  • China offers Nigeria, others $60b for projects

China will spend $60 billion to finance projects in Africa, President Xi Jinping announced yesterday.

The funding will be provided as government assistance and as investment and financing by financial institutions and companies, Xi said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

He also said China would exempt certain African countries from outstanding debts incurred in the form of interest-free Chinese government loans due by the end of 2018.

The exemption, he said, will be granted to Africa’s least developed countries, heavily indebted and poor countries, landlocked and small island developing countries that have diplomatic relations with China.

He adde that China would implement eight major initiatives with African countries in the next three years.

This will cover fields such as industrial promotion, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, and green development.

He warned however that Chinese fundswere not for “vanity projects” in Africa but are to build infrastructure that can remove development bottlenecks. The Chinese President told Chinese firms to respect local people and the environment.

Speakinmg at the business forum before the start of a triennial China Africa summit, he said “China does not interfere in Africa’s internal affairs and does not impose its own will on Africa.

“What we value is the sharing of development experience and the support we can offer to Africa’s national rejuvenation and prosperity,” Xi said.

“China’s cooperation with Africa is clearly targeted at the major bottlenecks to development. Resources for our cooperation are not to be spent on any vanity projects but in places where they count the most,” he said.

China has denied engaging in “debt trap” diplomacy but Xi is likely to use the gathering of African leaders to offer a new round of financing, following a pledge of $60 billion at the previous summit in South Africa three years ago.

African presidents in attendance include Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Egypt’s Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Zambia’s Edgar Lungu and Gabon’s Ali Bongo.

    There are some controversial guests.

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir, who has been in power for nearly 30 years, is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes over killings and persecution in Sudan’s Darfur province between 2003 and 2008.

Xi told him on Sunday that “foreign forces” should not interfere in Sudan’s internal affairs, China’s Foreign Ministry said.

China loaned around 125 billion dollars to the continent from 2000 to 2016, data from the China-Africa Research Initiative at Washington’s Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies shows.

State media has accused the West of sour grapes over China’s prominent role in Africa and has angrily rejected claims of forcing African countries into a debt trap.

“In terms of cooperation with China, African countries know best,” widely read tabloid the Global Times wrote in an editorial on Monday.

“Western media deliberately portray Africans in misery for collaborating with China and they appear to have discovered big news by finding occasional complaints in the African media about Sino-Africa cooperation,” it said.

Coscharis Motors unveils special offers for Jaguar buyers

Coscharis Motors has announced special offers for buyers of Jaguar products.

Its President, Dr Cosmas Maduka said the firm is  offering special prices, free insurance and a two-year service plan for Jaguar products for one month to guests at the launch.

Maduka spoke at the unveiling of the Jaguar’s first Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) – the F-PACE – at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The F-PACE is a performance SUV designed to offer the agility, responsiveness and refinement that Jaguars are renowned for, together with unrivalled dynamics and versatility.

Developed using Jaguar’s Lightweight aluminium architecture, the F-PACE combines purity of line, surface and proportion with F-TYPE-inspired features, such as the powerful rear haunches, fender vents and distinctive tail light graphics.

The bold front grille and the muscular bonnet hint at the performance potential of its supercharged V6 petrol engines. Elements, such as slender full-LED headlights, forged 22-inch wheels and short front overhang carry the design vision of the C-X17 concept through to production.

The All-New F-PACE sits five occupants in comfort. The interior is a blend of premium materials and finishes, exquisite detailing, luxuries, such as heated, electrically reclining rear seats, and cutting-edge technologies including the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and 12.3-inch HD virtual instrument cluster.

Coscharis Motors General Manager, Sales Ufuoma Umukoro,  quoting Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, said: “By remaining absolutely true to our design principles the F-PACE is immediately recognisable as a Jaguar. It offers all of the interior space you would expect – and more – but because of our disciplined approach to surfaces, proportions, and purity of line, we have designed what I consider to be the most balanced, most attractive vehicle in its class.”

The lightweight aluminium architecture gave the design and engineering teams the ideal starting point. It was created from the outset as a modular structure, so the wheels can be positioned  where they are needed to deliver the proportions, dynamics, and practicality essential for a performance SUV.

The wheelbase and track are not shared with any other Jaguar. At 4,731mm long and with a 2,874mm wheelbase, the F-PACE offers the sleek profile and short front overhang characteristic of Jaguar design together with an exceptionally spacious interior.

Rear knee-room is class-leading and the luggage compartment has up to 650 litres* of storage space.

The light, stiff body structure comprises 80 per cent aluminium, and is the only aluminium-intensive monocoque in the segment. Additional weight savings come from the composite tailgate and magnesium for parts such as the cross-car beam.

