguish themselves through optimal application of their skills for self-development.

    “These ones have been exposed to several sub-skills under the 12 skill sectors of the SAED approved by the NYSC Directorate,’’ the coordinator said.

    She said that the skills included fashion designing, landscaping, make-up artistry, bead/jewelry embroidery, cosmetology, catering, craftsmanship, food processing and information and communication technology.

    “It is believed that within the next few months, some of those trained will begin to create wealth for themselves and become employers of labour.

    “To achieve this, you must continuously develop yourselves with your trainers stationed across all local government areas within the state to master your skills.

    “I also urge you to leverage the collaboration between the NYSC and partner financial institutions to access soft loans to grow your businesses,” she said.

    Ogun Deputy Gov. Yetunde Onanuga urged the graduates to be disciplined and dedicated to enable them to achieve business excellence.

    “You must take your own destiny in your own hands and look for how to make an impact by being a solution provider.

    “Billionaires are solution providers and ones who have learnt to perfect their skills and trades overtime to the benefit of others.

    “If you must excel in craftsmanship and enterprise, you must pay attention to quality,” Onanuga said.

    She reiterated the commitment of the state government to supporting enterprise and innovation by engendering strategic investment in technical education.

    NAN reports that NYSC SAED facilitates training and mentoring of young graduates in various endeavours to make them self-reliant.

  • NYSC: DG cautions corps members’ against bribery

    The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, has cautioned corps members’ against bribery ahead of the 2019 general elections.

    Kazaure gave the warning on Wednesday while visiting corps members at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Suru Local Government Area, Darkingari, Kebbi State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the DG was represented by Mrs Victoria Ango, a Deputy Director in the Evaluation Department, NYSC headquarters, Abuja.

    “I urge you to please avoid bribing and fraud during the 2019 general elections. You are not covered by any immunity; anybody caught violating electoral acts is going to face the full wrath of the law.

    “Your life is very important to us; you are the future leaders, so do not lose your life for politicians,” he said.

    The DG lauded the improved collaboration between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and NYSC since 2008.

    The collaboration, he said, had assisted in the successful execution of elections across the country, just as the Election Security Committee had ensured the safety of corps members.

    The DG explained that corps members would be sensitised on the right morals while discharging their duties.

    He added that the scheme had set up a security committee in charge of the mechanisms to monitor the corps members.

    “INEC will also train corps members on how to discharge their electoral duties during the polls,” he said.

    Kazaure also urged corps members to respect the social and cultural beliefs of the community they would be discharging their primary assignments.

    He reiterated the importance of the skill acquisition training in becoming self-reliant citizens of the country.

    NAN reports that the State Coordinator, Mr Usman Bards, commended corps members for complying with camp rules and regulations.

  • INEC to begin display of voters’ register Nov 6 in Edo

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will begin display of voters’ register at various polling units across the state from Nov. 6 to 12.

    Mr Emmanuel Alex-Hart, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo made this known during a meeting with representatives of various political parties in Benin on Thursday.

    He said the display would afford the general public the opportunity to make claims for inclusion of names and objection to lists of deceased, underage, multiple and those of foreign nationals.

    He said the exercise would also give credibility to the voters’ register and guarantee the credibility of electoral outcomes.

    He added that the exercise would be carried out by the staff of the commission and members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

    “I urge you to partner with the commission and cooperate with our field officers for the success of the exercise.

    “I also want you to help create the needed awareness to all and sundry on the need for all to validate the register ahead of the 2019 general elections,’’ he said

    Alex-Hart revealed that about 473,476 unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) currently with the commission would be taken to the various polling units for collection.

    “The commission has made the collection process much easier. So mobilise your people to go and validate the register and also use the opportunity to collect their PVCs,’’ he said.

    Mrs Grace Eseka, the State Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA) in her remarks said the agency had concluded plans to embark on a door-to -door campaign on the importance of collecting the PVCs.

  • NYSC to partner Cross River

    THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Cross River State says it will partner with the state government in any capacity to support job creation in the state through entrepreneurship development programmes.

    The State Coordinator, Mr. Adegoke Ayodele Adewale, who said this during the 2018 Batch ‘C’ swearing in/oath taking ceremony at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Obubra, said they have adopted a more proactive role towards complementing government’s drive to create self – reliant, self -employed entrepreneurs instead of job seekers.

  • Unilorin: NYSC extends deadline for registration till tomorrow

    THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the deadline for registration of corps members at the various camps to tomorrow, especially for newly mobilised University of Ilorin (Unilorin) graduates.

    According to Mr. Kunle Akogun, Director of Corporate Affairs of University of Ilorin, the circular dated October 24, was sent to all state coordinators of NYSC.

    He said the memo was signed on behalf of the NYSC Director-General, Brig-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, by Mrs. R. B. Ohakwu.

    The memo stated that the extension was as a result of a passionate request from the University of Ilorin, to allow prospective corps members from the institution attend their convocation ceremonies.

