Oyegun: New APC leadership to emerge before June

•Says party not involved in compilation of board members

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun last night distanced the party from the list of board appointments recently released by the government. He said the party was not involved in the final process leading to the release of the list of appointees.

Odigie-Oyegun who spoke at a dinner for journalists at his residence said even though the party was involved in the initial compilation of the list, it was not involved in the process of vetting the list before it was made public, pointing out that the party would have insisted that a proper check be carried out before the list is made public.

The APC chairman also gave an indication that a new leadership for the party will emerge before the end of June 2018, with the process beginning any moment from now with the National Caucus and National Executive Committee meeting, culminating in the national convention.

Oyegun said the NEC which is expected to hold either before the end of January or early February will fix the date for the elective national convention which is expected to produce a new leadership for the party.

He said the processes leading to the convention is expected to start with ward congresses, the local government and state congresses before the national convention, saying “during the convention, members will be expected to either elect a new leadership of endorse the ones currently in office”.

Speaking on the performance of the Buhari government, Oyegun said that the economy of the country is recovering well, saying “I can say to you emphatically that in the critical areas of development, the policy of the party has remained resolute. We still have a long way to go no doubt about that, but the commitment to change the state of things is what matters.”

He said that the APC government has been working hard to improve on the situation in the power sector adding that a lot have been done to raise generation and has kick-started substantial growth in power generation, while a lot has been to improve on the transmission facilities.

The APC chairman said that at the inception, the party asked for the nomination of 50 people from each state which it submitted to the Presidential committee, adding that between then and now, a lot of things happened and the party was not involved in the last stage.

He said while the issue of board appointments has caused quite a lot of controversies, it is obvious that the not in order in the compilation of the final list, saying,

“We have followed the issue of board appointments and I think that issue has raised a lot controversy already.  The only thing I want to add is that it is pretty obvious that the party was not involved in the final stages of the compilation of that list.

“Yes, we sent at the initial stage and I am talking of a period of two years ago. We demanded for every state to make 50 nominations which were sent to the committee in charge of the list for the purpose.

“People have changed parties, people have died, we have three new governors that were not there when the list was compiled. Therefore it was clear that there was obvious need for us to look at the final outcome of the exercise.

“But we are not fortunate to participate on that final stage otherwise it is quite clear such would not have occurred. It is my sincere hope that we will be fully involved in the review that has to now taken place and any other exercise moving forward from this date,” he noted.

The ruling party equally pointed out that considering the fact that this year will be build up to the 2019 general election, the party will hit the ground running, stressing: “I will resume on Monday and we are going to hit the ground running. We all know that this year is obviously going to an active year for elections.”

The dead are Senator Francis Okpozo, who passed on at 81 in 2016. • I have survived several coup as APC chairman says Oyegun

I have survived several coup as APC chairman says Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has said that challenged all those who want him out as Chairman of the ruling were after him because of his avowed loyalty to constituted authority saying he has survived several attempts at removing him because of his integrity.

The APC chairman also said that left for the nation’s elites, President Muhammadu Buhari would never become President, adding that President Buhari’s Presidency was made possible by the common people in the country.

Speaking in Benin when he was conferred with the Benin National honoured by the Benin National Congress, Chief Oyegun said he has gone through several political trials because of his unflinching loyalty to constituted authority at all times, saying this posture has severally frustrated contending interests within the Party

While appreciating the Benin National Congress for the honoured, Oyegun said “the timing of the investiture was significant given that I had just survived another attempted coup which died with a whimper. For a Bini group, my own people to say ‘oga we want to honour you’, I thought finally yes I deserved this honour. I thank you for doing this to me. This is one of my proudest moments.

“I grew up in an environment of strong family ties, where bringing disgrace, dishonour to the family is the worst thing you can possibly do, because your own family will be the first to disown you. So all my life, this is the circumstance that has conditioned me.

“One, I do nothing that will not make me sleep soundly at night. I do nothing that I will be afraid to see as a headline in any of the national dailies. Yes, I have been through several trials, and I have overcome them all. Why have I done so? It is because at the end of the day, however detailed, however forensic, your examination, you will not find that John Odigie-Oyegun have done anything dishonourable.

“And so with all the hue and cry, at the end of the day when we sit down, people will say, yes you want John Odigie-Oyegun out, fine. Tell us what he has done? The whole situation fizzles out, because the only thing you can punish him for is loyalty. And we Edo people are loyal. If we believe in something, we make sacrifices to ensure that those ends are upheld and met.”

