Kogi ADC chairman, others dump party, adopt Ododo

The Kogi State Chairman of the African Democratic Party (ADC), Kingsley Oga, and other members of the party across the three senatorial districts have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ADC chieftains at the weekend collapsed their structure into APC and endorsed the party’s candidate, Usman Ododo, for the November 11 governorship election.

The only ADC House of Assembly member, Hon. Idowu Ibikunle, representing Yagba West Constituency, also declared his support for the APC candidate.

He said she would campaign widely for him despite being an ADC House of Assembly member.

Addressing party members during the defection on Friday, Oga affirmed his position as the state chairman of the ADC but noted that the ADC members in the state had decided to abandon the ADC candidate and work for Ododo.

According to him, among all the governorship candidates for the November 11 gubernatorial election in Kogi State, Usman Ododo, the APC candidate, is the most suitable for the seat.

He said a five-man committee was previously set up to assess all the candidates contesting, and that the committee’s report concluded that Ododo was the right candidate to vote for in the upcoming election.

He emphasised the need to consolidate on Governor Yahaya Bello’s sterling achievements across all sectors, noting that Ododo would continue from where he would stop.

The ADC Chairman commended Governor Bello for the remarkable achievements across the state during his seven-and-a-half-year tenure.

He also pointed out that, from what had been seen and heard about the APC gubernatorial candidate, he would undoubtedly perform well when he becomes the next governor of the state.

We’ll deliver Ododo, say Okun political leaders

Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Usman Ododo yesterday got an endorsement from Okun Political leaders.

They  promised to give him 100 per cent votes.

The leaders gave the assurances during a meeting convened by the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, which drew all the first class traditional, political and opinion moulders from the five local government areas of the Okun speaking part of Kogi State.

The  monarch had convened the meeting to appeal for a peaceful poll in Kogi.

But the stakeholders told the Royal Father that they had unanimously agreed to support the APC as they were not prepared to play ethnic politics when Kogi needed to be at the centre.

The various speakers concluded that they could not be in opposition to the APC-led administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the centre.

The various political leaders and opinion moulders therefore resolved to return to their various local government areas to work for the victory of APC in the forthcoming November 11 governorship election.

“With the love the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello has shown to the Okun nation in the location of projects, infrastructure and in appointment, we have every reason to go in the direction of Governor Bello, President Tinubu and the APC,” a prominent stakeholder in Okunland, Erick Fiki, said.

The Chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Taofiq Isah, said it was a collective agreement to deliver Okunland to the APC and its governorship candidate because of the many good things that Governor Bello had done for the Okun people.

“The people of Ijumu have resolved to stay with the APC. We have never had it this good since the creation of the state. We have therefore resolved to vote for the APC in the forthcoming governorship election,” he said.

On his part, Hon. Philip Orebiyi described Yagba as the home of the APC, insisting that the outcome of the forthcoming governorship election would reflect the people’s reward for the love Governor Bello has for Okun nation.

“Let me assure that in Yagba, we will reward the APC with the love Gov. Bello has shown to us in the upgrade of infrastructure, traditional institutions and appointments. The outcome of the Governorship election will reflect a landslide victory for the APC,” he assured.

In his address at the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Communication and Spokesperson for the APC Governorship Campaign, Kingsley Fanwo, described Governor Bello as a lover of Okun nation.

“Beginning with the Ejiba Ricemill, one of the biggest projects of this administration; the construction of Kabba township roads, the landmark project of the GYB Model Science Secondary School in Kabba Bunu and the recent establishment of the Kogi State University, Kabba, the administration has proven without mincing words that Okun is dear to its heart,” he said.

“The message of Governor Bello to this meeting is for us to build and develop a partnership that will enable us to remember Kwara State and old Kabba province.

“This partnership, according to Governor Bello, will enable us to record another history regarding the governorship of the state in the future. Let us work therefore in building enduring legacies that will work with this meeting.

He urged the leaders of Okun nation to ensure that the November 11 governorship election reflects an overwhelming result for the APC.

Supreme Court dismisses Achimugu’s case against Kogi APC candidate Ododo

    • Smart Adeyemi’s case to wait till Oct 3

The Supreme Court has  dismissed the appeal filed by a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State, Abubakar Achimugu.

He is seeking  to void  the party’s primary election from which Ahmed Ododo emerged as the  candidate for the November 11 governorship election .

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by John  Okoro dismissed the appeal in a ruling shortly after Achimugu’s lawyer applied to withdraw it upon realising that it was frivolous.

Achimugu had challenged Ododo’s qualification to participate in the party’s primary election, alleging that he did not resign his employment with the Kogi State public service 30 days before contesting the primary election.

In its judgment, the Federal High Court in Abuja found otherwise and dismissed Achimugu’s case, a decision that was also upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, prompting him to appeal to the Supreme Court.

