  • Ohanaeze laments Nigeria’s porous security

Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has lamented the “apparent helplessness of the nation’s security forces in the face of the onslaught of Boko Haram on defenceless Nigerians”.
In a statement issued in Enugu by the Media Adviser to the President General of Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo, it said the weakness of and ineffectual resistance to the dastardly acts of the insurgents was traceable to the country’s dysfunctional security apparatus.
The organization was reacting to the recent killing of humanitarian worker, Hauwa Leman.
Nwodo said that as long as the headship of the nation’s security agencies were determined by tribal origin and analogue security chiefs who have their tenures illegally extended, the forage by the insurgents would be hardly contained.

The President General further stated that as long as security interface with foreign intelligence are selectively adhered to and
historical relationships between the Commander in Chief and Boko Haram do not recommend radical rather than soft approaches, so long will Boko Haram continue to ridicule our military prowess and make the world look at our security policies with skepticism and disdain.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of all those who have met their deaths in the hands of the insurgents.
  • Ohanaeze, Igbo youths laud Atiku’s decision

People of South-East geopolitical zone have been celebrating the announcement of two-term Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in next year’s general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as his running mate.

“We the Ohanaeze Ndigbo have already made it clear that we are not interested in the Presidency or Vice-Presidency of Nigeria unless you restructure Nigeria.
“If you put an Igbo man as a President, there is little or nothing he can do in developing the south east because his wings are clipped by the wages of confusion in his side.
“But be that as it may, Atiku is the one who has been hammering on restructuring. So, we have absolute faith in him that he is going to restructure Nigeria and if he does that and with people like Peter Obi on his side, that is where the expertise comes in”.
“Peter Obi is a technocrat; he will help to revitalize the economy of this country. This is all we want because if you are not an expert and you are into politics, you bring the expert close to you not base on ethnic or religious sentiments.
“You already know that Obi was former Governor of Anambra State for two terms, and that is not a no mean experience and he has been a financial guru before he came into politics. So, he will help Atiku revitalize the economy.

The group further said that the zone ‘has better personalities like Peter Obi, Ngozi Okonjo Iwuala, Sen Dr Ike Ekweremadu and Sen Enyinnaya Abaribe who are fit for the Vice Presidential job’

  • When will Afenifere elders allow the John Nwodos of Yoruba land assume leadership roles?

It is also tragic that during every emergency, these elders intervene only to introduce ethnic, and religious dimensions to already very complicated situations.

John Nnia Nwodo (Chief), urbane, brilliant even seminal, lawyer, economist and now, President-General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, was a student, later Student Union President, at the University of Ibadan in the early 70’s when I was an Assistant Registrar at the same university. A former minister of the Federal Republic, John is in his mid sixties. This, nonetheless, is the gentleman our highly regarded elders in Afenifere who, by the grace of God are mostly in their 80’s and 90’s, happily have for company as they shuttle  between Aba, Enugu, and Markudi, hardly ever Ibadan,  spewing oppositional politics suffused  with incomparable ethnic baiting.

I never thought a day would come when I would have to write on what Gboyega  Adepitan, my friend, and President of my Christ’s- School, Ado – Ekiti set of ’63, recently described as  the “distasteful aspect of these associates of Awo aligning with the very forces that heartily worked against the Avatar’s political ambition”.

Or how exactly was Obasanjo or Ndigbo helpful to Awo?

Not too long ago, at his prompting, via a phone call in response to one of my articles, I got engaged in a discussion on this issue with Dr Amos Akingba, a highly regarded Afenifere chieftain. Rather than write on the  subject, even now, I am this Sunday,  out of respect, yielding the column to Dr Sikiru Eniola, an Associate Professor at the Ekiti State University, Ado – Ekiti, whose article will, however, treat Afenifere only as a subtext of  the totally unhelpful politicking of some Nigerian elders who call themselves Southern Leaders.

    Happy reading.

Our ‘elder statesmen’ and the state of the nation

In the history of nations, elders are known to be the last line of moral, ethical, social, even political thought, during both good and bad times. In Africa, especially, the place of elders is highly regarded. It is, therefore, no surprise they are generically called elder statesmen.

