•Promises to address Senate matter differently

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday hailed House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dograra on the resolution of the crisis in the lower chamber, noting that the settlement would heal the wounds of the party and re-unite  it as a family.

He said : “ I want to commend the Speaker and his for their sense of patriotism. It is my hope and expectation that the wounds will now be totally healed that the APC family will now now reunite fully as one.”

Speaking with reporters in a telephone conversation, he said the crisis that rocked the Senate was different from that of the House owing to the emergence of an opposition member as the Deputy Senate President.

He added that the party would address the issue  in a different manner.

Oyegun was reacting emergence of Femi Gbajabiamila as the House Leader of the lower chamber.

The House Leaders yesterday  paid a surprise visit to the party’s National Secretariat .

His words: “ I have already offered our regrets. This is part of growing, we are new to government and we are democratic and above all, progressive movement.

“We are in the process of welding all the various tendencies into one and today we have score one major victory and I can assure the country that the party has began the process of healing all the wounds and becoming one strong force. We are moving from being a movement into a one strong political party that will back the President for the good of the entire country.”

On the crisis in the Senate, Oyegun said : “ Senate is a different level and different situation. It is totally different if only we have sore thumb in the form of a PDP Deputy Senate President. So I think it is totally different and the approach and the way we are going to handle the situation will be totally different.  But at the end of the day even the Senate issue will be sorted out too.”

Odigie-Oyegun: no ministerial nominee failed corruption test

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has debunked claims that some ministerial nominees failed corruption test conducted by security agencies.

Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke to reporters in Benin City, the Edo State capital, noted that the ministers to be appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari would be a mixture of politicians and technocrats.

He said the actions of the APC-led government under Buhari were deliberate and cautious.

This, he explained, was because the APC came with a different manifesto and would need passionate individuals who understand what is required to be done.

Odigie-Oyegun criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (APC) for alleging that the APC was clamping down on its members.

He said the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was a public officer.

His words: “The government is not slow. It is cautious and deliberate. It is good we go with deliberate steps and make a few mistakes as possible in the appointments that will need to come. That process is nearing its end.

“Activities people thought were slow are taking place. Some aspects of our promises are already underway. Implementations of some of the party’s promises are underway.”

“There was need, given that this is our first experience in governance, to be cautious. There was need, because of the totally different nature of our manifestos and social welfare programmes we promised to the people, that those he wants to bring to execute these programmes are totally different; that they understand, passionate and have ideas about what is required to be done.

“We don’t have time for the PDP yet. We are busy now to put our government on the ground and start expanding to the yearnings of the people. PDP has not put itself together yet. They are no source of concern to anybody. Dasuki was a public officer. He was not a PDP member.”

  • Yakassai denies attacking Buhari, Odigie-Oyegun

    Yakassai denies attacking Buhari, Odigie-Oyegun

Elder statesman and Second Republic politician Alhaji Tanko Yakassai has refuted allegations that he blasted President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, over their handling of the crisis in the National Assembly.

Speaking with our reporter on telephone from Kano, the elder statesman said he has no reason whatsoever to blast them and that as someone who does not belong to any political party that he tries to offer advice most of the time on burning national issues.

He said: “I never did anything of that nature. I only advised them to handle the crisis in the National Assembly with care. I considered it necessary to offer the advice because neither of them has requisite legislative experience. I was speaking based on my experience working with the National Assembly during the Second Republic, when I was Special Adviser to the then President Shehu Shagari on National Assembly matters.

“I have no reason whatsoever to blast them; while I’m not very close to Buhari, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is my personal friend and we have tremendous respect for one another. So, I have nothing against them, to warrant blasting them, as the publications insinuated. I don’t belong to any political party, so I speak my mind when it comes to national issues. In fact, in most cases, I offer advice.”

  • Odigie-Oyegun: ‘I’m not keen to be SGF’

Odigie-Oyegun: ‘I’m not keen to be SGF’

President Muhammadu Buhari is rigorously scrutinising his would-be ministers hence the delay in announcing his team, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chair John Odigie-Oyegun, said yesterday.

Odigie-Oyegun also dispelled speculations that he is gunning for the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) along with some top members of his party.

“On this issue of SGF, I will respond to you just in case, because I don’t want to offend anybody, but I will say this quite definitely. I have not in anyway, in capital letters and underlined, solicited for any position other than the national chairmanship of APC. I think I’m clear enough, isn’t it? And nobody has approached me on that or say he is considering me for that position or another.”

