  • ‘And the women endorse Obiano’

The issue of endorsement continued during the week as the Women for National Rebirth unequivocally endorse the candidacy of Chief Willie Obiano of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In an official statement, signed by Mrs. Barong Moffat, the group’s National Coordinator, and Mrs. Esther Dalang, the National Publicity Secretary, WNR said, “We have perused Willie Obiano’s 10-point agenda, 4-Cs programme of Continue, Complete, Commission and Commencement of new projects vis-à-vis Governor Peter Obi’s gender friendly progressive governance and have no doubt that Obiano will exceed Obi’s achievements if he emerges governor in the forthcoming poll. The era of godfatherism, hooliganism, fascism and kidnapping of a sitting governor is over. It is a new dawn, Nigerian women are set to participate in politics and national leadership to achieve national rebirth that will put Nigeria on the path of rectitude and growth ahead of 2014 centenary celebration.”

The group also took a stand in other national issues: “Women for National Rebirth demands for a Sovereign National Conference in place of President Goodluck Jonathan’s proposed national dialogue which resolutions will be ratified by the National Assembly. It is obvious that the National Assembly is not gender friendly and cannot be trusted to ratify women related issues including 40% affirmative action, girl-child education policy, opposition to child marriage, child labour, implementation of Child Rights Acts, violence against women, women trafficking, among others, the group will canvass for in a sovereign national conference.

“The recent obnoxious consideration of child marriage by the Senate is a classical expression of male chauvinism and machismo. It is unfair, unjust and unacceptable in our collective quest at building a decent egalitarian society.

Women for National Rebirth warns politicians against heating up the polity ahead of 2015 presidential election. President Jonathan should not be distracted from his constitutional responsibilities by unpatriotic elements masquerading as democrats. National interest should override partisan politics. Accordingly, we support Jonathan’s re-election bid with the understanding that he will choose a woman as a running mate. We call on Nigerian women to wake up and be counted in the long march to national rebirth.

“Women for National Rebirth frowns at the elongated ASUU strike and urge the Federal Government and the academic Union to shift grounds with a view to resolving the quagmire in the interest of the suffering students. As mothers we feel the pains of the students as well as the lecturers and understand the Federal Government’s financial constraint; and call for a truce.

“We commend efforts by security agents in the war against Boko Haram and other insurgencies in the country. We urge the Federal Government to adequately equip all security agencies to enable them control crime to the barest minimum.

Women for National Rebirth is alarmed by the high rate of unemployment in the country which has led our youths to various crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, and prostitution. Governments at all levels should take appropriate actions to employ these youths to avoid disgruntled politicians using them to rig elections and foment trouble in the country. A stitch in time saves nine.

We enjoin Federal and States Ministry of Women Affairs and Local Government Councils to work out monthly welfare materials to motherless babies homes across the country. The need to maintain these babies cannot be overemphasized. It is a service to God and humanity.

“There cannot be a national rebirth without a spiritual rebirth. We urge Nigerians to be prayerful, turn from evil and do the will of God always. We are optimistic that Nigeria shall be great. The election of Nigeria into United Nations Security Council seat is a pointer that the nation will overcome its challenges and honoured in the comity of nations. Together we shall build a strong, virile, and decent democratic society.”

    Monarch endorses Obiano

The traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom, Anambra State,  Igwe A C Iweka III, has endorsed Chief Willie Obiano, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The traditional ruler said at this year’s Ofala festival at the AfoAdike Stadium, Obosi, that APGA has picked the right candidate, who is capable of expanding the vision of Governor Peter Obi.

According to James Eze, Head of Media and Communication of Willie Obiano Campaign Organisation, the traditional ruler spoke while receiving the APGA team in his palace. He also pledged the support of his cabinet and the town in the proposed election.

According to the monarch, although many people want the next governor to come from Anambra North Senatorial Zone, Obiano stands out as the best candidate.

