    BREAKING: Lion kills OAU zoo keeper while feeding animals

    A nine-year-old lion has reportedly murdered Olabode Olawuyi, a staff member of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife Zoological Park.

    A statement by the public relations officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirming the incident said Olawuyi, until his death was a Veterinary Technologist, who had been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade.

    He said: “Mr Olawuyi has been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about 9 years ago but, tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them.

    According to the statement, other members of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.

    “Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was informed, on arrival, by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.

    “Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive Lion has been euthanized. The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life.”

    The varsity spokesman said the management had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

    Fellowship alumni invest in payment of OAU student fees

    Some graduate members of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church Unification, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Campus Fellowship have committed over 1.6 million naira to the payment of school fees for undergraduate students of the university for the 2022/2023 session.

    Working under the auspices of Trustees of the Isokan Excellence Bursary Scheme (IEBS), the former students supported the payment of school fees for 25 students who are also members of the Fellowship, in what was the fifth consecutive edition in the series.

    22 individuals received 70 per cent of their school fees for the academic session, while three grantees studying Medicine and Dentistry received N100, 000 each.

    The grantees – 17 females and eight males – were from the faculties of Administration, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Dentistry, Education, Pharmacy, Science, Social Sciences, and Technology.

    In previous editions, N553,200 (4th edition), N414,000 (3rd edition), N146,000 (2nd edition), and N101,000 (1st edition) were disbursed. Also, the number of awardees increased from five at inception in 2018, to seven in 2019, 18 in 2020, 22 in 2021 and now 25 in 2022/23.

    The former OAU students expressed their trust in God for the grace to keep the Scheme growing in decades to come.

    Wildlife centre revives OAU zoo

    Tropical Wildlife Domestication Centre (TWDC) has revived zoological garden of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the management of the institution.

    The challenges facing the zoological garden, which nearly led to the death of some animals like lions, tigers among others, made the wildlife organisation and management to revitalise the garden.

    The Secretary of Board of Trustees of TWDC, Prof. Maxwell Opara, said the organisation had been rehabilitating distressed wildlife species within the OAU wildlife facility.

    The Chairman of the organisation, Mr Francis Abioye, said the organisation signed MoU with the institution two years after they had been taking care of distressed animals.

    OAU final year student crushed to death

    Authorities of the  Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State are  mourning the death of a final year student of Agric Economics, Chisom Nwankwo, who was crushed to death by a commercial motorcyclist. 

    It was gathered that the accident occurred yesterday on Road 1 in Ile-Ife around 10:50am when the motorcyclist carrying a 200-level student of Psychology, Deborah Okunola, wrongfully overtook a Toyota Corolla car, but got hit by the side mirror, resulting in them falling off.

    The commercial motorcyclist carrying Chisom, who was catching a glimpse of the early accident, however, got distracted and lost control of the motorcycle. Consequently a bus coming from behind ran over them.

    It was learnt that they were taken to the school medical centre, but they were later referred to the teaching hospital of the university where Chisom was declared dead.

    OAU spokesman Abiodun Olarewaju confirmed the incident.

    He said: “We have informed the police. We sympathise with the bereaved family.”

    Subair Enitan, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) who participated in the Guinness World Record for longest hand washing marathon, has debunked rumors that she landed in a hospital. 

    Enitan, in a video, extended appreciation to the school, supporters and sponsors, stressing that she did not end up in the hospital despite the challenges of her wash-a-thon attempt.

    Her words: “First of all, I’m sure you can see I’m very much okay. So to the people trending saying I landed in the hospital. I didn’t land in the hospital and these are my hands. I am better.

    “I’ve been in my house with family members, my team members. I’ve been sleeping. I woke up this evening to take pictures. I have been very fine. Just dey play o. Nothing is wrong with me.”

    The Nation reported that the Linguistics and African Languages student began the attempt on November 24 at the Sub Car Park inside the school campus.

    She surpassed her initial plan of 50 hours by washing for 58 hours.

    The Guinness World Record is yet to confirm Enitan’s record-breaking attempt.

    The 200-level student of Linguistics and African Languages at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Miss Subair Enitan, has ended hand wash-a-thon at 58 hours.

    Enitan ended the hand wash-a-thon initially fixed for 50 hours at 12:05 AM on Monday, November 27, which made her surpass the set duration.

    The management of the school led by the deputy vice-chancellor administration, Professor Abayomi Daramola on Sunday, November 26, paid her solidarity visit before ending the task.

    At the end of the task, Enitan said: “I felt I should give up several times, especially when I was pressed, I was like can I go through this thing? That my mum and my friends are in this crowd I feel very fulfilled to complete this task right in front of her.”

    Confirming the development to The Nation on Monday, the Student Union President of OAU, Abbas Akinremi said: “She ended the wash-a-thon in the early hours of Monday and we took her to the university clinic.”

    Earlier, the regional sales manager of Aspira Nigeria Limited, Joseph Adeyemi said the company decided to support the vision of young enterprising Nigerians whose intent is to break new ground.

    GWR: OAU 200-level student begins 50-hour hand wash-a-thon

    Miss Subair Enitan, a 200 level student in the Department of Linguistics and African Languages at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, began a 50-hour hand wash-a-thon aiming to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) on Friday, November 24.

    The Guinness World Record fixed November 24, 2023 for the attempt of wash-a-thon in Ile-Ife after she notified them of her intention in June 2023.

    Before she officially start washing cloths, Enitan had boasted that she would finish strong as title holder of longest hand washing hours after completing 50 hours on Sunday.

