  • Osinbajo, Kukah, Abiodun: Religion has become divisive

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday lamented that religion has often been deployed to create division, spread hate and unleash violence on one another.

Osinbajo added that notwithstanding the negative use of religion, it still remained a veritable tool for a national and global development, stressing that the Federal Government would continue to use the mandate given by the people to cater for the welfare of the citizens.

The vice president spoke during the Ninth Toyin Falola annual international conference at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state.

The conference, put together by the institution, had “Religion, the state and global politics”, as its theme.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Registrar, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, also noted that religion in Nigeria has not been properly understood.

The vice president, who described the theme of the conference as germane to the prevailing situation in the country, said: “The Interface between religion and the state was limited to issue of secularism, secularisation and separation of power between state and religion.

“Contemporary scholarships have, however, noted that religion covertly or overtly, places more role in human and societal lives, than previously acknowledged.

“Religion is a veritable tool for a national and global development.

“On the other hand, religion has often been used or implicated as a divisive factor, often employed as instrument to spread hate and unleash violence over one another.

“It is therefore expected that this conference will make its finding available to the federal republic of Nigeria for the improvement for the welfare of all.”

Also speaking, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said many Nigerians wish the country well daily but expressed concern that there are also others who want to leave Nigeria on the supposition that they were not getting the best out of it.

Obasanjo, who was the distinguished guest of honour, said the country may not move forward if it continues to lose its identity to diversity.

The elder statesman who presented a paper titled: “Towards a re-unification of the sacred and secular: religious interventions in politics,” declared that both religious leaders and politicians are linked together.

He said: “You can’t take one and leave the other. You can’t take politics and leave religion and you can’t take religion and leave politics, they are together.

“It ought to be that way, politics without religion, I don’t know what you would call it; they both affect the welfare and the well-being of all of us as we live in life.

“As far as religion is concerned, there are two issues; diversity and identity.

“We are so badly handling our diversity that we are losing our identity. As long as we are doing that, we are going nowhere.

“The management of diversity must be right, religion, politics and ethnicity are parts of our diversity which must be well managed.

“When you mismanage diversity with impunity, it is particularly annoying. It can lead to what we may not want it to lead to.

“I don’t know of any Nigerian who doesn’t wish Nigeria well, but, I know many Nigerians who are unhappy and want to leave Nigeria.

“Our issue is so because, what they expect from Nigeria they are not getting it. The role of religious leaders and religion is to lead but, lead them also to also to let politicians learnt a best lesson.

“God is a Nigerian because, what we have gone through in Nigeria and what we are going through, probably, Nigeria should not be on the map of the world. That’s why I say God is a Nigerian.”

In his keynote address, the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Kukah, who spoke on Caesar and God: Prophetic engagement of the state in Africa, said religion has failed in Africa.

“Only in Nigeria we can go to war because of religion, We are not going to go to war because, of no water ; we are going  to go to war because, we don’t have road . BUT, we are not going to go to war because we don’t have decent housing, we are not going to go to war because of lack of salary, we are not going to go to war because of injustice, but we can go to war in the name of God.

“Nigeria seems to be like a polygamist who is married with two wives. Somehow, Christians are complaining that they are treating Muslims better; Muslims are complaining that they are treating Christians better.

“But, nobody is complaining whether religion is getting its due. But essentially, my argument is that, unless religion through some of us who are leaders and practitioners find itself rescued from the clutches of politics and politicians the wrong notion will continue as it is in Nigeria. Somehow religion will be a problem.”

To Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, religion in Nigeria has become a divisive, when it should have been a unifying factor.

Abiodun said the effects of mismanagement of religious beliefs have made Nigerians to see one another as different, divisible units with varied worldviews, rather than seeing themselves as one entity of humanity.

He said: “In the past, we have always assumed that religion and the State are two different entities. But recent events have continued to lay bare the fact that the connections between religion and the State are increasingly relevant.

“We have continued to see demonstrations that most of peoples’ actions and commitments are derivable from their religious beliefs.

“If we have to talk about security, peace, co-existence and even, socio-economic development, we cannot divorce religion.

“In recent times, the global community has been confronted with acts of terrorism which have been tied to religion, whether rightly or wrongly.

“What is more confounding is the fact that these acts of terrorism are also supposedly sponsored by politicians against the state, and, or by the government against another government.

“In Nigeria, we have had more than our own fair share of acts of violence which some quarters have tied to religion, and even the state.”

  • Ogun monarch proffers solution to insecurity in Nigeria

The Olota of Otaland, Oba Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege, has attributed the incessant killings, kidnappings, insecurity and other social vices bedevilling the country, to the erosion of values and local culture.

