  • ITF partners NYSC on skill acquisition

    The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has partnered the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to train youth corps members on skills to prepare them for economic realities.

    Youth corps members at the Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State NYSC camp were trained in bead making, make –up, desktop publishing, among others.

    The Director-General/ CEO of ITF, Mr. Joseph Ari, who was represented by the Deputy Director Mr. Bamidele Sunday, said the labour market has gone beyond certificate or degree.

    He said: “These days, interviews are done online, jobs are gotten online and having the understanding that most graduates are not really ready, we are doing this to ensure that the lucky ones get the job while the unsuccessful use the skill acquired here to create jobs for themselves.”

    The NYSC State Coordinator, Muhammed Momoh, welcomed the idea, saying it is in line with the objectives of  NYSC.

    “The partnership with ITF is a welcome development because what it isdoing is in line with the objective of our skill acquisition programme.”

    The training which held recently at Iyana Ipaja NYSC camp had all corp members in attendance where they were trained on several skills like bead making, make –up, desktop publishing, among others.

    Speakingn on the initiative, the DG/ CEO Industrial Trust Fund, Mr Joseph N Ari who was represented by Deputy Director ITF Mr Oluwasemire James Bamidele Sunday said the labour market has gone beyond certificate or degree,

    “These days interviews are done online, jobs are gotten online and having the understanding that most of our graduate are not really ready, that is what we are trying to fill, so those that are lucky will get job and those who didn’t get job will use the skill and create jobs for themselves”, he said.

    Also, the Deputy Director, ITF Area Manager for the Badagry office, Mrs Funmi Coker said “due to the frightening unemployment situation in the country, the ITF came up with this initiative as part of their quick links in the ITF reviewed vision called the Industrial Training Fund Vulnerable and Indigent Youth empowerment programme. This initiative is to address the unemployment situation in the economy and the programme is to give Nigerian youths the opportunity to acquire relevant skills that will help them to be relevant to the economy.”

    The Nysc State Coordinator, Lagos state, Muhammed Momoh welcomed the idea, stating that it is in line with the objectives of NYSC.
    “The partnership with ITF is a welcome development because what they are doing is in line with the objective of our skill acquisition programme. NYSC is not doing it alone, we work with partners, so we leverage on the strength of our partners to ensure the corps members are well trained to establish their businesses. We are working with ILO, the Lagos business school and the ITF to assist in training our corp members, empower them with the requisite skills under their different initiative and we now take it from there to ensure they are now empowered to set up these businesses.”

  • Bagudu assures corps members of maximum security in Kebbi

    Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi has assured corps members posted to the state of maximum security during their primary assignment.

    The governor gave the assurance during the closing ceremony of the 2018 batch ‘A’ orientation course at NYSC permanent camp, Dakingeri, Suru Local Government Area of Kebbi on Wednesday.

    Represented by the Secretary to the State Government ( SSG ) Alhaji Umar Yauri, Bagudu said “forget about fears and worries in your respective places of primary assignment because adequate security and better welfare arrangements have been worked out for you.

    “I am pleased today to note that you have tremendously adjusted to the new environment, and have also put behind you all agitations and worries of the unknown. Let me use this occasion to inform you that the stater government has put in place adequate measures to ensure that you have a hitch-free service year in Kebbi.

    “I therefore enjoin you to accept your posting as an act of God and report to wherever you are posted to without fear, but equip yourselves with courage and determination to be part of our collective drive to develop the education sector in the state.”

    Gov. Bagudu commended stakeholders in the country for their dedication toward training Nigerian youths through the NYSC, stressing that corps members should live up to the expectations of the scheme by serving the country with diligence and patriotism.

    The NYSC Coordinator in Kebbi, Alhaji Lawal Turawa, commended the corps members for their good conduct and endurance during the 21 days orientation exercise.

    He said “NYSC members posted to Kebbi have indeed chosen and taken the path of greatness by imbibing the good ideals of our founding fathers. They are well prepared to exploit to the fullest the last drop of their energy to serve the country in every nook and cranny of the state”.

    He urged corps members to be law abiding citizens and partner the state to secure the environment.

  • Corps members escape death in Edo

    Scores of members of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) on Saturday escaped death during a carnival celebration at the orientation camp at Okada in Ovia North East local government area.

     The roof of the lecture pavilion the corps members took shelter in during a heavy downpour collapsed on them.

     Witnesses said the incident shocked officials of NYSC who quickly mobilised for the rescue of the trapped victims.

     The witness said no death was recorded as all the trapped victims were rescued with bruises and injuries.

     Those with minor injuries were said to have been taken to the NYSC camp clinic while others were taken to the Igbinedion Teaching Hospital.

     An official of the NYSC who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident and said all the victims were rescued.

