    • Seeks ex-President’s intervention in alleged plot to install ‘foreigner’

The royal family of Ogunmakin, a community in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State has passionately appealed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo not to abandon them at this critical time of its quest to produce the next traditional ruler amid the thickening plots by some forces to deny the family of the inalienable right to occupy the vacant stool of the ancient Ogunmakin community.

Reminding Obasanjo that they are Owu people, whose ancestors founded the agrarian community, the family led by Prince Adeyemi Ogunmakin and Prince Kazeem Ogunmakin begged the elder statesman to come to their help quickly lest an alleged stranger from Ibadan snatches the throne of their forebears from them.

The family made the appeal while addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital on Saturday.

The family affirmed that the progenitor of the community was Ogunmakin, their forefather, expressing the concern that despite the overriding evidence of the family being a ruling house and entitled to produce the next monarch after the demise of Oba James Sodiya, there were intense plans by some elements to sideline them.

The Ogunmakin family urged Obasanjo to take cognizance of the fact that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and that injustice to one is an injustice to all.

The family added that a petition had equally been sent to Governor Dapo Abiodun; the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; and the Ogun State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, over the issues

“We are using this platform to appeal to our father and former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to come to our rescue.

“Ogunmakin also has a root from Owu where Baba Obasanjo hails from, we beg you to assist us to secure our rightful stool, against a plot by some elements to impose a non-indigene as the next traditional ruler of Ogunmakin,” the family said.

“To set the record straight, and contrary to Ayinde Busari’s press release of 23/5/2024, via MouthpieceNGR, we must now declare that our progenitor’s full name was Bello Ogunmakin, not Bisiriyu Ogunmakin,” the family explained.

The family stated further that, “His first-ever child from his first wife-Ekitiba was in fact male-Busari Ogunwemimo, not Omonayajo. It was Busari Ogunwemimo Ogunmakin who begat Surakatu  Olawunmi  Ogunmakin (Baale Orile Ogunmakin 2001-2014) duly installed with certificate by Kabiyesi Osile and was the only suitably qualified incumbent  Baale Ogunmakin land, due to be elevated to Oba Ogunmakin in 2010 but was gifted to the late Oba Sodiya.

Focus more on food security, Obasanjo urges governors

Governors got a piece of advice yesterday from former President Olusegun Obasanjo – they should focus more on food security and prioritise policies that enhance people’s well-being.

Obasanjo gave the advice in Sokoto at inauguration of the 136 housing units acquired by the Sokoto State Government at N1.8 billion for allocation to low income earners.

The one-time president arrived in Sokoto on Tuesday for  a two-day visit for the inauguration of projects executed by Governor Ahmed Aliyu to mark his administration’s one year in office.

He described food security as a priority, followed by personal health and security, adding, “good feeling enhances health and other productive engagements.”

Obasanjo acknowledged the efforts of Aliyu, whom he described as a “leader running a good race in the areas of transportation, road construction, agriculture and housing projects.

“Your strong, energetic and resilient qualities in leadership have made you to get it all within the space of time of your one year.

“Putting all these in place will surely brighten your chances of seeking a future mandate without stress.”

Aliyu said the idea of coming up with numerous housing projects was to fulfill his campaign promises to deliver human-oriented projects that would improve the welfare and standards of the people in the state.

He said the government has raised committees on completing and initiating similar projects across the state.

Aliyu said that the houses were acquired from the Federal Government for residents in the state to own bases on owner-occupier basis in order to address the growing need for shelter in the state.

Obasanjo to Nigerian leaders: prioritise, focus on food security, ‘stomach infrastructure’

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasised the importance of prioritising food security, particularly the concept of “stomach infrastructure.”

He made the remarks at the unveiling of 136 housing units acquired by the Sokoto state government for N1.820 billion.

The housing units are intended for low-income earners and other citizens in need of shelter.

Obasanjo praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for his efforts in addressing various issues such as food security, transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing projects.

He commended the governor’s dedication, comparing it to the strength and resilience of a stallion horse.

“Your strong, energetic, and resilient qualities in leadership have made you get it all within the space of time of your one year.

“Putting all these in place will surely brighten your chances of seeking a second-term mandate without stress”, he expressed optimism.

The former president applauded Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar for their spirited call contributions to the development of the state as a good political mentor and the Sultan as a role model in the caliphate.

How to reduce $20b spent on food imports, by Obasanjo

Nigeria’s annual spending of $20 billion on food imports can be reduced by exploring farming opportunities in the over 80 per cent arable lands in the country, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said.

Speaking during the Africa Methodist Council of Heads of conference summit and Women’s Movement Leadership summit at Lekki in Lagos, the former President attributed the huge expenditure on food imports to the country’s inability to produce sufficient food to feed its population.

Obasanjo, who was the chairman of the conference’s public lecture with theme: Leadership in a Volatile, Uncertain and Ambiguous (VULCA) World, said Nigeria neither got enough foods for its citizens nor produced sufficient food to feed its population.

The former President decried the development, saying it worsened after the discovery of crude oil, which shifted government’s interest from agriculture to oil exploration.

He said: “We spend almost $20 billion annually to import food in a country where we still beat our chest and say 80 per cent of our arable land is not yet cultivated. The area that is cultivated is not used to maximum capacity. We need leaders who will lead us to the Promised Land.

“The discovery of oil in different parts of Nigeria was, to some extent, a misfortune for the country. Oil made Nigerians to abandon agriculture, and oil is a wasting asset, which can finish any day. But agriculture is renewable.

“We have to go back to agriculture. I believe that if we need to have anything to bring employment to our teaming population which is becoming restive, frustrated and dangerous; if we are going to curb that, it is giving them skills, empowerment and employment. If we don’t, they will soon come to attack us in our homes in daytime, and that will be a matter of time.”

Obasanjo also said there was no race in the world that has suffered like Africans through slavery, slave trade and colonialism.

“In America, some schools are teaching that slave trade did not happen and that the white and the black went to America in search of the green grass. We didn’t go there in search of green grass; we were shipped there from Africa. And if we allow them, we will be enslaved again. What form it will be, I do not know,” he said.

The ex-President said he had given himself the task of working with some people on both sides of the Atlantic to keep slave trade in history.

The conference’s keynote speaker/General Secretary of World Methodist Council, Dr. Ivan Abraham, said Africa needed quality leadership that would carry all its citizens along and protect the vulnerable.

He said Africa needed to rise together without anyone being left behind.

According to him, the litmus test for any government policy is to ascertain to what extent it protects the most vulnerable within the society.

Abraham noted that without good leadership, poverty would continue to be a challenge in Africa.

The chief host/Prelate of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, described the church as the voice of the voiceless, hence the need for the conference to gather people to examine political, socioeconomic, and religious challenges affecting the continent.
