    Etebo relishes difficult derby victory

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has expressed his delight at Genclerbirligi’s home win over Ankaragucu in last weekend’s  local derby.

The Nigerian said  he was  looking forward to another win in their next league game this weekend.

It was all smiles for Etebo and his team Genclerbirligi as they earned a valuable 1-0 derby win over rivals Ankaragucu in the Turkish Lig. 1 as he emerged as The-Man-Of-The-Match on a wet Saturday night.

Genclerbirligi and Etebo would end the game with the maximum three points in the bag despite several attempts at increasing the tally while Ankaragucu also tried to grab a point in the engaging encounter at the Eryaman Stadium, Ankara.

“First of all, I’m very happy about this game especially winning it because it is important for everyone and it’s a derby,” Etebo told journalists.

Etebo  was modest as he emphasised that being rated as the Man-of -The-Match would definitely motivate him more at bringing his A-Game to every game.

“Well for me,  every game is important until the end of season” he declared, “and Yeah, next game is an away game, I’m already motivated already from the derby win.”

The 29 year-old who was out of football action for a season due to an injury has now enjoyed 13 straight starts at his club missing no single league game since the season began in July.

  • Ajayi, Etebo shine as West Brom, Stoke City seal victories

Super Eagles duo of Semi Ajayi and Oghenekaro Etebo were not on target on Saturday, but the two Nigerians who were in 90 minutes action for their English Championship sides, West Brom and Stoke City, contributed in no small measure as the clubs won in style.

While Ajayi’s West Brom went on a goal rampage flooring Cardiff 4-2, Etebo’s Stoke ran away with a 2-1   victory over Swansea City playing away notwithstanding.

But for Danny Ward who grabbed consolation  brace for visiting  Cardiff, West Brom were on the verge of stepping off the pitch with four goals and three points in the kitty.

Although  Stoke got baptism of fire conceding in the first minute of the match thanks to Ghana international André Ayew,  Etebo and  his teammates rather than getting demoralised by the early goal, saw it as a challenge battling their hosts all the way.

The fight to the finish approached paid off in the 22nd and 90th minutes respectively as Sam Clucas and Scott Hogan found the net.

West Brom will next take on Middleborough while Stock Welcome Fulham. Interestingly Ajayi and Etebo will be missing those matches billed for next Saturday, having been named in super Eagles squad to face Samba Boys of Brazil in faraway Singapore on October 13.

Italy–based defender William Ekong and England-based midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo are expected to lead the delegation of Super Eagles’ players into Dnipro for Saturday’s friendly against Ukraine.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles are expected to take on the host country’s senior team on Tuesday in an international friendly match.

It is the first outing for the three-time African champions since they finished third at the first–ever 24-team Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Egypt from June to July.

Goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, defenders Olaoluwa Aina, Chidozie Awaziem, Ekong, Leon Balogun and Jamilu Collins, as well as midfielders Alex Iwobi and Etebo were in Egypt.

There were also forwards Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu and Samuel Kalu.

But there would be excitement about a rash of new faces alongside a couple of returnees.

Defenders Bryan Idowu and Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, and Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho are back after being overlooked for the Africa Cup.

Germany–based goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, midfielder Joseph Aribo of Scottish club Glasgow Rangers and forwards Joshua Maja (France) and Emmanuel Dennis (Belgium) are hitting the camp for the first time.

Saudi Arabia–based team captain Ahmed Musa however pulled out of the trip on Thursday night as a result of injury which has failed to heal as quickly as he expected.

  • Nigeria can’t afford to fail — Oghenekaro Etebo

Nigerian midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo says the Super Eagles “cannot afford to fail” in their return to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The West African heavyweight nation won the tournament in 2013 but failed to qualify for the subsequent two editions in 2015 and 2017.

Under manager Gernot Rohr they will return to the finals later this month when they take on Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar in Group B in Egypt.

“This is a special Nations Cup. We have missed two editions and that means the whole of the continent will be looking at us to redeem our image. So we cannot afford to fail. The last time we were there, we left as champions in 2013, so this is the first opportunity to take part in the competition for many of us,” Etebo told the Stoke Sentinel.