In Nigeria for instance, we have a long list of elders who have distinguished themselves in the successive scenarios of our national history. Among them are, in no particular order, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe,  Alhaji Tafawa Balewa,  Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief  S.L Akintola, Mallam Aninu Kano, Madam Funmilayo Kuti,  Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, to mention but  a few.  Our minds naturally go to these greats when we sing of “the labour of our heroes past” in our National Anthem. Others have risen stoutly to stabilise the country in  times  of great anxiety, a recent example being the General  Abdulsalami Abubakar  National Peace Committee which did a yeoman’s job to calm nerves during the 2015 Presidential election when just about anything could have happened .

Unfortunately, events since then have revealed the ugliest aspect of our national history. All of a sudden, ethnocentrism and religious bigotry have taken over all the values of nationalism and patriotism which had hitherto guided the country with a particular group of elders spewing these inanities the most, without sparring a thought for the survival of the country. They assume extremist, and incendiary positions far in excess of even the restive youths whose future they claim they are fighting to protect. They take extreme positions on practically all matters  without offering a single solution out of the impasse except parroting restructuring, important as it is, as if it is a silver bullet for all of Nigeria’s problems .

Nigerians are, however, not unaware of the fact that these are mostly losers in the 2015 election who still find it extremely difficult to concede defeat. Their actions and utterances, are inimical to the country as they undermine national security.

Only last week, President Muhammadu Buhari was at the UN where he addressed the General Assembly like other heads of member states. In his speech he, among other things, alluded to the fact that incursions by armed militias into Nigeria have been worsened by wars in our neighbouring countries, a fact which has, in turn, further complicated the war against the Boko Haram insurgency. He said that what this situation calls for is greater joint efforts with these neighbours as well as increased foreign support to defeat the terrorist group. While the world understood him, not so the aggressive naysayers who, back home, had regressed to their now traditional opposition mode.

In their reaction, these unelected elders, all of them 2015 campaigners for President Jonathan, and under the perpetual leadership of Chief Edwin Clark, viciously condemned the speech, branding it an affirmation of the president’s failure on national security. Yet, you will search in vain for their advice to the president on this crucial matter.

This is a government which, at inception,  descended heavily on Boko Haram, heavily degrading it, and freeing several Borno State Local Government Areas  from its  strangle hold whereas their 2015 candidate, Jonathan, had instructed  the filtering away of 2.1 billion dollars meant for equipping the Nigerian military against the vermins. Boko Haram was greatly decimated, rooted out of its Sambisa forest base and had to resort to attacks on soft targets. But how would these elders see anything good Buhari did since that will make a mess of their efforts to de – market him ahead the 2019 elections?

Even while both the US and the UK already alerted the World to the fact that Boko Haram is now an affiliate of such deadly groups as ISIS, these elders still continue to deride the president’s efforts.

The action of this amorphous group attracted my attention because at the onset of the Buhari administration, it became known  that huge sums of money budgeted for the purchase of  military ware, meant to enhance the combat readiness  of the Nigerian Armed Forces, had all  been diverted and  stolen with impunity thus  enhancing Boko Haram’s ability to inflict maximum damage on our fighting forces, leading to  several  casualties  among  our fighting forces. How fair is it then that supporters of the man who instructed the diversion of the funds are the very ones now calling Buhari names? It is instructive that during that period of national mourning, when our patriotic fighting men and women were falling in their numbers, Nigerians did not hear a word of condemnation of the thieves from these elders. Indeed, some of them openly  solidarised with those who were exposed, or arrested, for illegally benefiting from the blood money claiming that Buhari’s anti corruption war was targeted only at the opposition.

I condemn, in strong terms, the growing tendency of this group to continue to create international embarrassment for the country out of their hatred for President Buhari. Their actions would have been considered treasonable had the President not viewed them with his usual philosophical calmness.

It is also tragic that during every emergency, these elders intervene only to introduce ethnic, and religious dimensions to already very complicated situations.

It is time we let them know that they represent only themselves and not the people of Southern Nigeria, or those of the Middle Belt whose mandate they neither sought nor were ever given.

  • Ohaneze warns PDP against denying South-East VP ticket

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council on Thursday re-iterated its earlier warning to the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) that it risks losing the support of the South East if it fails to zone the Vice presidency to the South East zone.

The group stated this in Abakaliki after its meeting.