    She said: “My background motivated me to embark on this wash-a-thon and the lessons life has taught me. The experience is unexplainable but it taught me to be selfless. I am confident that I will reach the set goal of 50 hours of hand wash and by God’s grace I will emerge victorious.

    “Despite the massive support from my colleagues here, I pray for the grace of God. I will end this wash-a-thon on Sunday. I am setting the record, I can’t lose because nobody has done it before, so if I do it for 5 minutes, I have set the record. My parents are very supportive, I urge Nigerians to rally round me while I do the washing for 50 hours.”

    The Student Union president, Abbas Akinremi-Ojo disclosed that needed supports including provision of ambulance, lighting, water among other logistics have been put in place to ensure she win the challenge.

    The management of OAU through the Dean, Students Affairs, Professor John Odedire said school is ready to give all what it takes to ensure that she clinch the record.

    OAU unveils mascot for West African Universities Games

    Obafemi Awolowo University(OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State is set to host the 15th  edition of West African Universities Games(WAUG) with over 200 institutions to partake in the sporting activities.

    This is just as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire unveiled the mascot for the games noting that the management has used sporting activities to tackle restiveness among its students.

    Speaking during a press conference yesterday, Professor Bamire disclosed that over 200 universities will participate in Nigeria and Universities from Countries within West Africa sub – region in several games including tennis, table tennis, basketball and athletics.

    He noted that having hosted National Universities Games ( NUGA) a few years ago with the state of the arts facilities that are of Olympic standard, the institution(OAU) will still use the same facilities in an upgraded manner.

    He said:  “Sport is very important and I think this was what our forefathers really considered in making sure that we have a standard sport centre in our school to cater for the restiveness of our students even staff. It also an important contributor to ensuring that people are able to think well. The sport activities have helped to tackle and reduce restiveness among our students and give them opportunities to relax.”

    Also, the President of West Africa Universities Sports Federation, Mr Ibrahim Tanko, added: “We are using Nigeria to resuscitate the association which is in line with my aim of rejigging the association. We are relying on OAU to further unifying the region. The competition will be held in December 2023.”

    PCN urges OAU pharmacy graduates to strive for excellence

    The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has advised the newly-inducted 116 pharmacy graduates of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to pursue excellence and service in the pharmacy profession. The induction ceremony, which took place recently at the campus in Ile-Ife, Osun State, was the major highlight of the activities marking the 60th anniversary of the university’s faculty of pharmacy.

     Delivering his welcome address, the Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Francis Abiodun Oladimeji disclosed that the new pharmacists were the 2021 and 2022 graduating set of the Faculty. He said 31 of them were graduating with distinction while the remaining 85 had Pass degrees. “They have been thoroughly baked to veer into any human endeavours for success and survival,” he said while congratulating the inductees for their resilience and determination to survive at all odds. He urged parents and guardians to continue their oversight responsibilities of guiding the young professionals through the school of life.  

     In his speech before inducting the new pharmacists, the Registrar, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed, described the oath-taking and induction as one of the key requirements prescribed by the PCN Establishment Act which has to be fulfilled prior to registration as a pharmacist. “As you take the oath today and become inducted members of the pharmacy profession, I urge you to maintain high ethical standards and leadership skills as prescribed by the PCN as well as endeavour to be worthy professionals for the attainment of excellence in the provision of quality pharmaceutical services for the sustainable healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

     “As pharmacists, you are expected to get yourself acquainted with the code of professional ethics which prescribe your professional and moral responsibilities to the patients, to your pharmacist colleagues, other healthcare professionals, your employer wherever he may be as well as the general public among others. Strict compliance to the code of ethics is indispensible for the practice of pharmacy profession anywhere in the world. After being successfully registered as a pharmacist, you will have the opportunity this time around, of positively competing favourably with your colleagues who you aspire to be like in area of practice. It may be of great interest to you that there is no limitation to where each of you can get to in life. 

    Pharm Ahmed warned the inductees not to indulge in unwholesome practices, saying the council frowns at professional misconduct in its entirety. Earlier in a key note address, Pharm. (Mrs) Folashade Lawal, a renowned community pharmacist and fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy, admonished the new pharmacists to stand tall and be ready to discover, develop and deliver new potentials. “Develop and embrace the right values. The more you make discoveries, the more you are able to develop the discoveries. My dear inductees, the world needs you.  God wants you to stand tall and the decision to stand tall rests on you,” she said.

    BREAKING: OAU reacts over arrest of students by EFCC

    The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has disclosed that it is yet to ascertain the numbers of students arrested by the operatives of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during midnight operation.

    The Nation reports that operatives of EFCC raided a student hostel around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, November 1, and arrested over seventy students, conveying them in white buses to Ibadan, Oyo State.

    The institution through the public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, speaking with The Nation on a telephone conversation, noted that the hostel raided by anti-graft operatives is located outside the school campus.

    He said: “The University has sent delegates to the office of EFCC, we want to be sure of the numbers of our students that were arrested by the operatives.

    “We want to be sure that our students are not unduly harassed or intimidated nor abused. The management has mandated us to go to Ibadan and find out because the welfare of students is important to us.

    “We want to go and see by ourselves so that we can come back and give the management necessary feedback. We are just going there now, it is not only our students that are outside Ife, so we wouldn’t want a situation where people will say all those who were arrested are our students whereas maybe some of them are not our students. We want to know who we want to fight for, who we want to defend and protect.”
