    We will qualify — Onazi

Ogenyi Onazi insists that Nigeria can qualify for the second round of the World Cup despite an unexpected draw against Iran.

The Super Eagles failed to find a way past the resolute defending of the Iranians to finish with the first 0-0 draw of the tournament, but Onazi is confident all hope is not lost.

“We are not happy we didn’t win, but that’s football,” Onazi told KickOffNigeria.com.

“We wanted to win but that didn’t happen. It doesn’t make it any more difficult. If we win the next two games, we will, qualify from the group.

“That is what we have to do,” he added.

Nigeria’s next game is against Bosnia Herzegovina in Cuiaba, with the winner if that game expected to join Argentina in the next round.

    Onazi escapes Jos bomb blasts

Nigeria international Ogenyi Onazi has said he feels fortunate to be alive after he narrowly avoided last week’s bombings in the Nigerian city of Jos.

The blasts at a crowded bus terminal and market killed at least 118 people.

Onazi, 21, who was born in Jos, had just left the popular Jos Main Market last Tuesday, when the first blast rocked the area.

The midfielder, who plays for Italian Serie A side Lazio, said: “I am very, very lucky, just by the grace of God.”

Onazi is now with the Nigeria squad in London as they prepare for tonight’s friendly against Scotland and he said he has been struggling to erase the memories of t   utes later when we heard the loud blast from the place. And suddenly, people were just running.

“There was chaos and pandemonium. There was smoke, I was confused, lost and just wondered what had happened. I had no idea what was going on and it was scary.

“All my life I have never heard a bang or boom like that.”

The second blast killed some of the rescue workers who had rushed to the scene, which was obscured by billows of black smoke.

A week later, far away from the city where his parents are based and preparing for his first World Cup with the Super Eagles, Onazi insists the unrest back home has made it difficult to focus on football.

“Some will say I should be happy to be alive but I just feel concerned about the security challenges in Jos and Nigeria as a country,” he said.

“I was born and bred in a peaceful Jos. I may be fortunate enough to live outside the place right now, but I still have my family and friends who live in the city.

“I always get worried when there are reports of terrible incidents there on a regular basis. It’s sad and depressing to live with this.  Personally, I think there is a need for a holistic approach to solving this problem once and for all.

“Innocent people are dying and the government seriously needs to step up security across the country.”

Another blast happened in Jos days after that incident, in an explosion that targeted football fans watching the European Champions League final, the authorities said.

At least three people died and three others were injured in the blast, according to Chris Olakpe, the Commissioner of Police for Plateau State.

Edy Reja, Ogenyi Onazi’s manager at Lazio, has challenged the Super Eagles midfielder and some of his other team mates to become more productive for the side.

Reja, who took over from Serbian coach, Vladimir Petkovic, was clear about those he expects to improve.

“I’d like to see improvement in terms of football and character. We are a work in progress and above all there are many young players behind the old guard” Reja said

“I expect a lot more from them over the next six months, especially Onazi, Felipe Anderson and Keita Balde”

Onazi had made the breakthrough into the full Lazio side, after playing only in the Cup games early last season.

Lazio boss fumes: Onazi, mates lack confidence

Lazio manager Vladimir Petkovic has admitted that Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi and mates are making too many mistakes following their 4-1 defeat to Hellas Verona last weekend.

The Nigerian international was in action last weekend but the Biancocelesti have won one league match in their last nine outings, and Petkovic claims that while his team are dominating games and creating plenty of goalscoring opportunities, they lack a cutting edge in the final third.

“I saw a few difficulties, but we conceded the first two goals on set plays,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“We dominated this game and created many chances, so it is absurd to lose like this. It’s incomprehensible, as we played better than Verona.

“This season we created so much and took home so little. We’ve got to make more of our chances. We make too many mistakes both in attack and defence, so at the moment we are lacking in confidence.”

Onazi’s Lazio are currently 10th in the Serie A table.

Meanwhile, Onazi’s manager will leave the Serie A outfit in the coming days after the Swiss Football Association confirmed that Petkovic will succeed Ottmar Hitzfeld after the World Cup.

The 50-year-old, who is expected to be axed by Lazio over the next 24 hours, has put pen to paper on a contract with the national side.

Petkovic has been handed a contract from July 2014 until the end of 2015. That deal will be extended if he gets the country to Euro 2016.

