Ajimobi condems alleged violence at Olubadan’s palace

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has condemned the alleged act of brigandage that occurred during a ceremony at the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji on Monday.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Mr Yomi Layinka, the governor directed security agencies to ensure that the masterminds are swiftly arrested, interrogated and brought to justice.

He vowed not to brook anyone or group of people desirous of bringing back the regime of violence and brigandage to the state.

Ajimobi reiterated his commitment to the security and protection of lives and properties of all citizens of Oyo State, which he said that
his administration laboured hard to restore and maintain in the last six years.

Five yet-to-be identified gunmen invaded the Olubadan palace at Popoyemoja in Ibadan where the monarch was conducting an installation ceremony of newly appointed traditional rulers.

The gunmen, who arrived the scene in a space bus, fired gunshots but  no casualty was recorded in the incident.

One of the gunmen was said to have released volleys of gunshots into the air via the open roof of the vehicle, while others reportedly shot through windows of the vehicle.

An eyewitness said the gunmen wore black clothes and tied red clothes around their heads displaying pump action rifles and A-K47 rifles.

Men of the state joint security task force ‘Operations  Burst’ arrived the palace within five minutes of the incidence to restore normalcy.

NAN reports that the incident had occurred at a time when the monarch was about to commence the installation of four new Baales (village heads) in his palace.

Journalists arriving at the gate of the palace at about 11:45 am, were caught in the fire but they escaped gunshots as they ducked in the drainage in front of the palace.

The gunmen parked their car in front of the palace, shooting sporadically and daring people inside the palace compound to come out and confront them.

However, the shooting did not stop the installation of the Mogajis and Baales.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has called on Nigerians particularly Muslims to imbibe the spirit of love, togetherness and peaceful co-existence as exemplified by Holy Prophet Muhammed.

He spoke with newsmen after the Eid prayers on Friday at Agodi prayer ground, Ibadan.

Ajimobi, who said he prayed for the peace and progress of the state and the country, stressed the need for the people to accept meaningful development.

“I pray that God accepts our supplications and grant our hearts’ desires. I pray that God bless us all.

“This is a time for us to forgive and accept in good faith what God has ordained. The peace and development of this state and Nigeria is sacrosanct,’’ he said.

Ajimobi said it was only in an atmosphere of peace and love that the country and its people could thrive and attain their potential.

“I enjoin you to continue to exhibit love toward your fellow human beings and rededicate yourselves to the service of Almighty Allah and humanity as demonstrated by Prophet Muhammed during his earthly sojourn.”

Ajimobi commended the people for their understanding and continued support for his administration in its quest to redefine governance and take the state to greater heights.

He added:“I want to assure the citizenry that this administration will continue to introduce people-friendly policies.”

The governor, however, congratulated the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, and prayed to God to continue to strengthen him and grant him wisdom.

Ajimobi, who described the monarch as a father of all, urged him to continue to play his fatherly role and shun “external political influence”.

Similarly, the Chief Imam of Ibadan,  Sheikh AbdulGaniy Abubakri, urged Muslims to embrace love, peace, perseverance and total re-dedication to God as they celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir.

“Development thrives only in an atmosphere where peace and harmony exist.’’

He called on Nigerians to fervently pray for the prosperity of the state and the nation and urged them to eschew acts capable of denying them blessings from God.

Olubadan to Ajimobi: I’m not a politician

As the dust settled over the emergence of new obas in Ibadan, the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Monday urged Governor Abiola Ajimobi not to paint him bad before the public, stressing that his decision to oppose the review of the Olubadan chieftaincy system was not political in any way.

In a statement by the Director of Media and Public Affairs to the palace, Mr Adeola Oloko, yesterday, the monarch said: “As a monarch, I’m a father of all, irrespective of sex, ethnic and ideological persuasions.

“Since Friday March 4, 2016, when I ascended the exalted throne of Olubadan I have opened the gate of our palace wide to all manner of people. If you belong to APC, PDP, Labour, Accord and/or more, you are most welcome. So, politics has nothing to do with my resistance or opposition to the chieftaincy review spearheaded by the Oyo State Government.”

Oba Adetunji also described as unfortunate the comment by the governor that recent utterances from the palace are tending towards the political, adding if he (the governor) has any demonstrable evidence of such, he should kindly provide it.