Speaking on President Buhari, Chief Oyegun said the President can only be compared eminent Nigerians like late INEC Secretary, Justice Ephraim Akpata, late INEC Chairman, Dr. Abel Goubadia; lawyer/activist, Gani Fayehinmi; Afrobeat pioneer and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti who were not popular for simply throwing money around, but for their inspiration to others.

He said: “The example of these men is noticed, it inspires other people. So by their conduct, they are probably doing a lot more good than those who just handover cash. There are so many ways to the top. People like Justice Ephraim Akpata, Abel Goubadia, Gani Fawehinmi, Fela Anikulapo Kuti were popular, but they controlled nothing. The same attribute is what our president has. He controls nothing. He does not have mansions, but the whole nation has accepted him because of integrity.

“Let me make one thing clear, President Buhari was not elected by the elites, I hope you know that. If he depended on the elite, Buhari may not be president today. And if he depended on the elite, with the way they tried to do our foreign exchange and the rest of it, Buhari will not be president tomorrow.

“But the ordinary people of this country look up to him as the symbol of the kind of persons, leadership and the kind of country that they want Nigeria to become. He is a symbol, a lighthouse, a guide. He doesn’t have to be good at everything, but he has that attribute which the ordinary Nigerian is telling us is what they need.

“Yes, I accept there is hunger in the land, yes, I accept that the economy is in relatively bad shape. If I tell you now that what we inherited were far worse and you hear some of the details, I won’t be surprised if people go out and ask for stricter measures on those who have brought this country to its knees.

“As at the time we took over, there wasn’t a single kobo anywhere. As if that was not enough, the price of crude collapsed. But the good news is that for the first time in its history, this country is finally building an economic base that is based on the sweat of Nigerians.

“What that mean is that we will never again suffer from the kind of humiliation we have had resulting from the collapse of the one item that sustained this nation which is crude oil. Today agriculture is blossoming, young people are taking up farming as a business. Today we are almost independent in the production of rice.

“Today we are almost self-sufficient in a lot of the grains that we depend on in this nation. Today we are opening up solid mineral mines all over the country. Things have started to solidify. The economy has started to grow. It is not a switch, it is something that will take time.

“But once we are there, this nation will never experience the type of recession that we had in the past… Change is not bridges. Change is not electricity. Change is not roads. Change is my perception as to what is right or what is wrong or what needs to be done and being faithful in getting it done.

“For as long as we Nigerians have the wrong type of morality, ethics, not all the roads in this world will get us out of the economic morass we find ourselves. So change also means a change of attitude, morality, ethics, knowledge of what is right and what is wrong. A system that rewards competence, productivity rather than a system that adulates wealth for the sake of the fact that somebody has money. We must change this aspect of our lives.

“Change takes time. Changing how we perceive things, how we think and respond to issues takes time and consistency of application, meaning that we cannot go back to the bad old days. When I joined the service as an economic planner, the World Bank put Nigeria ahead of Brazil, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan.

“Today we are importing second-hand Brazilian planes. So what went wrong with us? Finally we have a President who is insisting painfully on bringing Nigeria back to the path of rectitude, progress and enable Nigeria attain its destiny. It is not by accident that we are the largest black nation in the world. Until President Buhari we were a laughing stock. Today we are gaining respectability. So it is important that we don’t lose momentum.

“I insisted that some of our brothers from the other parties should be here because it is important that we realise the enormity of the challenges that face this nation. It is important that we put crude politics aside and work together constructively to build a new Nigeria. Otherwise, we are still living in the past. And it is my hope that we will get together and separate policy from petty politics. And assist the President in creating a new nation that we all will be proud about.

Present at the reception include the Senate President represented by the Senate Deputy Whip, Senator Francis Alimikhena; the Edo state governor, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Osaro Idah; the Minister of Communications, Abdul-raheem Adebayo Shittu; former Edo state deputy governors; retired Justice of the Supreme Couurt, Justice Samson Uwaifo; current and former members of the Edo State House of Assembly; members of the APC National and State Working Committees; lawyer/activist, Festus Keyamo SAN; the academia; music icon, Sir Victor Uwaifo; former Minister of women affairs, Josephene Anenih; former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Parry Osayande among others.

Why I survived removal plot, by Odigie-Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said yesterday he survived a plot to remove him because he did not do any dishonourable thing.

He said he was targeted because of his ‘loyalty’.

Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke in Benin City when he was honoured as ‘Ogbe Eni’ (Elephant Killer) by the Benin National Congress (BNC), said God vindicated him.

He hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for building the country on an economy based on the sweat of Nigerians.

The APC national chairman said Buhari was elected by ordinary Nigerians, who believed in him.

He said: “We will never again suffer from the collapse of crude. Today agriculture is booming, today we are self-sufficient in the production of agro products. President Buhari has concluded plans to deliver 3,500 megawatts of electricity to us. We took over a collapsed country, but today things have started to improve, our economy is growing and Nigeria will never experience that type of recession we witnessed.

”Change mantra is not electricity, is not water, but changing our morals, doing what is right, changing our attitude, a system that rewards competence and productivity. So we must change those bad aspects of our lives and we will enjoy the Nigeria we all crave for and the Nigeria President Buhari intends to put in place for all.

“So, all my life this is the circumstance that has conditioned me. One, I do nothing that will not make me have a sound sleep; I do nothing that I will be afraid to see in the headline of any national newspaper. Yes, I have been put to trials and I have overcome them. Why have I done so, because at the end of the day, under forensic, your examination, you will tell that John Odigie-Oyegun has not done anything dishonourable.

“President Buhari wants to bring Nigeria back to the path of progress, a modern Nigeria. It is important we do not lose the present momentum. We should assist the President in creating a new nation.”

The President of BNC, Mr. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo, said the resolve to honour Odigie-Oyegun was to thank him for re-asserting the irreplaceable norm of the average Benin man and woman, which is courage in the expression of truth and exemplary standards.

    Odigie-Oyegun greets Secondus, PDP officers

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John E. K. Odigie-Oyegun has congratulated National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus on his election at the PDP’s National Convention.

He also greeted other newly-elected PDP national officials.

Odigie-Oyegun, in a statement, said: “It is my hope that the newly-elected PDP National Chairman will use his experience garnered over the years to ensure that the PDP assumes its role as a responsible opposition Party in the country.

“Our party wholeheartedly welcome opposition because we believe that democracy cannot thrive without a vibrant but responsible opposition that puts the nation first.  This will often challenge you to balance partisan interests with overall national considerations.

“I assure the PDP National Chairman of my willingness to engage him robustly in an atmosphere devoid of acrimony and rancour. I believe that working together we can both elevate the language and temper of politics in our country, thereby providing the enabling environment for democracy to thrive in our country.”

  • We’re not threatened by any mega party, says Odigie-Oyegun

We’re not threatened by any mega party, says Odigie-Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has said the party is not threatened about the formation of a “mega party”.
Odigie-Oyegun said the APC was focused on its mission made difficult by the recession.
The APC chairman said those behind the formation of the mega-party should be encouraged.
He absolved some party leaders of being behind the formation of a new party.
According to him, “We don’t feel threatened at all. No mega party will survive the APC. I don’t know where the name mega party suddenly came from.
“We will in fact encourage a mega party, because with the gradual collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) we want a party that can make us sit upright in terms of service delivery.
“A party that will challenge us and make democracy real. We are not threatened at all. We are focused on our mission made difficult by the economic situation.
“We are reforming this country, reforming it ethically, morally and economically by building a fresh economic base, which will no longer depend on an extractive industry which does not involve the people.
“Now we are pushing agriculture. We are pushing extractive minerals. We are pushing power generation and distribution because that will also energise the small and medium scale industry. S
“We want an economy in which most Nigerians are participants, it is no longer oil which is highly technologically based.
“So it is a different reality we are trying to build and establish. It involves sacrifices, hard work but what is necessary today is that we are focused.
“What is real today is that the Federal Government is passionate about seeing this thing to a logical conclusion.
“This nation must change and the change is so fundamental that there is no question at all that a lot of people are going through temporary hardship.
“But the situation is such that tomorrow, everybody will be glad that we pursued this line of development, despite the problems we are facing,” he said.

Odigie-Oyegun: it’s time to heal wound

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday it would heal the wound created by the primary that produced its candidate that won Saturday’s Ondo State governorship election.

In a statement in Abuja, National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said: “With the 2016 Ondo State governorship gone, the task before the party leadership is uniting the party and healing wounds.”

After the primaries, some of the aspirants kicked against the outcome. One of them, Chief Olusola Oke, defected to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and ran on its platform. He came third in the poll.

Oyegun said the victory was a result of the belief the people had in the party and the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He congratulated Governor-elect Rotimi Akeredolu, and Deputy Governor elect  Agboola Ajayi on their victory.

