The gesture was aimed at improving the lot of the women folk.

Thousands of market women and petty traders drawn from the three senatorial districts of the state thronged Onikolobo, venue of the event, to benefit from the free-interest soft loan made available by the former Ogun State gubernatorial candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, (UPN) Otunba Rotimi Paseda.

Addressing the beneficiaries of the maiden edition of the scheme at the occasion, the President of the PWF, Mrs Yemi Layeni, stated that the initiative was borne out of the need to ameliorate the poor living conditions of market women and petty traders who have been at the receiving end of the present excruciating economic conditions.

According to her, the loan scheme is a sign of good things to come from the initiator of the programme. He added that “the loan scheme was designed for both medium and small business enterprises with a view to assist owners of medium and small-scale enterprises and to banish poverty.

Group protests non-provision of pre-paid meters

The Ogun State chapter of Electricity Consumers’ Mega Forum has staged a protest against Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over its failure to provide prepaid metres for residents.

Over 100 of protesters who gathered at Otun Ota, a suburb of Ogun State in their yellow- branded T-Shirt on which was emblazoned “together we can chase out darkness’’ carried placards some of which read “Stop infringement of customers’ right’’, ‘’stop extorting customers and entire citizens’’, ‘’no prepaid metres-no payment’’,’’ it’s our right to have free prepaid metres’’, ‘’say no to electricity metres manipulations’’ darkness, say no to outrageous billing, no to estimations’’, say no to electricity supply slavery, among others.

The group urged the residents to reject any bills from IBEDC and restrain them from disconnecting lights until they provide prepaid metres to the residents. No prepaid metres-no payment, they insisted.

The group, through its Coordinator, Comrade Olajide Jayesimi, said it’s the right of the company to provide free prepaid metres to the residents. He noted that the company refused to do that because of extortion.

He said residents bought poles, cables, installed lights, using power generating sets to get lights, maintaining it and at the same time paying for exorbitant bills for IBEDC.

He noted that members of the group would restrain IBEDC officials from disconnecting wires as well as rejecting any bills from the company until they provide prepaid metres for every house. He noted that it is the duty of the electricity distribution companies to provide metres for electricity consumers. He said those that even paid are yet to get theirs.

Comrade Jayesimi said Nigerians were rejoicing when NEPA was sold to individuals, believing that would bring relief to residents but regretted that the reverse is the case.

He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the cry of customers on the issue of electricity, saying power failure is the greatest challenge affecting the economy.

The group’s state chairman, Comrade Adebola Adelekan, said the electricity distribution companies were adamant about distributing the metres to the public because it will expose their atrocities.

He said it had been discovered long ago that the companies are extorting the customers through estimation and outrageous billing system. This, he said, would no longer be tolerated.

He urged the Federal Government to help the masses fight against illegal extortion, power failure and outrageous billing by electricity distribution companies.

He said regular power supply would curb criminality and improve the economy.

  • No hope for Nigeria without agriculture, says Obasanjo

No hope for Nigeria without agriculture, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday declared that Nigeria may not be able to rise above its socio- economic woes and becomes great until it takes agriculture serious.

Obasanjo said agriculture has the capacity to develop entrepreneurs and create millions of jobs for the increasing Nigerian idle population, lamenting that the oil sector which seemed attractive, could only make few millionaires.

The Ota farmer spoke at the Youth Enterprises Summit organised by the Youth Development Centre, an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The ex – President who described agriculture as his “second career,” said not many countries in the world were able to attain greatness without recourse to agriculture, recalling that his administration opened doors of opportunity which made billionaires in Nigeria today.

“The truth is this, If we are going to have employment for a millions of youth in this country, it will be mainly in Agriculture business not in Oil and Energy. Oil and energy will give you money; will make few billionaires and multi billionaires.

“I opened the opportunity and they took advantage of it, and I thank them for taking advantage of it. All of those who took advantage of it, in oil and gas, banking, manufacturing and all that.

“All the billionaires we have today, they came out as a result of them taking advantage of those opportunities.

“And I am grateful to them that the opportunity that may administration created, they grabbed it and utilised it. One thing is to create opportunity another thing is to find people who will seize the opportunity and make what they have to make out of it.

“But let take agriculture, we will never make it in this country until we take agriculture seriously. There are not many countries that have made it without taking agriculture seriously,” Obasanjo said.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion and Deputy Chief Coordinator, OOPL, Ayodele Aderinwa painted a scary picture of poverty awaiting Nigeria and other African nations due to the growing youth population.

Reeling out statistics, Ayodele predicted that African youths population may hit 850million by 2050, saying the wealth creation via entrepreneurship is the way to tackle poverty.

He said poverty alongside other problems had been with African from pre-colonial era, but all challenges were fought and won but poverty war stands undefeated.

“Poverty connotes darkness and to fight the darkness. So, there is need to shine the light of wealth creation on poverty’s darkness,” he said.

The Keynote speaker, Tope Shonubi who spoke on “Youth and Entrepreneurship in Nigeria: Which way forward” and submitted that Nigerian youths have enteyrpreneurship skills, but lack discipline.

Shonubi urged youths to be consistent, humble, self-confident and embrace entreneurship with a view to adding values to human lives.

  • Now that Remo has Akarigbo-elect

    Now that Remo has Akarigbo-elect

The waiting was indeed long and tortuous for the people; a people whose passionate love for their ancestral root seems to be the making of their individual and collective destiny. They perceive their destiny as strongly tied to the well-being of the land. A land they believe can never be well while the stool of the Akarigbo is not well or vacant.

