OBA of Lagos Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu has called on Nigerians, particularly Lagosians, to ensure the return of President Muhammadu Buhari, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and his deputy, Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni, in the 2019 general elections.

The Lagos monarch spoke at the weekend in his palace when Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures visited him in the course of their quarterly meeting in Lagos.

Oba Akiolu, who described the quartet as having performed well in their course of duty, said: “They have done well. And going by their performances during the few years that they have been saddled with the leadership positions, they have shown to all and sundry that they can do more if given the opportunity again.”

The Lagos monarch advised politicians to work for the interest and welfare of Nigerians.

“Politicians can only do this by settling their differences amicably. Politics is characterised by alignment and re-alignment of personnel, but in doing this, politicians should not take actions or make utterances that can heat up the polity.

“We should ensure that we live in peace and harmony and that’s when the country can grow and develop. Through this, Nigerians will enjoy real dividends of democracy,” Oba Akiolu said.

Kebbi State House of Assembly Speaker and outgoing Chairman of the Conference of Speakers Ismaila Kamba described Oba Akiolu as a man of honour and integrity.

  • Aregbesola, Obasa mourn Aboderin

Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has described the death of the Chairman of Punch Newspaper, Mr. Wale Aboderin, as shocking and very sad. Aregbesola said the late Aboderin exited at a time he was most needed in the media and sporting sectors. The Governor noted that while alive, the deceased was a pillar of sports, particularly basketball, on which he devoted time and invaluable resources.

“I received with shock and utmost sadness the news of the death of Mr Wale Aboderin, the Chairman of the Punch Newspaper. To say that the news of his death was sad and devastating is an understatement. It sounded like a dream but the reality of the story jolted me back to the obvious – death, the necessary end of every creature. The deceased was a nice, quite unassuming and easygoing gentleman when alive. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was a man of deep conviction of his Christian faith but tolerant of others and never imposing.

“His death no doubt has left a huge void in the Nigerian media and sporting industries that will be difficult to fill. It is my sincere prayer that God will comfort his wife and children, the Aboderin family and Punch newspaper. On behalf of my family, the Government and good people of Osun, I commiserate with Wale’s immediate family, the entire Aboderin family and Punch newspaper on his departure,” the Governor said.

Also, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,  Mudashiru Obasa has condoled with the staff and management of the Punch newspaper over Aboderin’s death. “He was such a versatile man. Apart from being the Chairman of one of Nigeria’s leading newspapers, the Punch; he was not also a basketballer he also owned a basketball team, Dolphins, which have represented the country in many international competitions; while he also owned a musical band, the Rapture.

“Indeed, Nigeria will miss his resourcefulness and versatility which had contributed in no small measures to nation building,” Rt. Hon Obasa said. On behalf of my colleagues at the Lagos State House of Assembly, I condole with the Aboderin family of Ibadan and the management and staff of the Punch newspaper on the loss of this illustrious Nigerian,” Rt. Hon. Obasa said

  • Why we should profile domestic staff — Obasa

The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Mudashiru Obasa says profiling of househelps will help to ensure they are traceable when they get involved in child abuse or criminal tendencies.
Obasa said this at a Public Hearing on a Bill For a Law for the Registration of Domestic Staff Service Providers in Lagos State and for other Connected Purposes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the objective of the proposed law is to register Domestic Staff Service Providers operating in Lagos State.
Obasa, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni said that the House was poised to improve safety in various homes where domestic staff are engaged.
“The services of all domestic staff, be it houshelps, drivers, gardeners, security men and others are quite germane.
“Many homes have suffered one abuse or the other from these house helps. We need to ensure we don’t engage those who will harm us.
“Profiling these house helps will help to ensure that those employed can be traced in case of child abuse or criminal tendencies.
“The bill will also outlaw hiring of underage as domestic staff, ” Obasa said.
The speaker said that the security of lives and property remain the primary responsibility of government.
In his contribution,  Mr Femi Falana (SAN) described the bill as “unprecedented”.
He urged the House to take cognisance of the existing Child Rights Law and Domestic Violence Law of the state.
Falana said there was a need for the state to partner with the Nigeria Immigration Service to checkmate human traffickers who pose as domestic staff providers.
On abuse of domestic staff, Falana said that slavery should be avoided.
He said that nationals of neighboring countries should be registered to trace every domestic staff.
The senior advocate said that the bill should provide for medical examination of domestic staff brought into the state to prevent spread of diseases.
“There should also be an annual report to be submitted to the House through the registrar on the state of domestic staff, to regularly checkmate increasing wave of domestic violence,” Falana said.
Earlier, Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, the Chairman, House Ad hoc Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) said that the bill was essential to make homes safe.
Tejuosho said that the 18-section bill would protect both employees and employers of domestic staff and make everyone who engaged domestic staff sleep with his or her two eyes closed.
“The bill if passed into law, will prevent all forms of domestic violence and ensure peace in the various homes where domestic staff are engaged.
“With the bill, we are sure of where the employees and employers are coming  from. The bill also provides for a guarantor and their verifiable details.
“Some people employ domestic staff and leave their children in the hands of those strangers they know nothing about, and so many families are regretting today.
“We have a lot of cases of child abuse today, we have cases of employers abusing domestic staff, we have issues of theft, violence and neglect all over.
“There is no way a man or woman can provide the best service at the workplace if their homes are not in safe hands. This bill is very germane,” she said.
NAN reports that the bill seeks the provision of platform for the creation of a data base of all domestic staff service providers operating in the state and all domestic staff in their employment.
It seeks to ensure that child protection agencies, local authorities and law enforcement agencies have access to vital information relating to domestic staff service providers in the state when required. (NAN)

  • Indigenous language: Army deserve commendation – Obasa

Indigenous language: Army deserve commendation – Obasa

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa has said that Nigerian Army should be commended for directing its personnel to learn the three major Nigerian languages: Yoruba, Igbo and Hsusa.  Obasa spoke in reaction to the order given recently to all army personnel in the country to learn the three major languages.

The speaker has been an advocate of the teaching of indigenous languages in schools and the Assembly under him recently passed a law making the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory in Lagos schools. Obasa said the new directive shows that the Nigerian Army is passionate about ensuring internal peace and unity in the country.

“Our argument had often been that security officers should operate in areas where they understand the language, cultures and traditions of the people. It would not make much of a meaning to post Hausa men to Yoruba land when they have a very scanty knowledge of the place. This was why we constantly advocated for state policing.

“We also recently resolved to have Yoruba language taught in all schools in Lagos. It is not a personal issue, there is the need to ensure that the language retains its importance in the country. Across the world, people are proud of their languages. They even teach with it in schools and solve major societal issues with it. We know English is our major language here, but we must keep indigenous ones from extinction.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman, while confirming the order, had said that it was part of the newly introduced language policy. “With introduction of the three major languages in the military, we are sure of a positive result in the fight against terrorism and other issues threatening our peace as a nation,” the speaker said.