While thanking the electorate for voting APC, Oyegun expressed gratitude to the people of Ondo State for their impressive turnout and peaceful conduct during the election.

He praised Buhari and other party leaders for their invaluable support towards winning the election. He called for calm and appealed to the opposition parties and their candidates to accept defeat in good faith.

He said: “The APC thanks the Ondo electorate for voting for the party in the keenly-contested election. The Ondo electorate have voted for the candidate with a proven track record of performance and who will bring about the kind focused leadership and multi-faceted development which the state deserves. The party assures that we will deliver on this expectation.

“Also, the outcome of the Ondo State governorship election powerfully demonstrates the confidence and trust by our people in the overall leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC-led administration. The party and the President hold sacred this trust.”

Odigie-Oyegun said to take power from an incumbent is not easy, noting that for the APC to win dedication and hardwork are required from its members.

The chairman spoke at Akeredolu’s campaign launch   in Akure, the state capital, which was attended by prominent APC chieftains.

They include Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo, represented by  Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal; Senate President Bukola Saraki, represented by Senator Isiaka Adeleke; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Yusuf Lasun;  Governors Simon Lalong (Plateau); Kashim Shettima (Borno); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Aminu Tambuwal  (Sokoto) and Muhammed Abubakar (Bauchi).

Oyegun explained how important the state is to the Federal Government, adding that the state must join mainstream politics.

Amosun called for unity among Southwest APC leaders.

Akeredolu boasted that the APC would not miss the opportunity of joining mainstream politics.

He noted that as long as APC is ruling in Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, the party must take over Ondo State.

“We are going to create more local governments and ensure our people at the grassroots enjoy dividends of democracy.”

  • Odigie-Oyegun running APC like ministry, says Timi Frank

Odigie-Oyegun running APC like ministry, says Timi Frank

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Publicity Secretary Comrade Timi Frank yesterday accused the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, of running its affairs like a ministry.

He said any attempt to suspend him from the party would have adverse consequences.

Frank accused some members of the APC leadership as well as some members of its National Working Committee of being afraid to speak out even when they allegedly knew that things were not working well within the fold.

Reacting to the setting up of a disciplinary committee to investigate him, Frank said the Odigie-Oyegun seems to have forgotten that he was no longer presiding over a ministry as permanent secretary, who can hire and fire.

Describing the committee as a Kangaroo panel, Frank said suspending him from the party might turn out to be a wasteful venture as it might turn him into the biggest opposition of the party.

He said the party should be careful not to fall into the same trap the African National Congress (ANC) fell into in South Africa, when it suspended one of its leaders, Julius Malema.

He said Malema was fighting impunity within the party.

Pray for quick recovery of the economy- APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to Nigerians to pray for the quick recovery of the nation’s economy and support government efforts at pulling the country out of the present economic hardship.
In a Sallah message to Muslims, signed by the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the party said Muslim faithfuls and all Nigerians should use the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir celebration to show love and promote harmonious and peaceful co-existence with one another irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliations.
“Muslim faithful and indeed all Nigerians are enjoined to use the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to pray for the peace, development and prosperity of the country.
“Indeed, Nigeria is today passing through challenging times in its socio-economic life, the Party calls on Nigerians to pray and support the administration as it works assiduously to pull the country out of the present hardships and restore the country on the path growth in all facets.
“Happily, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration is already employing all legitimate and innovative means to restore the country’s battered economy back to health in the quickest possible time,” Oyegun stated.
He called on Nigerians to support the recently launched National Re-orientation Campaign “Change Begins With Me”, saying “In a bold move to repair our value system that has been badly eroded over the years, on September 8, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the laudable National Re-orientation Campaign “Change Begins With Me’’.
The Party appealed to all Nigerians to be part of this campaign which will institutionalise the best practice and time-honoured values of honesty, hard work, patriotism, abhorrence of corruption, accountability and integrity in our everyday life.

  • Edo: There is no choice apart from Obaseki -Odigie-Oyegun

Edo: There is no choice apart from Obaseki -Odigie-Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun in this interview with journalists in Benin City, declared that the governorship candidate of his party in the September 10 governorship election in Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, will defeat whoever becomes the candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election. He said one of the PDP candidates; Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu was part of those who ran the state down for eight years during the administration of Governor Lucky Igbinedion. He also spoke on the crisis in the Ondo APC and other national issues, reports Simon Ebegbulem, Benin City

THE Edo State governorship election is less than two weeks away, how optimistic are you that your party will win?

