FG begins payment of revised N77,000 NYSC allowance

After months of delays, the Federal Government has commenced the payment of the revised N77,000 monthly allowance for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Several corps members confirmed receiving credit alerts reflecting the increased stipend on Wednesday, ending the prolonged wait that had led to frustration and protests.

This comes days after the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, assured Nigerians during a television interview that payments would be made by the end of March.

However, while the new stipend has been disbursed, arrears owed to corps members remain unsettled.

A source in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) confirmed that the outstanding arrears were not paid with the new allowance.

The official explained that the government was still working on the details and assured that the backlogs would be cleared soon.

The increase in corps members’ allowances was first announced in September 2023, raising the monthly stipend from N33,000 to N77,000 to align with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. Despite the approval, implementation stalled due to financial constraints and administrative processes.

Speaking on the matter, Olawande defended the government’s slow response, stating that while President Bola Tinubu had approved the raise months ago, the required budgetary allocations were not in place at the time.

“It was not in the budget when the President announced it. Some agencies and parastatals need to have their salaries included in the budget before anything can be done or paid out,” he said.

The Minister clarified the necessary budgetary adjustments had been completed, allowing the government to proceed with payments.

“Anybody can approve anything, but you must have a budgetary allocation for it. Now, they are done with the process. It has been approved and signed. Now, they can start taking it,” he added.

The Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, also gave assurances last week that corps members would begin receiving payments this month.

While the disbursement of the N77,000 allowance marks a significant milestone, corps members continue to anticipate the resolution of pending arrears, hoping that the government follows through on its promises without further delays.

Minister commissions solar-powered water project at NYSC orientation camp

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, has inaugurated a solar-powered water project at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Kubwa, Abuja, as part of the 2025 World Water Day celebration.

During the commissioning, Prof. Utsev expressed satisfaction that the facility, donated by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, will provide clean water to thousands of corps members annually.

He underscored the importance of access to clean water, particularly in camp environments, emphasizing its role in promoting hygiene and safeguarding public health for young Nigerians serving their country.

“This project is a testament to our commitment to ensuring sustainable access to clean water. It will enhance hygiene and sanitation at the NYSC camp, protecting the health of our young graduates as they serve the nation,” Utsev stated.

While addressing the broader theme of this year’s World Water Day – “Glacier Preservation”, the minister warned that although Nigeria does not have glaciers, their rapid melting due to climate change is triggering global water crises that directly impact the country.

He noted that erratic rainfall, desertification, flooding, and food insecurity are worsening due to climate-induced water disruptions.

“Glaciers are the canary in the coal mine for climate change. Their melting signals a global water crisis, and Nigeria is not immune. Rising temperatures are worsening desertification, threatening food security, and causing devastating floods,” he said.

He highlighted how Nigeria is already feeling the effects: unpredictable rainfall and flooding are affecting over 70% of the agricultural sector, water shortages are worsening in the North, coastal states are facing rising sea levels, and extreme weather patterns are disrupting livelihoods.

To tackle these challenges, the Federal Government is implementing various water security initiatives, including the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (PEWASH) to expand rural water access, the National WASH Action Plan to make Nigeria Open Defecation Free (ODF) by 2025, and the SURWASH program, a $700 million World Bank-backed initiative to provide drinking water to six million Nigerians.

The minister also stressed the need for urgent action from state governments, private sector players, and communities in tackling water-related climate issues.

He urged the Federal Government to continue investing in sustainable water infrastructure, called on state authorities to enforce water conservation policies, and encouraged businesses and individuals to adopt eco-friendly water management practices.

Prof. Utsev thanked UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank for their continued partnership and support in strengthening Nigeria’s water resilience.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to clean water for all Nigerians.

The Director-General (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, expressed gratitude to the minister for his giant strides in ensuring Nigerians have access to clean water.

He noted that the newly commissioned water project would be instrumental in providing safe water for young Nigerians during their national service.

In a statement by the acting Director of Information and Public Relations of the NYSC, Caroline Embu, the director-general, who thanked the corps members for their selfless service to the nation, advised them to remain calm, dedicated, focused and disciplined.

He praised the founding father of the scheme for conceiving the vision, suggesting that all and sundry should rally round the scheme.

Nafiu described the NYSC as a beautiful scheme that is building bridges and exposing graduate youths to learn and understand the cultural values of places outside their places of birth.

The DG promised that the scheme’s management would continue to instill the virtues of patriotism, discipline, self-restraint, good morals, leadership qualities and teamwork in the successive batches of corps members.

