  • 5 die, 2 injure in auto crash in Ogun

    Five persons were killed in an auto crash on the Sagamu – Ogijo road in Ogun, while two others were injured in an accident involving a truck and a Toyota camry car.

    The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, made this known in a sktatement in Abeokuta on Friday.

    He said that the accident happened on Thursday night around Igbara town stretch of the road.

    Akinbiyi, who attributed the cause to malfunctioned break system and excessive speed said it involved a Toyota Camry Car marked AAA 889 ER and a Truck with registration number KNA 346 XA.

    The TRACE Spokesman said that the driver of the truck had trouble controlling the wheel when his brake malfunctioned and rammed into the Camry car that was parked by the road side.

    “The truck had a break failure due to over speeding and rammed into the Camry car parked by the roadside.

    “All the five passengers in the Camry car, including the driver died on the spot and their bodies have been deposited at the morgue of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH).

    “The injured were the driver and a passenger in the truck, who are now at the Ogijo Divisional Police Headquarters as well as the
    vehicles,” Akinbiyi said. (NAN)

  • NYSC appeals corps members for improved welfare

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) has appealed to employers of corps members to provide standard employment opportunities to those serving in their establishments.

    The Ogun State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr John Okpo, made the appeal on Thursday during deliberations at the 2018 Corps Employers workshop held in Abeokuta, Ogun.

    He also advised the employers to allow their corps members access to medical facilities in their places of primary assignments.

    Okpo said that the provision of basic benefits would improve the self worth of the corps members and enable them integrate fully into such establishments.

    “Employers should see corps members, first as human beings, rather than mere ad-hoc staff and as such must ensure they are well-catered for.

    “The best way to motivate and get the best from your staff is by making them feel wanted and comfortable in the course of their duties.

    “Corps members should be provided with medical facilities as available for permanent staff.

    “Employers of corps members should, likewise, strive to give permanent employment to corps members who performed reasonably well during the service year.”

    Okpo said that the laws establishing the NYSC scheme required the employers of corps members to see themselves as partners and stakeholders in the development and training of youths.

    “Your actions or inactions can either destroy or uplift the dreams of the founding fathers of the scheme,” he said.

    He said that the workshop explored issues relating to corps members and their employers.

    The workshop had as its theme: “Tackling Emerging Challenges in Youth Corps Administration through Greater NYSC/Stakeholder Participation.”

    The chairman of the State NYSC Governing Board, Mr Afolabi Afuape, assured the NYSC that the government would continue to discharge its obligations to the scheme.

    Afuape also the Ogun State Commissioner for Youths and Sports said,  “Corps members are change agents, youths with abundant energies  and awesome talents.

    “ When their welfare is prioritized, their level of productivity knows no bounds.

    “It is my fervent belief that all stakeholders will look into the recommendations made with the ultimate aim of moving the scheme forward.”

    He said that the NYSC management would, routinely, monitor employers of corps members to ensure that they provided accommodation for NYSC members serving with them.

  • Ogun Institute expels two students for indecency

    The Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa said yesterday it had expelled two students for indecency.

    The Rector, Dr. Olufunke Akinkurolere, who spoke at the matriculation of about 2, 000 students for the 2018 academic year, said others were suspended for offences.

    She warned the new students not to engage in activities capable of truncating their academic pursuits.

    The rector said the institution had zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractices, rape, indecent dressing and other anti-social behaviour.

    She said the management would not hesitate to wield the big stick on erring students, to ensure discipline.

    Akinkurolere said violation of rules and regulations would attract sanctions ranging from suspension to rustication and outright expulsion.

    The rector advised them to take advantage of the school’s entrepreneurship programme to acquire skills to become self-employed.

    “The entrepreneurship programme has been designed to assist students in acquiring skills needed to be employers of labour, rather than seeking unavailable government jobs.”

    Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Mrs. Modupe Mujota urged the students to concentrate on their studies, to become future leaders.

    She noted that with the influx of industries into the state, graduates of the institute would be of high demand in future.

  • Police arrests `lunatic’ who killed pupils in Ogun

    The Police Command in Ogun on Wednesday, said arrested the suspected lunatic who hacked to death two pupils of St. John’s Anglican School, Agodo in Waterside Local Government Area of the state.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated this in a statement in Abeokuta.