With the 280kW supercharged V6 petrol engine from the F-TYPE under its sculpted aluminium bonnet, the SUV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

  • Unemployment: Ex- Kogi first lady offers free ICT training for 1000 youths

Unemployment: Ex- Kogi first lady offers free ICT training for 1000 youths

Former Kogi State First Lady, Ambassador Aisha Audu-Emeje, yesterday vowed to support the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in the creation of jobs to solve the unemployment problem in the country.

Towards this end, her organisation, A3 Foundation, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, has launched a free IT essentials training for 1,000 Nigerian youths.

Audu-Emeje who is the CEO/Founder of the organization, said the free ICT programme was designed to create sustainable employment for high potential but disadvantaged youths in the country.

She disclosed that the global youth unemployment rate was 13 per cent in Year 2014 and that the pandemic of unemployment does not affect Nigeria alone.

Her words: “For me, I am giving back to the society and at the same time, we will give the trainees capital to get to the next stage in life.

“You can see clearly that we are one of the first private organisations to go after the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari to create jobs for the youth.

“We have stepped out by doing 1000 because we believe in Buhari and we know he is willing to succeed in all aspects of his administration.

“According to a United Nations report released in January this year, an extra 10 million people worldwide are likely to be unemployed by 2019. The report mentioned slower growth, widening inequalities and economic turbulence as reasons behind the trend.”

The renowned politician and youth empowerment crusader said with all these daunting statistics, it was imperative for all stakeholders to put all hands on deck to tackle this problem head on, adding: “This is definitely not the time for complacency.”

The former first lady, who described unemployment as a situation where someone of working age is not able to get a job but would like to be in full time employment, stated that “many youth in Nigeria fall into this category with their intimidating credentials from notable schools.”

She identified such challenges as finance, absence of good administration and inconsistent policies as factors suppressing the efforts of the Nigerian government in reducing the unemployment rate in the country.

“The A3 foundation has taken all these factors into consideration and has sought newer ways to address the rising unemployment rate,” she said.

“And that is why we have embarked on the training of 1000 youths in Nigeria in the field of ICT with support from Rockefeller Foundation to further assist high potential but disadvantaged youth in taking their rightful place in society by securing decent jobs”

The training of these youths would not only enable the youth to take their rightful place but would create an environment where the youth can in turn make meaningful impact in the society at large.

“it is our belief at A3 Foundation that the training would go a long way to help disadvantaged youths in the society by taking them off the streets and putting their individuals skills to good use.” Ambassador Aisha added.

She assured that based on the Foundation’s high level of commitment, the training would not be an ordinary one as the organisation intends to follow up on all trainees to ensure that they are gainfully employed.

  • Nigeria offers more opportunities than most foreign countries -Lawyer and arts enthusiasts John Delano

Nigeria offers more opportunities than most foreign countries -Lawyer and arts enthusiasts John Delano

Early in life, John Delano learnt one basic lesson of life. He learnt to live a life of sacrifice and to be able to stand for those in need.   The son of a lawyer, young John learnt first-hand the importance of standing up for others when he had what can be described as a culture shock experience while studying for his A-levels certificate in the UK.

Young John had hoped to contest for a position in his school. But to his shock, a young white boy threw up a point that could be described as racist, by questioning his ability to represent. But just as he was battling with the right response to give, his teacher, also a white man, stood up to his defence, saying everybody needed to be given the opportunity to excel.

That seemingly insignificant experience has continued to resonate in his memory till date, making him more determined to always offer a helping hand to others. “The young man was trying to play up the racism card, but out teacher stood up immediately in my defence. It was a spontaneous action, it was not that he thought over it before responding. I tell you, that particular experience helped me to win the election and it changed my way of thinking. Since then, my attitude to life had always been what I can do to lift others up.”

In continuation of his efforts to lift others up, John and his partners are concluding arrangements to hold a arts and fashion show, which he said is aimed at showcasing the Nigerian arts and fashion industry to the world, as well as creating a platform for young Nigerians seeking the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Tagged ‘Arts and Fashion Lounge, John told The Nation the show is his own contribution towards expanding the nation’s economy. “We all need to do something to expand the economy. There is a lot that you and I can do if we are determined.”

Though a lawyer, John   is determined to diversify into other areas of the economy. Towards this end, he is hoping to create a platform for arts and fashion enthusiasts in the country to excel. “What drives me is the fact that I want a change in our mentality. Presently, I am looking at arts and fashion. The reason is that when I just came back from the UK, I noticed that there was an explosion of expression. This expression came in the form of arts and fashion. So, I asked myself why it is so, the answer I got was that people want to express themselves.”

He is taking some time off his law duties to promote arts and fashion and build a structure which he hopes other people will build on.

“The root of my desire to go into the fashion thing is creativity. I want to celebrate and promote it. Presently, I am talking to some people and galleries to come on board and partner us. The idea is to see an industry that offers a career to Nigerians, so that our children can at a young age decide to take up as a career. I want a situation whereby parents would be proud to allow their children to go into the industry.