  • OGHENEKARO ETEBO: Life in Championship with Stoke is tough

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo is undoubtedly a grass to grace story but dint of hard work has kept him on the top of the rack for both club and country, reports TAIWO ALIMI.

Nigeria and Stoke midfielder Ogenekaro Etebo is already burning with a desire to give back to his society within a few years of breaking into the main Super Eagles team.

The passion to give back to Nigerian youngsters through his foundation: Etebo Ogenekaro Peter Foundation (EOPF), according to him, is borne out of the tough times he had while growing up in the rough terrain of Warri, Delta State.

For 23-year-old Etebo, his rise to stardom is truly phenomenal. Though, born in Lagos, he returned home for his primary and secondary school education in Warri where he began his youth career with Lord Honour FC in 2011. It was here that Warri elite side Warri Wolves spotted him and signed him up in 2012. He made his debut for the Premiership division in the 2013 league season and within two seasons he had become a household name not only in Warri but all over the country.

A strong playmaker, Etebo often steals into the box to score vital goals. The late Stephen Keshi, the then Super Eagles coach, could not keep his eyes away for long, as he was invited to the Super Eagles in 2014 in a qualification match towards the 2014 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

From there he was invited to the U-23 Dream Team by Samson Siasia where he was able to show his full potential and helped the team win the U-23 Nations Cup and qualify for the football event of the 2016 Olympic Games. In fact, he scored the winning goal in the final.

At Rio Olympic, Etebo blossomed emerging as the highest goal scorer of the tournament and helped Nigeria take home the football bronze.

In search of a strong holding midfielder, the current Super Eagles coach, Gernor Rohr, looked up to him at the last World Cup and he played in all three matches of Nigeria, leaving Russia with impressive records. FIFA credited him with five of the best statistics at the end of the tournament.

According to a breakdown of the top performers’ at Russia 2018, the Nigerian international emerged the best in five categories: Most take-ons completed (16), most fouls won (11), most shots (7), joint chances created (5) and second most tackles won (11).

Etebo left Russia as Nigeria’s most successful young revelation. Though he had signed a 6.35m Euro deal with Stoke City (a Championship side) before the World Cup, his performance in Russia would have attracted even better suitors.

He went on to win Stoke City Player of the Year award at the end of his first season at the club.  Etebo returned to his birth place: Lagos, last week and was guest of Surulere Local Government (Sportcity) where he gave a pep-talk to more than a hundred youths drawn from the local government area.

The midfielder dug into his bag of experience while toiling the streets of Nigeria in order to achieve a childhood dream of making it big in professional football to encourage them not to give up their dreams.

He told them: “It is good to have talent, but hard work will beat talents any day. You have to go the extra miles and ensure you give your best whenever you are called upon, put God first because he is the Alpha and Omega, be determined, and be disciplined.

“I started out from the ghetto in Warri. If I could go all the way to Europe, you can also do better with time, commitment, hard work and God on your side.”

Meanwhile, the  former Warri Wolves’  combative and creative playmaker here shares some success tips and expectations at the forthcoming 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

    Why I’m giving back

The idea to use my foundation to reach out to Nigerian youngsters is a well thought-out one. I’ve used the foundation as an opportunity to reach out to many youth players and what I tell them is not different from what I’ve told those that gathered at Surulere local government auditorium  to listen to me. It is good to have talent, but hard work will beat talent any day. You have to go the extra miles and ensure you give your best whenever you are called upon, put God first because he is the Alpha and Omega, be determined, and be disciplined. I started out from the ghetto in Warri. If I could go all the way to Europe, you can also do better with time, commitment, hard work and God on your side.

I made them to understand that I was like many of them just a few years ago. And that is why I came up with this idea of Etebo Ogenekaro Peter Foundation so that I can be a living example to the many youth who want to give up now. I know how it feels because I went through it. I struggled and at a point our parents could not afford to pay our school fees too. It feels particularly bad when you see other students who have paid. Certainly, there are doctors, lawyers and other professionals that will spring forth from this gathering, because life is not all about football. But, all I am saying is that don’t give up your dreams because times are hard. I did not give up and that is why I am playing for the national team today.

