Fed Govt plans NYSC training scheme equivalent for NCE graduates

The Federal Government plans to introduce a training scheme equivalent to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for graduates of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Olawande Wisdom has hinted.

The minister dropped the hint at the opening of the BEMORE OYO 2024 Summer Bootcamp in Ibadan yesterday.

Wisdom said his mnistry would partner with the Ministry of Education to introduce new training reforms, one of which is the equivalent of NYSC training for NCE holders and others.

He said social vices had been for long but the training of youths by organisations such as the Boys’ Brigade, Girl Guides and others had kept many away from them.

He said: “The major priority of the ministry is the citizenship and training, and we are bringing them back.

“We have NYSC for those who finished from universities, but what of those who finished from NCE and others?

“So, we want to set up a training programme such that you don’t need to go to other states to have it – you can have it in your state and the camp.

“A lot of reforms are going on and we are trying as much as possible to bring a renewed hope to people; to the girls and boys.”

He commended the founder of BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, for contributing immensely to the development of the girl-child and raising the bar of excellence.

The minister, however, called for support for BEMORE and other organisations in the course of the Nigerian women and girls.

Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the wife of the former governor of Ondo State, corrected the erroneous belief that the initiative belonged to and was bankrolled by the Ondo State Government.

She said the initiative’s interest is the building of future female leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Mrs. Anyanwu-Aeredolu stated that the initiative had been promoting the advancement of the girl-child born out of her life’s experience while growing up.

“We cannot achieve development if we leave behind 50 per cent of our population, made up of women and girls,” she said.

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Odu’a Investments, Mr. Abdulrahman Yinusa, urged participants to take full advantage of the knowledge imparted at the training.

He commended the organisers and mentors for investing in the future of girls through technological initiatives that would drive the future towards sustainability.

The event featured a training session by the Red Cross Society on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

It was followed by the launch of a book titled: “The history of BEMORE – A historical voyage,” by Esther Michael.

    • Culprits to face prosecution

The National Youth Service Corps has demobilised 54 graduates of the University of Calabar that allegedly mobilised the university for national service.

The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed said another 19 among them that initially registered online for mobilisation have been prevented from service, while four Certificates of National Service for other culprits were not produced by the Scheme.

He said that the culprits would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

In a statement by its Director, Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa yesterday.

The statement said: “In its continuous efforts to prevent unqualified graduates from getting the NYSC Certificate National Service, a total of 54  Corps Members that were illegally mobilised by the University of Calabar have been demobilised by the NYSC management.

“Another 19 among them that initially registered online for mobilisation have been prevented from service, while four Certificates of National Service for other culprits were not produced by the Scheme.

“This is in addition to the earlier 101 certificates that were recently voided by the Scheme, making a total of 178.”

Speaking further, General Ahmed said the NYSC would leave no stone unturned towards sanitising its mobilisation process.

He said: “The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list and they ought not to have been there.

“She checked the list the school gave us and I told her that their certificates would be invalidated. I give kudos to the Vice-Chancellor.

“Previously, a bread seller was mobilised on the graduation list from the same institution. There are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates.”

The NYSC boss further assured that the Scheme would intensify its collaboration with all the Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders in the country in order to stop the
