Ondo polls: Governor Ododo mobilises Ebira community for Aiyedatiwa

Kogi Governor, Usman Ododo, has urged Ebira community in Ondo State to vote massively for the All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in this month’s governorship election.

Governor Ododo said the Ebiras would enjoy more democracy dividends under Aiyedatiwa.

He spoke in Owo when led Ebira  community to drum support for Governor Aiyedatiwa.

According to him, “We, the entire Ebira community across Ondo State, have resolved to support and vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming election in this State.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa, the Ebira community stands with you; we are here in solidarity because we believe in continuity. Since the passing of the late Governor Akeredolu, you have upheld his legacies and continued the good work he started.

“You have been tested and trusted, and that is why we are 100 percent behind you. The Ebira people are solidly with you, and we will ensure victory come November 16.”

On his part, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in a fair and transparent electoral process in November.

He praised President Tinubu’s commitment to Ondo State’s economic development.

“President Tinubu has continuously shown interest in our state’s progress. Since his assumption of office, he has never wavered in his support for us.”

Gov. Ododo pays N600m WAEC fees for 18,734 students

Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has approved over N600 million for the payment of the 2024/2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Senior Secondary Three (SS3) students in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Mr Wemi Jones, who made the disclosure at a press conference on Tuesday in Lokoja, said the fund would cover a total of 18,734 students in public schools.

Jones said that the gesture was in line with the law for free examination registration fees for Kogi State students in public primary and secondary schools signed by former Governor Yahaya Bello.

The commissioner stressed that the law had made it mandatory for the government to pay for all internal and external examinations.

According to him, Ododo, being part of the last administration, is building on the solid foundation in education laid by his predecessor.

Jones said the payment would be the second in the series.

He noted that the state government had since 2016 placed education as first on its priorities because of the need to reduce poverty and illiteracy in society.

“The 30 per cent budgetary allocation to education has made it possible for the state to massively fund education, which includes the payment of fees for the students.

“The aim of this is not just to lessen the burden of fees on the parents but also to reduce the out-of-school children in Kogi.

“In 2023/2024 registration, the state government enrolled over 15,000 students for the examination.

“In 2024/2025, the state is enrolling 18,734 students for WAEC across the 21 local government areas,” he said.

Jones pointed out that the rise in student enrolment was an indication that more students were abandoning private schools for public ones.

He restated the commitment of Ododo’s administration to drastically reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state to the barest minimum.

The commissioner implored principals and school heads to cooperate with the ministry to have seamless registration for the benefit of our children and the growth of the state.

He, however, warned that the government would come down heavily on any school principal who tried to shortchange the system.

Kogi Assembly accuses EFCC of assassination attempt on Ododo, Yahaya Bello

    • Group hails EFCC chairman’s professionalism

The Kogi State House of Assembly yesterday accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of attempting to assassinate Governor Usman Ododo and his predecessor, Yahaya Bello.

The Assembly said the persecution of the former governor had dragged for too long and must be stopped.

The lawmakers also called for the immediate sack of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede for his alleged unprofessional handling of the case against ex-Governor Bello.

But a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Journalists Against Corruption (JAC), hailed Olukoyede for handling the Yahaya Bello saga with professionalism.

It urged President Bola Tinubu to call Governor Ododo to order for allegedly shielding Bello from the law.

The Kogi State lawmakers spoke during plenary in Lokoja, condemning what they called EFCC operatives’ unprovoked attack on the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja.

They said an attack on Ododo was also an attack on the people of Kogi State.

The lawmakers’ resolutions followed the consideration of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Akus Lawal (Ankpa I State Constituency), which Jacob Olawunmi (Mopamuro State Constituency) seconded.

In his lead debate, Lawal said the EFCC was out to humiliate and possibly “kill” Bello and Ododo.

    His colleagues supported the motion.

Olawumi said the audited financial reports of the state had always been published by the state government.

He added: “The State House of Assembly can categorically say that no money is missing to warrant EFCC’s unwarranted witch-hunt of the former governor.”

