You shall not labour in vain – Aregbesola tells workers

The Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Monday promised workers in the state their sacrifice and commitment to stability of the state even in the face of economic challenges would not be in vain.

Aregbesola stated this in Osogbo in a statement where he also saluted the umbrella body of the workers for being sensitive enough to put off the May Day celebration as a mark of honour for the late first civilian governor of the state Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.

In the statement admonishing workers, which was signed by the Director Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, the governor said the government is well-acquainted with the sacrifices they have made under the gruelling economic condition the country is going through.

According to him, the government had at the inception taken care of workers’ welfare because of its belief that it is through this and the cooperation of the workers that a virile state can be jointly built.

The Governor commended the workers for the resilience and understanding they have displayed with the government in this crucial times, saying his administration is “sentistive enough to recognise their contributions especially in the face of the economic crisis foisted on us certain modalities for the payment of salaries, pensions and other welfare packages.”

He averred that the economic impasse the country and the world is going through affected the majority of the states’ capacity to fulfill some of their statutory responsibilities.

We must express appreciation for the rare sensitivity of the umbrella body of the workers, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), in putting off this year’s celebration in our state as a mark of honour for the memory of the first civilan governor of the state, our own brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, who unfortunately and suddenly exited this world on Sunday April, 23, 2017.

“The Labour Day has coincided with the state burial. The pains and pangs of his sudden death are still with us. May the peace of Allah be with him in his final abode of rest.

“We remember with nostalgia, how this administration, at inception, showed ample commitment to the welfare of its workforce.

“We could not have done less for we hold tenaciously to the belief that it is only through the commitment and cooperation of our workers that we can realise the very noble objectives for which we are here as government.

“More than six years, we have no reason to doubt that our workers have been dependable partners in our development journey so far,” he said.

He stated that with the glory of God and the unflinching support of the workers in the state, he has been able to pilot the affairs of the state effectively.

Aregbesola therefore, sought for the continued understanding and support of workers and the people in government’s determination to take the state to enviable height

Osun sets up inquest into Senator Adeleke’s death

The Government of Osun State on Sunday said it has set up an inquest to unravel the cause of the death of Senator representing Osun west senatorial district, Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Semiu Okanlawon, Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy.

The statement reads: “We are still in shock and great pain over the transition of our friend, associate and brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. He was a prominent son of our state and its first democratically elected Governor.

“Until his death, he was the senator representing Osun West in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was an astute and colourful politician and a generous personality. He was gregarious, enthusiastic and full of life and zest. His death is therefore shocking and totally unexpected.

“The State Government of Osun had intended to give him a befitting state burial which he rightly deserved and which the state had prepared to undertake.

“Regrettably, however, the enemies of the state, through brigandage, violence and evil machinations, created an atmosphere of fear and terror in the minds of our citizenry and friends throughout the federation.

“Immediately the news of his demise filtered in, a band of vagabonds, crying more than the bereaved, took to the streets, looting and wreaking havoc. Journalists were roughened and their equipment damaged. Important dignitaries that came for the burial were equally molested by these thugs.

“Senator Adeleke was a man of peace. He preached peace and lived it through his life. He left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he could not stand violence. This was after he was beaten up by some leaders of the PDP during a meeting in a hotel in Osogbo.

“It is a profound irony and most unfortunate therefore that a few disgruntled elements purporting to protest his death desecrated his funeral with violence and attacks on innocent persons. They dishonoured him and did his memory a great disservice by keeping his friends, political associates and well-wishers away from his burial.

“The best we could do in the circumstance was to declare three days of mourning throughout the state and fly national, state and our party’s flags at half-mast in his honour.

“In the light of this, the State Government of Osun, using the instrumentality of the law, is setting up an inquest to unravel the circumstances of this unfortunate and sad incident, in order to put the record straight on his death.

“We continue to mourn the untimely death of Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. He is irreplaceable in our hearts. We commiserate with his family, the good people of Ede, associates, friends, constituents and generality of our peopleon the passage of this patriot.

