Continuing, she said: “This Class has demonstrated a propensity to succeed on the biggest stages. Be it in the classroom, at competitions or in the community, they have displayed their talents, passions, skills, accomplishments and achievements. They produced outstanding results in the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), with two of them; Anna Adobamen and Shalom Emeka, obtaining A-Stars in all the subjects they had registered for.

“Also worth savouring is their imposing Standardised Aptitude Test (SAT) results.  Worthy of note again is the fact that two of the students in the Class of 2019 got 2nd best SAT result in the world and best in the country, scoring 1,550 out of 1,600.

“Similarly, we have some of them scoring above 300 in the recently-released Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) result. The Class of 2019 had a strong representation in a group of students that won the Global Business Plan Award which had over 9,000 schools across the globe in contest. The Class of 2019 is, indeed, trail blazers! They have exhibited a commitment to the values and culture upon which everything in Corona school is predicated. “They have led by example and worked incredibly hard to foster, nurture, support, display, and instill the tenets of a positive, safe, and proud school culture and climate. We will be forever grateful for the indelible mark you have left on our learning community, on our hearts, and on me, personally.

“The theme of this year’s Graduation ceremony: ‘Excelencia Como Cultura (Excellence as a Culture)’ lies at the very heart of Corona Secondary School essence.  Excellence is one of the indispensable core values that provide strong anchorage to the school’s avowed mission and vision.

“For us, excellence is a culture, a way of life in CSS. We all lead this very life happily, cashing into emergent trends..”

He said: “For me, the preparation that you have gone through here is a foundation of how life is should start. I have no doubt that even the theme that has been chosen for this graduation is very apt, ‘Excellence as a Culture’.

“Excellence is not something that happens. It is something you plan for, and you do in a very meticulous way. And when you do it consistently, it then becomes a culture. And once excellence becomes a culture, it is very difficult for you to see mediocrity and associate with it. Everything you do, even in your personal life, would be different. But it is a commitment much more than something else. And I can only admonish you to keep the flag of excellence flying as you depart from here into the rest of your bright future.”

High point of the event was the presentation of various categories of awards and endowments to some outstanding students of the 2019 graduates by the school and other professional bodies, parents and individuals.

Speaking with reporters, the Valedictorian said her journey in the school which began six years ago was one that confronted her with several challenges but with the help from the school structure, she triumphed at the end of the day.

She said: “It started six years ago. I was still getting used to the idea of being in a boarding school and secondary school, even as I used to think that life was all about fun and games. But it took a lot of dedication and hard work as instilled by the school and my parents to keep my eyes on the price and keep looking forward.

“I also thank God for being there for me even when I didn’t believe in myself. I remembered one of my setbacks in one of the terms I didn’t emerge first in my class as I used to. It was really a setback for me emotionally, but God helped me through it and I bounced back better than I have ever been.

“In a lot of ways, CSS has impacted my life. First I knew I never used to be this brilliant in my primary school, but the moment I entered CSS, that excellent spirit of Corona wrapped me up, and here we are today. The school has been such a lovely community with very supportive non-teaching members of staff and teaching members of staff all to ensure our success.

“For me, it is the best school in Africa if not the world.”

Shalom plans to study Product Design Engineering in the United Kingdom.”

Adobamen on her part said the journey was one that went by a flash. It wasn’t easy, it was stressful but fun. There were ups and downs for me, especially in my years 9 and 12. But with the help of the school and my parents, I was able to remain focused.

“In year 12, I had over four external examinations to sit for and at a point I felt really overwhelmed, but thanks to God, the teachers, and parents, I was able to pull through. Aside academics, Corona has made me to be self-confident, learn how to manage time, and always pursue excellence in all I do. From here, I would be moving over to the United State of America to study Electrical Engineering.

For Memunat Abiru it is quite unbelievable. She said: “I can still remember my first day in year seven, coming into the school as a new student.

