OAU students protest, demand 50% reduction in fees

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State yesterday stormed the main campus to protest slight reduction in fees by the institution.

The Nation recalls that the management last month, after an emergency meeting, announced 300 per cent increment in fees, but later reduced it by 15 per cent to pacify the students.

However, the students yesterday besieged the main gate of the university around 7am, carrying placards. They chanted solidarity songs to press home their demands.

Some of the placards read: ‘Fees must fall’, ‘Let the poor breathe’, ‘Mama dey sell fufu, papa dey ride Okada, where you wan make I see 90k’, ‘You dey whine, fees must fall’, ‘Education sector is bleeding’, among others.

The students barricaded the gate, restricting vehicular movement.

Student Union President Akinremi Ojo said the protest was to demand 50 per cent reduction in fees.

OAU spokesman Abiodun Olarenwaju hailed the peaceful protest, urging the students to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the demonstration.

He said: “I expect them to channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities such as the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Finance or even the Chief of Staff to the President.

“We decided to reduce the initial fees when the leadership of their union persistently demanded re-negotiation. We considered and we held meetings with them. We told them the 50 per cent they are asking for will not be realistic in the long run.

“We told them that we should meet, but they are exhibiting youthful exuberance. Of course, we are allowing them to protest. We’ve been here since morning, we are here together, they are our children and we are their local parents.”
