Senate approves $350m World Bank loan for Ogun

The Senate at plenary on Thursday approved 350 million dollars World Bank loan for Ogun State Development Policy Operation (DPO) as contained in the 2016-2018 Rolling Plan.

The approval followed the presentation of a report on the loan by Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Sen. Shehu Sani.

Presenting the report, Sani said that the committee observed that the Ogun State DPO budget for the loan had been approved by World Bank in 2016.

He added that the loan was further captured in the 2016-2018 borrowing plan as approved by the National Assembly.

Sani noted that the committee also observed that the credit facility had an attractive low financing interest rate below five (5) percent, a moratorium of five (5) years and a twenty-five-year (25) maturity term.

He said “the facility has already been captured in the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

“It also has low and acceptable loan sustainability level, therefore it is eligible to borrow.

“The DPO loan will further help to enhance the capacity of the state government.

“The state has met the various conditions laid by World Bank and as such qualified for the loan.

“It has also put in place institutional framework for transparent and accountable budgetary and financial purpose.”

He explained that the projects to be funded by the facility would engender economic growth, increase revenue generation and create employment opportunities.

“The committee recommends that the Senate should go ahead and approve the loan as contained in the 2016-2018 external borrowing rolling plan of President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ Sani added.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over plenary, put the report to voice vote and was adopted by the lawmakers.

FRSC urges Ogun to effect palliative measures on sango-ota roads

The Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) has appealed to Ogun Government to repair roads in Sango-Ota and its environs, to ease free-flow of traffic in the area.

Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, in an interview in Ota on Friday that such palliative measures would reduce the suffering of those plying the road.

According to him, the deplorable state of roads in Sango-Ota and its environs has been the major challenge confronting the personnel of the unit and public in the area.

“There is an urgent need for the State Government to come to the aid of the people by providing measures that will reduce their hardship,’’ he said.

The unit commander explained those road networks in Sango-Ota and its environs were bad, adding that they had become death traps for the people.

He listed some of the bad roads to include: Ota to Agbara, Owode to Ilaro, Owode to Ifo and Ifo to papa area.

Oguntoyinbo also said that over laden vehicles (longer, heavier vehicles) easily over turn due to the nature of the roads.

“This development has also affected business activities and contributed to gridlock the areas are experiencing,’’ the unit commander said.

He also implored companies in Sango-Ota and its environs not to wait for the government before contributing to development where they made their revenues.

“Do the little you can to enable your businesses move on smoothly in the areas.’’

  • I resisted pressure to influence choice of FUNAAB new VC – Obasanjo

I resisted pressure to influence choice of FUNAAB new VC – Obasanjo

… I’ll love all, including those opposed to my emergence – Salako

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has given a little insight into the ‘behind – the – scene –  intrigues and politics’ that attended the processes leading to the emergence of Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako as the new Vice – Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture ( FUNAAB ), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Salako, a Professor of Soil Physics  on Wednesday officially assumed duty as the substantive sixth Vice – Chancellor of the 29 years old university with the transfer of an instrument of office to him at a ceremony witnessed by Obasanjo, the Pro – Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Dr. Aboki Zhawa, FUNAAB past Vice – Chancellors, including Prof. Julius Okogie,  the Acting – Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ololade Eniokuomehin, among others.

Salako succeeded Professor Olusola Oyewole, whose five years tenure was riddled with intractable crisis.

Obasanjo revealed that there were a lot pressures on him to influence the university Governing Council in its decision regarding who became the next Vice – Chancellor but refused to bow to such pressures.

He said many things were said  about the new Vice – Chancellor of FUNAAB but stood his ground not to interfere with the process, save encouraging the Governing Council to do its job thoroughly.

The ex-President lauded the Council for doing the job of picking the new V-C professionally, and hailed Salako for his brilliant performance during the screening process.

He urged him to strive towards excellence in his new position and at the same time, be vigilant lest he falls.

Obasanjo said: “I know there must have been pressure on you (Governing Council). Even me, an outsider, there was pressure on me. But, I did not succumb to pressure. I did not even succumb to pressure to tell you what people were telling me.

“When the Chairman of the Governing Council came  to tell me of people being shortlisted for screening for the position of the VC, I told him to go do his job and he also let me know who (Salako) was selected based on his best performance.

“Salako also came to me after his selection and I told him let’s discuss all that people were saying about you. I asked him you were part of the last administration that did not perform at the end.