“In all, Corona has helped me to learn how to deal with pressure and stress.

  • Abiodun inaugurates committee to review appointments of 75 coronet Obas by Amosun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the Chieftain Review Committee constituted to look into the upgrade and appointments of 75 coronet Obas by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the twilight of his administration.

The committee is chaired by the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

Other members of the committee are the Osile of Oke Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso; Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya; Elepe of Epe,  Sagamu Oba Adewale Osiberu; Aro of Egbaland Chief Yinka Kufile, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and   Chieftaincy Affairs Mr. Babatunde Oyeti and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Lanre Osota.

The governor, who spoke at the inauguration of the committee at his Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, said his government places a very high premium on traditional institution and acknowledged the invaluable roles and contributions it plays in promoting good governance at the grassroots.

He decried the unprecedented approval, appointment and upgrade of some chiefs and Baales to coronet Obas, which generated reactions from the traditional institution and members of the public, adding that the setting up of the committee was to address the alleged anomalies.

“It will be recalled that the last administration approved the appointments and upgrade of some monarchs at the tail end of their administration, notable among these appointments was the upgrade of some baales to coronet Obas, which is unprecedented in the history of our traditional institution in the state.

“The setting up of this committee should not be seen as an exercise to score cheap political points or witch-hunt anyone, but rather should be seen as a token of the seriousness our administration will continue to ascribe to the traditional institution,” he said.

Abiodun, however, added that his administration would ensure that all chieftaincy matters follow due process and the extant laws, while also placing high premium on chieftaincy matters and looking into the welfare of the traditional institutions.

In his response, Oba Olugbenle said the committee would do a thorough job by being fair and just, adding that members would go back to the traditional institution and the people to educate  them that government was not out to score cheap political points or on a revenge mission but to put things in their right perspective.

  • Monarch, chiefs flay confusion, disaffection in Ogun community

The new Olu of Moloko Ashipa in Obafemi Owode Local Government of Ogun State, Oba Nureni  Adesina and the chiefs have condemned the alleged attempt by Alabi Oguntoyinbo to cause disaffection in the peaceful and agrarian town in connivance with some disgruntled elements.

Oba Adesina, until his elevation by the past administration in Ogun State on the strength of  the recommendation by the Alake and Paramount ruler  of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, was the Baale of Moloko Ashipa for 10 years.

He disclosed that since being made a coronet Oba, Alabi (allegedly) has been creating confusion in the community, claiming to be member and head (Olori – Ebi) of the ruling family.

Alabi Oguntoyinbo and 15 others reportedly  petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun, claiming membership of the Adesina Likoyi family of Moloko Ashipa and that Oba Nureni Nosiru Adesina wasn’t their choice.

But speaking with the The Nation on the development,  Adesina denied Alabi Oguntoyinbo, saying Pa (Chief) Osho Oguntola Adesina is the head (Olori – ebi) of his family and urged whoever that is in doubt, should go verify from Pa Osho who, he added, is still alive in the town.

“We condemn this attempt to create confusion by some disgruntled elements. I have been Baale since 2010 and later made Baale – General. I have been functioning in that capacity and nobody contested the office with me.

“Alabi Oguntoyinbo is not the head (Olori – ebi) of my family. Our Olori – ebi is Pa Osho Oguntola Adesina and he is alive.

”Alabi Oguntoyinbo has been out of the town for about 25 years and has lost touch with reality in the town. I advise people to discountenance and disregard the posturing of Alabi Oguntoyinbo,” he said.

Checks by The Nation revealed that Adesina enjoys the support of the Alake, the Balogun of Igbore Chief Tajudeen Lemboye; the Oluwo of Igbore Chief Anthony Oliyide; the women leader (Mama Isedo) Madam Fauisat Adesina and elders of Moloko Ashipa.

  • Flooding: Abiodun urges Ogun residents to stop dumping refuse on drainages

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has advised residents to desist from the habit of dumping refuse on the drainages and other water channels to prevent flooding and the attendant dangers in the state.

