    Emenike gets offers from abroad

Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike claims he has received offers from foreign clubs including a Russian Premier League team, with reports also linking him with a move to England in the winter transfer market.

If those reports are to be believed hook, line and sinker, the Nigeria international has emerged as a target for Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Spartak Moscow in the January transfer window.

”I have some good offers; including from a Russian club,” Emmanuel Emenike told Information Telegraph Agency of Russia.

”As far as I know, Fenerbahce have not received a formal proposal from Spartak Moscow about my transfer.”

Roman Askhabadze, CEO of Spartak Moscow, has played down suggestions that the 2013 African Cup of Nations top goalscorer will be returning to the The Red-Whites, saying there’s no chance of him representing the club in the near future.

Emmanuel Emenike is nowhere near the end of his contract with Fenerbahce, as it’s due to run out in the summer of 2017, having joined the Turkish champions last August.

  • SURE-P offers 279 graduates internship placements

Out of 400  university graduates invited by the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) for screening and engagement, 279 have been sent to partnering firms in Cross River State for a year mentoring and entrepreneurship programme.

The state Graduate Intership Scheme (GIS) project director, Mr Peter Papka, who spoke during the one-day Graduate Internship Fair  said new mentees would now be paid N30,000 every month as against  N25,000 previously paid.

He added that each of the accredited firms for the mentorship programme will receive N25,000 as overhead cost outside other approved logistics.

Papka said about 1000 graduates are expected to apply,  but that the scheme would have to attend to the few that promptly registered  online. While assuring that the government will ensure that the one-year internship in various firms is as conducive, Kapka cautioned that if mentoring firms give poor reports about them their pay would be made on pro-rata basis.

“Such reports about bad conduct, lack of commitment and perennial absenteeism could be met with dismissal from the programme. Interns must be humble in order to achieve success or be retained for permanent employment at such firms,” he explained.

Papka added that government has addressed complaints from partnering firms that they would need to interface with the potential interns before taking them on. “This is the reason we have brought the firms and graduates face to face so that they can make decision on the spot,” he said.

Igiebor rejects offers from Spanish clubs

    • Says he wants a change of environment

Maccabi Tel-Aviv of Israel new acquisition, Nosa Emmanuel Igiebor has told SportingLife that he had genuine offers from both Almeria and Malaga  of Spain but was desperate to leave the La Liga for a new environment.

Igiebor left Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv two seasons ago for Real Betis but he had an injury blighted campaign with the club before he decided to head back to Israel.

Speaking with SportingLife recently in Calabar, Igiebor disclosed that all the criticisms and injuries made him leave the country for Israel so as to rediscover himself where he would be loved and valued.

He however didn’t rule out a return to Spain later on in the future but said that he would never be in a rush to leave his current abode based on his experience with Real Betis.

Igiebor told SportingLife:”It (injury) was part of it but was not the only reason. I have played in Israel before and I have known some things about the Israeli League. For me,I wanted a place where I could refresh my memory and also feel that love.I just needed a new environment away from Spain. I wanted to leave Spain.

While in Spain, Igiebor had a frosty relationship with Real Betis’ fans and was even at loggerheads with top officials of the club over his true age at a time.

The former Warri Wolves and Lillestrom of Norway midfield enforcer also featured in the Eagles Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against  South Africa on  Wednesday and has played over 10 matches for the senior national team.

  • Glo offers tripple recharge option

    Glo offers tripple recharge option

Nigeria’s second national telecommunications carrier, Globacom, has unveiled a unique 3-in-1 Recharge Option to make loading regular airtime credit, international calling packs and data bundles more convenient for its subscribers.

The telecoms firm said the three-in-one recharge option gives its customers the convenience of topping up their airtime credit for various services directly without going through the process of first topping up their prepaid accounts beforeý allocating the airtime for data bundles or international calls.

Launching the three-in-one recharge option in Lagos, its Head, Operations, Mr. Bisi Koleoso said the company decided to simplify the airtime recharge process to provide customers with more convenient options in line with its avowed commitment to put subscribers first in everything.

“Under the new arrangement, customers who want to directly top up and add to their main balance should dial *123*PIN#, while those interested in directly buying a data bundle without cramming codes should dial *223*PIN#. Similarly, subscribers wishing to load International Direct Dialing (IDD) packs should dial *323*PIN#,” Mr. Koleoso added.

He said the introduction of the new three-in-one recharge option is particularly timely for subscribers who make international calls because Globacom only last week crashed the cost of making calls to key destinations like United States, Canada, India, China and UK to as low as 10k per secondý.

Koleoso said customers, who use the *223*PIN# option to load a data bundle, would get an extra 385MB of data when they load a N1000 credit instead of the 350 MB of free data they would have received if they had used the conventional recharge option to load the same N1000 recharge credit.

He noted that the launch of the  option was in sync with Globacom’s relentless desire to make recharge very convenient and accessible to all and sundry on the different call platforms of the company’s network.

“By virtue of our well-established pedigree as always the first network to initiate wonderful innovations in the telecoms industry since we came into operation on  August 29, 2003, the telecoms subscribers have graciously nicknamed Glo the King of Innovations.

“As a proudly Nigerian company, we are happy to blaze trails and set the pace for the industry. With all modesty, Globacom entered the industry as the game changer with Per Second Billing and followed it in quick succession with other innovations. It was on the Glo network that Nigerians for the first time were able to browse the internet on their phones in 2004. It was also on the Glo network that Nigerians for the very first time were able to use the Blackberry service on their phones in 2006,” he added.

