My vision for Ogbomoso, by Oba Laoye

The recently coronated Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Laoye, yesterday said his vision for Ogbomoso was to create an enabling environment that would attract huge, modern and sustainable development in an even matter.

To achieve the feat, the monarch said he would strengthen Ogbomoso’s areas of comparative advantage by investing to develop key value chains in human and natural resources.

A non-profit and non-political entity, Ogbomosoland Consultative Council (OCC), has presented a developed blueprint tagged: “Ogbomosoland Development Programme Agenda”, to the monarch.

Oba Ghandi spoke after his investiture and adorning with sash as the grand patron of OCC.

The event, held at the Aafin Ogbomoso, was part of the official congratulatory visit of the OCC to the palace. It was attended by notable sons and daughters of Ogbomosoland.

Some of the dignitaries, who are also members of the OCC, include: Dr Saka Balogun, Maj.-Gen. Oladayo Popoola (Rtd.), Maj.-Gen. Braimoh Yusuf (Rtd.), Dayo Lawal, an engineer; AIG Olasupo Ajani (Rtd) and AVM Jacob Bolaji Adigun (Rtd).

Others are: former Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare, AIG Shehu Babalola (Rtd), Adebayo Bankole, Senator Ayo Adeseun, Amb. Akin Oyateru, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, a retired Professor of Education, Alice Jekayinfa, Olusegun Adekunle and Adesola Adepoju, among others.

The monarch said: “My overarching vision for Ogbomoso is to create an enabling environment that will attract huge, modern and sustainable development in an even manner. In this process we shall streghten our areas of comparative advantage by investing to develop key value chains in our human and natural resources.

“In addition, we shall create new opportunities for investment through the deployment of technology, knowledge and skills. To this end, I have also stimulated an economic blueprint document which I hope will meet yours at critical points for the benefit of our people.”

Oba Ghandi hailed the vision of the late Soun for bringing the OCC model to reality, saying: “It has helped to channel our efforts in the right direction and has also developed a good network that has become our net worth. I plan to retain the model and even make it work better in keeping with the emerging realities.”

Speaking on behalf of the visitors, Amb. Oyateru said OCC, registered as an Incorporated Trustee under the CAMA as a non-profit and non-political entity has metamorphosed into an all-inclusive, non-political policy, advisory and development focused body, in keeping with the vision of the former Soun, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi.

He added that OCC developed the blueprint dubbed: “Ogbomosoland Development Programme Agenda”, because the “leadership and members are aware of the need for economic regeneration through massive investment in industrialisation, value addition of natural resources, technical training and skills acquisition, empowerment of critical sections of the society, re-inculcation of social values, enhancement of dignity of labour, promotion of peaceful coexistence and harmony.”

He reiterated the readiness of the Council to work with the monarch to achieve a better developed Ogbomosoland.

Ogbomoso will witness progress under me, new Soun assures

The newly installed Soun of Ogbomosoland Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye Orumogege 111 has  assured Indigenes his reign will usher in steady progress and advancement

Oba Ghandi, while addressing his subjects and guests at the palace after the Iwuye ceremony which marks his official resumption of office as Soun, said a new light has come upon Ogbomoso.

“Ogbomoso is a big town, all indigenes of Ogbomoso home and abroad will be glad to be indigenes of Ogbomoso. There will be new developments in Ogbomoso. Ogbomoso will be different from other towns in terms of development, peace. Everyday, we’ll see God’s compassion,” he assured.

He added: “It is a new day in Ogbomoso land. A new light is here. You all know what we went through before this day happened.

“To those still aggrieved, let us join hands for the progress of Ogbomoso. This is God’s doing, let’s work together to achieve great strides for Ogbomoso. We cannot say we love this town and allow crisis. We will make Ogbomoso better.

“God has sent me to do great things, to bring about development of Ogbomoso. I’m not here as king to simply dominate, acquire wealth, make names.

“I’m here to take Ogbomoso to enviable heights, heights that our forefathers envisaged that makes Ogbomoso stand out in Yoruba land such that Ogbomoso indigenes will be cherished anywhere they are seen.

