‘PDP will take over Ogun in 2019’

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, is optimistic that the party will return to power next year. The former member of the House of Assembly spoke on the intra-party crisis in the chapter, its prospects and other partisan issues. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN met him in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Why is your executive committee still operating from outside the party’s secretariat?

Secretariat is a mere structure. It has nothing to do with the party administration. It does not make our executive less authentic. The Sikirulahi Ogundele–led Peoples Democratic Party executive in Ogun State is legitimate and recognised by the national secretariat of the PDP. If Buruji Kashamu believes holding on to the secretariat will confer legitimacy on the so-called executive led by his puppet, Bayo Dayo, it will soon dawn on him that he is just wasting his time. At the appropriate time, the security agencies would do the needful. We would not use force to take possession of the secretariat, because we want to avoid bloodshed.

    Where do you operate from?

We have a temporary state secretariat where we carry out day-to-day management of the party. We have documents to work with. In fact, I’m just coming from there; we have just finished our executive committee’s meeting. The PDP national secretariat recognised our secretariat; we receive official communications through the secretariat address. We are law abiding; we are for peace, no matter the provocation being perpetrated by the Kashamu group.

Did your executive influence the suspension of Senator Buruji Kashamu by the national executive?

The suspension is over; it was one month; it lapsed in December. It is not over for him; he has to face the national disciplinary committee of our party in Abuja for appropriate sanctions against his anti-party activities. The PDP is a disciplined party. No one is above the party’s constitution; members must subject themselves to the party’s guidelines and constitution.

Can you still work with the Kashamu group?

My plan is to run a united party in Ogun. Despite that, we have to be extremely careful with Kashamu. We don’t want people that will go and disclose our strategies to the opposition parties. In any case, when we get to the bridge we shall cross it. When he is through with the disciplinary committee, we shall know what to do.

We started having problems when Buruji Kashamu came up with a deceit. We found out later that Kashamu was out to use our political fortunes to enrich his business interest through a diabolical organisation he called ‘Omo Ilu Foundation’. He forced many members of the party to swear to an oath of allegiance to his leadership. He took the party to court on certain issues. He used court injunctions to take over the party structure. What Kashamu did to Ogun PDP was the height of deceit. He is on his own. He should retrace his step. You can’t foist yourself on people no matter your wealth. You can earn leadership, you don’t buy it. The Ogun State Chapter of the PDP under my leadership will continue to preach peace and unity through constructive engagements with all aggrieved members of the party in order to achieve the sole aim of winning not only the 2019 governorship election, but in all other elective positions to give the people of Ogun State the  good governance they deserve.

But, the Bayo Dayo group is claiming to be the authentic executive…

The highest organ of the party had dissolved the Bayo Dayo-led PDP executive in Ogun State and conducted congresses from where the new executive headed by me emerged. Kashamu should stop flexing muscles over the former executive. Bayo Dayo-led executive has become history; no amount of threat, blackmail or court injunction will bring it back.

The Bayo-Dayo group challenged the appointment of Southwest National Vice Chairman. What is your reaction?

How can they challenge a party official that was validly elected at the party’s national convention? The man paid for nomination form; went through party screening and got elected at the party’s convention held in Abuja on December 9, 2017. It was a stupid action. How can you say someone who went through the process of the party election should be removed?

What are the chances of Ogun PDP in 2019?

Our party, the PDP, will bounce back to power in 2019. We will win not only in Ogun State but at the centre given the high-level insensitivity of the APC administration. People will compare the cost of living under the PDP government to what it is under the present government, especially the price of petrol and food items. All this will be taken into consideration before the electorate cast their votes. Before anybody can thumb print the ballot paper, I am sure he or she will consider the hardship the APC government has put us through.

Have you zoned your governorship ticket to a particular district?

We have decided to zone the governorship ticket to Ogun East. The PDP took the decision as part of political strategies to win next general elections in the state. The party cannot afford to gamble on 2019 hence the strategic decision to offer the governorship slot to the Ijebu axis of the state. The PDP had zoned the governorship in two previous elections to Ogun West but lost. Now, Egba is occupying the office, we want to try Ijebu this time around. The people of Ogun West- the Yewa should speak in one voice and let disunity stop among them, then, they will be in a position of strength to produce governor.

    Have you endorsed a candidate?

Not at all, we have many aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket. Many of them are coming out; we will encourage them by creating a level playing ground. The field is open for everybody. They will go through primary. All we are interested in is for the best candidate to emerge.

What is your advice to the electorate?

I sympathise with the people of Ogun for the poor management of governance by the APC government. They should remain calm and steadfast. PDP is coming back to restore the lost glory of the state in 2019.

    Buhari greets Amosun at 60

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday joined all members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and citizens of Ogun State in congratulating Governor Ibikunle Amosun on his 60th birthday.

President Buhari felicitated with all the family, friends and professional colleagues of the visionary political leader, legislator and administrator.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, he said that Amosun’s foray into public service has continued to stimulate and inspire the younger generation on the value of patriotism and the beauty of selflessly living for the good of humanity.

The President believed Amosun’s rich experience in the private sector, broad mindedness, wise counsels and penchant for always treading the path of peace and greater good for majority contributed to the stability enjoyed in his state, and the attendant developmental strides in education, health and security.

As a second term governor, President Buhari affirmed that Amosun’s courage and pacesetting strides in pushing for improved life for the underprivileged and unrelenting position on the unity and stability of Nigeria are legacies that posterity will continually remember and celebrate.

