  • Obaseki gets knocks for banning schools for events

Opposition parties in Edo State yesterday slammed Governor Godwin Obaseki for banning public schools and roads for social events.

They described the decision as draconian and anti-people.

The parties said the ban would make things difficult for the poor, who cannot afford the huge amount demanded by event centres.

Chairmen of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) Mr. Gabriel Oloruntoba and Roy Oribhabor said roads could be banned for social events due to inconveniences they might cause users, but not schools.

Oloruntoba said: “This is an anti-people policy because those involved in rental business will be out of job. This idea of oppressing the common man is unfair.

“I recall that the day I was sworn in as chairman, I said I would hail the governor for any good policy and would not be afraid to criticise him when he is derailing. In this case, he got it wrong. Much as we are in support of banning events on roads, but not schools, because most people cannot afford charges of event centres.

“The ban will increase people’s pains and financial stress. They are already overburdened by economic and social problems. Edo people are known for celebrating their culture by organising funeral, marriage, etc. in front of their houses, and such events spill over to streets.”

Oribhabor said the decision is harsh, urging the government to come up with policies with a human face.

Communications and Orientation Commissioner Mr. Paul Ohonbanmu said the government banned the use of such places “because of people’s behaviour and will not accept the practice in a civilised society as ours.”

He said:  “Henceforth, any violation of this decision will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws. Government agencies should enforce compliance.”

Obaseki promises implementation of AIDS law

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has promised that his administration will implement the State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA) Law of 2009.

He spoke yesterday when he received members of the state Civil Society for HIV/AIDs in Nigeria (CiSHAN), who visited him in Benin.

Obaseki said it is worthless enacting a law which won’t be implemented in full.

He mandated the Ministry of Health to work out modalities for its implementation.

The governor directed the ministry to evolve suggestions on establishment of the SACA board as well as recommendation on the constitution of the Governor’s Council on HIV/AIDS.

He hailed the association for helping to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, saying the effort reduced the prevalence of the condition.

“I encourage you despite the frustration you face; you should not relent, we want to thank you for the lives you are saving.’’

Obaseki promised his administration’s readiness to collaborate with the association, especially in eradicating stigmatisation and other challenges.

“I want us to involve the Ministry of Information for publicity purposes, so that we can work with them on propagating the methods associated with HIV/AIDS.’’

The group’s Coordinator,  Bright Oniovokukor, said the association would work with the government and other  partners to curb spread of the disease.

He hailed the government for passing the SACA Law and urged the present administration to ensure its implementation.

Oniovokukor said the establishment of EDOSACA Board and the constitution of the Governor’s Committee on AIDS, as stipulated in the law, would improve the state’s response to the challenge.

He said donor agencies were gradually abandoning the project, adding that many private institutions had not keyed into the HIV/AIDS response.

“The sufferers remain ours and we must care for them. We know that implementation of the law will close this gap.’’

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the prevalence of the virus in the state as at 2016 was 4.1 per cent and 60,000 people are accessing treatment.

  • Obaseki promises to reconstruct old Midwestern roads

Obaseki promises to reconstruct old Midwestern roads

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has promised to reconstruct old roads built when Edo was part of defunct Midwest state.

The roads, now dilapidated, linked several communities before new highways were conbuilt by the Federal Government.

Obaseki said his administration would place priority on  old roads because they connect agrarian communities as well as encourage investment in the agricultural sector.

He spoke when he received a report presented by the Technical Committee on Infrastructural Development, set up to review the state of roads when Edo was under the old Midwestern Region.

Obaseki said most agrarian communities  were disconnected from the Trunk A roads built by the Federal Government.

This, he noted, hampered agricultural activities in communities.

He said his administration would encourage investment in these communities by reconstructing the old road infrastructure linking agrarian communities and expand them when necessary.

“When the colonial masters designed these roads we inherited, they connected communities because the communities were the economic nerve centers of the Midwestern region.

“But with the construction of Trunk A roads, these communities were forcefully relocated and deprived of the huge commercial and economic activities they used to host,” he said.

    The roads are Benin-Lagos, Benin-Agbor, Benin-Akure-Sobe, Benin-Abraka, Benin-Auchi-Okene and Benin-Sapele.

  • Late passage of budget destroys economy – Obaseki

Late passage of budget destroys economy – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday condemned the late passage of the budget by the Senate, saying it destroys the economy.

