    Odigie-Oyegun: PDP is scared

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said yesterday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was scared of the likely result of the February 14, 2015 elections, stressing that President Goodluck Jonathan and his party’s leaders were, therefore, resorting to blackmail.

Odigie-Oyegun, who spoke at a luncheon he organised for APC leaders in Edo South, said the handwriting was clear that President  Jonathan and PDP would lose the presidential election.

He said in 16 years of PDP government, Jonathan’s six-year rule brought untold hardship and divisions to Nigerians.

The APC National Chairman urged Nigerians to take their destiny in their hands by using their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to chase PDP government out of power on February 14.

Odigie-Oyegun said his emergence as the country’s biggest opposition party’s chairman was divine to bring the much-needed change.

His words: “President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP are scared of the February 14 presidential election. It is obvious to them that they will definitely lose this election.

“Jonathan is using all means through unknown people to scuffle the elections. But I can assure you that elections will hold and we will defeat them.

“I’m shocked by the kind of crowd I see in our various campaign grounds. For now, we have secured over 20 million votes. In Bayelsa and Kaduna states, we will defeat Jonathan and Sambo.”

Also speaking, a party national leader and former National Chairman of CPC, Chief Tony Momoh, said all that is left of PDP was carcass, saying: “All the good hands in this country are in APC.”

He pleaded with the people of Edo State and Nigerians not to waste their votes for President Jonathan and PDP, adding that the President admitted few days ago in Rivers State that he had failed the Niger Delta people for not impacting on the region in the last six years.

APC won’t recognise flawed polls, says Odigie-Oyegun

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) will congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan if he wins next month’s presidential election in a fee and fair contest.

But, the party will not agree, if results are manipulated, its National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, has said

The APC, he added, will not hesitate to form a parallel government, if the presidential election is rigged.

Odigie-Oyegun expressed the party’s position in a message to Nigerians at the weekend.

He congratulated Nigerians on the Christmas, Eid el Maulud and the New Year, but regretted that the people had bleak celebrations, because of the mismanagement of the economy.

He said:  ”As a party, we assure you that we will congratulate President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if our presidential election candidate and the party are defeated in free and  fair elections, and will not go to court.

“However, as a party, we wish to reiterate that  we will not hesitate to consider forming a parallel government, if the 2015 elections are rigged either by use of security agencies (police and military) to harass, intimidate and cajole voters or through the use of a compromised Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

”We are aware that it has been bleak celebrations for all of us because of the poor performance of the economy, litany of failed promises and general decay in governance in our dear country, including unpaid salaries – a result of the drop in the state and local government revenues.

“The drop in state and local government revenue is as a result of corruption in government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and oil theft supervised by government. We ask all Nigerians to exercise fortitude because the change we seek is almost here.

“We wish to also remind you that the change we expect will be a consequence of your action. That action will be to vote massively for the APC in the next election to herald a new dawn and bid farewell to the failed leadership of the PDP.

“We ask you to collectively insist on free, fair and transparent  elections, because that is the only way to allow the wishes of the people to manifest.”

Hold Jonathan’s administration responsible for insurgency, says Odigie-Oyegun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians to hold President Goodluck Jonathan’s government responsible for the killings and destruction of lives in the Northeast and other parts of the country.

The party said the Federal Government had not displayed the political will to stop insurgency and other violent crimes in the country.

It donated N5 million to the victims of last Friday’s Kano Central Mosque bomb blast.

APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun spoke yesterday in Kano after a condolence visit to the Emir’s palace over last Friday’s bomb blasts.

The APC chairman conveyed the party’s condolences to the state government through Deputy Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stood in for Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, who was on an official engagement.

Odigie-Oyegun said: “We are in a situation where we have a government, we have security services, which now seem to be totally either unwilling or impotent, both of which are equally bad. This is because they are not willing to control the situation. Or, they are powerless that they are unable to control the situation.

“The fear today is that we are gradually crippling towards anarchy. We are not talking of Dane guns anymore. We are not even talking about pistols; we are now talking of automatic weapons in the hands of people all over, in every part of the nation.”

