Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Vice Chancellor of Bells University of Technology at Ota in Ogun State, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, have urged the Federal Government to include students of private universities in the soon-to-commence Student Loan Scheme.

They spoke at the inauguration of the Asiwaju Onafowokan, Coleman Wires and Cables building yesterday at Bells University’s College of Postgraduate Studies in Ota.

Ojediran said parents were struggling to keep their children enrolled in schools, whether public or private, due to the economic situation of the country.

“All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now, is to do their best.

“It is indeed an opportunity for you to run the affairs of your country and look after your people. It is an opportunity.

“It should not be me, but we; not mine, but ours; not my tomorrow, but our tomorrow; and not my generation, but all generations; including the generations coming.

“This is what sustainable development is all about. You do not eat today, and not remember the generations coming, that they too have to eat, that is all it is.”

On the developmental strides of Obaseki in the last seven and a half years, Obasanjo said: “The governor used this opportunity to brief me of what is going on in Edo State. Seeing is believing, as when you are in a place you learn more by your visit than just hearing, and that is what has just happened to me.

“I have learnt a lot, and I am better educated now about things in Edo State, recent and immediate future.”

On the secret of his good health and agility, the former President said: “The secret of good health is the grace of God. You must learn to grow and old gracefully, with the grace of God. “All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now (because it’s an opportunity for you to run the affairs of your country and look after your people) is: ‘it should not be me but we, not mine but ours, not my tomorrow but our tomorrow, not my generation but all generations including the generation coming.

Not how long, but how well, Obasanjo hails late Olubadan

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday, March 28, paid glowing tributes to the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, noting that his reign, though short, was impactful.

Obasanjo spoke when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late monarch at the Alarere residence, in Ibadan.

He was accompanied on the visit by Chief Fasawe and Arole Gbenga Adewusi among others added.

The Nation reports that Oba Balogun, who received Staff of Office as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland on 11th March 2022, joined his ancestors on 14th March, this year, just about 72 hours after the celebration of his second anniversary.

He has since been buried at his Aliiwo ancestral home on Friday, March 15.

The ex-president was received by some family members of the late monarch including two of the Oloris: Olayinka and Olufunmilayo and a few of the children; the Bobajiro of Ibadanland and a former Oyo State Head of Service, Alhaji Tajudeen Aremu.

In a statement by the personal assistant (media) to the late Olubadan, Oladele Ogunsola, former president Obasanjo described the late Oba Balogun as a personal friend, adding that the visit being paid was his duty.

Obasanjo said: “The late Olubadan was not a foreigner to me, he was my friend and it is my duty to pay this visit to his family. He carried the position very well, he was ‘Gbobaniyi’.

“Naturally, we would have loved him to be around us for much longer time, but God knows best. As it is said in Yoruba that ‘o wuni ka jeran pe lenu, oofa ona ofun o je’ that’s as much as we want to hold the meat in our mouth, the drawer from our oesophagus won’t allow us.

“As I said, God knows best. Assuming that death did not come when it came but a worse thing happened, what could have been our reaction? We thank God for him, it is no how long, but how well.”

In his terse condolence message in the register, Chief Obasanjo wrote, “Kabiyesi Balogun, sleep in your creator’s bosom.”

Responding on behalf of the family, Bobajiro of Ibadanland who is also a former Oyo State Head of Service, Alhaji Tajudeen Aremu said what the former president did during the visit was a demonstration of genuine love.

Chief Aremu recalled that Chief Obasanjo truly demonstrated true friendship by the visit which was a manifestation of the saying in Yoruba that whoever identifies with somebody in his or her absence is truly a friend of such a person.

“There’s nothing our late father can do for anybody now, he is no more in a position to offer anybody anything, either tangible or intangible, so whatever anybody does for him now is not because of receiving anything in return from him, but out of deep love and concern.

“The family appreciates Your Excellency and it is our prayer that God will preserve you more for the country in general and Yoruba in particular”, Chief Aremu added.

Welcoming him and his entourage earlier, the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade recalled that the former President was among the dignitaries that paid the late Olubadan visit before his coronation and his coming round now after his death was a clear demonstration of the love that existed between the two of them.

He prayed to the Almighty Allah to repay him for the good deeds and love being showed the family of the late Olubadan with a charge to him not to visit a one-off thing but something that should be periodical as a way of identifying with the family.

Dialogue not violence will solve conflicts in Africa – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has restated that dialogue and not any form of violence would help resolve various conflicts in Africa.

Obasanjo stated this on Monday in Abeokuta at a Youth leadership symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of The Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa” .

He said that efforts to inculcate culture of peace and security in the youth must be intensified to spur them to be at the vanguard of promoting peace rather than being used to perpetrate violence in the continent.

The programme was put together by Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was part of activities lined up for the 87th birthday of the former President coming up on Tuesday, March 5.

Obasanjo explained that instead of pushing forward the narratives of hatred, negative attitudes which brew conflicts and then violence, it was important to embrace love, tolerance and see peace as not negotiable for economic growth and prosperity.

He said that the youths must stand firmly against conflicts in any part of Africa and be agents of peace rather than being lured or used as agent of destabilisation.

“We must begin to bring up our youths in the culture of peace and security. The chances are where we have culture of love, we will have peace.

“The first thing to do is to inculcate in the youths the ingredients of peace which is love and fellowship.

“Look at the attributes that God gave us to have life of stability, life of peace, they are as I mentioned, kindness, mercy and forgiveness.

“All of these attributes are professed by God and he shared same with us to make life pleasant for us. But when we build negative attitudes, pull him down, then there will be problem.

“The youth must be at the vanguard of pursuing peace, they must be able to persuade those who believe that gun and violence is the way out of conflicts to have a rethink, the way out is conversation and dialogue.

“We have had our issues here during civil war; we killed ourselves mercilessly, destroyed our best facilities but we still came back to the roundtable to get the challenge resolved.

The Coordinator of the programme and former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, said that the essence of the symposium was to further drive home the commitment of Obasanjo.

He emphasised that Obasanjo believed that African youths had pivotal roles to play in achieving peace across the continent.

Obasanjo noted that ABUAD’s meteoric rise and global visibility within the shortest time of its existence was not a fluke but the cumulative products of Babalola’s dedication, vision, commitment, and determination.

He hailed the university’s workers for keying into the founder’s vision of establishing a 21st century institution that would teach others how ivory towers should be run and how to raise a new generation of leaders.