Our campaign has been very good, there was a period of drama but all that is behind us and the arguments are very clear irrespective of whatever individual issues there must be and there have been. The issue is simple, we have had the APC in government for seven years plus, before that, we had PDP in government in Edo State for 10 years and the little I have been around, you can hardly see anybody who can point to any single substantial development in the 10 years of PDP compared with the almost eight years of APC under Oshiomhole and that in-fact decides the issue. When you ask people, what is your preference, do you want the good times to continue or do you want to revert to the bad old days, the issue becomes very clear and then you get a resounding let the good days continue and that is where the debate rests and the result has been very good. Yes, there was a bit of time when there were all sorts of discordant tunes as a result of group interests, personal interests but all that have been sorted out now. I think we are roaring down to a very substantial victory, no doubt at all.

But people see the PDP candidate as a politician who can upset your candidate, Obaseki?

Again we are back to the same odious comparison for most of the ten years Ize-Iyamu was at the heart of the mis-governance of this state. For a total period of eight, out of the ten years of non performance, at a time also when funds from the excess crude account were being disbursed, there wasn’t a single and I stand to be challenged in those eight years, one single item of solid development in Edo State in those eight years. He was one of the most powerful people in that administration. Now that times are hard, is that the kind of person anybody would want to bring back to manage the affairs of this state? The answer is clearly no. Meanwhile, you have a Godwin Obaseki who has been at the heart of the management of the economy of this state throughout this hard time and everybody attests to that that he was at the heart of the economic management of the state, the result is that out of the 36 states of the country, over 22 are unable to pay salaries and Edo State is not one of them. Out of the 36 states of this nation, Edo State is one of those that are still continuing with development projects, Edo State has remained one of the fundamental ones that have tremendous development in the field of infrastructure and he was at the head, so what kind of man do we need to lead the state through this hard times; the person of-course is Obaseki who was very successful in the private sector and then came to Edo State to help out and have distinguished himself by making Edo State one of the very few states that is keeping its obligation and at the same time continue to work in developing the economy. So, we are lucky that we have an Obaseki available for us in the state and my appeal has been clear, there is no choice at all apart from Obaseki. Ize-Iyamu everybody will tell you was even as influential as Igbinedion in that administration. They ran the state economy down, sold our industries to themselves, handed the treasury of this state to few leaders and in fact crippled the entire asset of the state. So is that the man you want for Edo people, no way. We are aware they want to come back through the back door. Our people are happy today because even the poor in Edo State has been given the sense of belonging; the rich, yes they will cry because they don’t want to pay taxes and they are using that to deceive the poor masses who has nothing to do with taxation. Everybody has seen what the tax money has done in the state and we want that to continue and Obaseki remains the answer, not Ize-Iyamu or any other person from PDP.

But there is this fear among APC members that the national economic hardship may affect your party?

Again, if you stretch it down, it is the same argument. One thing that pleases me today is that in Nigeria, the ordinary voter is more perceptive than we think he is. Yes, the APC at the national level have been in office for one year plus but everybody knows that the problems we have today could not have been created in one day. We have come to fix the nation, to fix the problems, otherwise as a people, as a nation, we would have been going through a struggle for existence and a great challenge would have been confronting this nation. These were issues and challenges that were inflicted on this country by years of or a decade and a half of misgovernance at the national level. Unfortunately, as if that was not enough, we also took over at a time when the crude market collapsed from a $100 to sometimes $140 to a barrel to a time when sometimes we were managing to make $40 at some stage it was less than $30 per barrel; that is the reality and the people recognise this. It does not stop the fact that they are aching, it does not stop the fact that they in pains, that they are hungry, it does not stop the fact that they are hungry but they know these are not the creation of the APC and that what the APC under Buhari is set to do is to ensure that the fundamental problem with the country; a mono-culture economy is solved once and for all. That this nation does not ever have to depend on either one crop one mineral or one source of major sustenance; that we have to go through this pain is unfortunate. It is like saying a woman giving birth; there are pains, but the joy is going to come after delivery. We are going through these hard times now so to speak in the maternity but the joy will come. We depended solely on oil and for so many years that we had the right of the centre PDP government. You members of the media have to be of help to the nation, you need to make the nation understand that the problem we are going though today were cumulative, neglect in governance over years when we had excess crude account yet there wasn’t a single investment to develop new sources. Whether in agriculture, whether in solid minerals, whether even in petro-chemicals so that we can supply ourselves the full diversity of petroleum products, whether it is aviation fuel, whether it is the LPO and the rest of it or whether it is the chemical that emanates from the oil industry; yet we had excess crude account running into multiples of billions which we kept on sharing until nothing was left by the PDP administration. They owe this nation a very tremendous apology. Nothing in agriculture, nothing in others except just pumping oil and exporting; that was the nation that was bequeathed to the APC. The determination of the APC is to ensure that this will never happen again and that from now on, a solid base must be created for this economy so that when in few years time we will be talking about growth, we will talk about growth that is solid, that is well based that will never again result in the kind of situation we have today. The light is there at the end of the tunnel but we have to pass through the tunnel; the people must know that this is not an APC problem but we have come to solve the problem.