Abu Jibril (Ajaokuta State Constituency) called for the sack of the EFCC boss for allegedly attempting to “kill” the governor.

The lawmaker urged President Tinubu to remove him immediately.

According to him, the EFCC’s conduct showed that the chairman was incapable of leading a supposed impartial agency like the EFCC.

“The (EFCC) chairman has shown incompetence that warrants his removal,” he said.

Bode Ogunmola (Ogori/Magongo State Constituency) said: “If I am in London and there is a crisis, if I get to the Nigerian House, I will feel safe. If I am in Abuja and there is a crisis, I believe that if I get to the Kogi Government Lodge, I will be safe.

“For the EFCC chairman to order that fire be opened on the official lodge of the governor, he should be sacked and prosecuted. We should be told why he wanted to kill our governor.”

Majority Leader Suleiman AbdulRazak alleged that EFCC was acting a script written by some political enemies of the former governor.

The lawmaker said the President should be notified of the assassination attempt on the incumbent and former governors.

He noted that the arrest drama was staged to embarrass the former governor.

Yahaya Umar (Omala State Constituency) said: “The unlawful conducts of the EFCC showed that the intention of the chairman was not to arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello but to ridicule the state.

“The chronology of how the event happened shows that the problem of the chairman is not with the offences being alleged, but that they want to disgrace the defendant and Kogi State in general,” he said.

Deputy Speaker Comfort Nwuchiola Egwaba said: “The EFCC is just trying to give the former governor a bad name through the media trial. The EFCC is not sincere in this fight. It has an agenda it is pursuing and the entire people of the state, particularly the women and youths, will not accept this.”

Speaker Aliyu Yusuf, who read the resolution of the Assembly, said: “The House formally categorises the April 17 and September 18 incidents as assassination attempts on the former governor and, by extension, a threat to the life of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.

“The unprovoked attack on the Governor’s Lodge and the firing of live rounds within a diplomatic residential zone further demonstrates that the EFCC has fully marinated in a sense of its own importance and power and now considers itself not only above the law but unanswerable to anyone or institution for its actions.

“Because the EFCC Chairman has shown constantly, gross incompetence, the House has resolved that the President should relieve him of his appointment with immediate effect and replace him with a competent officer who will give Mr. President’s crusade for rule of law the needed effectiveness.”

Also, JAC urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call Ododo to order for his alleged “obstruction of the statutory functions of the EFCC” when the EFCC wanted to arrest and prosecute to account for his activities when he was “governor of Kogi State for eight years”.

A statement by JAC’s Programmes Director Kehinde Osifisan reads: “A valid and subsisting warrant of arrest had earlier been issued against Bello. What is expected of a decent personality, especially a former governor, is to submit to the rule of law and make himself available for interrogation and possible prosecution.

“It is very clear and unambiguous that the immunity presently enjoyed by Governor Ododo does not cover his predecessor.

“It is on this note that we are calling on President Tinubu not to watch the disgusting and internationally embarrassing scenario involving Bello and Ododo further, as it portends serious danger for nation.

“But for the maturity and professionalism of the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Olu Olukoyede, the invasion of the EFCC headquarters by Bello and Ododo on September 19, 2024 with the full retinue of the Kogi governor’s security convey, which included armed mobile policemen, DSS operatives and others, the situation would have led to casualties, bearing in mind the interagency rivalry among the forces.

“While commending Mr. Olukoyede of EFCC, we urge him not to be discouraged and to ensure he brings to book not only Yahaya Bello but all other so-called “sacred cows” who have stalled the progress of the nation with unmitigated corruption.”

  • Ododo committed to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda – Fanwo

Ododo committed to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda – Fanwo

Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo has said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is “unrepentantly committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his efforts to make the nation better”.

Fanwo, who said this while fielding questions from newsmen at the Ilorin International Airport on Friday, said the relationship between the President and Governor Ododo remains that of a “father and son” and the Governor is an “inveterate believer in the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President”.

