  • Ogenyi Onazi visits, donates N500, 000 to Kano pillars

Super Eagles and Trabzonspor midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was the guest of 2018 Federation cup runners up Kano Pillars Wednesday in Abuja.

Onazi who missed Super Eagles two legged African Nations Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana of South Africa as well as the friendly match against Cranes of Uganda, donated N500, 000 to the team during training to the delight of club officials.

Pillars took to the social media to inform its numerous fans of Onazi’s visit and the donation he made. “@NGSuperEagles player @OnaziOgenyi donated ₦500k to Kano Pillars FC today during training session in Abuja” the club informed.

Onazi interestingly was subject of a recent media chat with Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, with the German tactician denying insinuations in some quarters that the former Lazio ace is no longer part of his plans following a rift.

“It is not true that I have issues with Ogenyi” he submitted adding however that there will be no automatic shirt for any player ahead of AFCON 2019 in Cameroon. “Every player has to be at his best” he added

Nigeria has already picked a ticket for the continental fiesta even with a match against Seychelles in match next year to spare.

The Eagles missed the last two editions of the Nations cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon respectively and will be hoping to return with a bang in Cameroon, the first time 24 teams will be featuring in the event.

  • Usain Bolt may face Ogenyi Onazi in Turkish league if…..

Jamaican sprinter and eight time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt may come face to face with Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi if he succeeds in getting a deal with Turkish side Sivasspor.

The Turkish first division side according to reports is ready to offer the Jamaican a second chance to have a go at professional football.

Bolt who retired from the tracks in 2017 made is keen on switching sports and making a career in football.

The 6ft 5in 32-year-old, who prefers to play as a striker, had a trial with Central Coast Mariners in Australia earlier this year and scored two goals in a 4-0 friendly win over Macarthur South West United during October.

Bolt’s trial Down Under failed to materialize into his first professional football contract, but according to TRT World, Sivasspor may be set to offer the speedster a deal for the second half of the European season.

Sivasspor are currently 11th in Turkey’s top division, having finished seventh last season.

Bolt would not be the first big name on the club’s books, with former Brazil star Robinho already among the playing staff.

Other internationals at Sivasspor include Carl Medjani, Arouna Kone, Gabriel Torje and Douglas.

Whether Bolt would be interested in joining Sivasspor is not yet clear.

Bolt recently revealed that he had ‘received offers from many clubs’, but hinted that his hopes of landing his dream deal may be fading.

He added: ‘I will make a decision at the end of November. Either I will continue or I will end my dreams. This is not about money. This is my dream.’

Should the deal see the light of the day, Bolt may in the course of the season file out against Onazi who was left out in the AFCON qualifier at the FNB Stadium where Super Eagles pulled a draw against Bafana Bafana but still picked a ticket to the 2019 event in Cameroon with a game left against Seychelles in March.

Onazi plays for Trabzonspor who currently occupy the 10th position on the log just a point above Sivasspor

  • Onazi to lead Eagles as Rohr names squad

  • Super Eagles will be ready for pre-World Cup friendlies – Onazi

Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has assured that the Super Eagles of Nigeria would be ready to put in their best in pre-World Cup friendlies against the DR Congo, England and the Czech Republic.

Onazi noted that the team is focused on playing all teams, and not picking special interest in one.

“We are not focusing on any particular game, and we are getting ready to face all the teams we have to play before the World Cup. It is the right mentality to approach the games.

“I have been asked several questions about the match against England, but I have been telling people that the England match is very important, just like the other matches that we have to play.

“What is key for us is to get into the right psychological state to confront every opposition that lie ahead, including those that will be waiting at the FIFA World Cup,” Onazi who plays for Trabzonspor of Turkey Sid to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

The former FIFA Under-17 World Cup silver medal-winning midfielder dismissed feelings that the team would be over-confident going into Russia 2018 following victories in friendlies against Argentina and Poland.

“There is nothing like over-confidence. What I can say is that we are a very ambitious team and we will always be ready to play any team.

“Yes, we defeated Argentina and Poland, but that has not in any way generated feelings of over-confidence in the camp. We are focused and have our heads on our shoulders.

“For us, humility and hard work will be the winning words going ahead. Our preparation is going on well and we are happy with that.

“At the World Cup, we will come up against different teams with different styles and approaches of play. It is important that we are adequately prepared and we appreciate the games that the NFF has lined up for us,” Onazi, who played for Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, said.