John believes that Nigeria has failed to fully exploit the business opportunities that the arts and fashion industry can offer the people. “I lived in the UK for a long time and my experience was that a lot of opportunities are open to the people. We can replicate same here. If you do your bit and I do mine, you would be surprised at how well we can make things work in this country.

“For instance, I believe that all the arts and fashion industry need to grow in Nigeria is for it to be organized. And if it is organized well enough, investors will come from as far as China and other foreign countries.”

While many young Nigerians would give the world to travel abroad, John said he decided to come back home after more than one decade of post graduation experience in the UK because of the better opportunities available here.

According to him, Nigeria remains one of the few countries where a hardworking man can make enough money to live a comfortable lifestyle. “I came back home in 2011 for purely economic reason. You know one thing, for all the problems that we have in this country, this is a place where you can make a lot of money legitimately.

“The UK is already developed, but Nigeria is still developing. What that means is that there are still many areas waiting to be developed. It means there are more opportunities in these virgin areas that are waiting to be developed.

“Believe me, there are more opportunities here than you can get elsewhere. Look at the people selling recharge cards. Though the profit may not be much, but the truth is that it is providing job opportunity for some people. That is the kind of opportunity that we hope to make available to our youths. Don’t forget this is a country of more than 100 million people, by the time you open up opportunities for the people you would be amazed at what we can do.”

His principle of making money, he said is based on opening business opportunities to the communities. “The richest people anywhere in the world are those people who open up business opportunity to the communities.”

Aside from his father, three other people have influenced John’s life of sacrifice. While urging Nigerians to learn to sacrifice in order to bring about the necessary change to the society, John listed the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali and late Indian leader, Mahatma Ghandi, three world leaders sacrificed to create a better society for their people.

John has a very huge dream for Nigeria. He dreams to see a country where opportunities would be available to all irrespective of background.

“What has brought me to this point is the realization that the people in the UK have a better sense of service. They are ready to serve. But we have not imbibed the attitude of service. That is something we need to do to develop.

“When you have a nation that says they don’t want our people to live below a particular poverty level. What they are saying is that while they may not be interested in enriching everybody, but that nobody must live below a particular level. That is my wish for Nigeria. Our people should not live below poverty line.”

The alleged killing of the chairman of Oghara Vigilante Group, Mr. Benson Ogedegbe, by men of the 19 Battalion of the Nigeria Army, has continued to generate more controversy across the state.

Chairman of Oghara Community Youth Association, Mr. Efe Tobor, yesterday said eyewitnesses’ accounts claimed that Ogedegbe was killed while attempting to wrestle a rifle from one of the soldiers.

Mr. Tobor, who spoke through his counsel, Barr. Jane Ovierere, in Benin City, said late Ogedegbe was earlier arrested in 2013 by a joint task force of the 19 Battalion Army in Koko in line with illegal bunkery/pipeline vandalization in Oghara.

Barr. Ovierere said a notorious criminal nabbed by soldiers in May 2015 named late Ogedegbe as the source of their arms and ammunition.

Ovierere stated that the confession of the suspect placed late Ogedegbe on the wanted list of the Army after he failed to honour the invitation of the JTF.

She countered claims by Ogedegbe’s wife that her husband was assassinated by the soldiers because she was at the scene of the crime, and could have been killed by the soldiers ‘knowing full well that she can identify and testify against them.’

According to her, “He never returned until the suspect Mr. Austine Adede was released to the Nigeria Police for proper prosecution and the Oghara Youth election which was fast approaching.

“On the day of his death, late Benson Ogedegbe was seen by a roundabout and was chased by the Army until he got to a no alternative road/route. He jumped off his car and started running until a soldier caught up with him and held him from behind.

“My friend Uforma, who was watching from her room window, saw late Benson Ogedegbe dragging a riffle with the soldier who held him. All she heard next was a gunshot and Benson Ogedegbe falling to the ground.”

‘My love for Nigeria made me reject offers’

Returning Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi has revealed that the patriotic spirit in him was the reason why he decided not to take offers from other serious African countries in the past.

In the past the 2013 AFCON winning coach was linked with a number of clubs and countries, but all failed to materialise.

“If I wanted a job outside the shores of this country, I would have stayed in Equatorial Guinea, and Alhaji Aminu Maigari, the former Nigeria Football Federation chairman, can bear me witness.

“The offer I had in Equatorial Guinea is far from what they are offering me here, but I decided to come back because this is my country,” he said.

Recent reports in Ghana had linked the 52-year-old to the Black Stars coaching job vacated by Kwesi Appiah – and was even quoted in the Ghanaian media as saying it would be a ‘dream come true’ to manage the team.

It was a failed adventure, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) dispelled such links.