Earlier in his remarks, the APGA candidate, Obiano had assured Igwe Iweka III that he will ensure that the great work done by Governor Obi would be sustained.

According to him, it would be unfortunate, if the tremendous progress the state had recorded under Obi is allowed to go down the drain because of lack of continuity in vision and commitment.

  • Obiano to set up special schools

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Dr Willie Obiano yesterday announced that his administration will establish three special schools in the three senatorial zones for the handicapped.

Obiano, who spoke yesterday, said: “he would introduce a rigorous recruitment exercise and revised remuneration for teachers to attract the best resources in Nigeria.”

He assured that he would create an annual one billion naira youth empowerment grant scheme targeted at creating 100,000 jobs yearly, and establish 21 sports centres across all local governments.

Obiano said his administration would pursue four cardinal programmes and commence new projects after completing those started by Governor Peter Obi.

He said his government would donate 500 patrol vehicles , communication and other surveillance equipment to security agencies.

“ I will set up a free health care policy for children under the age of 10 and underprivileged pregnant women and the elderly above 60. I will develop state-of-the-art medical parks to provide excellent specialist medical diagnostic services.”

•Obi, Umeh describe APGA’s candidate as best

All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA’s) governorship candidate in the November 16 election in Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, yesterday launched his campaign.

The event was held at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where Governor Peter Obi and the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, described the APGA’s standard- bearer as the best.

Absent at the rally was one of the aspirants to the APGA’s ticket and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

Also absent were former minister of Information, Prof Dora Akuniyili and wife of the late Ikemba Nnewi Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu.

One of the aspirants to the APGA’s ticket and a member representing Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Uche Ekwunife, hailed the leadership style of Obi and urged the APGA candidate to emulate him.

She said with the crowd at the event, it would be difficult for APGA to lose the governorship seat.

The highlight of the rally was the redemption of the N10 million campaign promise made in Aguleri at the weekend to APGA by the party’s chieftain, Dr. Boniface Emengini.

Emengini also donated a new Toyota Hiace and Toyota V-8 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) to the APGA candidate’s campaign organisation.

He said he pledged the money during the fund raising dinner at Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government at the weekend.

Obiano thanked Emengini and assured him that he would never forget those who assisted APGA during the campaign.

“This is the time for us to forget our differences and come to the reality of time. APGA is the only party that represents the interest of Ndigbo,” Obiano said.

A minute’s silence was observed by the party faithful for the late APGA leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwun Ojukwu, whose son Emeka (Jnr) attended the rally with former Minister of Health Dr. Tim Menakaya.

The National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh, who listed the achievements of Governor Obi, said the party had delivered in Anambra State. He described the state as the headquarters of Ndigbo.

Former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ifeatu Obi Okoye, defected to APGA with over 20 members of his former party. Another defector, Peter Nwosu, led Labour Party supporters to APGA.

Chief Anayo Obiakor left the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) with his members to APGA.

  • Obiano as the symbol of Ojukwu’s legacy

There are many reasons why observers of the intense political activities leading to the November 16, 2013 gubernatorial election in Anambra State believe that Chief Willie Obiano will win the race. Some of the reasons are easy to see. But some are intricately embedded in the intriguing world of symbols.

What is easy for all to see is that the APGA standard bearer is the most outstanding of the crop of candidates jostling for Governor Peter Obi’s job.

For anyone with a modicum of discernment, it is difficult to miss the first symbolism of Obiano’s involvement in the Anambra gubernatorial race

Interestingly, beyond the symbolism of a break from the belief that politics is reserved for the thugs and the blood-thirsty amongst us lies another symbolism – the symbolism of Ojukwu’s place in Igbo memory and its political leadership. It is a known fact that no political leader in the last half century has embedded himself in Igbo memory quite as completely as the late Ikemba of Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Interestingly, with his passage and burial last year, it became even clearer that Ojukwu was more than an Igbo hero. Ndigbo know that Ojukwu’s twilight years were spent envisioning a future for them and constructing a roadmap to Igbo renaissance within the larger Nigerian family.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was a major part of Ojukwu’s grand plan to give Ndigbo a metaphorical political roof to shield them from the torrential rainfall of Nigerian maladministration.  Obi has also validated Ojukwu’s confidence with a 5-Stars performance. So, it is easy to see that among the many issues that will swing voters’ sympathies in the coming election is the symbolism of Ojukwu’s legacy and his ideals. An APGA loss at the polls in November, barely one year after Ojukwu’s heroic burial, will cast Ndi Anambra in the mould of a people without memory.