He insisted that Governor Ododo would always rally the people of Kogi State behind the President.

Reacting to the incidents at the EFCC Headquarters and the Kogi State Government Lodge on Wednesday, Fanwo said the Governor’s action was borne out of patriotism on one hand and the need not to overheat the  security situation on the other.

“The Governor wants to make it clear that his decision to go with the  former Governor Yahaya Bello to the EFCC was borne out of his patriotic zeal to ensure that law enforcement agencies are respected and supported to do their job, especially as the former Governor also expressed his readiness to honour the invitation of the Anti Graft Agency as a leader who has respect for constituted institutions.

“He also said his decision to leave the Kogi State Government Lodge when EFCC officials started shooting sporadically there was to avert a  confrontation between them and his own security operatives which could lead to bloodshed.

“Governor Ododo is a perfect gentleman who is committed to peace and security. He sees the Renewed Hope Administration as his own administration and has remained loyal and committed to Mr President. He believes that Mr President is the best for Nigeria at a time like this when tough decisions are needed to salvage our nation and make it truly prosperous”.

On whether the Governor is distracted over Wednesday’s incidents, Fanwo said such assumptions tend to “underrate the focus and commitment of the Governor to issues of development”, assuring the people that the Governor remains committed to the development of his state and Nigeria as a whole.

“Governor Ododo immediately returned to Lokoja in good time to lead the APC Local Government Campaign Flag off yesterday and you could see the tumultuous turnout which is an indication that APC remains the party to beat in Kogi State. He also assured the people of a free and fair Local Government Poll on October 19.

“Immediately after the Local Government Campaign Rally, the Governor moved to Akoko Edo in Edo State to join the APC ‘s efforts at clinching the Governorship poll tomorrow. It will be his second time of rallying the people of Edo State behind the All Progressives Congress as he was also there last week. His loyalty to the party and Mr President is iron-cast.

“Also yesterday, the Governor expressed confidence in the party’s success in tomorrow’s election, saying more states for APC will also mean more cooperation with the center to actualize the gains of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President. Mr President is committed to developing Nigeria and he is working with all the states regardless of party affiliation. But being in the progressive fold makes it easier to understand with and also cooperate for the realization of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“He told the people of Edo State to come out massively to elect the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The Governor has remained in Akoko Edo to mobilize the people behind the party”.

Fanwo also said the Governor would want to appreciate the National Security Adviser for the “general improvement in security around the country”, saying Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has proven his mettle as an “indomitable crime fighter”.

“Governor Ododo has worked extensively with the Office of the NSA to strengthen security in Kogi State and all he has for the NSA is commendation for the professionalism and steel that he has brought to the security sector of the nation. He urged all Nigerians to support the security efforts of the present administration as the nation can only witness development in a peaceful atmosphere,” the Commissioner noted.

Fanwo also said the State had become a construction hub “as many projects have been completed while others are in different stages of completion.”

“Governor Ododo has turned Kogi State into a construction hub. Some of the infrastructural projects have been completed while others are in different stages of completion. The administration is also improving infrastructure at the rural areas as a part of our strategies to boost agricultural production. Rural areas are now witnessing massive projects in road construction, healthcare facilities and beautiful schools. His intention is to make livelihood better in rural areas so as to empower more people to go into agriculture. Kogi is focused on becoming the food basket of Nigeria.

“In his First Year Anniversary, many of those projects will be commissioned. We know our responsibilities to our people and Nigerians due to our location as the gateway to the North and South of this great nation. The Governor will not disappoint,” he assured.

The Information Commissioner also said Governor Ododo is “eternally grateful” to Mr President for his ongoing efforts at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

“Governor Ododo has also expressed his eternal gratitude to Mr President for ongoing efforts at reviving the Ajaokuta Steel Company. He believes that when fully operational, it will improve the nation’s economy instantly”, he said.

