  • Agent ‘dupes’ house seekers of N16m

    AN Ogudu Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 59-year-old estate agent, Joseph Olatunji, in prison for allegedly defrauding 46 accommodation seekers of N16 million.

    Magistrate Bukola Mogaji did not take the defendant’s plea after arraignment by the police.

    The court also refused the defendants bail.

    Magistrate Mogaji ordered him remanded in prison until August 23.

    Olatunji is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretence and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Donjour Perezi said the defendant and others at large committed the offence in March and July at Abeni Close, Asa Estate, Ifako Gbagada, Lagos.

    He alleged that Olatunji defrauded his victims on the pretext of providing them accommodation.

    Perezi alleged that the defendant obtained N16 million cumulatively from Sandrah Obushe and 45 others, with a promise to provide them apartments, but failed to do so.

    The prosecutor said by his action, the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

    He said Mrs. Obuseh later discovered that the defendant deceived her, as there was no apartment to lease out.

  • Court sentences two to eight years imprisonment for theft

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court Thursday sentenced a man and a woman to eight years’ imprisonment for burglary and theft of phones, jewelries and other items valued at N340, 000.

    The convicts, Hammed Waheeb, 32, and Rasheedat Ogunmade,  of no fixed address, upon arraignment, had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing before Magistrate Bukola Mogaji .

    While Waheeb was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment without an option of fine on the three counts charge, Rasheedat bagged three years for same offence.

    Magistrate Mogaji said their conviction and sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

    Prosecuting Inspector (Insp.)  Lucky Ihiehie, had earlier told the court that the convicts stole a Gionee phone valued at N120, 000, a wristwatch worth N30, 000, jewelries worth N180,000, and N10, 000,” property of one Mrs. Bilikisu Ogunsanya.

    He said the offence was committed in May at about 2.00 p.m. on Ganiu Rabiu Close, Ketu, Lagos.

    He said that they broke into the house of Mrs. Ogunsanya, with the aid of an iron bar to break her door open and stole her cell phones and jewelries.

  • Two held over cultism

    Two men, Michael Hastrup, 24, and Bamilare Afolabi, 21,  were on Thursday arraigned at an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for alleged membership of a cult known as “Eiye Confraternity.”

    Prosecuting Inspector Lucky Ihiehie said the defendants committed the offence on March 19 at Ferry, Oworonshoki, Lagos.

    He alleged that on that day, some policemen  arrested Hastrup, who had been on the wanted list of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oworonshoki Division.

    “Hastrup was sighted at Ferry and upon information, the police raided the place and arrested him with Afolabi, who was in possession of Indian hemp,” Ihiehie said.

    The duo pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate H. B. Mogaji granted them N200, 000 bail,  with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must live within the court’s jurisdiction and be employed.

    The case continues on November 20.

  • Man docked for stealing motorcycle

    A 29-year-old man, Joshua Udoh, was on Monday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a motorcycle, valued at N235,000.

    Udoh, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that Udo and others still at large, committed the offences on Dec. 28, 2018 at 11.00 p.m. at Owode Elede area of Mile 12, near Lagos.

    Ihiehie said that the defendant and his accomplices conspired to steal a Bajaj Boxer Motorcycle marked KTU 246 QH, belonging to one Mercy Ibok.

    He said the defendant was caught by men of the vigilance group in the area and handed over to the police.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted Udo bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Kubeinje ordered that the sureties should reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should show evidence of one year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until April 23 for further hearing.

  • Man arraigned for snatching iPhone at bus stop

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday granted bail in the sum of N50,000 to an unemployed man, who  allegedly snatched N46, 000 iPhone at a bus stop.

    Magistrate E. Kubeinje also ordered 28-year-old Olamide Adesoko to produce two sureties in like sum.

    She directed that the sureties must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of one year tax payment to the state government.

    The defendant, a resident of Adebimpe Street, Mile 12, Lagos State, was arraigned over alleged  conspiracy and  stealing which respectively contravene Sections 285 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. He, however, denied committing the offences.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, submitted that the defendant conspired with others still at large to snatch an iPhone worth N46, 000 from one Mr Tunde Ibrahim.

    Ihiehie told the court that the unemployed committed the offences on Feb 16. at 3.00p.m. at Mile 12 Bus Stop.

    He alleged that the defendant approached Ibrahim, claiming that he needed direction to a place.

    “Before the complainant knew what was happening, Adesoko held him and snatched his phone,” Ihiehie said.

    He said that Ibrahim saw the defendant two days later while attempting to defraud a woman.

    “He raised alarm, and people around caught him and handed him over to the police.’’

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stealing attracts three years’ imprisonment but stealing from one’s employer is punishable with seven years’ imprisonment, under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The case was adjourned until March 26 for mention.

  • 40-year-old admits stealing pepper

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Thursday remanded one 40-year-old Suraju Abubakar who pleaded guilty to stealing 70 bags of fresh pepper valued at N232, 700.

    The court ordered that Abubakar should be kept in prison pending review of the facts of the case and his sentencing.