He said: “With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of N77,000 as your monthly allowance.

“The NYSC is good at record-keeping. I can assure you that your money will be paid. The nation and the scheme appreciate you.”

Speaking on behalf of her colleagues at G arki zone, a corps member, Zaka Deborah Alheri, hailed Nafiu for his conscientious efforts towards the payment of their increased monthly allowance.

Also, the Federal Government has authorised the NYSC to mobilise full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates for the national service.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who broke the news, confirmed that only full-time HND graduates are eligible and can now proceed with their mobilisation.

The Federal Government has given the go – ahead to the National Youth Service Corps to mobilise full time Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates for tnational service.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who broke the news, confirmed that only full-time HND graduates are eligible and can proceed with their mobilisation.

The government urged the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to expedite the collation of data for eligible HND graduates, adding that a circular has been sent to all Rectors of Polytechnics, instructing them to upload the necessary graduate data onto the newly created HND admission portal to facilitate the mobilisation process.

Before, HND graduates who did part – time to obtain their National Diploma were not eligible to serve because they didn’t have the requirements to be mobilised for national service.

This was further compounded by the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to stop regularisation of illegal admissions, making it difficult for them to obtain admission letters which would have qualified them for service.

A statement by Director, Press & Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade on Thursday in Abuja, said: “The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is pleased to announce the resolution of the long-standing issue regarding the mobilisation of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). “Dr. Alausa emphasised that NYSC mobilisation is strictly for those who completed a full-time HND program, stressing that only full-time HND graduates will be mobilised, while those who did HND part-time remain ineligible. He further disclosed that the newly created portal will ensure proper documentation of full-time HND graduates and serve as the official database for NYSC mobilisation, addressing past challenges related to admission records.

“The Honourable Minister urges all eligible full-time HND graduates to take full advantage of this opportunity and proceed with their mobilisation without delay. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for all qualified Nigerian graduates and ensuring their contributions to national development through the NYSC scheme.”

Presidential aide clarifies comment on corps member’s social media post

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, has refuted claims that he called for extreme punishment against National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, who recently criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a social media post.

Ajayi’s response follows backlash over his initial remarks, in which he suggested that the strictest NYSC disciplinary code should apply to Uguamaye’s actions.

In a statement issued on Monday, he dismissed allegations of advocating for measures beyond the established NYSC by-laws.

An online news medium, People’s Gazette, had claimed that Ajayi called for Uguamaye’s execution by hanging or firing squad while reacting to the post of the corps member.

However, in his reaction to the news report, Ajayi clarified his comment, which he said had been twisted out of his original meaning for mischievous reasons.

According to the statement he made available to journalists at the State House, the presidential spokesman said “It has become imperative to dispel the misrepresentation and patent mischief that has trailed my comment on a Facebook post.

“I suggested that flagrant and open abuse and disregard of NYSC by-laws and established protocol should attract the full NYSC disciplinary measures, particularly regarding a corps member’s recent display of imprudence,” Ajayi clarified.

He emphasised that the NYSC’s maximum penalty for disciplinary breaches is expulsion and that he never implied any action beyond what is stipulated by the scheme’s regulations.

“It is trite to say the maximum punishment under the NYSC protocol is expulsion; nothing beyond the established norms and laws is suggested or remotely implied,” he stated.

The controversy arose after Uguamaye made a social media post labeling President Tinubu a “terrible leader.”

Ajayi’s initial comment was perceived by some as a call for harsh retribution, sparking debate over freedom of expression within the NYSC.

Defending the integrity of the NYSC, Ajayi described it as a “historic and treasured national programme that should not be sullied and ridiculed by indiscipline,” stressing its role in fostering national unity.

“The NYSC scheme symbolizes our triumph over division and our consistent effort to forge a more potent and virile union,” he added.

Ajayi concluded by urging Nigerians to uphold values of dignity, discipline, and mutual respect, noting that these principles remain essential for national cohesion.

NYSC relocates monthly clearance centre amid Osun LG crisis

Amid the ongoing crisis in the Osun State local government areas over control tussles, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has relocated the monthly clearance centers for corps members.

The Nation recalled that since February 17, 2025, there have been crises in local government following the Court of Appeal’s reinstatement of council executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were elected on October 15, 2022.

The crisis, which has lingered for weeks, resulted in the killings of both APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains over control of 30 councils in the state.

Local government activities, including NYSC affairs, have suffered as a result.

The office of the Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the scheme, among others, is located in the councils.