“His answers sweet my bele. He didn’t deny. He said yes but he was also part of Professor Balogun administration which performed well at the end of his tenure. You see, in the military, we say there is no bad soldier but bad officer that was why Salako did well during Balogun administration but not in another administration.

“And I am happy that you (Governing Council) did your job with almost diligence and the fear of God. Chairman, may God continue to guide and direct you.

“Prof Salako, the VC now, I congratulate you. I congratulate this university for having you at the helms of affairs at this point in time. God will do the job for you as God helped you through the Council to be appointed.

“Judging by what we have heard about you, judging by what the university Council has found out about you, your performance before them and your brilliant speech here this afternoon, there is no reason why you should not do well.

“But the Americans would say words are cheap. You must make sure that you constantly refer to what you have declared by yourself publicly that you will do so that you are keeping what you have put on the tablet that you will do.

“Secondly, I think it is the acting VC that said the past is gone and forgotten. That is a mistake. If anybody had told me that when I was leaving public office in 1979   that we would have an Abacha running the affairs of Nigeria, I would say the man is mental. But we had an Abacha.

“Never you take anything for granted. It can happen. It is your responsibility not to allow it to happen. Be a team player. I like the part you quoted in my book, “My Watch.” If you are succeeding people will want to pull you down.

“People will be envious of you. If you are not succeeding, nobody will think about you. So, if people are trying to pull you down, regard it  also as a mark of success.

“In your speech you asked us to stand up for a number of things including welfare. And I counted the number of things you asked us to stand up for, they are nine. On my own thinking and way of life, you left out the important tenth thing to stand up for, and that is the fear of God. May God grant you His fear to do what will please God and man.”

In his speech, the new Vice Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako, pledged “not to hate or be vindictive” to those opposed to his emergence.

Salako said he would “block leakages and ensure efficient utilization of funds” in FUNAAB.

He reminded staff and students of the existing “rules and regulations” of the university, advising whoever that wants to exercise his freedom to do so within the ambit of such rules.

He also warned against late – coming, absenteeism and non – responsiveness to official requests, saying the rules would be applied in the event of violations.

“I have assured the Governing Council and all who listened to my earlier speeches since my emergence that I cannot afford to hate or be vindictive.

“I’m conscious of the fact that in spite of opposition and attack, God still appointed  me through the University Governing Council. Therefore, I cannot fight God’s battle for him,” Salako said.

He also  noted that he stands for ” professionalism, hard work, welfare, reward for noble achievements,”  among other things, vowing never to let down the guard of the university lest it be debased.

“I shall not let down the guard of the university for it be debased. This shall not happen. This cannot happen,” he said.

In his address, the Pro -chancellor, Dr Aboki Zhawa, noted that from the comments and remarks which trailed Salako’s emergence, he has “a lot of work to do.”

He asked him to be wary of friends whose wishes may not help his administration, but have tendencies to sink it.

Zhawa expressed the council’s unflinching support for the new helmsman’s success and urged members of the Senate to do same.

He also asked unions and aggrieved members of FUNAAB not to be clogs in the wheel of progress.

He advised them to  explore peaceful means of dispute  resolution and make court process a last resort.

“Don’t act funny because it won’t be funny,” Zhawa warned.

Ijebu-Igbo boils over killing of RTEAN member

The seedy Ijebu-Igbo, the Headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, boils on Monday morning following a pre-dawn killing of a member of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria( RTEAN ) identified as Seyi.
Angry residents and transporters as a early 7:am bunched up at the popular Station road junction, spilled into adjoining roads  and shut down all activities in protest over the death of Seyi even as a detachment of policemen from Ijebu – Igbo Divisional Police Headquarters battled to contain the situation from drifting into lawlessness.
Seyi who was confirmed dead around 4:am today was said to have been knocked down by hit and run vehicle around 2:am while loading his vehicle for a trip to Lagos, a source in Ijebu – Igbo, confided in The Nation.
The source added that as Seyi writhed in pains on the road, more vehicles ran over him many times until some parts of his body were kneaded to pulps, fuelling rage among members of RTEAN and some residents.
But the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told The Nation that the transport union officials usually go to where people sell animals’ skin(ponmo) to collect revenue and that it was while a member of RTEAN was trying to collect revenue that a vehicle conveying ponmo knocked him down and the victim died.
Abimbola, an Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP), said the disturbance in the town is the work of RTEAN members who are agitated over the death of their colleague but added that the Police have since taken over the area and restored peace.
  • Budget town hall meeting an expression of true democracy, says Amosun

Budget town hall meeting an expression of true democracy, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said the state’s budget town hall meeting is a practical expression of true democracy where people’s decisions are recognised and appreciated in running the affairs of the state.