  • Jonathan using Boko Haram for hidden agenda – APC

Jonathan using Boko Haram for hidden agenda – APC

    Party holds ‘salvation rally’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday held a salvation rally in Abuja and accused President Goodluck Jonathan of allegedly using Boko Haram insurgency for a hidden agenda to win 2015 presidential election.

The party said there was no limit to the length the President had not gone in his obsession for re-election.

It accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working in concert with the Presidency to corrupt the system and disenfranchised voters in APC-controlled states.

It queried why the recent collection of Permanent Voters Cards and continuous registration in 12 states of the federation was a fiasco.

It asked the government and INEC to explain why the PVC exercise was muddled up in Lagos, Kano Rivers, Niger, Ogun, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara and all APC strongholds

The APC said it was becoming obvious that President Jonathan might be unable to organize a free and fair election come February 2015.

The party said the President was also planning to use the extension of the emergency rule as excuse not to conduct the 2015 poll in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.

It protested the inadequate funding of the Federation Account, saying it was a ploy to starve APC controlled states of funds.

Besides the rally, APC chieftains defied old age and apparatchik of office to march around Abuja metropolis to draw the attention of the government and Nigerians to the insurgency in the North-East.

The position of the APC was made known by the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in an address at the commencement of a Salvation Rally at the Eagle’s Square in Abuja.

He said the party has tabled four demands which the President must address immediately.

He said the rally was a demonstration of the party’s lack of confidence in Jonathan’s administration.

Oyegun said: “We are here today as a practical demonstration of our lack of confidence in the ability or willingness of President Goodluck Jonathan to organize a free and fair election come February 2015.

“President Goodluck Jonathan is so desperate to win re-election that it will now appear that there is a secret understanding that our security forces should turn a blind eye to the Boko Haram Insurgency so that the insurgents can occupy as much territory as possible and make elections impossible in these areas, knowing fully well these are APC strongholds.

“Otherwise, how does one explain that local hunters carrying Dane guns and amulets are capable of dislodging the dreaded Boko Haram sect while our once proud army, which has distinguished itself in and out of the country, has failed?

We daily hear idle talks that the President needs to declare total war on Boko Haram.

“Pray, what has the Jonathan government been doing since the moment the state of emergency was declared the very first time? Or is the President saying that he declared and renewed the state of emergency several times only to cage the civil populace so that the insurgents can have a free rein?”

  • Jonathan has abandoned Nigerians – Oyegun

Jonathan has abandoned Nigerians – Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Thursday said President Goodluck Jonathan has abandoned Nigerians and cannot lay claim to a re-election ticket.

He dismissed Jonathan’s speech at the presidential declaration ceremony on Tuesday as empty and full of voodoo statistics.

He asked Nigerians not to give the Peoples Democratic Party which had savaged the nation for 15 years another opportunity to “finish off” Nigeria.

He said if given the chance, APC will rebuild Nigeria and reclaim all seized territories from Boko Haram insurgents.

Oyegun, who made the submissions on the state of the nation at a briefing in Abuja, said APC will make history in the next few months by defeating the ruling party.

He insisted that APC will conduct the affairs of the nation “differently and better than the PDP.”

He listed the party’s priorities as follows – Uniting Nigerians, openness and transparency, upholding the Rule of Law, defence of the territorial integrity of the nation, motivate and  equip the Armed Forces, true federalism, rebuilding and expanding infrastructure and investment in human capital, among others.

He said: “The 2015 election will be decided on the character and leadership qualities of the Nigerian President. The Commander-in-Chief should also be “Consoler-in-Chief” bringing comfort and succor to our people in time of grief and distress.

“You heard two days ago President Jonathan saying that good leaders do not walk away from the people, sadly though the statement is true, our President who wants another four years does not show evidence of sympathy for hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens who are now Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) as a result of the occupation of their land by Boko Haram.

“He brings no relief or comfort to those living under the reign of terror. About 50 young Nigerian school children were killed and several others injured in Potiskum just a few days before the extravaganza show of his declaration.

“Yet we do not hear of a Presidential visit to the families of the victims, a pattern that has become usual. Our President lives in his comfort zone, content to utter words, and ‘minutes of silence’ that have no meaning to the victims.

“The President has abandoned the Nigerian people. We should end the journey with President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 and elect a leader who will be part of our lives and lead with courage and empathy.”