  • Akeredolu advises NYSC on ways corps members can be job creators

    Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has advised the governing board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on ways the scheme could also be generating income and self-sustaining.

    Akeredolu, who spoke when a team of the board members paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Akure, said he was ready to help the scheme to improve in the state.

    The governor said that there was nothing wrong if the scheme had it own bakery.

    He said that apart from producing bread, the scheme would even be teaching corps members how to produce bread.

    Akeredolu said that even the foods that corps member ate at the orientation camp could be produced by corps members by investing in farming.

    The governor said the scheme should be tailored towards producing job creators and not job seekers.

    “The permanent orientation camp should be used for development of Nigerian youths. We want them to be job creators,” he said.

    Akeredolu promised to help the NYSC build a perimeter fence to replace the decapitated one at the permanent orientation camp.

    Earlier, a member of the National Governing Board of the NYSC, Joseph Eberedu, congratulated the state for achieving the status of permanent orientation camp from temporary.

    Eberedu, who is also the head of the team, said the NYSC would take the advice of the governor and use the site more purposefully.

    Eberedu, who is also the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, thanked the governor for the renovation work so far done at the camp.

    He said that the environment would be deployed for economic activities that would suite all tribes in the country.

    Mrs Grace Akpabio, the State NYSC Coordinator, thanked the governor for receiving the team and providing enabling environment for corps members in the state.

    Akpabio said the NYSC would always ask for help from the governor who had always been responding to their calls.

  • DG cautions Corps members against keeping late night

    Brig,-Gen. Zakari Sule Kazaure, NYSC Director-General has advised corps members against keeping late night in their places of primary assignment.

    The director-general gave the advice on Sunday night when he visited the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp at Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of the state.

    Kazaure also admonished the corps members to also travel during the day and shun night journey whenever they wished to travel, adding that should seek permission from the relevant authority before embarking on such journey.

    Kazaure said his visit to the camp was to commiserate with the corps members and the camp officials, on the death of a female corps member, Miss Amadi Ichechukwu, last Thursday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Ichechukwu, from Rivers State, had a knee dislocation during ”Tug of War” at the orientation camp and was rushed to the University of Teaching hospital, Ilroin where she was pronounced death.

    Kazaure urged the corps members to take advantage of the various skill acquisition programmes during the orientation for them to be able to start a business after the service.

    According to him, white-collar jobs are no longer readily available for corps members after completing their service, hence the need for them to take the skill acquisition programme very serious.

    He commiserated with the corps members, NYSC and camp officials on the death of the female corps member and prayed God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

    Speaking with journalists later, the director-general said all corps members mobilized for national service had life insurance policy.

    He, therefore, expressed optimism that the Federal Government would pay compensation to the family of the deceased corps member.

    The director-general, however, said it was the responsibility of state governments to provide and maintain facilities at the various orientation camps across the country.

    He appealed to Kwara Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to assist in uplifting the facilities at the Yikpata camp.

    Kazaure expressed happiness that the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, was at the camp and promised to provide more facilities to the camp.

    Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Remignius Amaefule, told the director-general that the visit was devoid of the usual cultural display, Tug of War among others because the camp was in mourning period.

    The director-general, however, donated a cow to the corps members for their camp fire night.

  • Melaye recall: Security, Card Readers effective

    Against apprehensions that Card Readers might malfunction and mar the recall process of Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West), verification officers have confirmed their effectiveness in the exercise.

    Our correspondents who monitored the verification exercise in Lokoja and Kogi Local Government Areas on Saturday also confirmed adequate security and peaceful conduct of the exercise.

    The polling Officer at Ukwo-Okoriko Compound, Ward A, Unit 003, Koton-Karfe, Musa Iliasu and Sen. Dino Melaye verification agent at the unit, Imam Sani said the cards readers did not malfunction throughout the exercise.

    At Banda, Oworo Ward 8, Unit 012, Johnson Salifu also confirmed the functionality of the card reader.

    However, he regretted that only 40 petitioners were verified out of the 512 that appended their signatures for the recall of Sen. Melaye at about 12:09 pm.

    Patricia Aifakokhan, the NYSC Polling Officer at Lokoja Ward B sharing the views of her contemporaries in other units confirmed that the card readers functioned perfectly.

    Aifakokhan said only 42 out of the 850 petitioners from the unit came out to verify their signatures.

    We reports that the verification exercise generally witnessed low turnout as only nine signatures were verified at Lokoja Ward A, unit 015, Amole compound with 1461 registered voters and 450 petitioners.

    At Crowther Memorial College, Lokoja, Ward A, unit 012 with 1507 registered voters and 805 petitioners, only eight came out to verify their signatures.