    Growing up

Growing up in Warri was exactly not an easy thing. I can identify with many struggling families and youngsters. While growing up, sometimes, I would have to get into the pitch without the correct items such as good boots or even good food. Going to school was even a hard thing for me and my siblings. I remember vividly when my sister and I were sent home due to the fact that our parents didn’t have the capacity to pay. I share that sad plight. I was once in that shoe and I have remained grateful to God for the turnaround and that is why I want to keep giving back to the community that produced me and humanity at large.

In their own little way, my parents encouraged me and gave me the backup to go all the way and I’m grateful to them that they were there for me when I needed them.

    Education and football

I am committed to holding a summer camp in Nigeria after the Africa Nations Cup in Egypt. The “Summer Camp with Etebo” will allow many kids to play on the same pitch with me. Importantly, I’m going to talk to them about education and football. Now I have the opportunity of playing football and the privilege to represent the national team, but education is a vital tool to securing a brighter future even after football.

    AFCON 2019

I know a number of my teammates and management of my club (Stoke City) will be looking up to me to do well on the international stage when the Africa Cup of Nations gets underway later this month. Stoke is a fantastic club and they make you feel at home at every point in time. After our last game, I was put on the spot and celebrated as a send-off to the African Nations Cup. They are happy that I’m going to Egypt and play ing in the colours of Nigeria.

This is a special Nations Cup. We have missed two editions and that means the whole of the continent will be looking on to us to redeem our image. So we cannot afford to fail. The last time we were there we left as Champions in 2013, so this is the first opportunity to take part in the competition for many of us. We have a young but experienced team with the World Cup and many victories behind us. We have a manager (Gernor Rohr) who is like a father and knows his onion. We also cannot to be complacent even though we are in what looks like an easy group against Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi. In modern football, there is no easy game because many African players now have players all over Europe and they would definitely be bringing something to the table.

    Life at Stoke City

We did not have an easy ride in the ended season. The notion that the Championship is easy is a false one. It is as difficult as the premiership and there are many quality players there too. At a point we indeed struggled but our strength lies in unity that permeates within the team, coaching crew and management levels. Unity and togetherness is so important and that helped us to stay afloat.

Also, I must take this opportunity to say to the supporters that they have been so good over the past few weeks and really helped us. I know it hasn’t been an easy time for them because they have expected a lot more from this season, but the support they have shown us has been really good.We need them behind us so much, and I know times have been tough but believe me, as a team, united together; we can achieve so much more success. If you want to be a strong team in this league then you must be solid together, you have to have a real togetherness within the dressing room and you have to have a unity with the supporters too. The Championship is relentless, and it is very difficult, but you see a lot of the teams who are successful have the unity behind them, which, for me, is so incredibly important. We have improved over the past couple of months; there is togetherness here now and what I should say to the supporters is that I really believe that long-term, we will not fail them.

At the end of the day I was adjudged the Stoke City player of the year and I must thank the club for that support. It is really inspiring and a good mentality to take to the Nations Cup.

    Transfer rumour

It is still early now to talk about that. I have a good relationship with Stoke and I am happy there.

  • OGHENEKARO ETEBO: Why I opted for Stoke City

World Cup revelation Oghenekaro Etebo speaks about his experience at the Mundial, and surprise move to relegated Stoke City with Taiwo Alimi.

Russia World Cup revelation Oghenekaro Peter Etebo has described his debut Mundial as a story of conquest and vanquish.

“Russia 2018 was a mixed blessing for me and many of us (Nigerian players) will feel the same way,” 22-year-old Stoke of England new sign-on started.

He continued: “We made our mark, even as we failed to progress to the knockout stage. We scored one of the best goals of the tournament through Musa Ahmed and played a vibrant attacking brand of football, even though we paraded the youngest squad at the tournament.”

He noted that being grouped in the ‘group of death’ at the Mundial did not stop them from exhibiting their game. “We (Super Eagles) rose to the occasion in spite of the fact that we were the least ranked team in FIFA world ranking, yet we beat Iceland and held our own against world No 5, Argentina.”

He added that it took a while for the team to come out the pains of World Cup ouster in the hands of Lionel Messi and gang. “We were determined to win that match or at worse get a draw. We were all downcast at the end of the match because we could have moved to the next stage. You should see us in the changing room. We could not say anything until the coach told us to be cheerful because we impressed him and our fans. Now we can look forward to the challenges ahead.”

