    Obi mourns former principal

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has joined many other former students of Christ the King College (CKC) to mourn the death of their former Principal, Rev. Fr. Nicolas Tagbo.

In a release made available to the press, Obi who said that the likes of Fr. Tagbo are in short supply, recall how the discipline thoroughness of Fr. Tagbo contributed to what making most of those that passed through him what they are today. “Under Fr. Tagbo, transgression against indiscipline was regarded as a felon that was punished accordingly,” Obi said.

Obi who described his death as a happy one, explained that father lived a happy and fulfilled life and to grand old age and was alive for many years to share in the glory of the success of his many children.

Obi also recalled the high commendation he received from Fr. Tagbo after he single handed, against all odds, returned schools to the missionary. “Education remained his first love till he died. When our government returned school to the missionary, he called and said that was the highest gift I have given him. Each time we did anything phenomenal in school, such as when we gave buses, computers, generators, Internet connectivity, money for sports, library and laboratories to all the schools in Anambra, he would call to say, ‘my boy, you are on the right path’”, Obi said.

Ordained a priest in 1960, Fr. Tagbo was the first black principal of Christ the King College, Onitsha. He was among those that received National award(OON), on the intervention of Mr. Peter Obi and his former SSG, Mr. Oseloka Obaze.

  • Priests hail Obi on return of schools

Former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi was singled out for praise at an event meant for priests.

During the ordination of six new priests at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, the commercial capital of the state, Catholic Bishop of Kano Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. John Niyiring said handing over schools to their church owners was the most courageous thing a person in government had done in Nigeria.

He noted that since that exercise the trajectory of education changed in the state.

While thanking the the Anambra State government for the gesture, he called on others to emulate it.

In his own remarks, the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha,  Most Rev. Dr. Denis Isizor, who encouraged the newly ordained priests to strive at all times to attend to the spiritual needs of the people, agreed with Bishop Niyiring. He went on to say that many countries in the world, using Ghana where he had personal experience, are eager to know by what arrangement the partnership between Anambra government and the churches worked seamlessly for the good of the people, especially in the area of education and healthcare delivery.

Corroborating the submissions of the bishops, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu said that the continued reference to education underscored its importance in development. He recalled the gains of return of schools to the Church and how the former Governor, Mr. Peter Obi offered real support to the Churches.

“Beyond the return of schools and the grant of over N6 billion for the rehabilitation of those schools, former Governor Peter Obi also provided buses, Internet connectivity, generators, sick bays, libraries, sporting facilities, computers and learning  aids to these schools,” Obiogbolu submitted.

  • Ekwueme didn’t reprimand me, says Obi

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to avoid peddling falsehood because they are injurious to individuals, institutions and the society.

Obi gave the advice in Lagos when he addressed reporters.

The former governor said criticisms should be constructive to be rational.

Obi was reacting to the allegation that he urged the Igbo to ignore Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The former governor’s alleged comment allegedly irked former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, who accused him of anti-Igbo moves.

The encounter was said to have happened at a reception organised by Eke indigenes at Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu for their sons – the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Godfrey Onyema and the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu.

Clarifying issues, Obi said Dr Ekwueme, being a highly-respected elder statesman and a father, could offer advice or rebuke him, if need be.

But the former governor regretted that neither him nor Ekwueme spoke at the event let alone address the media.

Wondering where and when Dr Ekwueme allegedly rebuked him, Obi recalled their interaction at Nike Lake Hotel, saying: “As soon as I entered the venue, I went to greet Dr. Ekwueme. At the end of the event, I saw him and his wife to their car before they left.”

The former governor regretted the alleged altercation between him and Dr Ekwueme.

He noted that though the “misinformation” was not unusual, “this one is painful because it is disrespectful and abomination in Igbo land to ridicule such an eminent elder for cloudy political reasons. In retirement after serving his country and society, we should accord him respect and seek his wisdom and counsel to improve our lives and help to move Nigeria forward, rather than subject him to opprobrium”.

Ekwueme, Obi, Ezeife to Buhari: restructure Nigeria

Restructuring of Nigeria dominated yesterday speeches of eminent citizens at the 17th convention of the Igbo Youths Movement (IYM) in Enugu.

All the speakers, including former Vice-President, Alex Ekwueme, former governor of old Anambra State Chukwuemeka Ezeife and a former National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to embark on restructuring of Nigeria in line with the principles of true federalism.

Also at the occasion were former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana; former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, renowned author Arthur Nwankwo and Niger Delta activist and protagonist of resource control, Ms Annkio Briggs.

Speaker after speaker advised Buhari to implement the National Conference report of 2014 as a first step towards restructuring Nigeria.

The leaders, who spoke on the theme of the convention, “Still in search of true federalism”, noted that the current protests and demand for separation by various groups as well as other socio-economic crises could be reduced by half if the national confab’s report was implemented.