The meeting chaired by its President, Okechukwu Isiguzoro met and discussed extensively issues affecting Ndigbo especially as  regards the 2019 general elections.

The statement signed by Obinna Achionye and  Alex Okemiri, Deputy Vice President General  National Vice President (Ebonyi state) respectively of the group, accused the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, of tactically avoiding the issue.

It warned that the party may loose the elections if it fails to do the right thing.

The group further asked the party to select any of the governors in the South East or Mr Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra state for the Vice presidential ticket.

It warned that it will mobile the youths of the zone for All Progressive Congress (APC) if the party gives the Vice Presidential ticket to anyone outside the zone.

The statement reads: “OYC insists that the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) led by Prince Uche Secondus is planning to deny Igbos the Vice Presidential slot when the party holds her Presidential Primaries early October 2018 in Port Harcourt Rivers state”.

Read Also: Ohaneze: Nigeria may not survive without restructuring

“Prince Uche Secondus had tactically avoided addressing the issue of denying south East the position of Vice President after the upcoming Presidential Primaries, because of the fear of the cabal that insists that South West Vice Presidency is better than Southeast Vice President because of reasons best known to them”.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide will mobilize Igbo Youths to vote massively for PDP in Governorship and Senatorial elections in Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu states come 2019 but if PDP led by Prince Uche Secondus deny Igbo Vice Presidential slot, will vote massively for another party in 2019 Presidential election”.

“PDP should choose among the Vice President among the three serving Governors in South East, or choose former Governor Peter Obi who is a better Presidential material with steeling leadership qualities and excellent track records of Achievement as former Governor Anambra and Chairman of then South East Governors for 8 years, widely acceptable among Nigerians, we believe that the Serving South East Governors are more interested in going for their Second Tenures in their various States, so Mr Peter Obi remained the better option for PDP winning the 2019 Election”.

“This is our Final Warning to PDP regards to the 2019 Presidential election, any attempt to zone Vice President to another Zone after the Primaries, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide will mobilise Igbo Youths for APC where we have nothing to lose. PDP make hay now the Sun shines”.

Meanwhile, the group have thanked Ndigbo for defying the Sit at home order of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, on 14th September 2018

The group said the people by their actions have avoided another bloodshed by defying the order  to Sit at home.

“We observed across Igbo land that majority of Ndigbo because of economic hardship defy the order of Sit at home but rather joined the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide in the Prayer sessions in remembrance of those killed in September 14th 2017”.

“This is a Victory to all Igbos for avoiding another bloodshed by defying the order not to Sit at home, those who had plotted to use the opportunity to massacre innocent unarmed Biafrans, had waited in vain as Ndigbo is wiser not to Fall victims of our oppressors”.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council will continue to protect Ndigbo in every situation, and thank the people for their co-operation in ensuring that Igbo land was peaceful during the September 14th Sit at home.

  • Pro-Biafra group plot anti-Ohanaeze protest

    … As Onwuka remains incommunicado

Members of the Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) Friday declared that they were running out of patience over the whereabouts of their leader, Benjamin Onwuka.

Onwuka has remained incommunicado 11 days after he was reportedly arrested by security operatives after a 3rd failed attempt to enter the Enugu Government House.

In a statement by the group’s Deputy Leader, Mazi Ambrose Ugwu, he said the youths wing of the BZF were mobilizing for a massive protest against the South-East Governors and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Ugwu, who said the leadership of the BZF has been calming the youths down for nearly two weeks, said “as it stands now, there is very little we can do any longer.

“Our youths have run out of patience in their demand to see Onwuka, either dead or alive. No law allows for the detention of any Nigerian for more than 24 hours without being charged to court, more so when the person is being denied access to food and his relations.

“For the umpteenth time, we want to make it loud and clear, our leader, Barr. Benjamin Onwuka is being held under the instruction of the South-East Governors and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Nnia Nwodo.

“Our youths are mobilizing for a massive protest and it will lead to a total shutdown of whatever is called Ohanaeze Ndigbo. We, the elders of the Zionsits have been holding them back, with the believe that those concerned will do the needful, but we can’t hold them forever.

“The earlier Nnia Nwodo and his cohorts, the South-East governors release Onwuka’s corpse for us, the better for them. Our demand is simple: ‘we want to see our leader, dead or alive’.