At the mention of the appeal yesterday, the apex court’s panel noted that the appellant failed to attack the concurrent judgments of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal and show that the decisions were perverse.

The court said without the appellant challenging the concurrent findings and showing that they were perverse, the Supreme Court cannot tamper with such decisions of the two lower courts.

Earlier, the court scheduled judgment for October 3 to determine whether or not Ahmed Ododo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State will be allowed to participate.

The five-member panel chose the date after lawyers to parties in the appeal filed by Senator Smart Adeyemi made their final submissions.

Adeyemi is, by the appeal filed by his team of lawyers led by Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), seeking to upturn the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja which upheld Ododo’s nomination.

It is Adeyemi’s contention that the APC in Kogi never conducted a valid primary election, noting that the primary purportedly conducted only held in 11 out of 239 wards in the state.

While adopting the appellant’s briefs on Thursday, Adetunbi said “it is our contention that no valid primary election was held in Kogi State by the APC.”

Adetunbi added that purported primary election was not conducted in the 228 wards contrary to the provisions the Electoral Act and the party’s guidelines.

The appellant’s lawyer said the attention of the two lower courts (the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal) was not drawn to the reports of the field officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who confirmed that the primary election did not hold in, at least, 228 wards in the state.

Adetunbi prayed the court to allow the appeal, set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal, which earlier affirmed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, and grant the reliefs as sought by the appellant.

Lawyer to the APC,  Abdulwahab Mohammed urged the court to dismiss the appeal with substantial cost, arguing that the appeal is against the concurrent findings of both courts below, which the appellant did not show are perverse.

Lawyers to Ododo and INEC argued in similar manner and prayed the court to dismiss the appeal.

Kogi Gov: Supreme Court dismisses Achimugu’s case against APC’s Ododo

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, September 28, dismissed the appeal by a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Kogi state, Abubakar Achimugu, seeking to nullify the primary election of the party, which produced Usman Ododo as the APC governorship candidate for the election slated for November 11 in the state.

The appeal was dismissed by a panel of Supreme Court justices, including John Inyang Okoro, Hellen M. Ogunwunmiju, Adamu Jarrow, Emmanuel Agim, and Tijani Abubakar, having been withdrawn by the appellant.

Achimugu had approached the trial court with a suit seeking to disqualify Ododo on the ground that he did not resign his employment with the Kogi State public service 30 days before contesting the governorship primary election.

But the trial court, in its judgment, held that, contrary to the claim of Achimugu, evidence showed that Ododo resigned his appointment more than 30 days before participating in the APC primary election and therefore dismissed the suit.

According to Justice Egwuatu, exhibits tendered by the defendants showed that while Ododo’s resignation letter was received by the Office of the Kogi State Governor on March 8, that of the 3rd defendant, Mr Salami Deedat, was received on March 9.

The Appeal Court also held, in a unanimous judgment, that the appeal challenging the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja lacked merit and dismissed it accordingly.

At the Supreme Court’s hearing of the appeal in the case Achimugu v. APC & 3 Ors, on Thursday, K. C. Udeh Oyibo, Achimugu’s lawyer, said that the respondents did not resign their appointments but later agreed that they resigned.

The Supreme Court queried the Appellant’s Counsel on why his issues for determination in the Appellant’s brief did not have any challenge as to why the decision of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal was perverse.

In view of this omission, the Appellant’s Counsel was advised to withdraw the appeal.

Accordingly, Achimugu withdrew his appeal and the case was dismissed.

K.C. Ude-Oyibo Esq represented the appellant, Abdulwahab Mohammed, SAN, represented the APC, S. A Abbass Esq represented the 2nd and 3rd Respondents, Ododo and Deedat; while

Chief A. A. Adeniyi, SAN, appeared for the 4th Respondent, INEC.

In a related development, the Supreme Court, on Thursday, September 28, adjourned an appeal filed by Senator Smart Adeyemi against the judgments of the lower courts, on the Kogi APC Governorship primary election, to October 23, 2023, for judgment.

Adeyemi had filed a suit at the Federal High Court seeking to nullify the primary election of the APC, which produced Usman Ododo as the party’s flagbearer for the state’s governorship election slated for November 11. The case was dismissed by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal for lacking in merit.

The apex court, while hearing his appeal, on Thursday, told his lawyer, Musibau Adetumbi, SAN, that his client was appealing against concurrent findings of the High Court and the Court of Appeal, which held that primary elections were held in Kogi State but that he had failed to challenge these concurrent findings.

But the Appellant’s counsel said he would go ahead to argue the appeal.

The Supreme Court therefore adjourned the appeal to 23rd October, 2023 for judgment.

Chief Anthony Adeniyi, SAN, represented the Independent National Electoral Commission, Abdulwahab Mohammed, SAN, represented the All Progressives Congress, while M.Y. Abdullahi, SAN, represented the APC Governorship Candidate, Usman Ododo.