In Ekwueme’s view every disappointment is a blessing. His incarceration in 1984 at Kirikiri prison by the military afforded him the opportunity to reflect deeply on Nigeria’s problems, he said.

According to him, he came out with the idea of six geo-political zonal structure, which he pushed for at a national conference much later and it became a convention, and has taken care of minorities in the South and the North.

Ekwueme stated that what Nigeria negotiated for and agreed with the colonial masters before independence was a regional government where each has a constitution, annexed to the Republican constitution of 1963.

According to him, the Republican Constitution then provided 50 per cent revenue sharing formula for the regions, 30 per cent to a distributable pool, and 20 per cent for the centre.

“There is need for us to return to the basics from what we inherited from our founding fathers,” he said.

Adebanjo, who traced the origin of federalism in Nigeria to various pre-and post colonial constitutional conferences, insisted that Nigeria must be restructured to correct the humongous damage done to the nation’s constitution by the military and to stop various acts of uprising, including those of Niger Delta Avengers, MASSOB and IPOB.

Gana said the nation’s founding fathers were right by agreeing to a federal structure, which he described as the best for peace, equity and justice.

The guest speaker and former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana, said that the key solution to Nigeria’s problem was through true federalism and devolution of powers to states.

“True fiscal federalism is the only form of association that will allow peace and stability in the country and each region should be allowed to manage its resources the way they want it,” Gana said.

He noted that the formula for allocating revenue made the Federal Government to get richer while the states operated like beggars.

“States should be allowed to manage its resources to enable them govern their people the way they want and allocate some percentage to the Federal Government.

“Government should not be far from the people and the federating unit should be made strong to meet the needs of the people,” he said.

Gana recommended continuous dialogue and the implementation of the resolutions of national confab by the government as the only means the recent agitation and other national demand could be handled.

Briggs, who received the award of “Amazon of Truth” by IYM, said true and fiscal federalism must be truthful and justifiable. She believed in resource control, she said, adding  that as much as she does not think that Nigeria must break, she believes that if the nation continues on the current path, disintegration would be inevitable.

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi supported restructuring of the country on the basis of fiscal federalism, but he warned while that was being addressed, there was need to urgently address the high cost of governance. Any governor who says he can’t pay workers’ salaries, Obi said,  should give way for other persons with better ideas.

Ezeife who also received award of “Igbo Peoples General” stated that the 2014 national conference report recommended additional 18 states to make for a 48 state-structure to address some inequalities created by the military.

Pupils of Mater Amabilis Secondary School in Adani, Enugu State, celebrated mass with joy following the rehabilitation of their hostel by former Anambra State governor Peter Obi. The hostel was razed by fire last year.

Speaking at the event, Fr. Fredreick Omekoha, who presided over the thanksgiving mass, said he was thrilled by Obi’s philanthropic gesture of touching the lives of rural people.

The Principal of the School, Rev. Sr. Jane Onuorah thanked God for the gift of Mr Obi.

Describing his love for education as legendary, she said what he did as governor lifted Anambra to a frontline state in education.

“During his tenure, he rehabilitated schools massively, provided boreholes, generators, Internet facilities, sports equipment, and upgraded laboratories, libraries, among others. Even as a private person, he has continued the good work”, she said.

Obi who inaugurated the building, and the school’s new library, promised to assist them to equip the library as well as set up a computer class.

Speaking on what drives him, Obi said he believed that people should give back to the society.

“I always watch with dismay the amount of money people spend in pursuit of vanity, when they would have channelled such to what will be beneficial to humanity,” he said.

Former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi has lifted the spirits of pupils of Crowther Memorial College, Umuikwu Anam, in Anambra West Local Government Area of the state. On a visit to the school, Mr Obi presented the authorities with N1m cheque, a gesture which excited the pupils and the school authorities.

The former governor did more than that. He also provided mentorship and leadership, asking the pupils to pray not just for themselves and their teachers, but also the state and the country.

Presenting the cheque to the school after inspecting their facilities, including a computer classroom and library, Obi  said that the visit was in fulfillment of the promise to the proprietor of the school, Bishop Benry Okeke of the Anglican Diocese of Mbamili, that he would remain part of the progress of the school.

Obi commended the bishop for the positive ways through which he touches the lives of the people in that rural community and called on men of goodwill to assist him in any way possible.

“The last time I visited the school as governor, the building was just started. I am delighted that the school is completed. I urge Nigerians to assist you because you are indeed working for God through serving His people.

The Bishop who described Mr. Obi as a lover of the Diocese, called on other leaders to emulate his love for education and the manner he tirelessly work for the advancement of humanity.

  • Obi: birthday is opportunity to share love

Obi: birthday is opportunity to share love

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said a birthday should not be a time to “show off” but to think about the celebrator’s life and ask how faithful he has been to himself and God.