“As we pray for the repose of his soul, we equally pray for the strength to bear this heavy loss.”

The gesture is in line with the Rauf Aregbesola-led government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare.

The statement noted that the government did this to ease movements of the people during the period of the festivity.

The Government, therefore, enjoined indigenes of the state to maximise the advantage the free train ride offers them to visit home and enjoy the celebration.

The statement said: “Free train ride as introduced by the Aregbesola government about six years ago is aimed at facilitating the easy movement of the citizenry wherever they are.

“And this programme takes care of both Muslims and Christians whenever it is the time for their festivals. Since its commencement, we can say confidently that it has been a boost to the economy of the state.” the statement said

ICPC vindicates Aregbesola of alleged corrupt practice

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence‎s Commission (ICPC) has described the petition of the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State against Governor Rauf Aregbesola as baseless and unsubstantiated.

The ICPC, in a letter with reference number ICPC/INV/NGB/T.E2/003, addressed to the petitioner, Chairman, Civil Society Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State, with a copy sent to the Osun Secretary to the State Government, stated that it’s investigations have not established an act contrary to the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Act, 2000 as none of the allegations were substantiated.

The commission stated that having diligently investigated the allegations and finding nothing against Governor Aregbesola, the allegations have been dismissed.

The Government, through the Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, reminded Nigerians that the ICPC’s final decision was a vindication of the repeated claims by the government that the group was one of individuals hired for the purpose of tarnishing its name.

ICPC, in the letter titled, Re: Petition against Osun State Governor- Mr. Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, for criminal and reckless mismanagement of Osun State funds since November 2010 to August 2015 held that all of the allegations brought forward have been looked into conclusively with no infraction substantiated.

According to ICPC, “The above case bordering on fraudulent diversion of N11.4 billion obtained through Osun SUKUK bond to private foreign account, money meant for building of schools regardless of the N13.9 billion intervention funds from. The Federal Government through UBEC for the purpose of building classrooms has been investigated conclusively with no infraction substantiated.

“An investigation of‎ the above allegations confirmed that Osun State government raised N11.344 billion from the issue of the SUKUK bond through Nigerian commercial banks. Investigation also revealed that after the issue of the bond, Osun State Government sought and got approvals from the Securities and Exchange Commission and Shariah Board of Lotus Capital Ltd. To amend the schedule of schools to be constructed from 27 mixed schools to 11 high schools and to furnish the schools. The approval of SUKUK holders is still pending.

“Also contrary to the allegation that the SUKUK proceed was diverted to private foreign account, it was disbursed from Osun SUKUK company accounts with 13 Collecting Nigerian Commercial banks and used for payments of contractors awarded the contracts of construction and furnishing of 11 senior Secondary Schools in various part of Osun State.

“Furthermore, contrary to the allegation that N13.9 billion was disbursed by UBEC to Osun State, the total of N7,192,585,041.64 has been disbursed to Osun SUBEB for the period 2011-2015. This amount consists of Universal Basic Education matching grants, Special Education Funds, Teachers Professional Development Fund and state’s counterpart funds lodgement in line with UBE Act 2004.

“In view of the above paragraphs, investigations have not established an act contrary to the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 as none of the allegations were substantiated. Therefore the matter is hereby laid to rest”. The Commission said.

The Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, stating the Government’s position over the outcome of the ICPC’s investigations, said the Aregbesola government was never in doubt that the group was an illegal one which was only being used by traducers of the administration to diminish its many achievements.

“When the so-called group was everywhere making its highly irresponsible and frivolous allegations, we never minced words on the fact that it was an unregistered group of few disgruntled, hired individuals to tarnish the image of the government and seek to diminish the massive good governance initiatives that are the hallmarks of our interventions here.

“The ICPC’s dismissal of the frivolous allegations is a vindication of our earlier position on the group and other collaborators in their ignoble campaigns of calumny.