Abiodun said the state government would devise a comprehensive plan to address the challenges of waste disposal and flooding, adding that the drains that serve as carriage would be re-designed to accommodate flow of large volume of flood water.

The governor made this known on Monday while on an inspection tour of some parts of Ijebu- Ode  town, including Igbeba, Paramount, Moborode, Italapo, Degun and Imowo- Ibadan roads that were affected by flood few days ago.

He said he decided to visit the affected areas and see first-hand what flood has done to the town, urging the residents to be patient with the state government in its determination to find lasting solution to the menace.

Abiodun noted that he was only fulfilling the promise he made during his campaign not to forget the people if voted into office.

He sympathised with those whose homes were overtaken by the flood, reiterating the need for the people to always clean the drainages close to them to allow for easy flow of water and save the roads constructed with public fund from being washed away.

He said: “From what we have seen here, the biggest problem we have in Ijebu Ode is that the drains that crisscross the town are small concrete drains that are covered, so they don’t allow for maintenance, they are very tiny. Ijebu-Ode will require very big open drains that can easily be serviced and maintained, so we are going to have a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving these problems once and for all.”

  • Man allegedly detained, extorted for cautioning policemen over reckless driving

An office support staff of the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service (LIRS), Mr. Michael Green, has alleged that he was detained at Makinde Division, on false accusation of being a thief and phone snatcher.

The incident allegedly happened on Friday June 7.

According to Green, he was riding in a colleague’s car when he cautioned the policemen who were coming from Ogun State in a Toyota Sienna car against dangerous driving.

Apparently irked by Green’s audacity, the policemen were said to have stopped his vehicle and arrested him.

He was taken to Makinde Police Division where the operatives who were attached to the Inspector General Squad claimed he was a thief and phone snatcher.

It took the intervention of his senior colleagues in his office before he was freed after a sum of N4, 500 was collected from them as bail fee.

‘’A colleague in my office gave me a lift in her car after close of work in the evening. When we got to Obadeyo axis of Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, the driver of a Toyota Sienna car painted in wine colour drove dangerously and almost ran into our car.

‘’Since I was seated beside my colleague who was driving the car, I told the driver of the Toyota Sienna car to stop driving dangerously, without knowing they were policemen.

‘’Suddenly, they came out of the vehicle wearing small badges indicating they were operatives of a special police team, they dragged me out of the car and asked my colleague to go.

‘’Inside their car, I noticed that they had arrested two conductors around Sango Ota area of Ogun State. They took us to Makinde Police Station, Oshodi, and accused us of being thieves and phone snatchers and they left the station.

‘’When I tried to explain to the policemen at the station that we are not robbers, they threatened to deal with me. If not for the intervention of my senior colleagues in the office, I would have been arraigned for a crime I did not commit.

‘’An officer at the station who they handed me over to called Hakeem collected a sum of N4,500 for my bail before he releasing me. ’’

Contacted, police spokesman, Mr Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said records at the station did not confirm the story narrated by the victim.

He however promised that  a thorough investigation would be carried out to establish the veracity of the allegation.

‘’ The records at the station in question have been checked and nothing confirms thatsuch arrest on the said date.

‘’However, since the complainant has mentioned an officer called Hakeem as allegedly being the officer that handled his case and collected money for his bail, we would investigate the matter to confirm if that actually happened and revert to you(our correspondent).’’

As promised, the police spokesman later told our correspondent on the telephone that the officer called Hakeem had been identified and arrested.

‘’We have been able to identify the said officer called Hakeem. He said the policemen who brought the victim to the station were from Ogun State.’’

Elkana said a policeman named Hakeem curiously claimed the said victim dashed him the sum of N4,500 and was immediately arrested and is currently detained for investigation because “the Lagos State Police Commissioner will not tolerate indiscipline on the part of policemen.’’