According to him, there is no press statement issued from the Olubadan media office which did not enjoy his blessing before it was made public.

He said: “While I am aware that people react to age differently, I am not old enough to be misinterpreted by anybody, even at 89. Governor Ajimobi stated that he invited us to the Governor’s Office over this matter and visited me in the palace later. While this is true, I wish to respectfully state that the Boade Panel was inaugurated on May 19, 2017, His Excellency, Governor Ajimobi invited me to the Governor’s Office on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 after the panel had sat for 4 weeks. At that meeting, His Excellency, the Oyo State Governor, the High Chiefs and State House correspondents would recall my opposition to the chieftaincy review. My question is: ‘did anybody put words in my mouth in that recorded tape?’ When he invited me to his office and visited me in the palace on Sunday, June 18, 2017, the Boade Panel was almost through with its job, when we met at the inner chamber, what the State Governor came to tell me was that he knew I should have been consulted first. So, it is not true that I was consulted, as claimed by him.

“If I had been consulted, this error would have been avoided. The desecration of the crown would have been averted.”

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, who congratulated all Ibadan people on keeping the peace, assured that these times would pass.

Oba Adetunji commended all his brother-monarchs for their solidarity and cooperation, saying his opposition to the mass coronation exercise was to prevent breakdown of law and order, complication and dire consequences in Ibadan Chieftaincy System.

    • Oyo scraps Seriki lineage

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has distanced himself from the mass coronation of 21 new Obas in Ibadan today.

The historic coronation takes place at the Mapo Hall.

The Oyo State Government presented letters of conferment to 21 of the 32 newly elevated Ibadan high chiefs and Baales last Friday following adoption of the recommendations of the panel that reviewed the 1959 Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

The panel was headed by retired Justice Akintunde Boade.

As the new Obas rejoice and prepare to receive crowns as traditional rulers, the Olubadan said he had no hand in the event.

In a statement by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Mr Adeola Oloko, yesterday, Adetunji said the coronation does not enjoy his blessing.

His name is reportedly listed as the Father of the Day on the programme for the event.

The statement reads: “I have said it for the umpteenth time that I am opposed to the chieftaincy review and its recommendations as the process for such exercise has not been followed.

“Therefore, I cannot see how, as being advertised in some media houses, I could possibly play a fatherly role in an exercise that I have not endorsed.

“Besides, as the father of Ibadan indigenes irrespective of political and ideological persuasion, I cannot attend an occasion where local government executives of one political party have been sending text messages to the party members in Ibadan land to mobilise for the event as if it is a political rally.

“So, as the prescribed and appointing authority on Ibadan chieftaincy matters, I consider, until otherwise reversed, that any conferment of crowns on anybody is an exercise in futility.”

The Olubadan added: “More so, it is going to be contemptuous for anybody to attend that programme as there are two suits that are yet to be determined before the court.

“Also, where is the humanity of the organisers of this programme when Ibadan land is still mourning the passage of the Otun Balogun, High Chief Dr. Femi Olaifa, who was one of them until Thursday August 24?”

Also, the Governor Abiola Ajimobi- led administration has scrapped the Seriki line in the Olubadan chieftaincy step.

The development followed adoption of the recommendation of the Justice Akintunde Boade commission of Enquiry on the review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration of 1959.

The Seriki line, headed by Chief Adebayo Oyediji, has been in a running legal battle with the Olubadan chieftaincy on which line was due to produce the next Olubadan currently occupied by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso 1.

The elderly Ibadan chieftain had challenged the legality and propriety of the state government to appoint the reigning Olubadan from the Balogun line despite an existing law that pitch the Seriki line to produce the Olubadan.

The scrapping of the Seriki line is contained in the document No. 14, Vol. 42, Oyo State Notice No. 27 dated 23rd August, 2017 and titled “Government White Paper by Technical Committee on the Report of Judicial Commission of Enquiry on the Review of the Existing Olubadan of Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration and other Related Chieftaincies in Ibadanland.”

According to the gazette, only the Olubadan and Balogun lines should continue to provide candidate for filling of any vacancy in the Olubadan Chieftaincy.

While agreeing with the recommendation, the technical committed however added a proviso that Olubadan  line should now be known as Otun Olubadan line.