Amosun spoke during a town hall meeting at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the state capital, on next year’s budget.

He said: “The town hall meetings have been genuine platforms where all opinions are not only explored but are critically examined for the growth and development of our dear state.”

The governor noted that people-oriented budget has been the priority of his administration since inception.

He added that this had contributed to his Rebuilding Mission.

Amosun said a State Development Plan (SDP) was initiated early this year and would run till 2030 as a critical element for agricultural production and industrialisation.

The governor said it had been helping in increasing financial and technical supports from the state’s development partners.

According to him, it will boost agricultural production, reduce dependency on oil and empower youths through technical and vocational capacity building as well as strengthen good governance.

The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Ms. Aderenle Adesina, said the meeting was aimed at educating the public on government’s plans for next year.

The commissioner said it would enable the government to get their thoughts and contributions for inclusion into the budget.

She recalled that previous meetings added values to the administration’s achievements.

Ms Adesina enjoined the people to join hands with the government to ensure that the state’s potentials were adequately explored.

  • No corps member had twins for me, says Amosun

No corps member had twins for me, says Amosun

GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State yesterday described as untrue a report in a section of the media that a female youth corps member had a set of twins for him. The governor said the rumour gained so much currency that his mother – in-law had to call him to confirm if what she heard about a ‘second wife’ having twins for him was true or not. Amosun said he had been married to his wife, Olufunso Amosun, for about 26 years, noting that he had never kept a girlfriend, let alone having one that delivered twins for him.

He noted that the task of keeping one wife ‘’ is even challenging today in Nigeria and (he) had no plans whatsoever to double such challenges with additional baggage.’’ The governor vowed to fish out those spreading rumours and falsehoods against him, and have them sent to jail. According to Amosun, some unnamed politicians, who are aspiring to govern Ogun State in 2019 are responsible for the spate of falsehood churned out against him and his administration.

The Governor who cited the reported raid of his Lagos home by the Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the latest in the series of falsehoods being circulated against him, vowed to smoke out the perpetrators and jail them. He also dismissed the purported raid on his home by EFCC as a ‘concoction of idiots’ while speaking at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during a town hall meeting of stakeholders for the 2018 Budget. The meeting was organized by the state’s Ministry of Budget and Planning for the purpose of collecting inputs of all stakeholders and build them into the preparation of the 2018 Executive Appropriation Bill, but Amosun used the avenue to clear air on rumours being circulated against him.

He said instead of those aspiring to govern the state to tell residents how they intend to transform the state and make it better, they have resorted to engaging some “idiots” who would sit in their room to concoct falsehood in the vain hope that lies and rumour mongering would help the governorship aspirations of their masters. Amosun also broke his silence on a case of a lady on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who was rumoured to have had twin – babies for him about a year ago. On the expected 2018 budget, Amosun said his administration would make judicious use of it, adding that he work round the clock to ensure that all ongoing programmes and projects were completed on or before May, 2019. He called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to make provision for special funds to be disbursed to some states which had put infrastructure in place to prevent flooding. According to him, giving fund and relief materials to the states ravaged by flood is good but others that put measures in place to avert flooding in their respective states should also be rewarded with fund as a form of encouragement.

PDP Chairmanship: I can’t move without Obasanjo’s advice – Daniel

    … Seeks Baba’s blessing

Former Governor Gbenga Daniel on Friday visited ex – President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Presidential Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta, Ogun state, to consult and solicit support ahead of his planned declaration of intention to run for the Office of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Daniel, who governed Ogun State for eight years on the platform of PDP, is expected to formally declare his intention for the PDP chairmanship position in Abuja next Wednesday.

The ex – Governor who had since reconciled with Obasanjo after the duo fell apart in the build up to the 2011 governorship election in the state, noted that given the status of Obasanjo as a foundation member of PDP, it was necessary that he seeks his input before proceeding with the ambition to lead the party at the National level.