Oyegun said the party was interested in the ability of the people the President will appoint to bring about ideas that will help achieve his set objectives and deliver on what he wants.

The APC Chairman said the President is open to picking people from all walks of life as ministers especially if those people subscribe passionately to his agenda to move the country forward, whether they are members of the party or not.

He said: “There is absolutely no dispute between the party and the president. We agreed that we shall use all manner of people: politicians, technocrats, all manner of people, even if not politicians, who can deliver and who subscribe passionately to the agenda of the president, to move this country forward, irrespective of where the people come from; irrespective of whether the person is a card-carrying members of the party.

“What is important is the qualification of the person and the ability of the person to deliver on the ideas of Mr. President. What we are interested in is the ability of the people to bring up the ideas that will help Mr. President to achieve the set objectives and the ability to deliver on what the President wants.

“Secondly, this is an executive function and the President has the right to consult as widely as possible. This means he might pick people within the party and people outside the party. It is a prerogative the President should exercise and we cannot question that. We are quite happy about the way he is proceeding.

“We have a very capable president. He is capable as ever. The President is a very careful man. He wants to be sure the kind of people he will appoint are people who are passionate about the country.

“What is really important is the speed of the delivery of his policies. You can see that things are already improving. You can see in the electricity front, the supply of petroleum, etc. They are not connected. What the president is doing is to conduct a very thorough check on the background of the people he will appoint”

On speculations that the ambition of some party leaders was holding back the President, Oyegun said “No. I don’t think that will hold him back at all. Like he said, he said he belongs to everybody and he belongs to nobody. They should just be patient. He does not want to make avoidable mistakes.

“What is important is to see whether on a daily basis, your life is improving. Everything that can be done in these few days are being done and the effect is being felt already

However, the APC chieftain said Nigeria was passing through difficult times, but urged them to be tough and utilise the specialised knowledge gained from schooling in such a unique institution to proffer solutions to her problems.

He said: “Let me just put a caveat. We as a people, as a nation, are going through very difficult times. The economy of this nation is near a state of collapse. The treasury of this nation is very near exhausted. These are hard times. And when the times are hard, the tough gets going. You are going to join us in proffering solution to the new direction, the new trajectory on which this nation is going to embark from May 29, 2015.”

Odigie-Oyegun praised the university for giving women a chance to excel as he noted that the president of the university, Dr. Margee Ensign, the commencement speaker, Mrs. Vicky Colbett, the valedictorian, Hephzber Obiorah, and the Class of 2015 Speaker, Marvelous Imabeh, were all women.

In his speech, the chairman of the AUN Board of Trustees, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun, praised the founder of the university, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for investing in the institution, saying that despite the fees paid by the students, the former vice president still contributes about 65 per cent of the funds used to run the university.

In her speech, the AUN President described the recent election as a revolution. She urged the graduands to plug into the opportunities that the new government would provide.

She said: “The recent elections have opened that window of hope for all of you, for all of us. In fact, the peaceful transfer of power in Nigeria is nothing less than a revolution. It is a revolution of hope, and promise in a continent, most important country and economy.

“I am sure all of you know the Founder of our university, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, played a crucial role again in the opening up of Nigerian democracy, a central role in helping to establish the party which triumphed in the presidential election, and effective opposition party in bringing hope and promise and prosperity to Nigeria. Please join me in thanking him. That window of hope has opened wide for you, class of 2015. So, now is the time to create a new Nigeria, a new world, a free world. “You have to love what you do. I will give you the secret of success: passion. You know why? Because passion drives you,” she said.

The university graduated 114 undergraduates from the schools of Arts and Sciences, Business and Entrepreneurship; and Information Technology & Computing. There were also 26 graduands from the postgraduate school who graduated with Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Technology, Information Technology, and Master of Technology, Telecommunications.

Odigie-Oyegun to PDP: be a formidable opposition

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be a formidable opposition by keeping the incoming government on its toes.

Speaking when he received a delegation of former governors led by former Anambra State Governor Chief Jim Nwobodo, Odigie-Oyegun said one of the major problems of the PDP was that they tried to destroy the opposition.

He said it was the desire of the APC to see a formidable opposition from the PDP, saying: “We want the PDP to keep us on our toe so that we don’t make the same mistake they made.”

Odigie-Oyegun said a nation moving from one government to another and from one party to another peacefully is a major success.

He noted that the just-concluded elections were quite unique not because President Jonathan conceded defeat, but because he did what nobody believed could be done.