As a result, he urged the Federal Government, parents and teachers to inculcate and integrate cultural values in governance as it holds very strong influence in the society.

Obalanlege made his observation known during Yoruba Quiz Competitions, organized for public secondary schools within Ota axis by the Ancestral Pride Foundation (APF), as part of activities to celebrate the monarch’s first anniversary on the throne at Ansar-U-Deen Junior Secondary, Ota, Ogun State.

The monarch said the fight against corruption and insecurity in the country may not be fruitful until Nigerians embrace their time-honoured culture.

He said governance would be free and fair if government could introduce the swearing of office holders into public offices with traditional deities such as “Ogun, Oya, Obatala, Sango” among others, instead of relying on only the Bible and Quran.

At the quiz competition, Local Government Commercial School, Atan, came first; Ado-Odo/Odo High School, Lafenwa, came second; and Igbesa Grammar School came third. Seventeen different schools participated in the competition.

  • Coronet Obas: Ogun community calls for fairness

The people of Ado-Odo in Ogun State have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to handle the report of the committee set up to review the appointment of the suspended coronet obas in the state with fairness.

They also appealed to the committee headed by Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olu of Ilaro, to discharge its duties with impartiality.

The people, under the auspices of the Stakeholders of Ado-Odo Kingdom, made the calls in a statement to protest the installation of Chief Mathew Hugbo Ajeyigbe as a coronet oba in Agbonjedo, a community in Ado-Odo Kingdom.

They condemned the appointment made by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun as undesirable

They said: “The royal and chieftaincy families of Ado-Odo have been thrown into to an unfortunate historic development by the installation”.

The statement, signed by Akinde A. Wasiu, Secretary of the group, expressed disgust at the choice,   pointing out that: “From the Treaty of Annexation signed in 1863 and 1890s, down to post-colonial era, Ado Kingdom has no record of an Egun/Ogu oba”.

The statement described the installation of Ajeyigbe as a monarch as a violation of Yoruba traditional set-up, particularly Ado-Odo Royal heritage, and the judgment of the Supreme Court   in the Locus Classicus case of Chief S. O. Ogunola vs Hoda Eiyekole: SC95/85.

It would be recalled that Governor Abiodun, on assumption of duty, suspended the 74 coronet and upgraded obas installed by his predecessor and  set up a committee headed by Oba Olugbenle  to review the controversial appointments.

  • I’m worried about 13m out of school Nigerian children – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday said he remained worried about the 13 million children who are out of school system in the country.

Obasanjo added that he was equally bothered by the growing number of youths, about 60 per cent of the country’s population, who he said have not yet found themselves in the nation’s leadership positions unlike what obtained in his time or elsewhere.

The ex -president who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) visited him at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), also noted that whatever he had achieved for himself or done for the country, were due to his having access to education.

The NYCN delegation, led by its National President, Mr. Niyi Oladele, was in Abeokuta to seek the ex –  president’s help in finding a lasting solution to the menace insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and herdsmen attacks across the country.

The Council also used the occasion to confer an award of the ‘Father of the Nation’ on Obasanjo and  gave him a gift of N1 million as a donation for the Presidential Library.

The elder statesman recalled that he started showing his leadership quality in Congo when he was less than 30 while on military mission there. He lamented that Nigerian youth of today have not been able to fit themselves into leadership  positions.

He, however, urged the youth not to allow anybody to  tell them they “are too young to lead,” saying those frustrating the youth are not better endowed than them.

Obasanjo said:  “Whatever I have done, I have done it because I was educated and the love I have for Nigeria. If I didn’t have education, I would not have been able to do what I have done and today, it pains me that more than 13million Nigerian children who should be in school are out of school.

“We don’t need additional teachers; you will only increase what those teachers get maybe by 40 per cent or something,  we can even do two streams if we prepare for that and start two years from now and those children would have become product that would be able to make contributions and make their own life better and as well making the life of their families too better.

“I am so much concerned about the youths, the truth is, over 60 percent of our populations are youths and under 30 years of age.

“Don’t let anybody tell you that you are too young, I started making contribution to the world when I was serving in Congo in 1960, I was only 24 years old. By the time I went to the war front, I was still under 35 years of age, by the time I became the Head of State, I was under 40 years of age.

  • Ogun to create database for widows

Ogun State Governor’s wife Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun has expressed commitment to creating a database for widows.

This database, which will serve as a pool, according to her, will assist in financial literacy and skills acquisition.

It will be managed by the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Mrs. Abiodun spoke during the 2019 International Widow’s Day at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

She assured the people that the state government will also empower widows by providing them with tools, skills and support necessary to ameliorate hardship and lessen the burden of caring for their children after the demise of their husbands.