Looking forward, Etebo is of the opinion that the current crop of Super Eagles will go places. “The World Cup experience is an important one and we have all leant from it. It is one experience that you cannot gain anywhere else and it would help me to hold my own anywhere I find myself.”

Etebo set a tournament record of the most dribbles completed in a game in 2018 FIFA World Cup group D encounter between Nigeria and Croatia, according to the stats compiled by Opta.

Even though the Super Eagles lost the game 2-0 to Croatia, Etebo set a record as he completed nine dribbles from nine attempts in the encounter.

The record, before it was broken by Belgium inspirational captain, Hazard, tallied with that of Brazilian star Neymar Jr and Isco of Spain. The PSG star player also completed nine dribbles against Serbia, same for Isco in their round of exit to Russia.

The midfielder was also voted among the best XI players after the first round of games alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Costa.

Speaking on the individual honours, the former Warri Wolves playmaker modestly replied that it was a win for the team and not him alone. “Given the opportunity to represent my country and to express myself, they (honours) are for the whole members of the team and not about myself alone. I am highly honoured to get the FIFA mention. We all played as a team and with our heart. It was a good World Cup for us, though we could have done better.”

He speaks further on growing and other sundry issues. Excerpts:

    FAMILY SUPPORT

I got the right support from my family. They didn’t stop me at anytime not to play football even when I was in my school days. Things began falling in the right path when I signed my first professional contract with Warri Wolves. Though, I have played for some grassroots teams in local competitions such as Oba Cup and the State FA Cup. Actually I was noticed by Warri Wolves while playing for Lord Honour FC and they asked me to sign for them. You would understand my joy because that is the biggest club in Warri and it is the dream of many youngsters to play for them.

That move paid off for me as scouts for the national team noticed me especially after scoring a couple of goals and making my presence felt in the midfield. I got some awards too, like the Glo Wondergoal award for the best goal of the 2014-2015 NPFL season and other local awards for playing well in the team. This was closely followed up by the Golden Boot in Africa Cup of Nations (U-23), and Most Promising Talent of the Year award at the CAF Awards.

Aside from the passion I have for the game, I also have the support of my family and of course God, who is my biggest motivator.

    A BELEIVER

I am a believer and I must give credit for my growing achievements to the grace of God. All the moments through my football career have been special. I’m still hoping to get the best and even though I’m happy now, with my moments, I’m still counting on the bigger ones ahead.

If I was told that I would make such great impact at the World Cup, I would doubt that person, but when Coach (Gernot) Rohr told me that I would play in the first game I told myself that I must put in my all. With the load of talents we have in the team, it is inspiring to even get a look in.

I’ve always believed in myself. What you tell yourself will only lift you up or bring you down so I’ve always believed in myself and that is why wherever I am playing, you will always see my game.

    WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE

The Argentina match was one of the toughest games of my career. The result didn’t go our way, however. I am truly honoured and blessed to have this experience. To represent my country at a World Cup competing with the best players in the world at my age was a dream come true.

Before that game when we defeated Iceland it gave us the right mentality that we could go all the way. That we could beat Argentina, but things did not quite work that way. However, we are happy about the victory.  It is important that we give our fans something for keeping faith in us and supporting us. That win was for the whole of Nigeria! It is our way of saying thank you to all the supporters for keeping the faith, and continuing to believe in us. The World Cup is very important, not only for me as a player, but for all Nigerians. I have said before that we should not just go there to mess ourselves up. I am happy that we did not mess up and there are moments that our fans can look back to and smile.

    STOKE MOVE

I feel great. I am finally here and I really appreciate the support and the welcome that everybody has given to me. Everybody needs a break after a tournament like the World Cup, but my mind has been here. I knew that I was coming to Stoke City and I was excited about it.

I spoke to a lot of friends about the move and the tradition of this club appealed to me – everybody knows that this is a big club, even though we suffered relegation last season.

It is important for us to do well this season, to make sure that everything goes well in the future. But I know how difficult a challenge this will be.

I had a lot of options this summer from the Premier League, but I signed this deal before I went to the World Cup, and I am happy with that. I did that because of the relationship and the conversations I had. I was happy with what was said – if I wasn’t then I wouldn’t have come to Stoke City.