This was the invaluable level of patriotism that seemed to pitch the people of Remo land against just anything that seemed to prevent the filling of their paramount stool of traditional monarchy for over one year after the death of His Royal Highness, Oba Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo, Erinjugbo II, the immediate past Akarigbo of Remo in Ogun State.

It was also the mental trigger of the immediate ecstasy that reverberated round the Remo world on the announcement of Prince Babatunde Ajayi by the Remo Kingmakers as the winner of a long-awaited royal election which protracted countdown almost harmed the land.

Thursday, August 31, 2017 has gone down in history as an epoch-making occasion not just for its importance as an opportunity of rebirth for the people of Remo descent, but also for its status as a possible beginning of a new order in the Gateway State.

The widely-acclaimed sophistication of the Yoruba race really manifested in the overall disposition and behaviour of the Remo people throughout the waiting period; a period of uncertainty whose worst side-effects were flying rumours from within and outside the Remo land.

Such rumours actually ranged from the comical to the ludicrously annoying.

But, the good news is that the Remo ancestors had the luxury of an uninterrupted peaceful sleep beneath a land scorched endlessly by the heat of rumours flying and crashing into the typically serene atmosphere of Remo land like an ill-fated aircraft.

That the populace, dominated by a highly sensitive youth and which traditionally abhors and dreads prolonged vacancy on the Akarigbo stool not just as an aberration but also a loathed taboo, was able to manage and restrict its tension-filled conflict to the level of a transient family disagreement is an indication of civility.

Perhaps, the seeming impression of disunity among the Ruling Family of Torungbuwa, the entitled Ruling House courtesy of the Akarigbo traditional zoning arrangement, created by the parade of star-studded candidates for the coveted throne, was a major cause of gossips.

Such a parade of world-class candidates was unprecedented in the history of Remo and the entire Yoruba land in a kingship race. A set of 19 candidates made up of people whose profiles may be considerably said to point to personalities who are once-in-a-life-time heroes.

A royal tango that featured three reputable professors, two chattered accountants of great pedigree, one of whom flaunts a law background that extends beyond the surface level of LL.B and many other personalities as contenders was, and is still awesome.

The initial excitement that greeted the unveiling of each of the stars whose likelihood promised a better tomorrow for the average indigene and resident of Remo soon metamorphosed into a fire that scorched the entire land of River Ogun, far beyond the Remo enclaves.

No thanks to the unavoidable confusion created in the psychology of a people that must choose only one among a set that consisted of not even a single insignificant or unworthy material that could be walked over. And, expectedly, resulting alignments and re-alignments in the relationship of the people and stakeholders with the candidates further oiled the untiring rumour mills.

The decision of the state government to suspend the selection process soon after it was initiated was hardly rightly perceived as a wise application of the brake to prevent an already turbulent ship from sinking. Governor Ibikunle Amosun chose to defy Remo people in their burning desire to get to their destination-the Akarigbo Palace.

The emergence of Prince Ajayi, a legal luminary and Certified Chartered Accountant, as the next paramount ruler of Remo in a selection process that was devoid of the slightest hitch, manipulation or rancour represented a meaningful anti-climax.

It was a family affair, not only for the Torungbuwa Ruling House, but also for the singular ancestral blood-tie shared by a people spread into over 100 towns and villages and which defines them as a single kingdom with a common destiny.

To the discerning, it was the common destiny of the Remo people that necessitated their unity in joy over the Akarigbo selection. Surely, even the blind saw clearly the divided interests and varied preferences of the people during the protracted, tension-filled countdown.

However, the most passionate desire of every patriotic indigene of the Remo Kingdom has been to see the translation of its immeasurable contribution to national socio-economic and political development into concrete growth of the kingdom.

Therefore, the joy that has just ushered in Prince Ajayi as the Akarigbo-elect is a communal acknowledgement of the fact that Remo and its destiny remain indivisible.

However, the perception of Akarigbo’s emergence as a harbinger of hope for a better Remo land can come to fruition if all stakeholders co-operate with the incoming monarch to advance the Remo cause, particularly through youth and infrastructure development. This is a non-negotiable necessity in view of that fact that progress holds the key to socio-economic prosperity of Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general.

No truth to fuel scarcity in Ogun – DPR

    • Urges consumers not to panic

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Wednesday said there was no truth to the information making the round that “scarcity of fuel” had hit Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and Sagamu area of the state.

The Nation gathered that the rumoured scarcity of petroleum in the state was fueled by the United Labour Congress (ULC) strike which a section of the oil workers joined on Monday, but later suspended on Wednesday.

The DPR urged consumers in Ogun  not to resort to “panic purchase” as there were enough petroleum products in all the retail outlets visited in the state by its field Operatives, dismissed the scarcity and attendant worries as one induced by “rumours.”

The DPR Chief Inspection Officer, Lagos Zonal office, Umaru Mohammed, made this known to reporters in Abeokuta, after he led a team of officers to inspect over a dozen filling stations in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and its environs.

Umaru added that the team elected to take a proactive step in line with the DPR mandate to “do a general check on distribution pattern and volume of sales going on in the retail outlets in Ogun state to guard against hoarding of the products.”

He said: “the rumours have gone round that there is no fuel. People said tank farms are not loading. We are trying to be proactive and tell the public that there should be no panic buying. And we have a lot of products in the retail outlets. We have gone round to see for ourselves and also asked the taxi drivers.

“We want to assure the public that all these are mere rumours. There should not be panic purchase. Things are normal.”
