  • OAAN appoints Okorocha patron

    THE Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) has appointed Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha as its patron.

    Its President, Mr. Charles Chijide made the announcement during a visit to Okorocha in Owerri, the state capital, to kickstart the association’s 29th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

    Okorocha donated land to the association on the condition that OAAN builds its headquarters there. He also urged OAAN members to use their platforms to promote good leadership.

    “I want the members of your association to partner the state government by deploying innovative billboards and signages across the state and assist in the implementation of my administration’s transformation agenda by using the billboards to spread the message of good leadership,” the governor said.

    The visiting OAAN members which comprised the executive council and members of the board of trustees.

    Chijide thanked the governor for his generosity, saying the land would be used as the regional headquarters of the association in the Southeast.

    He also thanked the governor for  hosting the association despite the  short notice. He praised the governor for appointing a member of OAAN, Mr. Theo Ekechi, as commissioner for Information.

    During the business meeting of the AGM, the association inducted three new members and upgraded four others. The inducted agencies include Spot On Media Limited, Eminem Global Concept Limited and Giottos Graffix Display Limited.

    Four agencies were upgraded into full membership of the association. They are Spread Out Limited, Ex-Summit Limited, Malleable Communications and Touch Points Limited.

    Star shines at OAAN Awards

    Star lager beer, produced by Nigerian Breweries (NB), won three awards at the just-concluded Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) Awards.

    They are the Grand Poster, Best Creative, and Grand Prix awards.

    At the Eighth OAAN Exhibition and Poster Awards at the Eko Hotel, Lagos, Star was awarded the Grand Poster Award for producing the best creative brands in the eight categories. They included dairy/food/beverages, non-alcoholic drinks, alcoholic drink and electrical/electronics.

    Other categories were public service, telecoms/ICT, household and financial services.

    President OAAN,   Mr. Charles Chijide, said: “The award was initiated to reward excellence in outdoor creativity.”

    According to him, it was the association’s way of appreciating the cerebral work that has gone into creating the messages through which advertisers connect with their various targets using OAAN platform.

    The Marketing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Walter Drenth, said since  2012, NB had been focusing on improving outdoor advertising creativity for all the brands.

    Managing Director of the  Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency (LASAA) Mr George Noah, has assured members of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) of quality services. This, he said, would ensure that stakeholders operate in a healthy environment in the state.

    Speaking when OAAN executives hosted him at the association’s secretariat in Lagos, Noah said: “I want to assure you that any decision we take at LASAA, is in your best interest. We want to reduce the burden on practitioners. Our job is to create an enabling environment for any practitioners.’’

    He said the formation of Outdoor Advertising Regulatory Association of Nigeria (OARAN) is to solve the problem, adding that beyond rate reduction, there is the problem of mobile adverts across the states, which could be better resolved through the OARAN platform. “We want you to see our collaboration with other states as being a good step for the outdoor advertising industry,” Noah said.

    On the forthcoming conference slated to hold from June 25 – 27, Noah said: “It is in our best interest to host the conference regardless of whether you or LASAA organises it. What is important is for our industry to provide a platform to resolve the myriad of industry issues facing us through effective dialogue.”

    He promised to look into the discount to be offered OAAN members to attend the exhibition. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that a working committee be established between OAAN and LASAA foster harmonious relationship.

    Earlier, OAAN President, Mr. Charles Chijide,praised the LASAA team for delivering on its mandate.

    Chijide, however, decried some of the agency’s activities, saying: “My members are concerned that there is a plan by LASAA to increase rates. We also understand that the cost of attending the forthcoming exhibition is high for our members.”

    He noted that OAAN members had also expressed fear that OARAN would do more harm than good.

    The President, Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), Mr. Charles Chijide, has urged the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, to ensure that professionals are appointed for the outdoor advertising in the airport remodelling master plan.

    Chijide said while outdoor and indoor advertising could add beauty to the airports across the country, the airport authorities should endeavour to involve practitioners to help put in place standards that could make the aviation sector master plan deliver on promises.

    “The minister should appoint OAAN members who are experts. We are ready to work with her and ensure standards as its obtainable in developed countries. But to complement her efforts in the ensuring the complete success of the roadmap, OAAN is ready to give support in every necessary area concerning indoor and outdoor advertising within the nation’s international airports,” Chijide said.

    The Managing Director of Grandstride, an outdoor advertising agency, Mr. Banji Idowu, had complained in the past about the monopolisation of operating licence for outdoor players.

    However, the General Manager, Communication, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, said there is a new structure that will guide advertising agencies in mounting advertising hoards at the airport when completed.

    Two Nigerians make board of regional advertising body

    The President of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN),Mr. Charles Chijide and the association’s General Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ajufo, have been elected president and general secretary of the West African body of Out of Home Advertising Association.

    The newly formed body, Federation West Africa Publicity Exterior or better known West African Federation of Out of Home Advertising (WAFOOHA) also has on its executive council level, Mr. Togbo Mensah, a Ghanaian as first vice-president and Mr. Mahama Coulibaly, of Cote D’voire as second vice-president.

    Mr. Frank Dossa, from the Republic of Benin and Mr. Derick Afriye, also a Ghanaian, were elected Treasurer and Director of Protocol.

    In a statement, Ajufo said the association was formed in view of the pre-eminent role out-of-home advertising has been playing in brand building in recent times.

    Besides, he said member countries in West African countries saw the need to come together as one body because of the peculiarities of each markets and in recognition of the universality of their practice and operations.

    Chijide solicited for co-operation, collaboration rather than competition amongst practitioners. He stated that the existence of such a regional body cannot be over emphasized in view of the evolution of digital advertising which is revolutionizing the old traditional out-of-home practice.