“Nwodo and his Ohanaeze are merely interested in propagating the interest of his choice northern presidential candidate than the Igbo he claims to lead. And will soon come for him to pay for betraying the people and for sabotaging the Biafa struggle.

“For now, we demand immediate disbandment of the Nwodo’s leadership of Ohanaeze. We have seized to recognize him as such and urge all lovers of Igbo course to do same.”

  • Ndigbo conquer division monster

Two feuding prominent groups in the Southeast, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a rallying organisation for the region, and the secessionist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have put their differences behind them. CHRIS OJI reports

Of all the challenges facing the Southeast, some reckon division is the worst. They say the cacophony of voices has robbed the region of its place in the federal equation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Igbo’s apex socio-cultural organisation, and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a secessionist group, exemplify this disunity. But right from the day of its inauguration, the present executive of Ohanaeze led by Chief Nnia Nwodo did not disown the Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB.

Nwodo made it clear on that day while fielding questions from reporters that the IPOB members “are our children, we cannot abandon them to their fate.” Then Nnamdi Kanu was still incarcerated.

But the IPOB did not see anything good in the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization. Even if Ohanaeze sang praises of the IPOB to high heavens, the later would still respond with hostile statements.

The main issue of disagreement between the two centred on which way forward for Ndigbo. While the Ohanaeze preferred restructuring as the soothing balm for Ndigbo, the IPOB insisted on outright declaration of Biafra through referendum.

Each time Ohanaeze spoke of restructuring, the IPOB would let fly another blow to its favourite punching bag. The IPOB went to the extent of threatening to unleash mayhem at the recently concluded Summit on Restructuring held at Awka by Ohanaeze. But the threat turned out to be empty as the summit was a success.

While Ohanaeze also preferred the Biafra issue to be pursued diplomatically and politically by agitators, the IPOB would not take such “rubbish”. They rather prefer ceaseless protests. Ohanaeze, the IPOB continued to see it, as a good for nothing pan Igbo organisation.

The cat and mouse relationship between the two has ended.

Eminent lawyer and iconic member of Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), Professor Ben Nwabueze said no. Enough of the hostility. ýNwabueze brokered a meeting between the two. The meeting was held in Enugu behind closed door.

Ohanaeze was led by its President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo while IPOB was led by its deputy leader, Uche Mefor. Some other notable Igbo leaders were present at the meeting. The meeting was actually a huge success as IPOB agreed in the meeting to ceasefire on its attack on Ohanaeze.

It was also gathered that the Igbo leaders were able to talk sense into the IPOB leadership for them to change their method of agitation and embrace diplomacy.

Although the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership was reluctant to issue a statement on the outcome of the meeting, saying it is family affair that does not need to be made public, the IPOB through its deputy leader, Mefor issued a statement that effect.

The group has to stop all forms of verbal attacks, name calling and other forms of abuse against the leadership of Ohonaeze Ndigbo, forthwith.

The statement says: “Following an important meeting with some respectable Igbo elders, the representatives of IPOB and leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo earlier today July 6, 2017 in Enugu, under the distinguished chairmanship of the very eminent Prof. Ben Nwabueze; IPOB High Command hereby mandate that all forms of verbal attacks and name calling on all media platforms against Ohaneze Ndigbo seize with immediate effect. No IPOB family member should disparage Ohaneze Ndigbo or its leadership until further notice.

“This is strictly to give room for a number of representations and demands made by IPOB, to those present at the meeting to be given due attention within the shortest possible time-frame, under an atmosphere devoid of rancour.

“The meeting stressed among other things the need for our people, who are presently under siege in parts of Enugu State, to recognise the urgency and need to synergise and constitute a common front against all forms of threats to our existence as a people.

“Should this gesture by IPOB, in the face of well documented betrayal and blackmail by the political class be taken for granted, IPOB shall have no option but to stand in the gap to defend the aspirations and collective will of the people of Biafra against every enemy.

“IPOB, as the most potent and largest freedom fighting outfit on earth, remains focused, determined and resolute. Our unalloyed commitment to a referendum in pursuit of our emancipation remain sacrosanct and insurmountable.”

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo confirmed the development through his Media Adviser, Emeka Attamah. “Yes it is true. We have reconciled,” he said.