Obaseki said it was unfair for a state like Edo to pass its budget in December only to wait for another six months for its implementation due to delay in the passage of the national budget.

The governor spoke in Benin City when he hosted the Clifford Ordia- led Senate Committee on Works.

He said the senators should not expect contractors executing projects to do much because the budget was passed during the rainy season.

He urged the Senate to create a special fund for construction and maintenance of some key federal roads since the water ways and railways were yet to be fully developed.

The governor said: “You need to earmark certain fund, dedicated resources for some key federal roads and keep the roads open. Our rails and water ways are not developed and such good road maintenance will affect our economic growth positively.

On the failed section of the Benin-Lokoja highway at Ekpoma,  Obaseki said he once told the Federal Comptroller of Works not to return to Benin if the contractors were not mobilized to site.

Senator Ordia told the governor they were in the state to carry out physical assessments of the Lokoja-Benin highway dualization.

  • Obaseki moves to revive literary creativity

Obaseki moves to revive literary creativity

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has taken steps to revive literary creativity.

He noted Edo was, throughout the 70s and 80s, renowned for its education and creativity with the best library set up in Nigeria, which promoted significant reading culture among people.

The governor spoke when he received members of the national executives of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on a courtesy visit.

He said his administration was putting together a committee to resuscitate the state’s library system and reading culture, adding that every Local Government headquarters would be mandated to create a room or two for a library so that people could have access to both manual and electronic texts.

According to him: “When we talk about reading culture, it is always better to catch them young.

“We are re-enacting our entire basic education system, we are moving our basic educational system into an e-platform because the technology exists.”

He explained publications would be converted to digital formats and once the books were loaded into tablets, children would be able to catch up the idea and inculcate a reading culture with a wide variety of books.

  • PDP to Obaseki: we don’t want your appointments

PDP to Obaseki: we don’t want your appointments

    •Knocks gov’s plans to privatise five-star hospital

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emphatically told Governor Godwin Obaseki its members will not accept his appointments.

The party was reacting to the calls by Obaseki on the opposition to work together with him in moving the state forward following the Supreme Court ruling which affirmed his election.

The governor however told opposition parties not to expect any appointments from his administration, adding that he would only respect the All Progressives Congress (APC), which bought him to power.

But the State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, told reporters in Benin the party would not accept any appointment because it does not believe in the vision of the governor.

“The appointment that will come from God is the one we are interested in, not the one by Godwin Obaseki.

“So Godwin Obaseki, keep your appointment; we don’t believe in whatever you have to offer,” Orbih added.

He said that in spite of the court ruling, the PDP had achieved a lot as a viable opposition and would continue to be the conscience of the people.

According to him, “The issues are very clear. We are a political party and we believe in this party. We have already achieved so much for the people of this state without a lot of people realising it.

“I want to assure you (that) we are not going to relent. We will continue the way it has been. We will continue to be the conscience of the people and advance the course of our party until victory is achieved.”

The party also knocked Obaseki over plans to privatise the new five star hospital built by Adams Oshiomhole.

The new hospital was commissioned by President Mohammadu Buhari as one of the legacy projects of Oshiomhole’s administration.

But Obaseki said the state government does not have the capacity to run the new hospital owing to the equipment purchased and the care it was meant to provide.

According to him: “If we run it the way we run our other hospitals, that thing will not be there in the next two years.

“Our plan is to look for private partner who understands how to run hospital, who has done it in other parts of the world to come to run that hospital. They will ensure they maintain it and provide the kind of care we want.”

Orbih noted that handing over the hospital to private firm would make the hospital inaccessible to majority of the people of the state.

He said it was shocking that the hospital has not been put to use about one year after it was commissioned by President Buhari.

Orbih blamed Oshiomhole for the non-functioning of the hospital, saying Obaseki’s comments confirmed that the hospital was a fraud.

  • Obaseki ‘ll live up to expectation, says Osakue

Obaseki ‘ll live up to expectation, says Osakue

Aiyevbekpen Osakue was the Coordinator of the Godwin Obaseki Campaign Organisation. In this interview, he tells Osagie Otabor that Obaseki will fulfill his promises to the electorate.

Are you having any fears about the pending Supreme Court verdict on the petition filed by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu against Governor Godwin Obaseki?