“The work to develop Ogbomoso has started. You will see the difference. We do not think you’ll see the difference. Many companies are coming to Ogbomoso. Jobs will be plenty such that no more will we have Ogbomoso indigenes search for jobs. I do not talk too much, you’ll see action by God’s grace. The work has started, let’s join hands for development of Ogbomoso land.”

Speaking on the  seven-day seclusion by the monarch, the Head of the Kingmaker, Chief Sobalaje Otolorin, the Aare Ago of Ogbomoso, said  no ritual was involved during the exercise.

“it is our tradition here in Ogbomoso even If we chiefs are installed, we have to stay at home for seven days during the seclusion, you are free to entertain people. You are free to watch television. Ogbomoso’s style is different from other Yoruba towns and we have to abide by the law that we have to stay,” he said.

A  former Chief of Staff to Governor Adebayo Alao Akala and one of the  prominent community leaders in Ogbomoso Dr Saka Balogun, told reporters: “The first thing the monarch should do is to effect reconciliation and he is pivotal to that. Without his body language and express language for peace, that area will remain turbulent for quite some time.

“There has been challenges here and there but because I believe he is the choice by God, that is why he has been able to overcome all the challenges and I believe he will overcome whatever remains of the challenges.”

President Ogbomoso First Group, Sir Olusegun Adekunle, said: “Having a leader enthroned by God is a great thing and we believe we are stepping in the right direction.

“We have to help him with an agenda for development, peaceful coexistence, unity, Economic progress in Oyo State, and Nigeria at large.”

He however advised that the new king has to rule with the fear of God, ask for the wisdom of God and ensure that he  dispense justice to all and sundry.

As early as 8 am, the whole town was agog as palace was full of residents and dignitaries from all walks of lives.

  • All hail the new Soun of Ogbomosoland

The news of the choice of Pastor Afolabi Olaoye, widely known as ‘Pastor Ghandi’,  as the new Soun of Ogbomoso came as a pleasant surprise to me, but apparently not as a surprise to the new king himself and those who know the history of Ogbomoso. The new Soun apparently was told of the efforts of his prominent father, Prince Samuel Oladunni Olaoye, to be the Soun of Ogbomoso in 1940. Unfortunately, Prince Oladunni Olaoye could not realize his dream.

Prince Olaoye, as his father was known, was a civil servant who retired as a Director in the Western Region’s Ministry of Works and Housing in 1969. He was a tall and personable man with much presence wherever he was. Prince Olaoye was pivotal in rallying the Ogbomoso community in Ibadan in taking the body of the assassinated Premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Ladoke Akintola, his close friend, home to Ogbomoso for a befitting burial after the coup d’état of January 15, 1966.

The new Soun has now realized his father’s dream. Prince Oladunni Olaoye had wanted to be king in 1940. He was passed over, even though he was the popular choice, because he was the grandson and not the son of the reigning monarch as tradition required at that time. That tradition was subsequently changed such that the grandson or great-grandson of the monarch could aspire to the throne.

The new Soun grew up as a privileged son in the home of an educated father, a Baptist Christian, as most of the educated elite of the town were. He had the best education going to the University of Ife, graduating in English and Literary Studies and then getting a Masters’ of Science degree in Labour Relations and Management Science at the University of Ibadan.  He has been involved in consulting in a wide variety of areas including management, investment and other areas within the American and African Business Environments.

He is also privileged to be following in the footsteps of his royal uncle, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, a thoroughly modern king and a liberal Muslim who told me that his credo was that religion was a personal calling. He said he insisted that a child could choose one of the universal religions of Islam or Christianity. Indeed, his children were allowed to embrace either of the religions while he remained a practising Muslim to the end. Interestingly, whether by accident or by design, the new Soun is close to Prince Oyewole Oyewumi, one of the children of the late Oba Oyewumi Ajagungbade III. This is a veritable example of the absence of rivalry amongst the princes of the town.  This is important for amity and cooperation, which is necessary for peace and development of the town.

The new Soun is well endowed with savoir-faire. This is necessary in this day and age for what is needed to make a kingdom move forward. Ogbomosho seems to have the tradition or penchant of choosing highly exposed candidates for the throne as happened to the father of Soun Oyewumi who was well known in colonial French West Africa as a business man and of course the just departed Oba Oyewumi who made his fortune in the new Plateau State and now the new Soun who knows quite a lot about the world.