    Abubakar was arraigned on a count charge of stealing, contrary to Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that one Mr Musa Usman from  Mile 12 Market, Ketu, Lagos, apprehended and brought the defendant to the Ketu Police Station on Feb.14.

    ”Usman alleged that the defendant entered his store at 6.30a.m. and made away with  the 70 bags of pepper,” Ihiehie said.

    The New  Agency  of  Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant pleaded guilty  and begged for leniency.

    The Magistrate,  Mrs E.  Kubeinje, reserved review of the facts of the case and sentencing for March 18.

  • Woman charged with placing fake job vacancy posters

    A 27-year-old woman, Ugochi Chinagorom, was yesterday arraigned before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly placing fraudulent job vacancy posters at strategic locations in Gbagada, Lagos, with intent to deceive.

    Chinagorom was charged before Magistrate E. Kubeinje with intent to obtain money under false pretence.

    Prosecuting Inspector Lucky Ihiehie said Dele Akinseleyin, a leader of Diya Street Vigilance Group, Ifako, Gbagada, reported the case at Ifako Police Station.

    He alleged that the defendant was caught at 12:45pm placing fraudulent job vacancy posters with the inscription ‘ED Sunshine’ Enterprises, Tel. No 08098941257, at strategic locations within Gbagada and its environs.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Kubeinje granted the accused N50,000 bail with one surety in the like sum, who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

    Kubeinje adjourned till March 3

  • Accused faces spare parts theft charge

    A 34-year-old man, Gift Osita, was yesterday brought before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing motor spare parts.

    Osita, whose residential address is not provided, is being tried on a two-count charge of stealing and unlawful possession.

    Prosecuting Inspector Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the accused committed the offence on February 12 at about 2pm, at Dominion Supermarket, Diya Street, Ifako, Gbagada, Lagos State.

    He alleged that the defendant stole spare parts of a car at a supermarket parking lot.

    Ihiehie said the complainant, Mr. Olubila Odushina, caught the defendant when he was about escaping with the stolen items and shouted.

    “When Osita was caught, he also had in his possession two Toyota saloon car chromes and a Honda CRV Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) chrome – values yet unknown,” he said.

    The prosecutor said the chromes found in the defendant’s possession were suspected to have also been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

    Osita pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate E. Kubeinje granted the defendant N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on March 20.

  • Artisan charged with stealing recharge cards of all networks

    A 22-year-old artisan, Opeyemi Shomuyiwa, on Monday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, over alleged theft of a hand bag containing two phones and N85,000 recharge cards of various networks.

    Shomuyiwa, a resident of Shogbamu Street, Bariga, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Police Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the accused stole a woman’s handbag containing the recharge cards, a Samsung phone valued at N 27,000 and an LG phone worth N45, 000.

    He said that the handbag also contained N15,000.

    Ihiehie submitted that the theft occurred on Nov. 8 at 6.05p.m. at 19, Church Street, Ifako, Gbagada, Lagos.

    He said the handbag belonged to one Mrs Ajagbe Ayodele who reported the case at the Ifako Police Station, Lagos.

    “On that day, the complainant was in her shop when the accused and one other, still at large, came pretending to buy bottles of water.

    “Suddenly, one of them grabbed the complainant’s daughter – Abigail – and hit her on the face and snatched the bag she was holding which contains the said items.

    “He then ran to catch up with the other who was on a waiting motorcycle but luck ran against them when a commercial driver, who had been watching them, knocked down their motorcycle as they were trying to escape.

    “The accused, who was the motorcycle rider, was apprehended while the other, who snatched the bag containing the said valuables, made away with them”, Ihiehie told the court.

    He noted that the offences contravened Section 287 (5) (A) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides for two years’ imprisonment for conspiracy.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje admitted the accused to N50, 000 bail and two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until Dec. 11 for mention.

  • Suspected cultist gets N50, 000 bail

    A 25-year-old man, Abdulmumini Oseni, who on Friday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to a cult known as ‘Eiye’ confraternity, had been granted bail.

    The accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.

    Oseni, who resides at Seriki Oro in Ikeja area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the offences were committed on Sept. 1 at about 4:00 a.m. at Gowon Estate, Egbeda Area of Lagos State.

    Oseni and three others now at large, invaded the complainants’ house with axe and cutlass and introduced themselves as ‘Eiye’ Confraternity members.

    According to the complainant, Mr Abubakar Ahmed, they told him that they came to treat his misdeeds.

    They said they fought against intimidation and that the complainant shouldn’t dare them.

    Ihiehie told the police that Oseni pointed a gun at the complainants head and told him to remove his clothes as they beat him up with belt, cable wire and inflicted severe injuries on his body.

    He said they (accused) used their phones to video the whole thing and later moved the complainant to an unknown place where he was forced to do a mobile transfer of N30, 000 into one of their accounts before they stopped beating him.

    The case was reported to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Gbagada, on Sept. 9 and the complainant told the police that he didn’t know the men but could be able to identify them.

    The offences contravened Sections 42 (9) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must show proof of means of livelihood with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government for two years.

    The case was adjourned until Nov. 11.