  • How I am developing Kogi, by Ododo

How I am developing Kogi, by Ododo

How has Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo been grappling with the challenges of governing the Northcentral state? Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the scorecards of the administration in the last nine months.

A year ago, little did he guess that he would mount the saddle. But fate catapulted the former Accountant-General of Kogi State to the front seat in the post-Yahaya Bello period. Since January, the task of repositioning the state has been his major priority.

Governor Usman Ododo inherited unfinished business of development in education, agriculture, health, security, judicial reforms, and infrastructural development.

He definitely has a different style. Non-confrontational and non-controversial, he is a silent worker, and his motive is to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor while also striving to make a difference. Under Ododo’s leadership, there is peace in the state government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter. So far, there is also no predecessor-successor crisis in the Confluence State.

Ododo’s first move was to unite the diverse people of Kogi behind his administration after a historic electoral battle and protracted post-election litigations. After the Supreme Court verdict affirming his victory, he waved the olive branch, saying that he would be the governor of all. He also urgef the opposition to team up with him in advancing the cause and interest of the state.

Ododo has stayed focused and demonstrated leadership, patriotism, strength of character and empathy. He is courting past governors and other reputable leaders so that he can tap from their experience.

The governor has also successfully courted the opposition platforms. The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Kogi State lauded the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed his victory, ùrging him to sustain the tempo of achievements.

Its chairman, Mohammed Abdullahi, said “Governor Ododo, in the last eight months, has done well for the people of Kogi State. Salaries are paid before the 25th of every month, local government workers are now receiving 100 percent wages, the first for over 12 years; pensioners on a monthly basis keep smiling to the bank.

”This is a step in the right direction and a welcome development. CNPP is also aware of the massive infrastructural projects going on across the three senatorial districts of the state. His engagement of political office holders have also been balanced.”

Ododo belives that he is presiding over a government of continuity. Thus, there is no abandoned project in Kogi. As a member of the previous administration,  he is the bridge to the new period. According to observers, the governor has also fostered equity in the state through the fair distribution of developmental projects across the three senatorial districts. Many have also commended his initiative to spread the gospel of infrastructural development to the grassroots.

Ododo has appointed 717 Ward Special Assistants (WSAs) for the purpose of deepening democracy.

Commissioner for Information and Communications,  Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the appointments were aimed at ensuring participatory governance among the grassroots population, adding that it underscores the governor’s belief in the fact that power belongs to the people.

Some critics have objected to the political appointments, saying that it will jerk up the recurrent expenditure. But, Fanwo disagreed, saying:”The Governor is determined to ensure grassroots participation in governance. He doesn’t want to be detached from the hopes and aspirations of the grassroots. We’ve learnt from past experiences and we should be able to put those lessons to use.

“In the past, many of the Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants that were appointed live in the state capital and didn’t relate with the grassroots people. There was a gap between the pulse at the grassroots and the impression of the government. But with this novel strategy, the people at the grassroots are already jubilating over the commendable inclusive governance.”

Although Ododo came to power as a technocrat, he has acqired political skills. He is also humble with power. His developmental strategy is to mobilise the heterogeneous ccommunities to make input into governance. His development projects are also dictated by need analysis and community preference.

During the flag off of the implementation of micro-community and group micro-projects in Lokoja, Ododo assured the rural communities of his commitment to the development of urban and rural areas. The General Manager of Kogi State Community and Social Development Agency, Dauda  Momoh, said that the Basic Services implementation unit in the NG-CARES Programmes was in fulfilment of the governor’s intention to achieve rapid development, particularly in rural communities.

No fewer than 18,000 people are to benefit from the Clinic renovation, Well Construction and Science Laboratory for Aseni Community; Clinic Renovation and Motorised Borehole and Clinic Upgrade and Water Reticulation for Ihigeba Onro Bihu inTuturu community in Girinya area.

Uder the Nigeria Community Action For Resilience and Action and Economic Stimulus (NG CARES),  Ododo had commenced the implementation of 170 Micro Projects. No fewer than 200,000 people are beneficiaries across the state. During the training of Community and Group Project Management Committees for the projects in Okene, Ododo assured the rural dwellers of community projects aimed at reducing poverty, hunger, while also encouraging self-reliance.