The Court of Appeal had, on August 18, 2023, held that the appeal argued by Adekunle Oladapo Otitoju on behalf of Senator Adeyemi was completely bereft of merit.

In a unanimous judgment of a 3-man panel of Justices of the Court, Adeyemi was said to have failed woefully to establish all grievous criminal allegations made against the conduct of the primary election by APC and its leaders.

Ododo’s victory not negotiable, says Kogi APC

Ahead  OF the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State, members of the All Progressives Congress in Umomi/Ochadama Ward in Ofu Local Government Area  have said a victorious outing awaits  the party’s candidate, Ododo Ahmed Usman.

They expressed optimism that Ododo’s victory was sure  during their gathering and roadwork event in support of Ododo/Joel in Umomi.

Addressing the gathering, which included prominent political figures and supporters, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Muhammed, thanked the people for their  trust in the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello, and their consistent support for the APC in previous elections.

He applauded the residents of Umomi/Ochadamu Ward for upholding the political principles and ideals of the first and second governor of Kogi State, the late  Prince Abubakar Audu, who he described as the founding father of the APC in the state.

Onogwu acknowledged that Audu’s vision was to transform Kogi State into an industrialised hub with abundant job opportunities for its people.

He said that led to the creation of   the Obajana Cement Company Plc.

“I want to express my gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support for the leadership of our governor,  Yahaya Bello. It is noteworthy that since 1992, when our leader was first elected and in all subsequent elections, Umomi/Ochadamu Ward has never faltered to opposition. Even after 2003, when Prince Audu lost to the party in power at the federal level due to ‘federal might,’ he was unable to realise his dreams of revitalising Ajaokuta.

“Our governor shares the same vision of industrialising Kogi State. He has tirelessly confronted and surmounted numerous challenges to ensure that the people of Kogi benefit from the abundant natural resources bestowed upon us by God, which are found in every local government area.

‘’Consequently, when the opportunity arose for the nomination of a minister, he wasted no time in nominating the son of the late Prince Abubakar Audu, Prince Shaibu Audu. When some of us inquired about his choice of Prince  Audu, Governor Bello emphasised that the political principles and ideals of Prince Abubakar Audu must continue to thrive, and he would do whatever it takes to vigorously pursue his vision.

“Our President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also served as the Governor of Lagos while Prince Audu governed Kogi, shares the same aspirations for reviving Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited.

‘’To this end, he established the Ministry of Steel Development and appointed Prince  Audu as the minister. This clearly demonstrates that the prospect of Ajaokuta’s revival, which would create thousands of jobs, is brighter today. Additionally, when the search for the deputy governorship candidate intensified, with just three days left until the deadline, many names were presented to the governor and the party.”

“I implore you all, this election is another battle we must win to honor the legacy of Prince Abubakar Audu and to reciprocate the gesture of governor, Bello over the years as we have done before, and as we shall continue to do,” he said.

Onogwu also revealed the state government’s commitment to providing free education at the primary and secondary school levels, along with covering WAEC, NECO, and JAMB fees for students in public schools. He urged the people to reciprocate this gesture by ensuring a resounding victory for the APC on November 11.

Councillor representing Ochadamu Ward, Hon Jonathan Thomas, reiterated that the party had been fortified to guarantee an unassailable victory for Ododo/Joel in the polls.

He praised Bello for his support of the federal government’s initiative to provide palliatives to the people following the fuel subsidy removal. He said  through the palliatives have been distributed to  residents.

    Kogi community backs Ododo

The Angwa Ogebe community in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State has adopted the All Progressives Congress(APC) governorship candidate in the November 11 governorship election .

The endorsement, they said, was due to their respect for Professor Salifu Usman Ogbo, the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, who the people have now recognised as APC’s  torchbearer  in the  community.

According to the people, the bond between Prof Ogbo and the Angwa Ogebe community is deeply rooted in what they described as his  achievements in the polytechnic and his  impact on the community.

Interacting with reporters, Prof Ogbo conveyed his confidence in his community’s unwavering support, highlighting that any other candidate who had visited the area was greeted by what he aptly termed a “fake” crowd.

He clarified that the purpose of the event was to honour the invitation by his people ahead of the November election.

The  professor of Political Science boasted  that the APC would triumph in his community.

On the agitation for the return of power to Kogi East, the Rector noted that he would not want to dabble into the issue so as not to be misconstrued. He, however, said that there is no written agreement on power rotation and that those clamouring for Igala agenda are hiding under selfish interest.

The highlight of the event was the donation of a brand-new motorcycle by  Prof Ogbo  to one of his  supporters, the distribution of bags of rice to the community and the inauguration of some campaign offices established to support Ododo’s bid.

Ogbo pledged to pay for West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees, support widows, and create hundreds more jobs for the people should Ododo win the governorship.