  • Africa’s growth offers U.S. an opportunity, says Obama

Africa’s growth offers U.S. an opportunity, says Obama

President Barack Obama has said Africa’s fast-growing economies represent a great opportunity for United States (U.S.) companies to expand their investments if governments curb corruption and human rights abuses.

According to Bloomberg, Obama said Africa represents a great opportunity for American companies to expand their investments, as the U.S. competes with China to tap some of the world’s fastest growing economies.

“Africa’s rise means opportunity for all of us,” Obama told heads of state gathered for a morning session yesteray at the State Department in the final day of U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.

He promised them “a partnership of equals that focuses on African capacity to solve problems, and on Africa’s capacity to grow.”

The president is seeking to shift the U.S. focus in Africa toward fostering investment and trade, instead of the traditional emphasis on providing aid. The new approach is being taken as China has surpassed the U.S. as Africa’s biggest trading partner with a relationship that exceeded $200 billion last year, more than double that of the U.S.

At yesterday’s U.S.-Africa Business Forum in Washington, the U.S. president drew an indirect contrast y to China’s approach, saying that the U.S. wants to work with African nations to promote their expansion. “We don’t simply want to extract minerals from the ground for our growth.”

That prompted a response yesterday from the Chinese government.

“China’s African policy has always featured sincerity, friendship, equal treatment, mutual benefit and common development,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, according to a report by the official Xinhua News Agency.

“This is the fundamental reason why China-Africa cooperation is welcomed by African countries and people.” China, the spokeswoman said, hopes the U.S. “can play a greater role” than it does now in supporting African development.

China’s state-owned enterprises have rolled out projects in every country on the continent, including hydroelectric dams, highways and rail lines linked to the extraction of natural resources.

The U.S. is seeking to expand its commercial footprint in Africa. At yesterday’s forum, which included more than 90 U.S. companies, Obama highlighted $33 billion in commitments to Africa: $14 billion in investments by companies including General Electric Co. (GE) and Coca-Cola Co. (KO), $7 billion in financing to promote U.S. exports and $12 billion for an initiative to double availability of electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.

Obama said he wanted to focus leaders’ attention today on factors that encourage investment and economic stability: governance and rule of law, expanding trade and steps to deepen security cooperation.

To draw more U.S. investment, the administration is pressing African leaders at the summit to protect human rights, especially for women, curb corruption and foster more transparent financial systems. It has been a recurring theme from the president and top administration officials over the three days of the summit.

Obama said: “Capital is one thing. Rule of law, regulatory reform, good governance? Those things matter even more because investors want to be able to do business without “paying a bribe or hiring somebody’s cousin.”

Africa’s biggest need, he said, is “laws and regulations and structure that empower the individual” and don’t simply preserve “power for those at the very top.”

Obama will return to that message during the final session of the summit today titled “Governing for the Next Generation.” The White House, in a statement, said that discussion at the State Department will include emphasizing that accountable and transparent government promotes development.

  • NDE programme offers 740 permanent jobs

The Graduate Attachment Programme (GAP) of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) will provide 740 permanent jobs for graduates, its Director-General, Abubakar Mohammed has said.

Mohammed, who spoke at the flag off of the programme in Abuja, urged employers of labour to take advantage of the opportunities it provides by employing trained graduates to reduce rising unemployment in the country.

He recalled that GAP was conceived in 2006, adding that employers of labour were invited to provide opportunities of attachment for fresh graduates in their companies as a way of fighting unemployment.

“GAP has a life of its own and means a lot to the Nigerian graduates who are victims of unemployment. To them, it symbolises the feature that characterises the unemployed graduates’ world – the interval between the world of school and the world of work, empty interval between the world of unemployment and employment and that void that separates frustration and fulfillment,” he said.

According to him, the programme provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to make themselves indispensable to the employer through their contributions to the value chain.

Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolomemen lauded the initiative, describing it as a vehicle through which beneficiaries can acquire necessary work skills and become useful to themselves and the entire society.

  • Varsity offers Beyonce as course

    Varsity offers Beyonce as course

One of the most scrutinised American pop stars, Beyonce Knowles is climbing up another ladder of fame, with her persona being considered for the academia.

Reports say the Department of Women and Gender Studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey, United States, is offering a course called Politicising Beyonce.

Kevin Allred, a doctoral student who teaches the ‘Beyonce class’, tells the university’s online news site that he is using Beyonce’s career as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics.

The class supplements an analysis of Beyonce’s videos and lyrics with readings from black feminists. Allred says he is seeking to help students think more critically about media consumption.

In the same vein, another school, the Georgetown University has a class called “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z,” focusing on Beyonce’s rapper husband.

Born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé Knowles first captured the public’s eye as lead vocalist of the R&B group, Destiny’s Child, an all-female singing group, including her cousin, Kelly Rowland and two classmates.

Destiny’s Child soon became one of the most popular R&B acts, with the release of its first, self-titled album in 1998. Gaining momentum, the group scored its first No. 1 single on the pop charts with Bills, Bills, Bills, off its second album. The recording also featured another smash hit, Say My Name.

She later established a solo career with her debut album, Dangerously in Love, becoming one of music’s top-selling artistes with sold-out tours and a slew of awards.

Her second studio album, 2006’s B’Day featured hits, such as Irreplaceable and Beautiful Liar.

Also known for her flair for acting, the singer starred opposite Jennifer Hudson, Jaime Foxx and Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls. The film was adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name.

In 2008, Beyoncé married rapper and music mogul Jay-Z in a small, private ceremony in New York City.
