  • Kajola dry port to create 40,000 jobs, says Ogun govt

Kajola dry port to create 40,000 jobs, says Ogun govt

Ogun State government has described the recently approved Kajola dry port as a game changer in the economy of the state.

It hoped that it would create at least 40,000 jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers.

The government assured stakeholders that their interests had been captured in the project, as the construction of the dry port would increase the internally generated revenue of the state, reduce transport and transaction costs and attract infrastructure and regional development projects, among others.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Olugbenga Dairo, while speaking with reporters in Abeokuta.

Dairo, who said efforts had reached advanced stage in actualising the envisioned dry port at Kajola, Papalanto in Ewekoro Local Government, said the government was determined to make Ogun Nigeria’s first investment and business destination.

He said the approval given to the state government by the federal government to develop the dry port followed its strategic identification in the state’s Multimodal Transportation Master Plan.

Tracing the origins of the project, the commissioner said: “In 2021, His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, directed us to put together a strategic Multimodal Transportation Master Plan for Ogun State.

“This, we did in conjunction with experts from the prestigious Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and support from the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (UKFCDO).

“We were very mindful of the aspirations of His Excellency on the economic and industrial development for the state, and so we deemed it critical to plan for an airport and a dry port.

“The airport is nearing completion, and our congruent plan is to develop a dry port that will receive goods from Apapa and Tincan dry ports.

“The good news is that we have got the Federal Government approval to develop, and we are not resting our oars on other processes towards this realisation.

“The proposed site has been satisfactorily assessed to be proximate to both the NRC narrow and standard gauge rail lines. It is a flat land good for a dry port, and there are Lafarge and Dangote cement factories within its catchment area.

“We are having constant engagements with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigeria Shippers Council, ICRC and recently, we visited the Nigeria Railway Corporation, Oyingbo, Lagos and engaged  the Commissioner for Police and Nigeria Civil Defence in that station, on the way forward.”

Speaking further, Dairo said Governor Abiodun, being a private sector person, who has operated in various international institutions, understands best practices and appreciates keen focus on policy development and project delivery, is promoting international best practices to make Ogun State the best destination for investors.

Law-abiding herdsmen, others welcome in Ogun – State govt

Ogun State government said on Wednesday all Nigerians, including herdsmen, are free to enter the state provided they are law -abiding.

The government also directed local government areas where there are herdsmen and farmers crises to embark on enumeration of residents and visitors to know the people in the area.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa,  stated these during chat with journalists  after the States’ Security Council meeting held at the Governor’s Office, Oke – Mosan, Abeokuta.

He also warned that the government would not hesitate to invoke the recently passed anti – land-grabbing law to curtail the menace of herdsmen in the state.

According to the SSG, the state government would strengthen its conflict resolution committee established in 2012 to make it achieve more success.

He said the government and security agencies would take a closer look at the activities of the trans-border pasturialists who were responsible for most of the attacks in the state.

“All Nigerians would be welcome in Ogun State but there are laws and rules that every stakeholder, every visitor, every herdsman and every farmer must comply with.

“The one that is very key in the packs of local laws is what we call the land grabber law but the correct title is Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Land and other Properties Law.

“The council also took note that this law already provides for most of the contemporary challenges that confronts us today as far as herdsmen, settlers and farmers are concerned.

“Council reaffirmed government determination to continue to fully implement this law which already prohibits forcible entry on lands.

“Council decided that for us in Ogun State, we want everybody from all parts of the country and even outside but we will continue to insist that our laws be respected and obeyed.

“Our existing conflict resolution committee is a standing committee that has been put in place since 2012 when the crisis first arose and we have decided to further strengthen the committee.”

The commissioner in the State Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Surajudeen Olusesi, spoke during the examination at the former Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta, the state capital

Olusesi said the examination was an entrance point for those seeking appointments into the civil service.

The commissioner said applicants for the examination cut across various cadres, adding that the successful ones would occupy vacant positions earlier indicated by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state civil service.

  • No monkey pox in Ogun – Govt

No monkey pox in Ogun – Govt

Ogun State government said on Tuesday there is no case of monkey pox in the state and described as shocking a report credited to Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), listing the state as one of the states affected by the disease.

The state Commissioner for Health, Babatunde Ipaye, told journalists in Abeokuta there is no case of monkey pox in the state.

He blamed the report on overzealous official of the state who informed the Federal Ministry of Health when the case has not been properly examined.

The commissioner said the particular officer from the state hospital in Ijebu Ode only noticed a skin lesion on a patient at the hospital and reported the case to NCDC.

He said the appearance of rashes on the patient was not suggestive of a monkey pox, adding that no due process was followed before the case was reported.

Ipaye said: “It was very surprising as the state commissioner for health and the chief epidemiologist of the state to hear that Ogun State was listed among states with cases of monkey pox. We have not recorded any confirmed case of monkey pox in the state, Ogun State doesn’t have a single case.

“Yes, there was an overzealous officer of the ministry who saw somebody with skin lesion in state hospital, Ijebu Ode and unfortunately called the Federal Ministry of Health and incidented suspected case.

“Any patient in the category of that patient that was incidented cannot be considered as a suspected case because the patient has another primary problem that can give rise to skin lesion, that is not a suspected case.

“Further questioning was even very revealing that the skin lesion the patient had was not even pathognomonic of monkey pox, it was not suggestive of monkey pox but more of another skin lesion and the screening negates the entire report itself.

“We are not averse to reporting one, if there is a case.  We are not willing to cover up a case but we must also not sent people panicking for things that we do not have.”

“Another 100 hectares of rice farm will be harvested at Iloti Ijebu within the next one month.

“The harvesting of rice will reduce the dependence of the state on imported rice and reduce its price in various markets,” he said.

Ademuyiwa also said the state government was working hard to solve the problems associated with clearing of farmland by making land available for agricultural purpose.

  • Ogun govt shares assets among local govts

The Ogun State government has shared assets and liabilities among the 20 local government areas and the newly created 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, spoke in Abeokuta, the state capital, while receiving the report of the asset-sharing committee, headed by the Permanent Secretary in the Local Government Service Commission, Mr Lateef Owodeyi.

The commissioner said it was imperative to share the assets among the LCDAs for effective and smooth running of their administrations.

He said: “The step became necessary to ensure that governance is taken to the grassroots and for the LCDAs to rise to the occasion in the reality of upholding local government administration.”

Ojuko hailed the committee for properly monitoring and supervising the asset distribution among the councils.

The commissioner recalled that the committee was set up to identify liabilities and assets, evaluate them and share them among the local government areas and their LCDAs, using the number of wards in each area.

He said this would facilitate the seamless take-off of the LCDAs, having put necessary machinery of government in place to ensure that dividends of democracy were promptly delivered to the residents across the state.

Ojuko said: “Let me commend this committee for a job well done. I am impressed by this report and I am sure that by this asset-sharing, our newly created LCDAs can kick off in earnest, having deployed the necessary and human resources to the councils earlier. “
