Fire razes Edo NYSC secretariat
The store section and offices at the Edo State secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were razed by fire at the weekend.
Items including 5,000 mattresses, wheel barrows, documents and others were destroyed.
It was learnt the fire was caused by a refuse dump set on fire at a nearby building.
Eyewitnesses said intervention by men of the Edo State Fire Service and Air Force officers prevented the inferno from spreading to the finance and account units.
NYSC Coordinator Mr. Yusuf Abdulahi could not be reached for comments, but sources said he would assess the level of damage.
An official, who preferred anonymity, said: “The fire started about 3p.m. on Saturday. A woman was burning refuse at a nearby building. The fire was near the fence.
“The workers know about the fire; they have been coming to see the affected areas since yesterday (Saturday) . The inferno also affected a canteen.”
NYSC spokesman Benjamin Esan confirmed the incident. He said he would give details today.
Esan said: “Yes, I heard about it. It happened at the weekend, but I was not there. I learnt the fire service officials were there.
“We’ve just returned from camp. So, I cannot really say much until Monday.”

Lagos NYSC appeals for new permanent orientation camp
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Co-ordinator in Lagos State, Prince Mohammed Momoh, has appealed to the state government to expedite action on the construction of a permanent orientation camp on the land allocated to the scheme in Agbowa, Ikorodu.
Momoh, who thanked the government for donating the land at the closing ceremony of 2,868 Batch B Stream 2 corps members, which held last Monday at the Iyana Ipaja NYSC Orientation camp, said he hoped the funding for the construction of the new camp would be provided for in the 2018 budget.
“We specially thank His Excellency for the allocation of land at Agbowa for the construction of a permanent orientation camp, befitting the status of Lagos State. It is our fervent hope and prayer that the construction of the orientation camp would be included in the next year’s budget,” he said.
In an interview, Momoh lamented that limited space at the Iyana Ipaja camp restricted the corps members from undergoing the three-week orientation programme in Lagos despite the state having the highest absorptive capacity for primary assignment posting in Nigeria.
He said after the orientation programme, the state gets as many as the number of corps members originally assigned to it redeployed from other states.
He, however, said the situation was not ideal as the redeployed corps members were not able to respond appropriately to their environment because they missed out of the orientation programme.
“Lagos is the only state in the Southwest without a permanent orientation camp. Yet, Lagos has the highest absorptive capacity in the country for places of primary assignments. If we can get a camp that can accommodate up to 5,000 corps members, more would be posted to Lagos and not have to be redeployed from other states,” he said.
Momoh added that getting the camp constructed during his tenure would be a great achievement.
Addressing the corps members, he advised them to take their posting “in good faith” and desist from unnecessary travels outside the state.
“Let me strongly advise our dear corps members to obey the rules of NYSC as the scheme will not hesitate to punish erring corps members as spelt out in the NYSC bye-law. It is pertinent to warn you not to play truancy and desist from engaging in acts capable of denting the image of the scheme. Do not embark on unauthorised journeys outside Lagos State as many have met their untimely death through such journeys,” he warned.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo, also counseled the corps members to give their best wherever they are posted, promising that their efforts would be rewarded.
“I assure you of the warm reception that awaits you wherever you may be posted for your primary assignment. You must strive to put in your best and make positive impact in your various places of primary assignment. Excellent performance will be duly recognised and rewarded at the end of the service year,” he said.

“To be sincere, the facilities on the camp is not adequate but we are going to do something about it very soon” he said.

NYSC to establish skills acquisition centres nationwide – DG
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said it will soon establish skills acquisition centres in the six geo-political zones to train corps members in various trades.
“The idea behind the establishment of the centres is to give all corps members the training to become self reliant after their service year,” NYSC Director General, Brig. – Gen. Suleiman Kazure, said.
He told the 5,000 corps members deployed to Katsina State on Saturday in Katsina that the skills acquisition centres would be established with the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bank of Industry.
Kazaure urged the corps members to concentrate and learn the necessary skills during training on entrepreneurship and skills acquisition.
“The NYSC wants you to start your own businesses or trades immediately after service year instead of waiting for the jobs that will take years to get.
“We don’t want our ex-corps members to be roaming the streets of Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos, Enugu and Port Harcourt looking for white collar jobs.
“The truth of the matter is that the white collar jobs are in short supply and only lucky ones among you will get the jobs,” he said.
The Director General called on the corps members not to be arrogant while undergoing training, as it would offer them opportunities to become millionaires in their chosen trades.
Kazaure warned them against embarking on unnecessary journeys, as anyone found would be sanctioned according to the rules of the NYSC.
He appealed to them to respect the culture and tradition of the people of the state, assuring them that Katsina State is one of the most peaceful states in the country. (NAN)

NYSC, JAMB set up committee to regularise admission
THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) have agreed to set up a committee to address issue of abuse of regularisation of admission by corps producing institutions.
It followed a complaint by the NYSC management to JAMB alleging irregularities in the process, thereby making mobilisation of prospective corps members difficult.
“In view of the abuse the regularisation of admissions has been subjected, JAMB should revise the window of post-graduation regularisation by introducing measures that will make it impossible for institutions to abuse the process,” NYSC stated in a letter to JAMB.
It is now mandatory for all graduates to be cleared by JAMB before qualifying for mobilisation by the NYSC.
During a meeting of the two agencies in Abuja, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, confirmed the allegation, but noted that the board had taken measure to address the issue.
Quoting the NYSC letter, Oloyede lamented the rate some students were desperate to regularise their admission.
“A new template has been designed by the board for all candidates, who need to be regularised and is to be completed online.
“After completing the forms online, a candidate will print an indemnity form, which must be endorsed by his / her Vice Chancellor/Rector/Provost and submitted to the state JAMB office. This is to ensure that only genuinely admitted candidates are regularised,” he said.
The don added that from the last quarter of 2016, the board received 953 applications for change of date of birth with 77 out of it approved.
It also received 68 applications for change of state/local government area with 39 applications approved.
The board got 518 applications for correction of name and 423 approved.
NYSC Director General Brig-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure solicited the cooperation of JAMB to have access to the number of students admitted on yearly basis.
He supported the idea of a tripartite meeting of JAMB, NYSC and National Universities Commission (NUC) to address some irregularities.
Brig-Gen. Kazaure stated that it was unfortunate that some institutions were sending part-time graduates for mobilisation.