I thank God for the vindication of the APC and Godwin Obaseki. We commend the judiciary for remaining steadfast and delivering on their expected role as the arbiter. As arbitrators, they have demonstrated that they can be neutral. Everybody on both sides of the divide will not deny that the tribunal and the Appeal Court have been very neutral and have done the needful, considering all the material facts to the case. You cannot change the fact the way they are. The PDP cannot change the fact because it is clear that Mr. Obaseki won the election. Every other imputation of malpractices was deliberate to deceive the public and to try a subterfuge for a selfish purpose. Whether they go to the Supreme Court or appeal before God, the fact will speaks for itself and the APC will remain vindicated.

It has been eight months since Obaseki was sworn-in. Will you say he has lived up to expectation?

The only way to access the performance of Obaseki in the past eight months is to look back at our campaign promises to the people of Edo State. Obaseki promised to ensure that the developmental strides of Comrade Oshiomhole is sustained. He promised that the heritage of progress will be maintained. That is ongoing. He promised that things will be done differently and today everyone that is a key observer of this government will conclude that things are being done differently. There is a new governance philosophy that has been clearly defined and had also defined the actions of government. The most important achievement is that every sector of the life of Edo people has gone through thorough and seasoned analysis by experts in order to join new ideas to the novel ideas that the governor has brought to the state. This will in a short while explode Edo State to new heights.

His actions so far suggest he is not continuing where Oshiomhole stopped.

Continuity does not mean that every way and method and every system that was introduced by the past administration will be continued in the same manner because the society of dynamic. On a daily basis, new ideas evolve, on a daily basis, new ways of getting results are found out by researchers. On a daily basis, you found out that the problem that was there yesterday is not what you confront today. Every government that is worth its salt will fund new ways to solve problem. The storm water programme will not be abandoned by the state government. Governor Obaseki had a lot of input in the idea of the storm water project. It is fundamental to solving the problem of flooding in Benin City and other parts of Edo State. The storm water is planned in such a way you have the southern sector and the western sector. This government is putting template on ground, analysing where we are and looking at the best way. The project will be tackled more vigorously. Governor Obaseki and Oshiomhole are inseparable. They are on the same page on virtually every matter in this state. Obaseki is very well appreciated by the youths of our party. The youths are more excited and happier. They looked forward to a better future.

Some party members are not happy with the Obaseki especially when he said government house is not a bank.

I don’t see why anybody should be worried about the statement that the Government House is not a bank. What they should be worried about is whether Obaseki is prepared to deliver on his promises to the party and the people of the state. In delivering those promises, the party members stand to benefit substantially. The benefit that government delivers to the people is more important than any other pecuniary benefits. What he is saying is that he has gotten a program to empower the youths, to empower members of the party, to empower to the people of the state and ensure the youth take effective control of the party. The worry is that the programmes have not been role out. Obaseki is very experienced and his approach to issues are technical and technological. For every single action he takes, there is an explanation. If any decision has been taken, there will be a reason for it.

Edo Line was recently shut down at a time the governor said he will be creating jobs.

It is naive for anyone to make such a statement about Edo Line because they don’t have the facts. The truth of the matter is that Edo State Government has sustained the workers of Edo Line for doing nothing. They have been paid up to date without doing the job for which they were employed. It has come to a point when government based on facts and to act in order to get the best out of the system, it became imperative to shut down Edo Line. Edo Line stopped being profitable since 1999.It has suffered severe act of mismanagement. We found out what they left behind was about N1.5bn in debt. For a long time, they collected loan and not putting the loan to profitable use. Everyone that was properly employed by the organisation will not be dropped. The government is interested in building capacity of its citizen. Edo Line will some bounce back on a sustainable basis.

Are we to expect the conduct of local government elections soon?

The government came into office at a time of recession. It is not Obaseki’s priority to conduct local government election because it costs a lot of money. Having spent time in Oshiomhole’s administration, the governor is better informed. He has knocked local government into line and many of them are paying salaries as at when due. He is showing them what to do in order to ensure local government administration becomes viable. Once he has helped the local governments stand on their feet, maybe we can now talk about local government elections. It is needless to deploy resources to conduct an election when the same people will get there and will not know what to do. Government will not encourage more indebtedness of the local government but will help them rise above challenges.

The PDP has been accusing the government of …

PDP cannot understand anything about development. They are not primed to understand it. They ran a stunted government and was blind to the people. This government is forward looking and proactive. The government has foresight to plan not only for the moment but to plan for tomorrow. This same PDP will query the government if due process is not follow.