He prayed that the almighty God will bless Amosun, grant him more years of good health, strength and wisdom to serve his country.

  • Ogun’s rice pyramid

    Ogun’s rice pyramid

SIR: On December 21, 2017, Ogun State government held a celebratory homage to our agricultural initiative and progress just in time for the end of the year. In MITROS rice our collective effort brought us 100,000 bags of rice!

As one of the farmers involved in the entire process, I am aware that a point a decision was made to historicize this agricultural landmark in our dear state by paying visual homage to Egypt and the pyramids of Kano.  Building a pyramid is a feat of engineering genius, an appropriate representation for the work of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

The optics of representation did not, however, mean the exact replication of the engineering mastery of Egypt. So we tested the engineering efficiencies of our own pyramids, before the actual construction and display. We wanted to ensure that our pyramid of rice was strong and the safety of our dignitaries was taken care of. As we worked, we did several test runs one afternoon in broad daylight; and in open view of the public.  No secrets, nothing to hide.  We tested the structure with unbranded bags of rice, measuring weight and other dimensions to ensure stability and geometric efficiencies.  We took pictures of the work in progress, recording different angles and phases of the pyramid.

These pictures we exchanged among ourselves, some of us excited farmers and for our engineering teams, to assess work progress. Unknown to us, this level of conceptualization would befuddle some mindless nay-sayers. Alas, it is now these work pictures that are being bandied around by the idle minds.

Whether they like it or not, Ogun State is the story of affirmed success, for where were they when Governor Amosun renewed the landscape of our state, building new roads, creating a new network of possibilities for industrial growth?  Are these roads imaginary or real entities that have also provided the ease of travel and transportation for our people?  What tree were they climbing as Governor Amosun built the state’s foreign exchange earnings? Ogun State, our state, now owns 75% of the Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), in Nigeria.  We are rated as number one among the 36 states of the federation in the percentage improvement of the Internally Generated Revenues between 2014 and 2017.

As a farmer who contributed to that success story, I cannot be swayed or distracted by naysayers. The best I can do for them is to advice that they find a new pastime and make effort to be part of the march of progress. We encourage them to move away from mindlessly hopping from tree to tree, howling and hauling falsehoods.

Four die as car rams into Okada in Ogun

Four persons, including a cyclist, were killed yesterday on Ijebu-Igbo road in Ogun State.

  • My detractors behind fake rice rumour in Ogun, says Amosun

My detractors behind fake rice rumour in Ogun, says Amosun

Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, yesterday said those behind the Ogun State fake rice rumour are political detractors. He described the situation as sad and deliberate attempts to de-market the state for selfish reasons. He was reacting to reports on social media alleging that his administration mounted sandbags with few bags of rice as rice pyramid to deceive the people.

The report had claimed that the Mitros rice was not available in any shop in Ogun State, and no rice farm anywhere nor factory where the rice is being bagged in the state. The governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Dayo Adeneye, at the opening session of the 2018 Media Workshop of the State House Press Corps in Abeokuta with the theme: “The Role of the Media in Peace Building: 2019 in Perspective”, said that it was wrong for anybody to deliberately run down the state.

While assuring of government’s commitment to the rice project, he said the harvest this year will surpass that of last year as the farmers now know that the government, serving as off takers, will buy whatever they produce and sell at N11,000 to the public. “I’m just urging our colleagues; we were able to take you round and you saw for yourselves what obtains, you saw the processes, the farms, you saw the farmers, you saw how grateful they were to this administration for empowering them.

“They were also grateful to the federal government’s programme IFAD, FADAMA for empowering them and helping them to achieve what they have been able to achieve with MITROS RICE. You also saw the processing plant, the rice mill, the bagging process and all that. Some people are just being mischievous because we are approaching election year and they are trying to score cheap political points.

“The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Chairman of the Presidential Task force on Agriculture came to verify things for themselves. Rather than encouraging this administration to do more, some political detractors think they can score cheap political points by de-marketing this state and publishing false and fake stories about MITROS RICE,” he said

The guest lecturers at the workshop were Dr. Wale Aderemi, a Senior Lecturer at the Lagos State University (LASU) and Dr. Abubakar Kari, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology, University of Abuja.

  • 1500 babies benefit from health programmes

No fewer than 1500 babies in Ado Odo /Ota area of Ogun State have benefited from the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) and the  State Community Health Insurance Scheme tagged. ‘ARAYA’  to provide qualitative primary health care delivery.

A Senior Nursing Officer at Sango-Ijoko Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mrs Comfort Ojodu disclosed this in an interview with journalists in her Office in Sango-Ota.

”We had over 1,000 participants for the Maternal New Born and Child health Week (MNCHW) which the first lady, Mrs Amosun came to personally administer drugs. Participants were drawn from all parts of Ado-Odo Ota which included Ijoko, Agbara/Igbesa, Ado-Odo, Atan/ Iju LCDAs and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area,’’ Ojodu said.

She added that during the MNCHW, babies under one day to five years were immunised, while vitamin A was given to both mothers and children.

The health practitioner advised government to use incentives to further attract more people to the ARAYA programme, disclosing that the donation of the first lady during the last exercise had led to increase in the number of women who visited health centres for health care services.

‘’Incentives is very good in attracting people. The last visit by the first lady who distributed gift items boosted attendance and increased activities at the clinics. If government can purchase baby accessories and give to nursing mothers, it will further attract more mothers to bring their babies to the clinics. This will allow the programme reach its set target,’’ she noted.