He added that a lot of terrible things could have happened after the election, “but Jonathan was inspired by God to do what Nigerians thought will not happen”.

He expressed happiness that the former governors considered it necessary to visit him as their colleague.

Nwobodo congratulated the APC for emerging victorious at the elections, describing the process as historic.

He said Nigerians voted for Gen. Buhari because of his antecedents.

Former governors on the entourage include Second Republic governor of old  Kaduna State Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, former Ekiti State governor Otunba Niyi Adebayo, former Anambra State Governor Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju and former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo.

Others are former Yobe State Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim, former Plateau State Governor Fidelis Tapgun, former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and former Kaduna State Governor Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi.

Oyegun to PDP: Keep us on our toes

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun, has tasked the Peoples a Democratic Party (PDP) to present a formidable opposition to the party and to keep them on their toes for the next four years.

Speaking when he received a delegation of former governors led by former Anambra State governor, Chief Jim Nwobodo, Oyegun said one of the major problems of the PDP was the fact they tried to destroy the opposition and make them very weak.

He said the APC desires a formidable opposition from the PDP, saying, “we want the PDP to keep us on our toes so that we don’t make the same mistake they made.”

Oyegun said that a nation moving from one government to another and from one party to another peacefully is a major success , pointing out that the just concluded elections were quite unique  not because President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat, but because he did what nobody believe could be done.

He added that terrible things could have happened after the elections, “but Jonathan was inspired by God to do what Nigerians thought will not happen.”

“By conceding defeat, Jonathan deserves a place in the nation’s history,” he added.

Speaking earlier, Nwobodo congratulated the APC for emerging victorious at the elections, saying the feat was historic.

  • APC to scrutinise Jonathan’s notes with experts, says Odigie-Oyegun

APC to scrutinise Jonathan’s notes with experts, says Odigie-Oyegun

All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday said if necessary, the party may seek experts’ help on some issues in the handover note from President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also said President-elect  Muhammadu Buhari will in the next few days name a transition committee which will work with a similar government team headed by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

He said the May 28 handover date will not in any way create a vacuum before the inauguration of the President.

Chiekf Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke with our correspondent last night, said: “We are aware that the transition committee members of the Federal Government are putting papers and records together.

“We will also raise a transition committee to crosscheck whatever papers or records they are handing over to us. In our own case, we need a lot more consultations and be sure that the right calibre of people are there.

“We will study the handover note and where we need experts’ help, we will seek to make sure that all issues are put in proper perspective for the new government.

“If there are grey areas which experts will have to put us through, we will not hesitate to seek their help.”

Asked when the party will raise its own transition committee, Odigie-Oyegun added: “It is the president-elect that will name the members. He will do so in the next few days.”

He said the party was indifferent to the May handover date because it will not create any vacuum.

Odigie-Oyegun said: “On the May 28 handover date, I am not aware of any consultation with us by the presidency. I do not know whether or not it was an issue discussed by both the President and the President-elect. I may have to find out.

“As far as we are concerned, we are getting an extra day and it will give us an opportunity to prepare more for the task ahead. So long as our candidate’s tenure is not shortchanged by a day, it might not be an issue.

“I think May 28 will just be for the formality of papers, the actual swearing in/ inauguration will still be on May 29.

“I do not think that there will be a vacuum because the President will still be in charge till May 29 until the inauguration is done.”

Odigie-Oyegun said the Presidency had written the party to nominate members into the Inauguration Committee.

“I know they have set up Inauguration Committee, we will send our list to them soon.”

  • Odigie-Oyegun: Jonathan plunging Nigeria into crises

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of instigating constitutional, religious and ethnic crises in a manner never witnessed since the nation’s independence.

Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke when he received a group of Ijaw youths under the auspices of Izon-Ibe Global Policy Network (IGPN) at the party’s national secretariat, said the Jonathan administration’s attitude was threatening the country’s corporate existence.

He lamented that because of the president’s ambition, the country had been divided in a way never experienced before.

The party’s national chairman said: “What is most worrisome is that we not only think that there has been no phenomenon development, but for some funny reasons, the whole country is being plunged into unnecessary crisis, constitutional and otherwise, which is in very real terms threatening the nation’s existence.

“In all the history of this country, even before the civil war, the people of the Southsouth have been noted as those who kept the country going through thick and thin and through the period of the civil war.