The former governor also said a birthday provides the time to share love among people, “especially the poor among us”.

Obi spoke yesterday when he and the Anglican Bishop of Amichi, Rev. Ephrian Ikeakor, visited Holy Child Convent School at Amichi, Master Vessels School at Osumenyi and the Diocesan Hospital, also at Amichi, as part of his birthday celebration.

The former governor donated N2 million: N1 million  to  Holy Child Convent and another N1 million to the Diocesan Hospital  for further infrastructural upgrade.

He promised to return to Master Vessels School.

Obi urged the pupils of both schools to always face their education and submit themselves to positive dispositions that would make them useful to themselves, Anambra State, Nigeria and humanity.

Describing Bishop Ikeakor as among men of God who practise what they preached, the former governor said his choice of celebrating with the pupils reminded him of his policy of requesting those who would always present him with luxury material gifts to rather support him with essentials, such as computers, buses and generators to donate to schools.

Bishop Ikeakor thanked God for His mercies upon his people.

    Obi urges Igbo cohesion

Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has said that the Igbo have no option but to work together for their own good and that of the country at large. Obi said this at the 16th anniversary of the movement of Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) at the International Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.

Obi who was honoured as the Grand Patron of the group for his commitment and achievements,  said that one of the ways for the Igbo to get their due in Nigeria was by their sending their best to the National Assembly to represent  them.

He said, “Let me make it clear that after series of consultations following the pressure on me to contest for the Senate, I have accepted to do so. I am, in fact, in the race. I have studied the National Assembly as it is now and discovered that many States are represented by past Governors, who are holding important positions, I am convinced that if I go there, I will join other illustrious Igbo sons and work for Anambra and the South-East. I will work very well with past Governors, my colleagues, who are there. When other states are sending their Messi to play for them, we have to send  our own Ronaldo to match them.”

Obi who later commissioned the Clinic Complex built by ASPMDA in commemoration of their anniversary, urged Ndigbo to stand firm wherever they are, but urged them to always fulfill their civic responsibilities at all times.

In his speech, the President of ASPMDA, Dr. DC Offorkansi said that his administration would continue to work for the good of traders. He thanked Mr. Peter Obi for identifying with them at all times and for showing what good governance is for others to emulate.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Tony Offorma called for Mr. Peter Obi to be named the Ambassador of Igbo Nation as a man who had been tested and who  proved his onions in all ramifications.

Assistance should go to the needy, says Obi

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has urged the wealthy to serve God with their riches by serving humanity.

Obi spoke yesterday at the presentation of N1 million cheque to Progressive Primary School at Awba-Ofemili.

The former governor said he was moved to visit the school after the cleric in charge, Rev. Coleman Onuegbu, told him about the condition of the school during the last Christmas mass.

He pledged to always reach out to his friends and institutions, as well as deny himself unnecessary luxuries to assist the needy.

The school’s head teacher, Mr. John Ozuah, prayed God to continue to bless the former governor for his exemplary leadership in the state.

The head teacher recalled that Obi renovated three classrooms in the school when he was governor.

The school’s Manager, Rev. Coleman Onuegbu, also thanked Obi for always assisting the poor.

  • APGA denies endorsing Obi for Senate

APGA denies endorsing Obi for Senate

The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has denied  endorsing former Governor Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its candidate for Anambra Central Senatorial District.

APGA, through its Integrity Group, described the report as the figment of imagination of its writer and the height of political naivety.

A statement yesterday in Awka, the state capital, by Great Martin-Kalu said the meeting by the Chief Maxi Okwu-led faction, which reportedly endorsed Obi as the party’s senatorial candidate after a town hall in Awka, was null and void because the former governor did not have the party’s support.

The statement said: “APGA’s Integrity Group dismisses Shadrack Anakwue’s purported APGA ‘faction’ endorsement of former Governor Peter Obi of the PDP for senatorial bid as the figment of his fertile imagination and the height of political naivety.

“It is obvious that there is no faction in APGA, following Chief Victor Umeh’s victory in the party’s leadership dispute at the Supreme Court on January 15, 2016. The issue of a ‘faction’ endorsing Obi against the party’s authentic candidate, Chief Victor Umeh, is mere grandstanding and outlandish.

“While Anakwue is free to support the political ambition of any Nigerian, it is reprehensible and outrageous for him to use “APGA faction” to mislead unweary members of the public for his personal aggrandizement. More so,when effort is being made by the APGA National Leader, Governor Willie Obiano to reconcile aggrieved members of the party Nationwide.

“It is clear that Peter Obi is not contesting Anambra Central Senatorial re-run poll as the Supreme Court has repeatedly declared in recent judgements on those qualified to contest. Obi is playing to the gallery, a mundane tactic to delay Victor Umeh’s victory as the forerunner in the senatorial election.”