Ogbomoso is a very important kingdom in Yorubaland, sharing borders with Ilorin Emirate, a Yoruba Kingdom now under Fulani rule against which the remnant of the Oyo Empire, particularly Ibadan the successor, fought wars in the 19th century. Ogbomoso has produced three Are Ona Kakanfo (Generalissimo) of Yorubaland, the last of which was Chief Ladoke Akintola.

In other words, the position of Ogbomoso was considered pivotal in the history of Yorubaland. Happily, Ogbomoso’s relations with Ilorin and the entire Northern Nigeria remains peaceful due to the friendship of the last Soun who built his wide ranging businesses with the North and the Emir of Ilorin was a regular visitor to the Soun’s palace when Oba Oyewumi was on the throne.

The new Soun should continue the traditional visit with his neighbours in Ilorin and even Bida in Nupe land.

I got to know the new king by accident precisely in 1992 when I was Nigeria’s ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. He was a young man posted to the Redeemed Christian Church of God ( RCCG) “Living Waters” parish founded by my  late wife, Pastor Abiodun Osuntokun . The posting of the young Pastor Folabi Laoye was meant to relieve my wife from the arduous work of being a wife of an ambassador and also taking care of social activities as demanded by her position and then doing the 24 hour job of a minister of God.

The young pastor was like a younger brother or nephew of mine. He and my nephew, Bankole, were like twins in their social escapades before God called him. Pastor Ghandi, as he is generally known, worked closely with my wife for one year without much friction despite different doctrinal approaches to the work of God. I met Omo, his young wife of Bini parentage who grew up in Yorubaland. They were both our guests for considerable period in Germany. The young pastor, I could see, was really a man of faith whose loyalty to the church and the awesome power of God was not diminished by the fact that it took quite a while after marriage before his wife had children. His exposure to foreign Christian congregation began in Germany but got to fruition in the United States where his talents were doubled by the grace of God.

He ministered to the ordinary and the important people in the society and by the turn of the last century, his fame as a successful African pastor in the United States was so high that in 1999 he was a guest of the new democratically-elected president, Olusegun Obasanjo during his swearing in as head of state. I can say without being immodest that I was present at the beginning of his missionary journey.

His mission as Soun of Ogbomoso, according to his statement, is to be a shepherd to everyone in the town – Christians, Muslims and Traditionalists. I pray he does this successfully.

The new Soun must appoint those needed to minister to the variety of faiths available in his kingdom and with that in place, he will have peace of mind and time to worship his own God the way he is used to. The task ahead is how to use his considerable influence and contact to bring development to Ogbomoso and build on the legacies of his immediate predecessor in office. Peace is a necessary condition for development. He must always remember that Ogbomoso can be very volatile as religion and injustice are two issues that can easily be exploited by social and political malcontents to precipitate chaos. I have no doubt that that the new Soun would be just and fair to all the people at all times because he would not need any material benefits from his position as the ruler of the town.

He should not allow himself to be pushed into rivalry with the Olugbon, Aresa, Onikoyi and other Obas in his territorial domain or even with the new Alaafin when he is chosen and crowned. He should visit the new Alaafin when he is appointed and begin an era of peace with Oyo, something that was missing previously. He should also be friends with the Olubadan who shares with Ogbomoso the fact that unlike other Yoruba Obas and just like the Soun, the traditions in Ibadan are not buried in mysticism and obscurity.

I celebrate with the Ogbomoso people with whom I am very familiar having written books on Chief Ladoke Akintola and Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, whose son Oyewole is married to my niece Ajibike, and I consider myself involved in the welfare of the Ogbomosho kingdom.

May the new Soun’s time be peaceful and prosperous and may Ogbomoso witness peace and tremendous development during the reign of Soun Afolabi Oluseyi Olaoye.

Oba Oyewunmi ascended the throne on October 24, 1973 and ruled the ancient town for 48 years.

  • ‘I never expected what I met in LAUTECH’

Registrar of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Dr Kayode Akindele Ogunleye, has said he never expected the level of development he met in the university on assuming duty as the chief Administrative Officer in February.

He said the level of infrastructural and innovative developments surprised him, because he never expected they could be so pronounced.