Another symbolism is also the symbolism of the party APGA as the only standing political structure that Ndigbo can lay claim to in Nigeria as their own. There is this sense of ownership that APGA represents to them.

As it were, Anambra is the only surviving turf for APGA and the only reason it still exists. Governor Peter Obi has proved that a thoroughly prepared leader can leave a resounding legacy even as a member of a minority party. Willie Obiano’s emergence as the APGA candidate has re-assured Ndi Anambra that there will be continuity in competent leadership and vision after Obi. When all these symbolisms are considered, it is hard not to see that Chief Willie Obiano is simply waiting to take over from Governor Peter Obi as the next governor of Anambra State.

  • APGA insists on Obiano for Anambra election

The Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra, Chief Mike Kwentoh, said the party would not feature two candidates in the November 16 governorship election in the state.

Kwentoh said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Friday.

He said that presenting two candidates would confuse the electorate and affect the party’s chance of retaining the leadership of the state.

The chairman regretted the activities of Chief Maxi Okwu’s faction whom he said participated in the reconciliation by Governor Peter Obi in the full glare of the public.

He described those who wanted to divide the party after the reconciliation as dissidents.

“We do not welcome double candidature, it is alien to us in APGA and as I am talking to you now, we have just one candidate in the person of Willy Obiano for the governorship election.

“Those trying to divide our party are dissidents and I call their actions rascality of the highest order,”he said.

NAN recalls that a faction of APGA led by Chief Okwu on Monday picked Dr. Chike Obidigbo as its gubernatorial candidate.

Chief Victor Umeh’s faction had earlier elected Chief Willie Obiano as the APGA candidate for the election in a primary conducted in Awka on August 26.

  • Obiano, Nwoye, Ngige to battle for Anambra governor

Obiano, Nwoye, Ngige to battle for Anambra governor

The stage is set for the epic battle for the Anambra State governorship seat, with the emergence of candidates of the three major political parties.

Yesterday, Chief Willie Obiano emerged winner in the primaries conducted by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)  in Awka, the state capital.

APGA is the ruling party in the state with Governor Peter Obi elected on its ticket.

Obiano was a Deputy Director of Fidelity Bank PLC. He hails from Anambra East council in the Anambra North Senatorial Zone of the state. APGA had stated that it zoned the governorship position to Anambra north.

Obiano got 817 votes out of the possible 1,076 according to the Chairman of the electoral Panel, Chief Martin Agbaso. House of Representatives member Mrs Uche Ekwunife got 150 votes to place second.

Chief Patrick Obianwu also from Anambra north, stepped down for Obiano, saying his move would keep the dream of the zone producing the next governor alive.

The remaining six aspirants and their votes are: Chief Paul Odenigbo (49 votes), Emeka Nwogbo (22 votes) John Nwosu (18 votes) Mr. John Emeka whose withdrawal was turned down for his absence, scored one vote. Sixteen votes were voided.

Also yesterday, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Bamanga Tukur announced Tony Nwoye as its governorship candidate.

Nwoye emerged on Saturday from the primaries conducted by the national secretariat -recognised Chief Ken Emekayi Group while Senator Andy Uba was elected as the candidate by the factional congress conducted by court and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-recognised chairman of the State PDP, Chief Ejike Oguebego.

Although the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress is slated for Monday, but following a consensus arrangement announced last week, Senator Chris Ngige has been picked as the candidate of the APC.