Oyegun also said Jonathan has nothing new to offer since he could not fix the epileptic power sector and address the insecurity nationwide.

He said the President’s declaration speech was full of voodoo statistics and excuses for failure.

  • Our fears for 2015 elections – Odigie-Oyegun

    Our fears for 2015 elections – Odigie-Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, said Thursday that the party is concerned about what he described as unnecessary charged political atmosphere in the country.

He also said attempts to destabilize states like Edo and Rivers were signs of what to expect in February 2015.

Speaking when he received the ECOWAS Fact Finding team to Nigeria led by former Ghanaian President, John Kuffour, the APC Chairman said the coming together of the opposition parties to form the APC is making the ruling Peoples Democratic Party jittery, resulting in a charged political space in the country.

He also expressed fear of possible militarization of the electoral process like in the case of elections in Ekiti and Osun States and the attempts to announce fake election results in Osun State, saying “our prayer is that they don’t try to replicate that at the national level.”

He said: “We have a party in power that has been there for about 16 years. Naturally, given the reality of a growing opposition movement, they have become jittery for the first time in our recent democratic process.

“They become jittery and it has resulted in an unnecessary charging of the political space. This has manifested itself in the near brutality which they have wielded all the powers available to the national government in terms of security agencies, in terms of economic power and the rest of them.

“So, the atmosphere is already naturally charged and we could see this displayed in Ekiti State and they tried to display it in Osun State. We saw the attempt in Nasarawa State and the attempt in Adamawa was successful. You can see it being displayed in the destabilization of states like Edo and Rivers States.

“We are very happy that the sub region is interested in the welfare of democracy in Nigeria and has dispatched somebody of no less status of the former President of Ghana.

“Really, what we are trying to do is to politically and in a democratic sense ensure that the voting population are made aware that power truly belong to them and that they can hire as they wish and fire when they so wish. That is the basic reason for the APC.”

  • Northern leaders, governors back Speaker

    Northern leaders, governors back Speaker

•Odigie-Oyegun: he is not in breach of constitution

Unknown to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Northern leaders gave their backing to Speaker Aminu Tambuwal’s defection to the All Progressives Congress(APC).

It was also learnt that the mace of the House of Representatives has been relocated to a safe location to prevent any plot to reconvene the chamber while on recess.

According to sources, Tambuwal made extensive consultations with key leaders in the North and governors before defecting to APC.

It was also gathered that some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors in the North supported the speaker.

A source, who played an important role in the consultations, said: “The defection of the Speaker was a consequence of painstaking consultations with top Nigerians, especially Northern leaders.

“These consultations involved shuttling from one geopolitical zone to the other. At a point, a committee was raised to weigh all options. At the end, the Speaker bowed to superior argument that he should defect.

“Some governors made strategic input into  the movement of the Speaker.

“So, it will be tactically wrong for either the Presidency or the PDP to assume that the Speaker is alone.”

A Principal Officer of the House, who spoke in confidence, said: “Most members of the House were carried along in making the final decision to defect.

“Some members were as aggrieved as the Speaker and they felt he should lead while they will follow later.

“One thing I can tell you that the defection is a popular one among members. Tambuwal surely enjoys high-level of confidence from members.

“This is why PDP must tread softly because ‘this is politics before 2015 politics’. It will be a costly mistake to destabilise the House.”

Just a few hours after Tambuwal’s defection, the mace has been kept in safe custody to pre-empt any plan to reconvene the House before December 3.

APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun last night welcomedTambuwal to the party.

Speaking on Channel Television prime time news last night, he said: “The body language” of the Speaker all along showed that he was not at home where he was.

He described his defection from the PDP as the practice all over the land started by the PDP which poached governors from the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), saying it is settled that people could move across parties.

He expressed hope that the PDP would not allow its impunity to take over it  to attempt to force the Speaker out of office.

According to him, the case between former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former President Olusegun Obasanjo had decided that one could leave the party that elected him and run for election on another party.

He hailed Tambuwal for the tactful way he had managed the affairs of the House since his election as speaker in 2011.

  • PDP desperate to win Rivers, Edo, says Odigie-Oyegun

PDP desperate to win Rivers, Edo, says Odigie-Oyegun

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is desperate to win the governorship elections in Rivers and Edo states, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said.