    The suspect, name withheld, had on Monday stormed the primary school at break time and hacked to death two pupils: Mubarak Kalesowo and Sunday Obituyi, who were in kindergarten class.

    He was said to have fled the scene immediately after he carried out the deadly act.

    Oyeyemi, however, said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday around Agodo community, through the combined effort of policemen attached to Ogbere Area and local hunters.

    The manhunt for the suspect, Oyeyemi he said, followed orders by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu for the capture of suspect as soon as possible.

    Oyeyemi explained that the suspect who was found in a bush initially resisted arrest and tried to attack the policemen with a machete.

    “In compliance with the Commissioner of Police’s order, the Area Commander mobilised policemen and local hunters for the manhunt of the suspect.

    “Their efforts paid off on Wednesday, when the suspect was seen in a bush around the community.

    “While they wanted to arrest him, the suspect who was brandishing a sharp cutlass, attacked them consequent upon which he was shot and injured in the leg.

    ‘’He was later taken to hospital for medical treatment.

    “Meanwhile, Iliyasu has directed that the case be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for proper investigation,” Oyeyemi,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • Amosun rues ‘unfair’ Federal allocation to Ogun

    The Ogun State government yesterday said Federal Government’s revenue allocation sharing formula has not been fair to the state.

    It noted that what the state collected as allocations was not commensurate with the quantum of what it contributed to the Federation Account.

    Governor Ibikunle Amosun addressed reporters in Abeokuta, the state capital, ahead of next week’s fourth Investors’ Forum of the state.

    The governor said the state generated about 34 per cent of non-oil revenue but ranked 26th in the sharing formula of allocation from the Federation Account.

    He said 304 companies had opened shops in the state since the beginning of his administration seven years ago with a minimum investment of $50 million.

    According to him, 148 companies with investments capital ranging from $200 million to $2 billion were among those that berthed in Ogun State.

    Amosun said he supported the restructuring of the country in a way that each state would receive allocations on the basis of the percentage of its contribution to the Federation Account.

    The governor also expressed dissatisfaction with the statistics released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on personal income tax, saying his administration would forward a protest letter to the agency.

    He said the state had become an industrial hub of the country, adding that its target was for the state to become the hub of Africa.

    According to him, this year’s edition of the Investors’ Forum will focus on agriculture and its value chain, industry and technology.

     

     

     

  • Ogun targets N10bn IGR monthly

    The Ogun government says it plans to increase its monthly Internally Generated Revenue ( IGR ) from seven billion naira  to N10 billion.

    Gov. Ibikunle Amosun  stated this in Abeokuta on Tuesday  at a press conference held ahead of the fourth  edition of its annual Investment Forum scheduled to hold between March  20 and March   21.

    Amosun said that the state’s  monthly IGR,  which was N750 million when he assumed office in 2011,  had since increased to seven billion naira.

    He attributed the increase to the success of the rebuilding mission embarked upon by his administration.

    The governor, who described the state as the industrial capital of Nigeria, said  his administration has  set N10 billion as the new target for its monthly IGR.

    He also said his administration had opened up the state  for business after creating conducive environment which had continued to attract new businesses.

    The governor recalled that Ogun,  which was in 2011 rated as 26th in terms of ease of doing business among Nigerian  states in  a World Bank Report, disclosed that  the state had moved up to the  second position  by 2014.

    Amosun also said  that no fewer than  304 new firms had since began business in the state.

    He said 148 of these firms had each invested between $200 million and $2 billion in the state while the remaining 146 firms had each invested up to $50 million.

    According to him, the state has now entered into a phase of consolidating its gains and accelerating  growth by focusing on key sectors of education, agriculture and technology.

    He said the Investors’ Forum would be attended by both local and foreign investors, adding that the programme would enable the state to showcase the vast investment opportunities in the state.

  • Ogun engages firm to manage waste

    The Ogun State Government has engaged Solous MRF 1 Limited, a subsidiary of West Africa Engineering, to manage waste, as part of measures to promote a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.

    According to a statement by the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, the service provider, which specialises in waste management, recycling and conversion of waste to revisable energy, is expected to manage municipal solid waste cycle, including waste collection, processing and disposal.

    The statement noted that the partnership would enhance effectiveness, efficiency and optimal performance in solid waste management in the state, with the goal of creating an outstanding waste management sector.

    It stated that the government had on February 12, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the service provider,  followed by a joint technical meeting on February 20.