To drive home the objective, Mrs. Abiosun said wives of chairmen of the various LGAs would ensure a communal quarterly meeting with all the widows in their LGAs with a view of monitoring them and tracking their development.

The forum, she submitted, would also foster a sense of communal and sisterhood among the widows.

She was concerned that the effect of emotional and mental issues caused by grief from the loss of a husband had traditionally taken the back seat, saying this would be addressed by the present administration.

According to her: “We understand the limitations caused by a poor emotional mental state and, as such, will be setting up monitoring and counselling schemes across the various widowed communities in the different LGAs.

“We are committed to partnering with corporate organisations and private individuals to sponsor widows in Ogun State.”

No fewer than 1,000 widows went home with gifts, cash and foodstuff during the occasion.

Mrs. Adetola Quadri, a retired nursing sister and trader, who lost her husband about 16 years ago, advised widows to make friends with their in-laws and not see them as enemies as their friendship with them would earn them support.

  • N7b loan: I’m shocked my good gesture evokes undue focus, says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has expressed surprise that his revelation that he borrowed N7 billion to pay May salaries of workers had elicited unhealthy attention from Ogun people and the public.

Abiodun noted that he was palpably taken aback by the “spin” given to the essence of his meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and chieftains on Monday by spinners, which led people to focus mainly on the N7 billion loan secured from friends.

The governor, in a statement issued yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, however, added that the government has chosen to be forward-looking and not allow itself to be distracted.

He explained that the meeting was called to harmonize the positions of the government with that of the party on how to move the state forward and ensure that the dividends of democracy penetrate to the grassroots level.

The governor stated: “Rather than focus on the developmental issues  discussed, attention has been focused on the good gesture of the governor to secure a loan to pay the May salaries of the workforce.

“The government chooses to be forward-looking and not to be distracted, and I would like to state that the meeting was called to harmonize the positions of the government with that of the party on how to move the state forward and ensure that the dividends of democracy percolate to the grassroots level.

“The common agenda is operationalisation of the governor’s project of joint prosperity of all in the Gateway State and the buy-in of the leadership of the party as critical stakeholders in the scheme of things are of essence.

“At the meeting Governor Abiodun unfolded how he would build one primary health care center in each of the 236 wards of the state, using local manpower.

“He explained that he would rehabilitate 236 primary schools, one in each of every ward in the state, and set up a job portal for his administration to have accurate statistics of skilled and unskilled labor in the state.

“He said he has emplaced a portal to register on a continuous basis for unemployed youths with a view to providing them jobs suitable for their trades and academic qualifications.

“We shall be public-private sector-oriented in our governance model, he said, adding that members of the APC should not be discouraged, that we are going to have an inclusive government that will utilize valuable potentials that abound in the state, irrespective of party affiliations.

  • ‘We’ll transform Ilupeju-Ekiti to tourists’ centre

Residents of Ilupeju-Ekiti, in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State have vowed to make the town one of West Africa’s tourists’ attractions.

They said the town, strategically located in the local government has the potential to become one of the best tourists’ sites in Nigeria.

The National President, Ilupeju-Ekiti Development Association (IDA) Chief Femi Babalola spoke at the get-together tagged Iyan Day organised by Lagos Zone II (Ota) of the association at Dalemo, Ogun State.

The former Deputy General Manager Risk Management Department of the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, said those indigenous to the town would not relent from supporting government’s efforts towards the development of the town, even as he said they would continue their assistance in that regard through donations that will help in providing infrastructural facilities for the people’s well-being as well as make Ilupeju-Ekiti become relaxation centre for travellers.

According to him, the town falls within the Ekiti-speaking area of Yoruba land, surrounded in the east by Itapa-Ekiti, to the west by Oye-Ekiti to South by Ire-Ekiti and to the North by Imojo- Ekiti.

He said Ilupeju-Ekiti lies on the strategic Lagos-Abuja Highway, while its geographical location is unique as the town is almost equidistant from Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Chief Babalola urged both federal and state governments to utilise the town’s potential as great tourists’ centre to improve the country’s economic growth.

He reeled off some of the natural deposits which the town boasts to include oroke ejia, the Granite Tosk situated at Aita which the Eseta warriors used as an effective military platform to mount surveillance and launch attacks and counter-attacks against enemy forces during the inter-tribal wars in Yoruba land.

He said the town has tillable land for variety of foods and cash crops such as oil palm, kola nuts plantain and citrus fruits.

The Chairman Lagos State chapter of IDA, Pastor Sunday Bamisaiye-Oni said the association was established as a forum for citizens in the Diaspora to have a way of communicating, chart a new way that they and their friends could contribute to the development of the town.