The Monday APC congress will only serve as the coronation of his candidacy.

Obi told his party members not to relent in their support as APGA was determined to retain the state.

‘’For the past 11 years, I’ve being a member of APGA and I have always told people to believe in APGA.

Obi said “The forthcoming election is a serious one for APGA because we are going into the election with Philosophy of existentialism. For us to exist we must win that election but we must be together. In the next few days we will bring everybody together. We cannot win a medal if we are not together. This state is APGA state and we remain APGA state.

Obi assured that the party members that all party members would work together to achieve victory.

  • Obiano: Seeking power for public good

Obiano: Seeking power for public good

In this piece, NGWU NWEZE writes on the governorship ambition of the prominent banker and businessman, Chief Willie Obiano, and what it portends for Anambra State.

As the political rain-clouds gather in Anambra State, ahead of the November governorship elections, the already heated race recently witnessed a rupture, with the grand entry of Chief WilliemObiano, the colourful banker and oil industry chieftain, whose emergence has totally altered the political equation in the state.

The reason is not fare fetched. ChiefObiano carries a spark that lights up any arena he enters like a burst of fireflies in a dark, moonless night. The Aguleri High Chief who is also famously known as Akpokuedike Aguleri comes almost fully made with a rare combination of solid intellect and a common touch that makes many leaders wince with envy. His sartorial style and regal elegance easily stand him out in any crowd. His infectious humour and kindred spirit strikes instant connectivity with anyone that comes his way regardless of age or class. Obiano is nuanced, passionate and full of zest. In a nutshell, the Aguleri high chief has managed to squeeze into one personality, as much complexity as simplicity.

True, no one is born a king; but Chief Obiano’s leadership inclinations and abilities seem rather inherent. He radiates magnetic warmth that does not only draw people to him, but makes them willing to go the extra mile for him. It was perhaps this rare quality more than anything else that made his Aguleri people to bestow on him the title of Akpokuedike, which can be loosely translated as “the buzz of the warrior.” Obiano has the natural proclivity of an astute administrator and a man with an infinite business savvy.

Until recently, Chief Obiano was the number two man at Fidelity Bank Plc, as the Executive Director in charge of Business Banking after a glittering banking career that saw him rise through the ranks. Before his retirement, he headed virtually every important segment of the bank including corporate banking, non-bank financial institutions, treasury, foreign operations, oil and gas financing, telecommunications, aviation and several other businesses where he showed tremendous leadership skills and a rare people’s touch. Before he joined Fidelity Bank, Obiano had had an auspicious beginning at First Bank Nigeria and Texaco Nigeria Plc where he distinguished himself as the Chief Internal Auditor for years, driving change and initiating programmes that earned him the accolade of the top management of the global conglomerate.

At Fidelity, what mostly stood Chief Obiano out was his rare human touch; a deep connection with the people which resonated throughout the bank and a large reservoir of knowledge of the subtleties of banking and a keen sense of the present and how it connects to the future, which most bankers who have fallen by the way side never seemed to have. Obiano knew banking well enough to know that the banker’s reputation is like a house of straws; one bad move and all the years of struggle would go up in a plume of smoke. But Obiano left Fidelity on a high. Not one shred of scandal trailed his years as a top-flight banker. He was well loved by the ordinary staff and respected by the management and the board. At the bank’s annual dinners and social events, Akpokue Aguleri, as he was fondly called by friends and colleagues always stood out. Being a man of style, his remarkable haircut and aristocratic fashion taste always marked him out in the crowd. Smiling comes easy to Chief Obiano as does his hearty gentleman laughter that draws instant fellow feelings from the people around him.