He also said the Southsouth and Southeast zones are notorious for massive rigging of elections in Nigeria.

Odigie-Oyegun spoke yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Port Harcourt during the maiden meeting of the APC in the Southsouth zone, which had in attendance, Amaechi and his Edo State counterpart Adams Oshiomhole.

He added that the mammoth crowd at Saturday’s mega rally, marking the 7th anniversary of the Supreme Court victory of Governor Rotimi Amaechi at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt confirmed that the Rivers governor controls the grassroots.

The zonal meeting was also attended by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Segun Oni; the National Vice-Chairman, (Southsouth) Prince Hilliard Eta; a member of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja; a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva; members of the National Assembly and party officials from the zone.

The national chairman of the APC condemned the mayhem in Delta State over Saturday’s local government elections.

The Rivers governor called for unity among APC members. Oshiomhole lauded Amaechi for the success of his 7th anniversary and the massive crowd at the stadium.

After the opening ceremonies, reporters were excused.

The national chairman of APC, in his address, said: “For the Southsouth, this is perhaps even more crucial and more important than a lot of the other zones. In the Southsouth, we have the President of the nation (Dr. Goodluck Jonathan) and the National Chairman of the APC. So, there is already, from the very beginning, the challenge that we have before us, that we must prove something.

“The challenges are obvious. The Southsouth is absolutely valuable to both the PDP and the APC, because the two states we control are the two states badly wanted by the leaders of the PDP and they will do whatever it takes to get these states (Edo and Rivers), but thank God, the two states are where we have governors that are charismatic and that have been able to very strongly relate with and identify with the people that they govern.

“Like Governor Amaechi proved yesterday (on Saturday), nothing must be taken for granted. What happened yesterday (on Saturday) was to let everybody see that in case they have any doubt, after President Jonathan’s statement in Benin that the APC in Rivers State only existed on billboards and posters. It was necessary to do what happened yesterday (on Saturday), apart from celebrating the 7th anniversary that brought us this fortunate man, Governor Amaechi. The first challenge is that we (APC) must retain Edo and Rivers states.

“Since the Southsouth and Southeast zones are the home of massive rigging, if the best cannot happen that we can get a few more states in the Southsouth zone, we must at the same time not allow the worst to happen. The worst being that we will become a kind of canon folder that the PDP leaders will use. We have clearly these challenges before us.

“I wish to congratulate the Governor of Rivers State for proving the point yesterday (on Saturday) and making it clear to all concerned, about who controls the grassroots in Rivers state, with the large crowd at the stadium.”

The APC’s national chairman said the burning of houses and confusion in Delta State over local government election was very unfortunate.

He said: “We must praise the APC members in Delta State. The PDP leaders in Delta State are taking the APC leaders more seriously. It is really sad that the PDP members in Delta State yesterday (on Saturday) lost their sense of balance and started burning houses and destroying valuable property. The mayhem is condemnable.

“Whatever the results that are finally written and announced, I want to say that we are quite pleased with the conduct of the APC members, who have shown that APC is fully on the ground in Delta State.”

Odigie-Oyegun also admitted the lack of unity among the APC members in Delta and Akwa Ibom states, while urging the governors of Edo and Rivers to intervene.

He said: “When we finally kill the elephant, there will be enough for everybody. No political party can be a one man party, no matter how strong that one man is.

“There is need for compromise. The problem in these areas is that there has not been any genuine attempt at compromise. We need healthy and virile party. We should now take very seriously the issue of unity in the party, which will turn the elections in our favour.”

The APC’s national chairman also urged members of the party in Rivers and Edo states to obtain their voter cards in order to vote out PDP and its candidates during the 2015 elections.

He said: “A lot of lessons have been learnt. So much has gone wrong in other states and these are mistakes we cannot afford to allow to happen in the two states (Edo and Rivers). We need every vote that we can get. So, there should be massive mobilisation, particularly at the unit level.

“We need quite a bit of funding too to get people from far distance to where they are supposed to get their permanent voter cards, because the N10 or N20 in the people’s pockets is very important.

“Unless somebody is a dedicated person, he or she may not bother to spend such money in this hard time, just to go and get a permanent voter card.”