Other PDP bigwigs spoiling to also lead the once touted as the largest political party in Africa, are chief Bode George and the Chairman of Daar Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Daniel  and his entourage comprising  members of the Ogun State Caretaker Committee of the party, former State Chairman of PDP, Elder Joju Fadairo, former House of Representatives member, Hon. Kayode Amusan, former minister, Alh. Sarafa Ishola and Director of Mobilization and Organization, Ogun PDP, Deji Kalejaiye among others, who arrived Obasanjo’s home around 10am, entered a closed door meeting with him after about an hour long – waiting.

Others in the entourage are Chief (Mrs) Iyabo Apampa and  former Deputy Governor in the state, Alhaja  Salimot Badru.

And when they emerged later, Daniel told journalists that he came to “consult with Baba Obasanjo and seeks his advice” regarding his ambition to run for the office of the National Chairman of PDP, adding that he can’t make any  move in that direction without the ex – President’s input.

“I’m contesting for the PDP chairmanship position. I’m consulting and Baba is one of the foundation members of the party and we can’t move without him,” Daniel said.

He said PDP is now united and being rejuvenated to make it a party to beat both in Ogun State and at the centre.

“We have been united. You can see all of us are here. We have realised that united we stand and divided we fall. There are no many problems or many challenges. What you see is just called internal democracy.

“And to summarize it, we just want to return the party to the people and once that is done, I think the people will be in control, he added.

Also, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of PDP for the state, Mr. Tunde Odunye, told journalists aside seeking Obasanjo’s support, they also confessed their “transgressions” to him and got his “forgiveness” as a father would forgive erring children.

However, it should be recalled that Obasanjo had in the build up to the 2015 general elections, publicly tore his PDP membership card before Television Camera and announced his quitting of partisan politics to become an elder statesman and father of all of Nigerians.

MAPOLY upgrade: Amosun allays fears of students

Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun says the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic ( MAPOLY ), Abeokuta, will continue to run its normal academic programmes in  the next four years.

Amosun also dismissed insinuations that the institution had gone into extinction following its upgrade to a university.

He made the clarification when he spoke to protesting students under the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Students ( NANS ), Ogun chapter, at the Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office in Abeokuta.

The state government recently upgraded MAPOLY to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology ( MAUSTECH ).

It also created Ogun State Polytechnic to be located at Ipokia area of the state.

Placard carrying students marched from Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ) on Abiola Way to the Governor’s Office in protest.

The demonstration was christened “Rescue Ogun State Education Campaign.”

Some of the placards had inscriptions which read: “Save Ogun State Education”, “Education must survive” and “Mapoly must survive.”

Amosun also said he would discuss with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic ( ASUP ) on the problems in the institution.

He explained that students running various programmes at different levels would complete their studies and would not be taken to Ipokia.

Amosun, however, said that there would not be automatic appointment for the aggrieved lecturers in both the university and the new polytechnic.

“I am not happy because this is my school. What is happening today is because those that have been given the privilege to serve us are not serving well.

“Everybody here will finish their courses; it will take four years before MAPOLY will go into extinction.

“You are not going to Ipokia. If the lecturers don’t want that, we will sort them out.

“We will seek for new lecturers for the university and the new polytechnic.

“Mapoly lecturers are not comfortable with it. I said the appointment they have is for MAPOLY, for the new university, they will have to reapply.

“If they are qualified, they can take them. I will ask the commissioner to meet them again,’’ he said.

On the delayed examination, the governor stressed that the lecturers should explain why they decided to hold the students to ransom.

He argued that the reason should not be because the state government created a new school.

“We are only admitting ND1, if you have carryover, you are going to Ipokia. I told them (management), don’t admit new students to MAPOLY,” he said.

He added that education would be free at the primary and secondary schools, adding that government would need to subsidise tertiary education.

The governor said the state government was working hard to improve the standard and quality of education in the state.

Earlier, Olawale Balogun, the NANS Chairman in Ogun, explained that the students were not happy with the standard of education in the state.

Balogun urged the government to address the issue as a matter of urgency.

He specifically mentioned the delay in the commencement of   examination at MAPOLY, saying the action would affect the career of the students.

Balogun also decried the cancellation of the payment of Senior School Certificate Examination fee and the hike in the acceptance fee of Olabisi Onabanjo University ( OOU ), Ago-Iwoye.

Meanwhile, the Rector of the school, Prof. Oladele Itiola, has proceeded on his terminal leave.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr Taiwo Adeoluwa, announced the appointment of  Mr Ayodeji Salimon  as the Acting Rector of the school.