I believe that we are going to make this a great season. I am going to give my best and hopefully that will be enough for the club.

Nigeria Drops Moses, Mikel for Nations Cup Qualifiers, Invites Youssef

Nigeria have left out Chelsea star Victor Moses from their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa next month.

Captain John Obi Mikel is also among the high-profile names missing in the squad list released by Super Eagles Coach, Genort Rohr for the match against South Africa.

Moses is being omitted despite having a splendid season with Chelsea while Mikel is understood to still be recuperating from an injury setback that has forced him undergo surgery,

Also conspicuously missing from the list of 23 players are the China-based duo of Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye.

MFM FC strike partners, Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun, have also been overlooked as Rohr takes a gamble with a lot of fresh inclusion in his list.

Rio 2016: Dream Team beat Sweden 1-0

Nigeria’s Dream Team on Sunday progressed to the quarter-finals at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament of Rio 2016 after a 1-0 victory over Sweden in Group B.

According to reports, Sadiq Umar header in the 40th minute at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus ensured maximum six points from two games.

For a large part of the match both sides played conservatively, but it was Nigeria who looked more threatening in attack.

Fresh from scoring four goals last time out, Oghenekaro Etebo attempted several shots in the half — with his right foot, left foot and with his head.

But he was unable to get the better of Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Linde, who seemed well prepared for him.

Nigeria eventually found the opener six minutes from time, when Stanley Amuzie delivered a pinpoint, curling cross in open play from the left wing which found Umar.

The AS Roma player made no mistake, scoring with a diving header for the African under-23 champions.

They continued their dominance in the second half, with captain Mikel Obi firing a well-driven shot from the top of the area, which was well saved by Linde.

The Swedish goalkeeper had to be alert four minutes later when Etebo dribbled inside the corner of the penalty box and attempted a curling effort, but Linde once again saved.

Coach Hakan Ericson used all three of his substitutes — Ken Sema, Muamer Tankovic and Jacob Une Larsson – to try and give his team a new dimension.

But, in the end, Nigeria’s backline was up to the challenge and held on for all three points.

On Wednesday, Nigeria will close out group play against Colombia in Sao Paulo.

Sweden meanwhile have a must-win match ahead against Japan in Salvador if they are going to continue their Rio 2016 journey.

    * To play Sweden on Sunday

Nigeria showed why they are heralded as one of the best soccer nations in world football with a tidy 5-4 win against Japan at the ongoing 2016 Rio Olympics.

It was an incredible scene inside the Amazonia Arena in Manaus as four goals were scored inside the first ten minutes of the encounter.

The Dream Team VI were expected to be affected by jet-lag having arrived Brazil just few hours before the game but showed no signs of fatigue as they scored the first goal though Sadiq Umar who coolly finished a rebound after the goalkeeper parried an Imoh Ezekiel’s shot into his path. Japan earned a penalty just a minute later when Stanley Amuzie brought down an onrushing striker and Shinzo Koroki finished with aplomb but the drama continued as Nigeria restored their lead courtesy Oghenekaro Etebo who swept in the ball past Masatoshi Kushibiki in goal off superb a superb cross from Abdullahi Shehu. The Asian side again levelled scores at 2-2 from the restart at Koroki played a through ball to Takumi Minamino who made no mistake with his finish, all these happened inside the first ten minutes of the pulsating encounter.

Stanley Amuzie trying to make amends for causing a penalty fired in a ferocious shot but it was parried for a corner. Mikel took the resultant corner and Umar connected a header but it went wide.

However,Nigeria went into the break with the lead as Etebo again scored after fine work by Umar played him in.

The dream team came into the second half renewed and it was no surprise they made it 4-2 when Umar was bought down in the penalty area and Etebo stepped up to finish for his hat-trick goal.Etebo made an early entry for the player of the tournament with a fourth goal to make it 5-2 but the Japanese reduced the deficit as arsenal new boy Takuma Asano scored his side third.

Musashi Suzuki netted a fourth goal but the dream team VI held on for a vital win.

Nigeria shot to the top of Group B with three point while Colombia and Sweden have a point each after they drew 2-2