Recently, the governor started the distribution of fertilizer. He said no farmer should be excluded. Ododo also warned against the diversion and inequitable distribution, warning that sabotage would not be condoned.

Reiterating his commitment to developing the agricultural sector, the governor said: “I’ll be intentional in tracking these bags of fertilizer to ensure they reach the right places, in the right quantity, at the right time, and inthe right hands of our dear farmers. The era of politicians hijacking fertilizers is over.”

Ododo has also flagged off the wet season farming. He presented 100 tractors to serve about 10,000 farmers in different communities across the 21 local governments. The governor said the investment in agriculture is a critical step towards poverty eradication, stressing that 75 percent of the  farmland for cultivation will be allocated to youth and women farmers.

To Ododo, agriculture is a critical sector for the economic recovery, stressing that the state’s rich and expansive landmass, water bodies, and political will to invest massively inagriculture would enhance its ability to guarantee food security and sufficiency.

Kogi has unveiledthe Youth Database aimed at centralising information on the youth population for better planning and implementation of youth-focused programmes. Ododo also presented 25 vehicles to judicial officers  to improve their welfare. Presenting the keys to the beneficiaries, he said: “The issuance of 11 vehicles is infulfillment of my promise to the judiciary on the day of the swearing in of newly appointed judges inJuly to add more cars to the arm. That day, this government gave out 14 vehicles and today we’re giving out 11 more to our hardworking judicial officers in the state. We hope to supply more soon so that it can go round all our Judges and magistrates operating in the state.”

In pursuit of transparency and accountability in financial dealings, the governor initiated the construction of an audit complex in Kogi State. The goal is to revolutionize financial management in the state, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively and efficiently. The audit complex, the first of its kind, will serve as a hub for auditing activities, providing a conducive environment for auditors to conduct their duties without interference.

During the 33rd anniversary of Kog iState creation, Ododo reiterated his determination to fulfill his campaign promises. Hr praised former Governor Bello for laying a foundation reaffirmed his commitment to the implementation of the Kogi State 32-Year Development Plan

However, Ododo needs to achieve more for the state. There are many challenges across the sectors. The education sector requires more funding. The health sector should be defended.

Kogi shares border with nine states. Security challenge should be consistently tackled.

The governor has to open an effective channel of communication with the federal authorities. Federal Government roads in Kogi are bad and the state government, which is closer to the people, takes the blame.

The governor does not control the police. But, he has to tackle insecurity. This means that Ododo should consistently seek collaboration with the police and other security agencies in fighting banditry.

Ododo has no plan to dump APC, says Commissioner

The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has debunked a media report that he is allegedly planning to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Ododo spoke through the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, in a statement released in Lokoja.

The Supreme Court had on Friday validated the election of Ododo as governor of Kogi State, while quashing an appeal filed by the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Muritala Ajaka, who challenged the outcome of the elections.

Fanwo’s statement was titled: “Kogi Governor remains a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress, ignore mischief-makers.”

The statement reads: “The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to a reckless and unprofessional media report that the Governor of the State was considering dumping the All Progressives Congress.

“We would have ignored the blatant falsehood but we owe the public the duty of correct and adequate information.

“The promoters of the falsehood are people who are still rueing their woeful failure at the law courts and probably trying to find a back door into the All Progressives Congress, hence their resort to the only tools at their disposal which are falsehood, propaganda, misinformation and disinformation.

Thugs attack SDP’s Ajaka as Supreme Court upholds Ododo, Diri, Uzodinma elections

Pandemonium broke out yesterday on the premises of the Supreme Court Abuja soon after the apex court upheld the November 11 2023 election of Ahmed Ododo as Kogi State governor.

Suspected thugs rushed at Yakubu Muritala Ajaka ,the  petitioner/appellant in the case against Ododo, booing and throwing objects at him.