Ogunleye said the picture painted by the university, which has been engulfed in ownership and funding crisis for years, was not as bad as the reality on ground.

“When I was initially appointed as LAUTECH Registrar and I went to the meeting of Registrars of Nigerian Universities, my colleagues were asking funny questions like if l knew what l was venturing into.

“However, I made them to know that there was more of negative news about the university than positive and that their insinuation was wrong,” he said.

Ogunleye, who until his appointment as Bowen Registrar in 2014 was a Deputy Registrar in LAUTECH,,  added that he could remember that he did not want to apply when he saw the advertisement because, he was also affected by the negative news about the institution.

He added that he eventually put in his application due to the words of encouragement he received from the Vice-Chancellor of Bowen University, Prof Joshua Ogunwole.

“I did not want to apply because the negative news affected everybody and I said I would not apply. However, when I told the VC of Bowen, Prof Joshua Ogunwole, he said: ‘Kayode, you must go. Go and do the interview. You know when it comes to technology, we respect that university. A lot of us know that university has potential. You must go. You have something to do there.’”

The Ogbomoso-born registrar said recently, some influential people he least expected  called him, saying they wanted to bring their children to the university, requesting for assistance with admission.

He said the large number of candidates, who chose LAUTECH as their first and second choices in the on-going admission for the 2019/2020 academic session and wrote the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) recently conducted by the university, was a good testimony that the dark days were over in the  university.

Ogunleye further disclosed that, even in terms of academic calendar, LAUTECH is well above majority of renowned universities in the country, noting that the 2018/2019 academic session would be rounded off before the end of September.

The Registrar lauded the proactive measures of the two-owner state governments of Oyo and Osun, which he said had really doused tension in the institution.

He noted that the dream of the university under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M. O. Ologunde, is to transform it to a laudable standard.

  • Live up to your oath, LAUTECH VC tells Lab Scientists

The Vice Chancellor, Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Prof Michael Ologunde, has charged 59 medical laboratory science graduates of the institution to discharge their duties diligently and live up to the oath the profession.

Speaking during the 10th induction of laboratory science graduates at the College of Health Sciences of LAUTECH in Osogbo, Osun State, Ologunde reminded the inductees that their professional body, the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MESCN), would monitor their disposition to societal needs on good health delivery and globally acceptable professional conduct.

“As you journey through life, be determined to be good to people and plan to be good achievers. The Almighty God, who has seen you thus far will not leave you alone. You are meant for a greater height and you will get there. I congratulate you for the laudable foundation that you have laid for a better tomorrow and it shall be well with you. Always remember that you are responsible for whatever you become in life and you shall make positive on your generation,” he said.

He acknowledged the contribution of the College of Health Sciences in the effort to put the LAUTECH on a “good pedestal with acceptable best practices.”

In his speech, the Provost of the College, Prof. S.S. Taiwo, thanked the two owner states of the institution, Osun and Oyo, for their support.

He noted that LAUTECH was facing some challenges, especially poor funding, which he said was largely informed by the downturn in the nation’s economy.

He also expressed hope that the university would overcome indiscriminate interruption of its academic calendar occasionally caused by industrial actions of the university’s labour unions.

  • Oyetola, Makinde pledge support for LAUTECH

Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola and Oyo State governor-elect Seyi Makinde have promised that their administrations will work to ensure that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, succeeds.

LAUTECH is co-owned by the Osun and Oyo State governments.

Oyetola and Makinde spoke when the university management visited them in their states.

Governor Oyetola said his administration is proud of the high standard of education obtainable in the institution, and promised to support it to combat its challenges.

The governor promised that his door would be opened at all times to the Governing Council and Management.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Ologunde, appealed to the governor to empower his management to put a permanent end to incessant strikes occasioned by inadequate funding.

Makinde promised to “rescue the school from the claws of death”.

The governor-elect urged the Prof. Ologunde-led administration to consolidate on the university’s leadership position, saying his government was not against disciplining students and workers, provided it is done with human face.

Prof. Ologunde reiterated that the school management had no hand in the suspension of the Students Union President, Mr. Abiodun Oluwaseun.

According to him, proscribing the union became the last plausible option to avoid a breakdown of law and order.