  • Ogenyi Onazi loving life in Lazio

Ogenyi Onazi loving life in Lazio

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, says he’s truly living his dream life in the cosy Italian city of Parma.
Speaking exclusively to The Nation Sports & Style recently, the Parma FC midfielder reflected on his career and life in the ancient city and noted that he’s enjoying every bit of life in the ‘beautiful city’.
Hear him: “When I got to Lazio I was put in Team B, so I had to work very hard in training and on the pitch to achieve lots of strength and stability in the team. I was desperate for success and everybody in the team knew. I was quite young at that time and knew that to command regular shirt would be tough. I knew the only way to achieve my dream of first team shirt was to be committed and dedicated. So when I got the opportunity I was able to justify the first team shirt. I was born to play and be great. I love the club and the cosy life in Lazio. The city is also beautiful. The fans and the management of the club are fantastic and I have never regretted my life in the team because I am already living my dream.”
Onazi, for many that do not know him too well, is a ‘promised child’.
Until recently when he became a household name being sought by Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi, to hold his midfield alongside Mikel Obi, Onazi was a youngster in the colours of My People FC; a youth team put together by televangelist TB Joshua.
While Onazi was a key player in Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations’ victory, this was not the first time that the 20-year-old has been brought to public attention. In fact, few players have been raised and developed with such expectation and anticipation as Onazi. His progress has long been a subtle narrative for Nigerians.
Onazi and his compatriot, Sani Emmanuel, were selected for the Nigerian U17 team before long and soon earned moves to Europe, and to Italian giants, Lazio.
Since the transfer, Onazi has flourished, and at the time of writing this piece has taken his game to the national level. Onazi, who has identified Chelsea as an ideal future home, speaks on other issues. Excerpts:
    Flying high with Eagles
I will like to say I have been so fortunate to maintain my regularity in the national team. It was not that I am perfect in commanding regular shirts but I think God has been so helpful to me not only in Super Eagles but in my career generally. I came into the national team with passion and visions and I thank God my dreams are perfectly coming through.
    Patience in career
My career generally has something to do with time. I endured a lot with prayer and determination to get to this level of my career. It took me lots of patience because I have believed in God’s time, which is the best. During my endurance, I tried as much to learn a lot of things in the game and also held my determination to be a better player. So I would like to say, the awaited time of God is paving ways to my success at the moment.
    Afcon glory
I was born to be a champion. I will forever be a living champion because I have been ordained to live, conquer and be successful. I went to South Africa with a huge confidence. But I never disclosed it to anybody. The game of football is about one philosophy; you must not doubt your mind, the moment you doubt your faith, it will definitely shake off. I went to the tournament with big faith of winning. Even when critics started kicking against the team, my faith was intact. I had that belief that Eagles would conquer in South Africa and it became stronger when we beat Cote’d’ Ivoire. I see the Ivoirians as the tournament’s main threat to the Super Eagles and we handled the game well. That was when our critics started believing that we could go all the way to win the trophy.
    God-made
When you work in God’s directions and obey his commandment, you are bound for greatness. I am God-made because I dedicate everything I have to him because he has been wonderful to me at every point of my career. The first thing I do on waking up is to praise his name before any other thing. And I always see that effect in my daily activities because I have put him before anything.
    Making waves in Lazio
When I got to Lazio I was put in Team B, so I had to work very hard in training and on the pitch to achieve lots of strength and stability in the team. I was desperate for success and everybody in the team knew that. I was quite young at that time and knew that to command a regular shirt would be tough. I knew the only way to achieve my dream of first team shirt was to be committed and dedicated. So when I got the opportunity I was able to justify the first team shirt.
I was born to play and be great. I love the club and the cosy life in Lazio. The city is also beautiful. The fans and the management of the club are fantastic and I have never regretted my life in the team because I am already living my dream.
    Onazi, the midfielder
I improve with every action tasted in Lazio and that is the magic of my game. I work hard to play better than my last game. I don’t believe I can’t do anything my mates are doing. I think it is a general thing in a footballer’s career; the more you play, the better you become intelligently. Consistency has really paid off for me because I find joy mostly on the pitch especially when I am doing my job well. However, I am not yet there because there are many great footballers in the world today, that is why I am not resting on my oars. I am taking my game higher, higher and higher every day. As a midfielder, you must be dynamic in your style of play and let your team mates feel your impact either in defending or offence; so I am putting lots of creativity into my games.
     Positivity
I love living a positive life even in the world of negativity. I am always positive.
    Off the pitch
I play snooker to unwind. I can never get tired of it. It is another great game that I love with a passion. I play the game well and my teammates know I’m really good at it.

COPPA ITALIA FINAL: Onazi, Lazio mates receive threats

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi is believed to be among several Lazio players that have received messages by telephone threatening their safety if they fail to lose the Italian Cup final, according to the club’s media manager Stefano De Martino.

Lazio will meet Roma at the Olympic Stadium today in what will be an historic first Italian Cup final between the sides.

The match has been placed under high security following violent incidents which marred their last league derby barely two months ago.

De Martino told a press conference the club had “reported the threats to the authorities” but that there had been “no developments since”.

Roma finished sixth in Serie A when the league finished last week, with Lazio in seventh.

Although neither side qualified for the Europa League, victory today offers a spot in next season’s competition.