“The Aregbesola administration has instituted the most transparent, people friendly government in its six years and more and we do not intend to depart from this path. This is because we are convinced in this lies the brighter future of our dear state,” Okanlawon added.

    • Caution media against false reports

Former Governor of Kano state and Senator representing Kano Central district, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso; and the Seriki Hausa Community in Ife on Tuesday said reports of the evacuation of Hausa men from Ile Ife after last week’s clash are targeted at further escalating a breach that has already been quenched.

Both Kwankwaso and the Governor of Osun Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola cautioned the media against reports that could jeopardise the peace of the country.

Kwankwaso described as mere rumours report that Hausa people in Ife have been migrating from the state up North.

He said commentators should be careful with reports on both the conventional and social media so as not spark another trend of a crisis in other parts of the country.

The senator stated this during a condolence visit he paid to Governor of Osun at the government house Osogbo.

Senator Kwankwaso who stressed that the kind of reports being disseminated by the media may aggravate the crisis commended the efforts of the Osun Governor in arresting the ugly incident.

“I want to appeal to our media men and women to be mindful of how they report the crisis so that it won’t lead to a reprisal attack in other parts of the country.

“We should be mindful of what we write and use on our conventional media and the social media as well, we need some sense of responsibility from our media houses.
”We are not saying you should not do your job, but you should know that you also have a responsibility of maintaining peace in our society,” – Kwankwaso
He pointed out that as soon as he got wind of the crisis he put a call through to Aregbesola and the peace moves taken by the governor has been corroborated by the Arewa community in Ife.

While urging members of the Hausa community in Ife and other parts of Osun to allow peace to reign, Senator Kwankwaso said they should be reminded that wherever they live is their home and everything possible must be done to embrace peace.

The senator who thanked the state government of Osun and the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) for trying to make life bearable for those affected through the provision of relief materials promised that his foundation will follow suit as soon as possible.

According to him, “As soon as I got to know about the crisis, I put a call through to my brother, Ogbeni Aregbesola who promised me on the phone that he was already on top of the situation.

“I am happy that when I got here,  members of the Arewa community corroborated what he told me on efforts at ensuring the safety of my people.

“I am using this opportunity to appeal to the Hausa community in Ife and around Osun to embrace peace and continue to live together in unity with their Yoruba hosts.

“Wherever you find yourself is your home and you should ensure it is peaceful.

“I thank the governor and NEMA for providing relief materials to those affected and I also promise to bring more through my foundation,” the Senator said.

On the entourage of the Senator are members of national Assembly and leaders of the Arewa community in Osun.NEMA

Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso was accompanied by Governor Aregbesola to the scene of the crisis in Ile-Ife for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

Aregbesola also disclosed that more than twenty people who were said to have participated in the crisis have been arrested and will be made to face the law.

He said that what happened was just accidental as people of Osun are peace loving and accommodating.

He noted that Yoruba people may fight one another but they are always protective of and friendly with their visitors.
He buttressed his point with the Ife/Modakeke crisis which he said never touched the Hausa community.

According to him Yoruba and Hausa did not engage in any fight but the crisis was caused by miscreants from both sides of the divide.

“What caused the crisis was a minor disagreement. We are afraid that those who want to cause chaos in the country might be behind this crisis

“Yoruba may fight one another but they will not fight with their visitors. We are very peaceful and if you look around you will find out that enemies of peace are at work and they are few.

“And we don’t know what their aim or interest was in causing this crisis. Perhaps they were sponsored because I have never heard that Yoruba and Hausa fought each other in Ife before but there might be misunderstanding and it would not be more than that.

“God has created and put us together in Nigeria. We must, therefore, live together in harmony. We should not allow agent of division to cause disaffection among us,” Aregbesola said

Aregbesola also commended all security agencies for their swift response to a distress call.

He averred that but for the quick response of security agencies the crisis would have snowballed into terrible level better imagined.