    • Says PDP must go in 2015 because it has failed Nigerians

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun at the weekend declared that the only thing that can salvage the country from its present ailing condition is for the people to effect change through the ballot box in 2015 general election to rescue Nigeria from total collapse.

He took a cursory look at the country’s 15 years after the return to democratic rule and concluded that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government has indeed plunged the country into many woes. He said “The truth is our country is really sick and needed help.”

He charged Nigerians to vote PDP out of power in 2015 after 15 years of stagnation and agony, so as to bring development and growth.

The APC National Chairman, Chief Odigie-Oyegun made the declaration while delivering the 2014 lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association held at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on Friday evening.

He lamented the socio economic downturn of the country which he blamed on brazen corruption aided by top government officials and misrule since 1999 by the PDP government, saying that the atmosphere that pervades the nation today is that of uncertainty and despair.

In attendance at the well- attended lecture are the APC presidential aspirant, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal , Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, representatives of Osun, Ogun, Kwara States, former governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, a onetime governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, his Imo State counterpart,  Rochas Okorocha represented by the Imo State House of Assembly Speaker, Benjamin Uwajimugo, Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed represented by the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Bode Olayemi, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, students, members of the diplomatic corps, and captains of industry amongst others.

Chief Odigie-Oyegun in his lecture titled, “Nigeria, a trajectory of dashed expectation: Looking into the future with hope”, said while it remains an obvious truth that Nigeria, 54 years after, was perceived and still behaves like a toddler, there is no doubt that the country has suffered stunted growth as a result of gross leadership failure.

“This is exemplified by our failure, as a people, to use our huge human and material resources to galvanize development in our country, this in spite of being a leading oil producing nation in the world.

“Despite the fact the Nigeria’s economy is the largest in Africa, yet, it has not translated into a better living standard for the citizens. The people of Nigeria though amongst the world’s most talented, are today suffering from brain drain, unemployment and poverty. In reality, the country is suffering from administrative and management neglect, high unemployment, social deprivation, abject poverty, filth, squalor, insecurity and even increasing endemic ethnic and religious conflict. As the country is burdened by under development and insecurity challenges, the federal government being hamstrung in curtailing it, many are of the opinion that the country is sliding into chaos,” he stated.

While noting that  today Nigerians  are virtually in a country at war with itself with so much violence, the lecture said the truth is, our country is really sick and needed help, even as examined the progress being made in many areas of everyday living by countries not as endowed like Nigeria.

For example, Chief Odigie-Oyegun said, “there is economic growth in all OPEC member countries. In 2012, the fastest growing economies were Iraq, Libya, Nigeria and Qatar, while the least growing economies were Iran, Libya and Algeria. However, in Nigeria, it is apparent that the growth is yet to translate into tangible development.  A quick check between Nigeria and her age mates shows clearly that while some of those who had independence same time with Nigeria have earned global reputation for their improved economies through manufacturing and export of their products, Nigeria still seems to rely on other countries for her survival.”

He accused the federal government of championing the cause of corruption when he related the alleged $9.3million and over $5 million cash for arms deal seized in South Africa, adding that the whole episode makes mockery of Nigeria as a nation.

He wondered  why will the federal government resort to using private jets for such transactions with the avalanche of official aircraft at its disposal, stating that it was a clear case of money laundering now being white-washed by agents of the state as money meant for arms purchase.

“This is no time to lead the blind in our country. We are definitely leaving in difficult times beset with problems. These problems and difficulties are by and large man-made and we must not, as Frantz Fanon had warned, continue to waste our time in sterile litanies and nauseating mimicry. We must avoid a leadership that will not serve our collective interests,” he declared.

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Waziri Tambuwal, in his brief remarks bemoaned the state of education in the country, which he said needed urgent surgery.

He explained that over the past years the House had tried to ensure that education regained its glory, but blamed the executive for unnecessary interference in the legitimate role of the legislature in its oversight functions.

He, however, expressed hope for the future of the country, while urging for patience and understanding.

The governor of Oyo State , Senator Abiola Ajimobi in his address described the former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as the most stoic leader Nigeria ever produced, and stated that the message being sent by the arrays of leaders in the APC is that there is going to be Change and hope for Nigeria.