    “So, Unilorin graduates, who have been mobilised for the NYSC, still have up to Saturday, October 27,  to report at their various NYSC camps all over the federation,” it said.

    The 34th Convocation Ceremony of University of Ilorin took place on October 23.

  • NYSC: Only two corps members involved in accident

    – 2,573 swear oath

    The Lagos State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Prince Mohammed Momoh, has said only two corps members were involved in the ghastly motor accident that happened on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in which nine people were killed.

    In an interview at the Swearing In of 2,573 2018 Batch C Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC Camp in Iyana Ipaja, Momoh said the two corps members arrived camp safely but with injuries and had been sent to the Orile-Agege General Hospital for comprehensive check up.

    He described as fake the news that 13 corps members had died in the accident on their way to camp.

    “We had only two prospective corps members coming to Lagos that were involved and we thank God they didn’t die; they were injured.

    Initially when we called the Road Safety both Lagos and Ogun State, we were told no prospective corps members were involved. We were particularly more concerned with the deceased at first but we were told none.

    “Later in the day two corps members came to camp – one with an injured hand. We gave him speedy registration. Immediately I took him to the clinic for first assessment because we have a consultant from LUTH with us. We redressed his wound and we immediately evacuated him to Orile-Agege General Hospital for a very comprehensive health check. And he was cleared.

    “The second one had a head injury. Except for some throbbing headache, nothing was wrong with him. But we didn’t want to take chances. He presented himself on Wednesday. We sent him to Orile-Agege for CT-SCAN this morning.

    ” The health and safety of corps members is on top of my Director-General’s priority. Because we know what it is to train a child to a graduate and that is why we will continue to do our best during the cause of the national service,” he said.

    Addressing the corps members, Momoh urged them to settle down to the regimented camp life and be willing to learn.

    “Discipline and good time management should be your watchword throughout the period of the orientation course. The three-week orientation programme is characterised by para-military drills, leadership training, etc. These training have been designed to impact on you virtues of leadership, social skills, and emotional intelligence needed for a successful service year,” he said.

    In his speech, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-house mental Relations, Oluseyi Oladejo, counseled the corps members to pay attention to the skills acquisition programme of the scheme as well as work had to make impact as many before them had done.

    The chief Judge of Lagos, represented by Justice B.A. Oke Lawal led the corps members to take the NYSC oath.

  • Bagudu assures corps members of adequate security, welfare

    Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi has assured corps members deployed to the state for the one year mandatory national service of adequate security and welfare during their stay.

    Bagudu gave the assurance at the swearing in ceremony of the NYSC Batch C Stream 1 corps members at the Orientation Camp in Dakingari, Suru Local Government Area on Thursday.

    Bagudu who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Samaila Yombe said: “Kebbi State has been known for Peace, your safety here is well assured, already, various security agencies in the state have been directed to double their efforts towards giving maximum security to corps members.

    ” The state government on its part will continue to do every thing possible to see to your general welfare and wellbeing.”

    Bagudu said the NYSC had contribute immensely to the development of the state in the areas of education, health, environmental sanitation and other key sectors of the economy.

    He advised the corps members to distance themselves from unhealthy practices such as bigotry, cultism, corruption, violence and other social vices.

    ”The orientation programme is specially designed to instill in you the right attitude and arm you with the leadership qualities required in our future leaders.

    “ With this in mind, you should distance yourself from unhealthy practices such as bigotry, cultism, corruption, violence and other social vices,” Bagudu said.

    The governor also urged them to respect the social and cultural beliefs of the community they are posted to serve.

    Earlier, the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Barde Usman , said that 2,350 corps members had registered for the three weeks orientation.

    Usman said that the corps members would undergo orientation on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship during the programme.

    He added that the aim was to make the corps members self reliant and employers of labour rather than job seekers at the end of the service year, as the county is facing daunting challenges especially in the areas of unemployment and security.

  • NYSC: Educationist seeks end to age barrier

    Mr Ike Onyechere, Chairman, Exam Ethics Marshal International (EEMI) has called on the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to allow Nigerians serve their fatherland irrespective of age.

    Onyechere made the call in an interview with our reporter on Wednesday in Abuja.

    He said that age should not be a barrier for citizens who were willing to serve their fatherland through the NYSC.

    “The law that says over age people should not serve is to give those who went to school at and advanced age succor.

    “But if someone wants to render that service on his own volition, even if he is 40 years old and can still serve he should be allowed to do it.

    “I don’t think it is fraudulent for someone above 30 years to serve, I rather see it as patriotic. If they refuse to exempt themselves they should be allowed to serve,’’ he said.

    Onyechere also blamed the issue on unemployment in the country and graduates wanted to do the one year service in order to earn the N19,000 and not be idle.

    He said that the law was only broken when a citizen out rightly refused to do his or her youth service after graduation, advising that issues should be looked at from different perspective and policies should be objective.

    Our reporter recalls that the NYSC banned prospective corps members from the Benue State University, Makurdi due to age falsification by some of the students to make them eligible for the one year service.