The Supreme Court also upheld two other governorship elections yesterday:those of Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State and Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

Diri described his victory at  the Supreme Court  as the triumph of truth over falsehood and evil while Uzodinma dedicated his own judgement to the people of the state.

Ajaka, whose petition against Ododo had earlier suffered dismissal at the tribunal and the Appeal Court, was at the Supreme Court yesterday to hear the final judgement which did not go as he expected.

He was met outside the courtroom by scores of thugs who sought to assault him.

He was, however, hurriedly surrounded by his own supporters and aides who hurried him into his SUV which zoomed out of the premises.

But Ododo’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State said it was SDP supporters that launched violent attacks on its own (APC’s) supporters.

Kingsley Fanwo, Director, Media and Publicity of the State APC  condemned the attack on APC supporters ,saying “the attacks reportedly began when supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) started hurling stones, bottles, and plastic containers at APC supporters and leaders immediately after the Supreme Court delivered its judgment affirming Governor Usman Ododo as the duly elected governor of Kogi State.”

He added: “During the ruling, the court had advised all parties and their supporters present in the courtroom to remain seated until all matters before it were fully addressed. However, the SDP candidate, Murtala Ajaka, ignored this advice and left the courtroom with his supporters as soon as the judgment was pronounced against him.

“Upon noticing the jubilant APC members within the court premises, Ajaka’s supporters allegedly unleashed violence, attacking the celebrating APC members and causing significant disruption.

“The APC in Kogi State has condemned these actions, describing them as undemocratic and uncivilised.”

In all, the Supreme Court delivered six judgements yesterday.

All the cases sought to void the Diri, Ododo and Uzodinma’s elections.

The first judgment was on the appeal, marked: SC/CV/648/2024 by Timipre Sylva and the APC in which they prayed the court to among others, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed the judgment of the election tribunal, upholding Diri’s victory.

The apex court’s five-member panel was unanimous in affirming the Court of Appeal’s ruling  that Sylva was wrong to have filed multiple notices of appeal against a single judgment of the election petition tribunal.

Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, in the lead judgment held that it was wrong for Sylva and his party to file more than one notices of appeal against the single final judgment of the election tribunal.

Other members of the panel – Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, Tijani Abubakar, Sadiq Umar and Mohammed Idris – agreed with the lead judgment.

As agreed by lawyers to parties when the appeal was heard on August 19, the judgment in the appeal marked: SC/CV/648/2024  was applied to  the other four appeals which arose from the same judgment given by the election tribunal in the petition filed by Sylva and the APC.

The other four are marked: SC/CV/650/2024, SC/CV/650A/2024, SC/CV/650B/2024 and SC/CV/650C/2024.

In the second judgment, the apex court dismissed the appeal by the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and its candidate in the last governorship election in Bayelsa State, Micah Akeems.

The  court held that the appeal was without merit because the case was based on a pre-election issue of alleged supply of false information.

The court affirmed the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal that the sole issue on which Governor Diri’s reelection was challenged by the appellants was a pre-election issue on which the election tribunal has no jurisdiction.

Justice Garba also authored and read the lead judgment in the appeal.

The NRM and Akeems had claimed that the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo submitted forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in his form 001 and EC9.

Justice Sadiq Umar, who read the lead judgment, held that since the preliminary objection filed against the competence of the appeal was meritorious, it was of no use for the court to consider other issues raised in the appeal.

He proceeded to dismiss the appeal and awarded a cost of N5million against the appellants and in favour of the respondents.

In the fourth judgment, the apex court unanimously dismissed the appeal by the SDP and  its candidate Yakubu Ajaka, marked: SC/CV/654/2024,saying it  was without merit.

The apex court, in the sixth judgment, dismissed the appeal of the PDP and its candidate in the last governorship election in Imo State, Samuel Anyawu.