  • Ohanaeze urges Ndigbo to ignore IPOB’s tantrums

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged those misguided by the tantrums of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members and other destabilizing agents to rethink and ignore the fake propaganda of its detractors and embrace the new dawn in Igboland.

A release issued by the media adviser to the president general, Chief Emeka Atamah regarding the just concluded summit on restructuring held in Awka solicited for unity among the Igbo.

Ohanaeze reminded the people that this was not the first time the empty threats by the misguided elements fell through as its threat to disrupt the Anambra State elections last year came to nought as the election went on with a huge and unprecedented success for Governor Willie Obiano with its unprecedented turnout.

It said that the success of the Igbo Summit was resounding and was reverberating in the country and other parts of the world, adding that the only observed noise was by some obviously rented women at the venue who, in any case were ignored by both the audience and security operatives as their noise amounted to nothing.

The release further said that in any democracy, the majority will always have its way with whimpers from the minority as will always be the case in a matter where Ohanaeze Ndigbo has the unalloyed and overwhelming support of the generality of Ndigbo and urged the few dissenting voices to join the band wagon.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated its unmitigated resolve to pursue the restructuring fight and other fights that will advance the interest and livelihood of Ndigbo to logical end.

The body observed that it was important that members of Pro-Biafra groups understand that Ohanaeze Ndigbo was not working at cross purposes with them but striving for the same end they were fighting for which is self-determination for Ndigbo in a country where they are respected and allowed to develop at their own pace without hindrance.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo once more, extended its hand of friendship to IPOB and called on dialogue as the path they were following would only lead to further spilling of Igbo blood for a cause that can be peacefully fought and realised,  enough blood of our children have been shed in pursuit of the cause,” the organization stressed.

It expressed its gratitude to the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, for hosting the recently concluded Igbo Summit on Restructuring the country.

The body attributed the success of the Summit to the high priority Governor Obiano accorded to it.

The release thanked the Deputy Senate President, Prof. Ike Ekweremadu and members of the National Assembly who attended the Summit with him for their marked presence and resolve to pursue vigorously the issue of restructuring with their colleagues at the National Assembly.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo commended the unequalled enthusiasm and commitment of the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led Local Organizing Committee that made the unanimity of Igbo resolve on restructuring manifest through their highly researched and intellectual input and output.

The apex Igbo body expressed its deference to the chairman of the occasion, its illustrious son, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and a host of distinguished Igbo sons and daughters for the big presence and endorsement of the historical stand of Ndigbo.

It further expressed its gratitude to Speakers of the State House of Assembly, Chairmen of State and Local Chapters of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and distinguished traditional rulers whose state chairmen gave their royal assent to the Igbo Position on restructuring which made it a working document for the restructuring of the nation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo thanked most especially the delegates from the South West, South South and Middle Belt for their solidarity and felt presence through their goodwill messages at the Summit and assured them that Ndigbo would never relent in the struggle until victory for fairness and equity was realised in Nigeria.

  • We are not against Buhari’s re-election bid – Ohanaeze

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, said on Friday it is not against President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to seek re-election in 2019.

The group said the President has the constitutional right to seek re-election.

The media aide to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emeka Attamah, said although “the Ohanaeze Ndigbo does not comment on purely political issues, but in this regard the organization is not against President Buhari because he has the constitutional right to seek a second term in office.”

According to him, the President has his score and it is left for Nigerians to judge him from his scorecard.

“If they find him worthy through his scorecard, they can vote for him and re-elect ‎him or vice versa,” he said.

  • Biafra can’t be achieved through unruly behavior – Ohanaeze

The Igbo socio-cultural organisations, Ohanaeze Ndigbo warned Biafra agitators on Thursday that their dream would not be achieved by fighting, noise making, name calling and insults.

The President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo, stated this at a lecture organised by the Student Affairs Department of the University of Nigeria (UNN), College of Medicine, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu.

According to him, Biafra can be actualized through “political diplomacy.”

Nwodo said: “We cannot get Biafra by fighting and insulting people.  We cannot get restructuring by shouting. We can get it through political diplomacy.  I must tell you the truth.”

The Ohanaeze chief, who recently accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of plotting to disenfranchise Ndigbo from participating actively in the 2019 general elections by stopping them from participating in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), urged the Igbos to obtain their voters card and be part of the electoral process.