    At Agbaja, Lokoja local government  some voters protested their  inclusion  on the petitioners’ list. They claimed it was done  without their consent and that their signatures were forged.

    Administrator of Kogi LGA, Mohammed Tanko Musa, said he was impressed with the orderly conduct of the exercise adding that though the township witnessed low turnout, reports from the hinterlands would be different.

  • Electorate shun INEC recall process

    Voters in Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in Kogi have shunned the ongoing verification exercise organised by INEC to authenticate the signatures of voters seeking to recall Sen. Dino Melaye ( APC/Kogi West ).

    Correspondents of the newsmen, monitoring the exercise in Melaye’s Kogi West Senatorial District, observed that the polling units were empty, with many people claiming that they were not aware of it.

    At some areas, youths protested against the move to recall the senator who they described as “an excellent representative”.

    An NYSC member, Miss Opemipo Solomon, the INEC officer at Akafe Lane polling unit, said that no one had shown up since they arrived the voting venue at 6.45 a.m.

    “No one has come to sign the recall papers; what we have had so far are threats from people asking us leave this place.

    “The people do not appear interested in what we are doing. Some youths have come to warn us against staying here,” she said.

    Another corps member, David Adah, INEC presiding officer at the Odo Akete polling unit also in kabba, said that many youths were angry over the recall process.

    “So many youths from the community are angry; they have alleged that their signatures were forged to endorse the recall process.

    “Most of the youths, who saw their names among those that signed for the recall of Melaye, have disowned the signatures and insisted that they are happy with the Senator,” he said.

    At the embattled senator’s polling unit in Ayetoro Gbede, a traditional ruler, Chief Ojo Adekunle, who led some youths to protest against the recall process, said that they were not aware of Melaye’s offence.

    “Melaye has done so well and we are happy with him; we have no reason to want to recall him,” he said.

    Adekunle told the newsmen that Melaye was the best Senator Kogi West had ever produced, and urged his people not to betray their representative at this trying period.

    Mrs. Vicoria Ajewole, APC Woman Leader in Kabba Local Government, expressed surprise at the recall process, and declared that “it won”t work”.

    “Melaye is our son; there is no way anyone can recall him,” she said.

    At the central area of Kabba town, youths were seen chanting songs in praise of Sen. Dino Melaye. They vowed to resist attempt to disgrace him.

    Efforts to speak with INEC officials at the commission’s office in Kabba proved abortive as they refused to comment on the exercise

    Stern-looking Policemen keeping vigil at the polling points also refused to comment on the exercise.

  • NYSC responds to corps member’s death

    The state coordinator Kwara, Mr Amaefule Remigius has condoled with immediate family of the late female youth corps member in Kwara state.

    NYSC gave her name as Amadi Eva Ichechukwu with registration number KW/18A/0135).

    The late corper hailed from Rivers state.

    The Kwara state Coordinator of NYSC Amaefule Remigius said that the entire NYSC family is saddened by the news of her sudden death.

    The late Amadi Eva is among the 2018 Batch A corps members recently deployed to Kwara state and presently undergoing orientation course at NYSC camp.

    In a statement, spokesperson of NYSC in the state urged members of the public to avoid unnecessary speculations about what led to her death.

    He said “this is not the time to hastily jump into conclusion about the root cause of her death.

    “We are still waiting for the medical findings and report from the NYSC referral hospital.”
    The state coordinator prayed that God should grant her immediate family and the NYSC, fortitude to bear the colossal loss.

  • Female corps member dies in Kwara

    National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kwara state has lost a female corps currently at its Yikpata, Edu local government area’s camp.

    The deceased, Hilda Eva Amadi was said to have died due to injuries she sustained during the “Man o War” drilling exercise at the ongoing orientation camp.

    The deceased who studied Oil and Gas at University of Port Harcourt, it was gathered was said to have been full of life before her mobilisation for the one year mandatory service to father land.

    Investigations revealed that the deceased was said to have fallen off the string in the course of Man o War drilling exercise at the orientation camp.

    A source said after falling of the string, she was hurriedly rushed to the NYSC clinic at the camp for medical attention.

    The added that medical personnel who are also corps members attended to her at the clinic.

    However, it was also gathered that when the deceased condition worsened NYSC management rushed to General Hospital in Ilorin, the state capital for further medical attention where she reportedly died.

    It was gathered that Miss Amadi’s life would have been saved if she had been immediately taken to a functional hospital.

    A source accused the NYSC management of negligence.

    State spokesperson of NYSC, Mr. Oladipo Morakinyo the death of the corper.

    He said that, the autopsy and corollary reports are being waited to know the real cause of her death.

    “It is true we lost a corper, but NYSC will soon issue an official statement to that effect,” Mr. Morakinyo added.