    The statement added that the ministry would provide the technical support to ensure that the service provider achieve its mandates as stated in the MoU, noting that the partnership reiterates the government’s commitment to actualising its plan for an enviable environmental and infrastructural development of the state.

  • Ogun compensates 232 Igbesa residents

    In preparation for the commencement of construction on the 10-kilometre Lusada-Igbesa Road, the Ogun State Government has compensated owners of 232 structures affected by the project.

    Speaking on the occasion held at Salvation Army Primary School, Igbesa, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Olamilekan Adegbite, an architect, said this was the first time since 2011 that compensation would be brought to the community of the beneficiaries.

    “The state government, in its magnanimity, has decided to bring this compensation to Igbesa to ease the difficulty the beneficiaries might encounter, if they come to Abeokuta to collect their bank drafts,’’ he said

    The Commissioner, through his media aide, Mr. Temidayo Agida, hinted that the road, which would be completed between six and eight months would enhance accessibility and improve the livelihood of the people of the area.

    He implored residents to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the speedy completion of the project.

    One of the recipients, Mr. Imonite Lucky, expressed gratitude to the government for the gesture of coming to pay compensation at the loan.

    He said the project would bring development to the town.

    Ogun customs intercepts N168m smuggled goods

    Smuggled goods worth over N168 million including a brand new Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle 2018 model worth N51 million, thousands of bags of rice among others have been intercepted by the Ogun State Customs Command.

    Speaking with news men at the Idiroko Area Customs Command in Ipokia Local Government Area, the Controller of Customs in Ogun State, Mr Sani Madugu said the his men and officers would sustain the current tempo of the anti-smuggling campaign of the command.

    ” It is pertinent to inform you that within the last two weeks, we have sustained the tempo promised in our anti-smuggling drive. During the period under review, the tireless efforts by the officers and men of the Command yielded a total of 13 second hand (Tokunbo) vehicles;12 means of conveyance, 21 motorcycles, 1,168 bags of rice(50 kg each), 221 kegs of vegetable oil(25 liters), five sacks of second hand shoes and two sacks of second hand bags with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N153,858,579,153 at Idiroko axis  of Ogun Customs Command.

    ”Most spectacular among the seizures is brand new Range Rover SUV (Velar) 2018 model seized and tagged ”the seizure of the month, the said vehicle has  DPV of N51,285,154.”

    The vehicle, according Madugu was intercepted from suspected smugglers who fled on sighting customs men around the Ifo axis of the State.

    ” Despite the aforementioned event and given the tottering nature of the operational environment, we will not relent, we will continue to stand firm and resolute in discharging the statutory responsibilities bestowed upon us as a service with dedication, selflessness and uncompromising commitment.”

    ‘’In spite of the incessant harassment of our men by the smugglers, we will not relent our efforts and we will not be intimidated. We are therefore calling on well-meaning Nigerians to support us in this anti-smuggling campaign.”

    Ogun reunites 22 additional Libya returnees with families

    The Ogun State government has again reunited 22 additional Libya returnees with their families.

    The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, who welcomed the returnees at the June 12 Cultural Centre at Kuto in Abeokuta, the state capital, said they comprised 19 females, one male and two children.

    The commissioner said Governor Ibikunle Amosun had approved a token to facilitate their journeys to their homes.

    He recalled that the state, in January, received 64 returnees from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and reunited them with their relatives, adding that the government would ensure that the fresh returnees are safely reunited with their loved ones as well.

    In a statement yesterday by his Press Officer, Mr. Goke Gbadamosi, the commissioner expressed optimism that the lessons the returnees learnt during their travail would deter other youths from trying to cross to Europe at all cost.

    Oyeleye said: “We are happy that the returnees have been brought back safely. As you can see, most of them are being welcomed by their relatives whom we had earlier contacted to come and receive them.

    “This is the second batch. As you know, we received 64 of our people earlier in January. We hope to continue with this process until all our people have been safely returned from Libya.”

    The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Kunle Osota, thanked God for sparing the lives of the returnees.

    He assured them that they would be well rehabilitated and properly reintegrated into the society.

    Osota urged the returnees to be part of Nigeria’s positive evolution, adding that it is essential for them to contribute their quota to building the nation.

    One of the returnees, Miss Christiana Olatoye, described her experience and those of several others as harrowing.

    She said the evacuation showed that the Federal and state governments cared about the safety of Nigerians abroad.