AkpokudikeAguleri’s entry into the muddy waters of Anambraguber race did not come to many people who know him as a surprise. Close friends and interested observers always knew that his extra-ordinary people skill and leadership acumen would find him out. A close friend once told this writer that ChiefObiano had confided in him that the only way he would contest a political office was if his people invited him to represent them. It is evident therefore, that Obiano’s momentous entry into the race under the APGA platform was not spurred by any vaunting ambition, but one that is borne out of a desire to serve his people of Anambra North, who have never had a shot at the state house in Awka. Indeed there has been a legitimate clamour for fairness and equity in the political governance of Anambra State which has tended to preclude the people of Anambra North from the office of the number one citizen of the state since Anambra came into existence. This glaring injustice has grown in its lingering gravity in the acclaimed tradition of all injustices that do not lend themselves to peaceful burial. It is perhaps in realization of the grotesque obviousness of this imbalance in power that the ebullient governor Peter Obi of Anambra State is rumoured to have declared his intention to deploy his enormous goodwill with the people and ensure that a candidate from the neglected Anambra North succeeds him in office. That way, the genuine cries and supplications of the people would be pointedly assuaged.

Against this backdrop therefore, Willie Obiano’s candidacy is a bold answer to the clamor among his people for their best and brightest sons and daughters to file out for the highest office in the state. But people who should know are fully aware that Obiano is not just in the race to multiply the options of the electorates. AkpokuedikeAguleri never goes into any venture without adequate risk assessment and strenuous preparation. Indeed Obiano is fully prepared for the battle. What most friends and associates always marvel at is his astonishing brilliance for someone with his exceptional social skills.

Obiano holds a Second Class Upper Division in Accounting from the University of Lagos and an MBA in Marketing from the same school. He is a class member of the Harvard Business School and Stanford University, both in the USA. He is also both Fellow and patron of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). In the course of his career, Obiano attended numerous courses including Credit and Trade Services at Citi Bank, New York, Treasury and Money Market at Northwest London, Emerging Markets at FIM Bank, Malta and Managing Integration Process at Houston Texas, USA in 2006.

Obiano is a bridge builder of sorts. His extensive contacts are almost infinite; spreading from an eclectic number of serving and retired top military brass, para-military and royal fathers to professionals like doctors, lawyers, fellow bankers and brilliant architects and engineers, among others. Obiano has immense goodwill among donor agencies and portfolio investors in the USA and Europe which he put to enormous use in the service of Fidelity Bank when the bank had successive public offers to rustle up fresh funds. It is believed that these same contacts will be useful when he assumes office as governor. Not surprising, Chief Obiano has been a recipient of many awards and honours in recognition of his eternal warmth, public spirit, candour and generous contributions to society. In May 2012, Obiano received the honour of the 1stUSAfrica’s Distinguished Banker of the Year award in Houston, Texas, USA. In addition to being honoured by the people of Aguleri as the Akpokuedike of Aguleri Kingdom, Chief Obiano also holds the revered title of Otunba Atayase of Ilemeso-Ekiti in Ekiti State. This later recognition from Oba David Adegboyega Oyewunmi (Fasemi II) of Ilemeso-Ekiti underscores his bridge-building capacity and a natural inclination to bond with people from diverse cultures. It is partly for this reason and everything else that the Board of Governors and Trustees of Wisconsin International University, USA, also conferred on him the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership, honoriscausa, late last year. It was a richly deserved honour for someone who has made his mark as a thoroughbred professional and as a man of means.

AkpokueAguleri is also deeply connected with the clergy and the church. Obiano is a devout Catholic whose commitment to the church is deep. It is perhaps ironic that a man with his high social skills and a profound love for tradition is also deeply involved with the church. It is all part of the high art of personality code-mixing which Obiano has perfected in his simple but complex personality.

Obiano’s involvement with the church began rather early. Following his early education in mission schools, Chief Obiano has never really strayed too far from the church. His keen interest in the church of Jesus Christ has led him into accepting different roles in the service of God including but not restricted to being the patron of Catholic Women Association, Missionary of St. Paul’s Society, Catholic Women’s Organisation, Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria and the Grand Pillar of St. Gerald Catholic Church, among others.