He said through this, they have contributed greatly to the construction of the town’s modern palace, civic centre, Chief Magistrate’s Court and the ongoing Menara Market modernisation project.

He appealed to those indigenous to the town to continue being united and ensure they contribute their quota to the development of the town to make it become a proud tourists’ centre in the future.

The Chairman IDA Ota Zone II, Mr. Femi Durotawo said the programme was aimed at enabling the sons and daughters of Ilupeju-Ekiti come together, unite and pool their resources to pursue a common goal of developing the town.

He said the programne tagged Iyan (pounded yam) was to practicalised Ekiti culture. He noted that it has been observed that generally people of Ilupeju-Ekiti relish pounded yam among other foods, even as he said the event was also aimed at ensuring that such tradition transcended to every Ekiti unborn children and those born in other parts of the country.

Durotawo stressed the need for all sons and daughters of the town to embrace the programme for the progress of the community, saying government alone could not provide all the facilities needed by the community

  • N7bn Loan: Abiodun not prepared to govern Ogun – APM

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ogun State on Tuesday expressed worry over Governor Dapo Abiodun’s claims to borrowing N7bn to pay May salaries of workers and described it as “gross irresponsibility.”

APM further described Abiodun’s claims as a sign of one who is unprepared to govern the Gateway State, also lamenting that the Governor is making jest of the electorates who voted him into office.

The Governor had in an interactive session with APC stalwarts in Abeokuta on Monday claimed he borrowed over N7billion through his “friends” who are bank managing directors to pay May salary of Ogun workers.

But the APM in a statement by its Acting Publicity Secretary, Olumide Balogun, wondered how such huge sum money could be borrowed by a Governor without the approval of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

The statement reads in full: “The Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) Ogun State has described Gov. Dapo Abiodun’s claim that he borrowed N7b to pay May salary as the height of unpreparedness and gross irresponsibility on the part of a man who was declared winner of an election as far back as March 10th, 2019.

“We are very sure by now, the good people of Ogun are beginning to understand the true meaning of democracy and what good governance entails. This is because the newly formed government of Dapo Abiodun is doing nothing other than making jest of them; distorting their reasonings and presenting government businesses as a help to the electorates which in real term means services.

“Latest in his jokes is the statement credited to the governor during an interactive session with APC stalwarts in Abeokuta on Tuesday, where he claimed to have borrowed over N7billion through his “friends” who are bank MDs to pay May salary of Ogun workers.

“We must note that he took oath of office in May 29th, 2019 and information had it that his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun had already prepared the cash for payment before handing – over to him on May 28th, 2019.

“It is a surprise that a governor who had barely spent 3 days (as at May 31st when the payment was made) in office had borrowed such huge amount to pay salaries alone. We therefore considered it crucial to seek clarifications from the governor on the following questions:

    1. Can a State governor unilaterally obtain a loan of N7billion from any bank(s)?. Most especially when there is no state executive council in place?
    2. Would such borrowing not require the Approval of the OGHA?
    3. Is such a transaction in line with the Financial Regulations? Or was the transaction made based on personal relationship or onbehalf of the state government? At least, he is already the governor of the state.”

“In effect, this statement is a concoction of lies and clear evidence of lack of preparedness for governance by Dapo Abiodun.

“Indeed, enquiries suggest that the State received over N5billion from the FAAC for May, which should be more than enough to cover staff salaries including what Senator Amosun left in the state treasury for the new government. What happened to all these monies within 48 hours?

“We must not forget quickly that Dapo Abiodun resumed office with a brand new 2019 G-wagon worth of N127million as his official car and changed the entire governor’s fleet. This must have cost him hundreds of millions of naira of tax payers money.

“This is a man who is speculated to have spent billions of naira to procure his way to Oke – Mosan and no doubt, will seek any way possible to quickly settle his debts especially when APM and LP are challenging his victory at the election petition tribunal and court of appeal respectively.

Read Also: Abiodun constitutes panel on MAUTECH, Ogun Poly

“Well, most people who know Dapo Abiodun before his miraculous emergence in the state are not surprised about this development and his extravagant lifestyles. However, we will implore him to stop making jokes of Ogun and short – changing the masses.

“May God help us in Ogun State because if the governor can borrow N7billion to pay May salary alone, only God knows how much he would have borrowed in the next 3months (till APM Victory at the Tribunal) for such purposes, whereas, he is yet to hit the ground running; projects wise.

“The essence of 2 months between date of emergence and swearing-in is to enable the governor prepare for the business of government. It is elementary for a responsible government to know that salaries will be due on the 31st of May. To claim surprise that the salary “crept” up on him is most irresponsible.

“We hope this phantom “N7billion loan” claim is not Anticipatory Looting!