I rededicate myself to the service of Imo people, says Uzodimma

Reacting to the judgement yesterday, Governor Uzodimma expressed gratitude to God for granting him another victory, and to the Supreme Court, for upholding the law despite the barrage of blackmail and intimidation by enemies of democracy.

Governor Uzodimma said when the people of Imo  overwhelmingly reelected him last year “it was simply based on my sterling performance, which remains unprecedented in the modern history of the state.

“During my second tenure inauguration,  I pledged to serve them with renewed vigour, with honesty and transparency and accountability and with the fear of God.

“Today, with this Supreme Court victory, which I dedicate to all Imo people, irrespective of political or religious affiliation,  I rededicate myself to the service of the good people of Imo State.”

He asked his opponents in the election   to join him  in “the task of reinventing Imo to the state of our shared dreams.”

He said his  doors would  “continue to remain open to all Imo people genuinely committed to the betterment of our society.”

It’s  triumph of truth, says Diri

Governor Diri said the ruling  was not for him or his deputy alone but also for people of the state whose  choice was validated by the courts.

Governor Diri said his administration had started well and would  consolidate on the gains so far made and even introduce new programmes and policies that will benefit the people.

He said:“From the election and the tribunal to the Supreme Court, we won four-zero. This is the triumph of truth over falsehood and evil. There is hope for democracy in Nigeria.”

I am sad but we move forward,  Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the SDP in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, said he was saddened by the apex court pronouncement on the Kogi election.

PDP kicks over verdicts on  Kogi, Imo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed joy over the   judgement affirming  the electoral victory of Gov Diri  but faulted  those on Kogi and Imo.

It described the verdict on Bayelsa State as  another victory for democracy, rule of law and the expressed will of the people of Bayelsa State in their quest for good governance and development on the platform of the PDP,” but said the decision to uphold the governorship elections in Imo and Kogi states “despite confirmed reports and evidence that the elections were heavily flawed and blatantly compromised, marred by widespread violence and manipulations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in connivance with certain unscrupulous officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)” further underscored a very serious challenge created by the blemished operation and violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Electoral Guidelines by INEC,.

Party spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, said the verdicts “further justify PDP’s demand for the comprehensive review of the Electoral Law, especially its aspects concerning the declaration of results of election without due regard to issues and complaints arising from obvious violation of the provisions of the law and electoral processes.”

Supreme Court okays Diri, Ododo, Uzodinma’s election as Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo governors

    …awards N5m cast against AA’s Baimoh

The Supreme Court on Friday, August 23, affirmed the reelection of Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as governors of Bayelsa and Imo states for their second term.

The apex court also affirmed the election of Ahmed Ododo of the APC as the governor of Kogi State.

The court, in six judgments on Friday, dismissed all the cases seeking to void the victory recorded by Diri, Ododo, and Uzodinma in the governorship elections held in their states on November 11, 2023.

The first judgment was on the appeal, marked: SC/CV/648/2024 by Sylva and the APC in which they had prayed the court to among others, set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier affirmed the judgment of the election tribunal, upholding Diri’s victory.

The apex court’s five-member panel was unanimous in affirming the earlier decision by the Court of Appeal that Sylva was wrong to have filed multiple notices of appeal against a single judgment of the election petition tribunal.

Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, in the lead judgment held that it was wrong for Sylva and his party to file more than one notice of appeal against the single final judgment of the election tribunal.

Other members of the panel – Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, Tijani Abubakar, Sadiq Umar, and Mohammed Idris – agreed with the lead judgment.

In the second judgment, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal by the National Rescue Movement (NRM) and its candidate in the last governorship election in Bayelsa State, Micah Akeems.

A five-member panel of the court held that the appeal was without merit because the case was based on a pre-election issue of alleged supply of false information.

The court affirmed the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal that the sole issue on which Governor Duoye Diri’s reelection was challenged by the appellants was a pre-election issue on which the election tribunal has no jurisdiction.

Justice Garba also authored and read the lead judgment in the appeal.

The NRM and Akeems had claimed that the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo submitted a forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in his form 001 and EC9.