On the fear of thuggery and INEC’s preparation

There will not be thugs, there will not be anything like that, don’t forget that before our primaries, people were talking about thugs, about many other things people were fearful but these days, the political services are no longer under political control, so they will make sure everything is under control. We are going to have a complete free, fair, violence-free election. I expect same thing from INEC now that INEC has been removed from the shackles of influence. It is because this time we now have a government that will not tell INEC declare the result for us, let the other person do whatever he wants to do and go to court. Now this administration is not that type. INEC do your job, follow the law, follow due process, decide according to what the rules say, a Buhari administration will not say declare for APC, no; there is no such interference anymore and I believe that is why we are seeing inconclusive elections. Buhari does not interfere in the workings of the Commission at all.

On the tension in Ondo APC

The party is not really boiling; I have to call them to Abuja just to tell them the difference between endorsement and imposition. Basically, anybody can endorse just as it is anywhere and how you make that endorsement, you tell the people, you give the person support to move on. That is endorsement and people do it but that imposition is if the party itself now decides that it is a particular candidate that must be, no, the party will not do that, it will provide a level playing field for every one of them because all the aspirants are equally respected members of the family, so we had to get that difference clarified and cleared out so that you don’t think because an important member of the family has declared support for one of them, it becomes the position of the party, no. That is not the case and they understood the situation, so we are prepared to go ahead with a transparent and free primary in Ondo state.

On the request for emergency powers by the president

No not this President, the reality is that in spite of his military background, he is more democratic than a lot of us who never got near the military. He is a strictly due process person, strictly rule of law person. Like when you asked why INEC is declaring elections inconclusive, he will not take his phone and call INEC to declare for APC and let them go to court, he will ask you what does the law say, do it according to the prescription of the constitution or whatever relevant law there is so I have no fear about that at all. If anything needs a quick fix and he needs the powers to do it, that is how he will do it. Look at the cases of corruption, a lot of us have been asking for a quick fix process to fight the battle against the corrupt elements but he insists on the rule of law.

On his happiest and saddest moments

Basically the job of a national chairman is to reconcile all the interests because there are so many interests in every party and you have to make sure that at all times, everybody must have a bit of the action and ensure that no one person becomes so dominant and will now feel he or she owns the party and of course, at every stage, you have to give policy direction so that everybody can subscribe to it; so that is a continuing challenge. The way we operate: we don’t settle our issues in the pages of newspapers; while the talkative ones are talking, we are busy getting to the knitty gritty and settling the issues not in the fashion of the old PDP that will say public issues are private family affairs, no, not that fashion. Where there are blames to be given, we do.

    On his life at 77

Basically, I do not do anything that I will not want to see in your headlines the next day, so I sleep very well; I sleep very soundly. If they say there are a group of policemen outside, I say tell them to come in because it doesn’t ever occur to me that they may be after me because there is actually nothing for them to be after. I don’t fear about thugs because I don’t go into deals and I don’t take short cuts that could create mortal enemies for myself; if somebody calls me his enemy, it is either because he doesn’t like my face or he doesn’t have integrity; so I have no worries and that in truth is the only way to live. Obey your conscience, know the difference between right and wrong and try to keep yourself on the right track; you will live long, you will live healthy. I can drive myself anywhere without a single fear that somebody will be after me.

On his life as a political activist and now APC national chairman

Well, finally we are building what the pro-democracy fought for, that is that the nation will be under the control of the left to the centre party where the welfare of the people is the prime concern of government; they have no other business except to manage our common patrimony to utmost benefit of the common people. I bought into the struggle only because it suddenly dawned on me that the military was the major problem of this country; it doesn’t mean that the politicians are perfect, it doesn’t mean that the system is perfect, it does mean that politicians must now be allowed to make mistakes and then learn from it, correct it such that we continue to correct our democracy in stages and that is what brought me to the pro-democracy group and that is what is still influencing my attitude and actions.