“Today, as we seat, we are not sure what will happen tomorrow. We are not sure whether the election of March 28 will hold; the country is divided so seriously in a way it has never been – along religious and ethnic lines, along the poor and rich, corruption, insecurity; all to the extreme. So, when I come across young people like you, who are professionals, I am always very impressed because the future belongs to people like you. With people like you, there is definitely hope for the Nigerian nation.”

Expressing happiness about the decision of the youth to associate with the APC, Odigie-Oyegun said: “It is not easy to find particularly young men of Ijaw extraction ready to stick out their neck and say their own brother has failed them, their own son has failed them and that what is important is who is best placed to address the challenges and the ills of our nation.

“Even outside Ijaw areas, the South generally, there are very few people who have that courage. We all seems to be trapped in the old antiquated mentality that once somebody is from us, whether he is right or wrong does not matter.

“I am glad that with people like you, we have proven that we are getting out of that mentality of my brother is right or wrong. I must say that the President is someone who has been blessed by God in every way possible.

“He became deputy governor riding on the goodwill of the governor; he became governor because your principal fell out with the federal system and so, they set him up and properly dealt with him.

“You were asked to become vice president. You pleaded to be allowed to remain in your state to continue to be governor, but you were dragged screaming to become vice president.

“Again, nature took its course. God called your principal home and without lifting a finger, the whole of Nigeria rose up  in your defence and you became President and you served the almost two years that was left. On your own, and with the whole country routing for you, you became President.

“A man in the position will look up in the sky and say God, use me. Whatever you want to use me for, I am ready and available. At the end of the term he is serving now, he would have served six solid years as the No. 1 citizen of this nation.

“Anybody in that position would knee down and say God, you have been kind to me and would want to write his name boldly in the annals of history, such that people will look back generations from now and be proud.

“Those of us from the Southsouth will also be proud that when our brother was there, when our son was there, this name recorded phenomenal growth and we in the Southsouth will say, but for him.

“We would not have known what a railway station is or what a train looks like; but for him. We would not have known what a true expressway is. But for him, we would not have known what it is to have electricity round the clock. But for him, we would not have had the industries that are now taking care of our children as they come out of schools.

“For a man, who is so blessed, he would like to leave his name in the annals of history having been there for six years; two years short of the normal eight years, which is two terms of a normal president. So, it is a matter of concern.

“I am also from the Southsouth, the Niger Delta, even though peripheral. But you are proper Ijaw from the various states of the Niger Delta. I particularly commend your courage for looking at these last six years and conclude that we can do better. Whether he is our son or not, we must have the courage to say no, ‘you have not done well; somebody else can do it better’.

“So, I want to say that we appreciate the courage of what you have done; we appreciate the spirit of what you have done and to say to you that it is stuffs like you that nations are made of, that nations are built on, and that you should continue the good work that you have started and I want to assure you that at the proper time, you will be appreciated and acknowledged.”

The group’s spokesman, Ayubalayefa Dennis, said its members have mobilised over five million youths from the Niger Delta region to carry on the gospel of change and ensure that General Muhammadu Buhari is voted into office.

He lamented that the amnesty programme put in place for youths of the Niger Delta was badly managed by President Jonathan, alleging that he had politicised the programme.

  • Five PDP governors will join APC – Oyegun

Five PDP governors will join APC – Oyegun

Five governors on the platform of People’s Democratic Party, especially those from the northern part of the country will soon dump the party for All Progressive Congress, Chief Odigie Oyegun, the National Chairman of the APC said in Benin City, Edo State, on Wednesday.

Oyegun said he has held meetings with the said governors and he (Oyegun) has directed them to start the formalities for defection in their various states.

“Let me reveal to you people today that very very soon, you will hear of an earthquake that will consume PDP in this country. As I’m talking to you people now, I have held meetings with some governors that want to join the APC from the PDP. Let me not release the cat out of the bag. But let me assure you that few hours to the presidential and National Assembly elections, the PDP canoe will sink.

“You can see that our President and his party PDP have engaged in one character assassination or the other, yet we are focusing on our campaigns of issues and not names calling.

“The hand writing is so clear , February 14th , 2015 is love day , that date is a special day for our party , as from that day Jonathan will start to park his belongings away from Aso Rock .

“The elections cannot be postponed and they cannot rig it either. Just go there that day, vote and protect it. It is evidently clear that PDP and Jonathan are running scared.

“It is laughable that an NSA, Col. Dasuki, that cannot advice the President on how to tackle insurgency in Nigeria, is calling for elections’ postponement.”