Members of the government committee which considered the report and recommendations of the Justice Boade Commission include the Governor’s Executive Assistant on Political Matters, Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, as the chairman; the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Gbade Ojo as member and the Coordinating Director (Cabinet and Security Services) with Mr. F.N. Oladeinde as the secretary.

Other members are: the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Oluseun Abimbola; Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Toye Arulogun and Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Abimbola Kolade.

Others include: Special Adviser on Community Relations, Abidemi Siyanbade; Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Yomi Layinka, and Special Adviser on Due Process, Mrs. Rose Oyedele.

The issue of the Seriki which forms the third recommendation of the commission could be taken as a response to the second term of reference given the Judicial commission of enquiry which borders on “reviewing the selection process of Olubadan of Ibadanland from Otun and Balogun lines.”

The gazette reads: “Commission’s Recommendation 3: it is recommended that further filling of vacancy in the Seriki line should be stopped forthwith and the line should be abolished. The commission agreed with the suggestion that only the Olubadan and Balogun lines should continue to provide candidate for filling of any vacancy in Olubadan chieftaincy.

“Government accepts this recommendation with a proviso that Olubadan line should now be known as Otun Olubadan line.”

“It is by divine arrangement and not sheer coincidence that Olubadan’s birthday is coming at a period Ibadanland is witnessing a major transformation and boost in royalty, which is aimed at enhancing the status of the ancient city,” he said.

He prayed that God would imbue the monarch with greater wisdom and knowledge for the benefit of the people of Ibadanland, as he nears the nonagenarian status.

  • Royal blessing for Oyo governorship aspirant

A governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Mr Raufu Olaniyan, has received a royal blessing for his ambition from the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

Olaniyan, who is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC), received the blessing when he visited the monarch at his Popoyemoja palace.

He informed the monarch of his ambition to succeed Governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2019, explaining that his experience in the public service for three decades and the love to serve his people spurred him to join the race.

Olaniyan, who was a General Manager, Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYSROMA), later retired as a permanent secretary.

He was welcomed to the palace by the Ekarun-un Olubadan, High Chief Hamidu Ajibade.

While introducing the former OYSROMA boss to Oba Adetunji, the high chief described the aspirant as humanitarian, adding that he had helped a lot of people, not just in Ibadanland but the entire state.

He said as OYSROMA boss, Olaniyan supervised the construction of several roads within the Ibadan metropolis and all over the state.

High Chief Ajibade said aside his pedigree and commitment to service of humanity, Olaniyan is also a man of honesty and integrity.

He explained that Olaniyan was at the palace to receive the royal blessing of the Olubadan for his ambition in 2019, adding that at this time in the history of the state, Oyo needs an experienced technocrat like Olaniyan to preside over its affairs.

Speaking on the purpose of his visit, Olaniyan, who thanked the Olubadan for the audience, said his political philosophy was engineered towards the welfare of the people, noting that once the people are taken care of, meaningful development would naturally take place.

He said developing human capital through qualitative education would be the focal point of his administration, adding that he would also champion developmental projects that would be of benefits to the people, not in Ibadan alone, but the entire state.

Oba Adetunji prayed for the success of the aspirant’s ambition.

One dead, others injured in Ibadan ‘Egungun’ festival violence

The Oyo State Police Command on Monday  confirmed the death of one person in the violence  that trailed  the public outing of the Ege masquerade in Ibadan on Sunday.

The police spokesman in the state, ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday that  two suspects were also  arrested  in  connection with the incident.

NAN reports  that  violence had marred the Egungun festival  on Sunday as many residents were assaulted while properties were destroyed.

The festival, which often featured  displays by  masquerades, is meant to showcase the rich culture and tradition of  Ibadanland.

Ajisebutu, however, said that the command had  beefed up security in the area where the Egungun festival was taking place.

He said the state Commissioner of  Police, Abiodun Odude, had  warned all  masquerades and their followers to refrain from  violence.

The police, he said,  would not hesitate to deal with any individual  or group attempting to cause  a breach of  the peace..

Meanwhile, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji,  has expressed displeasure with Sunday’s violence.

He said several meetings were held with stakeholders on the need to keep the peace before the festival commenced.

Adetunji,  who commiserated  with victims  of the violence and their families,  pledged  that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