Nigeria host the Leopards of the DR Congo in Port Harcourt on May 28, before a prestige clash with England’s Three Lions at Wembley Stadium in London on June 2.

They will thereafter go on to have an encounter with the Czech Republic on June 6 at the Rudolf Tonn Stadium, just outside Vienna.

  • OGENYI Onazi: Flexibility makes me a betterplayer

Nigeria defensive midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, sat down with FIFA.com to talk about himself and hope for the Super Eagles as the world count down to the World Cup in Russia.

Ogenyi Onazi exhibits a personality that is taller than him. A member of the Nigeria World Cup team to Brazil 2014, the 25-year- old has had his fair share of ups and downs – very much like the Super Eagles. For much of the four years since Onazi made his FIFA World Cup debut with Nigeria, things have been somewhat trying while wearing the green-white brand. After equalling their best-ever finish by reaching the Brazil 2014 Round of 16, serious stumbles followed for the then reigning African champions.

But for injury, the Trabzonspor of Turkey star player has always stood tall in central midfield for Nigeria and after appearing in all four games for Nigeria in Brazil World Cup, it was not easy for any national team coach to ignore him again.

In the past, the petite player would have been written off as too slight to cope with the rigours of being a dynamic figure in the midfield. However, he and the likes of Frenchman N’Golo Kante are disproving the notion that size matters. “Football today is beyond size, weight and physique. Most important is to try to be fit in every aspect of life.”

That versatility is complemented by an enthusiasm he radiates both on and off the field. “I’m just trying to do things the way I feel it’s right and I believe so much in personality and trying to be someone who is going to make people happy. This is my objective in life: To make people happy and to make sure that they have hopes that things are going to be better in life,” he explained.

After failing to qualify for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in over 40 years, they were at a low ebb. “At that moment we had a lot of trouble in the country with the federation, between the players, and there was a lot of confusion in the team,” Onazi admitted to FIFA.com.

So, for fans to see their beloved Nigeria grouped with Africa’s current cup holders Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia on the road to Russia, doubts unsurprisingly bubbled – but not in the dressing room.

“We didn’t give up because we had the opportunity to prove we were really a team and we were able to make it,” the midfielder recalled, having topped their qualifying group in style. “We just told ourselves we have to do this for everybody; we gave all our hearts from day one to the very last.”

    The Eagle’s heartbeat

Heart is very much something the Trabzonspor man brings to the Super Eagles side, pulling on the captain’s armband a number of times. Operating within Nigeria’s core, his boundless energy provides a rapid beat to their midfield and, when mixed with a steely determination, it creates a frustrating cocktail for opponents to contend with both offensively and defensively.

In the past, the 25-year-old would have been written off as too slight to cope with the rigours of being a dynamic figure in the midfield.

“For me, this is about modern football. Modern football is: if you can be there before your opponent, that’s the most important thing. [Central midfield] is one of the most difficult positions in football because you determine how the game is going to be played – fast or slow – and how it unfolds tactically.”

Adept around the field, this partly dates back to 2009 when his Nigeria side strode to the FIFA U-17 World Cup final. “When I was growing up, I used to play as an attacker, from the right or left wing, or even as a striker. In the under-17s, when I played with Coach John Obuh I played virtually all positions – it was only the goalkeeping position I didn’t play [laughs].”

That is why these fallow few years hurt so much, and qualification meant the world to Onazi and his team-mates. “It was a really good moment for us. We had to celebrate it very well with our captain John Mikel Obi.”

    Russian reunions

With the tournament closing in fast and preparations already well underway – a 1-0 win over Poland was soured somewhat with a 2-0 defeat by Serbia last week – their Group D opponents are quickly coming into focus. While European duo Iceland and Croatia will propose stiff tests, a reunion with Argentina is the real eye-catcher.

Having felt the sting of a thrilling 3-2 defeat four years ago, Onazi is intent on not succumbing to La Albiecelste again. “What cannot kill you makes you stronger,” he said defiantly. “This is the mentality we want to use. The true Argentina is one of the best in the world and it’s not going to be easy.

“When you do something, you try to learn from what you’ve done to be better, so we’ve learned from our mistakes in Brazil and now it’s time for us to correct them and do the best we can.”

Should Onazi manage to convert his heart and commitment into three points against Leo Messi and Co., that life objective of making others happy will be able to be checked off for another day, as he’ll likely hear the cheers from Abuja all the way in Saint Petersburg.
