Ohanaeze chief defends Fed Govt’s decision to relocate CBN to Lagos

An elder statesman and chieftain of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide,  Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, has defended the Federal Government’s decision to relocate some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Lagos.

He said the action is aimed at reducing time and expenditure.

Uwazuruike,  a lawyer, said the action would streamline processes,  improve efficiency and have a significant impact on the banking sector.

According to him, the administrative action of relocating CBN departments to a more convenient location is a step in the right direction.

Uwazuruike stressed that “this move is intended to reduce time and expenditure in the performance of a statutory duty, rather than being relocation to Lagos, as some have argued.”

“The relocation is expected to streamline processes, improve efficiency and have a significant impact on the banking sector in Nigeria,” he said.

He cited the CBN governor’s periodic meetings with bank chief executives as a key reason for the relocation.

“The new location in Lagos will allow for more convenient access, enabling 10 CBN executives to efficiently meet with over 200 banks.”

He said the relocation is intended to facilitate CBN’s operations and enhance its oversight capabilities, particularly in relation to the banking sector.

”Additionally, the relocation will facilitate CBN supervisors’ ability to conduct unannounced visits to banks, enhancing their oversight capabilities,” he said.

He stressed that the decision should not be overly politicised and should be seen as a step towards improving operational effectiveness, rather than a purely political move.

“Everything is not politics. For instance, the international oil companies should move their main offices or head offices to the Niger Delta.

“The decision making process is easier when the top people are conversant with the situation on ground. So, the unfolding opposition should be moderated, instead of overheating the polity.”

Community projects critical to southeast devt – Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has applauded ongoing massive community development projects across southeast, saying such self-help initiatives were crucial for development in the zone.

It described various individual projects as proof that Ndigbo were listening to calls by the apex Igbo socio-cultural group and the southeast governors to take their destiny in their hands towards ensuring development of Alaigbo.

Speaking in a chat with newsmen in Awka, the acting national Youth Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu noted that Ndigbo, by the gesture, were returning to the age-long tested and proven method they were known for.

He commended individuals and groups for committing their wealth in pursuance of the good of their homeland, stressing that government alone could not do everything for the populace.

He said: “Ndigbo as genuine lovers of humanity and peace, had from time, been responsible for creating liveable society they yearn for in the Southeast, despite decades of obvious abandonment by successive governments.

“What we saw as Ohaneze youths during the Yuletide celebrations were quite commendable and unprecedented, our people were showing true commitment to the cause of their communities.

“It is heartwarming to note that this call which the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbounder Chief Engr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Southeast governors have been making for quite a while now, is being heeded.

“These young men and women who are undertaking these projects are showing that they are truly Ndigbo by towing the line of the late Michael Okpara, who sacrificed a lot for the development and socio-economic growth of Igboland.”

Acknowledging the place of the projects in solving teething challenges of unemployment and youth restiveness in the region, Okpalaezeukwu said the initiative would further reduce youths intending to venture into criminality through gainful engagements.

He said: “This is what we have been preaching, the use of non-kinetic approaches to address the rising insecurity and youth restiveness in Alaigbo.

“A youth who is gainfully engaged will have little or no time to consider crimes. The educational scholarships will ensure that out-of-school children who ordinarily, would have been willing instruments in the hands of crime sponsors, will now make better use of their time, acquiring knowledge that will shape their future. We can go on and on.”

The youth leader however called on youths in various communities where developmental projects were executed to protect the infrastructure and other facilities in their respective locations.

“No reasonable people will use their own hands to tear down what they have built. Alaigbo is built with the sweat and blood of Ndigbo.

“As youths, we owe the obligation to guard these massive investments in our localities. Leaving them vulnerable to attacks, means we will no longer have them for our use in the near future.

“I therefore call on all Igbo youths to protect all government and privately-owned projects in their communities for the overall use and wellbeing of our people,” he added.

Ohanaeze mourns Akeredolu, describes late gov as inter-ethnic genius

Apex Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has described late governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu as a courageous man who spoke truth to power.

The Igbo group also described him as a great in-law, inter-ethnic genius, soldier of democracy and the popular sentiment of the southwest politics.

In a statement issued in Enugu on Saturday, December 30, through its national publicity secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze said it received with grief the sad news of the passing of “an Angel of history; a robust visionary, purveyor of morals, the jinx breaker, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, a legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, an inter-ethnic genius, the two time governor of Ondo State and the former chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu.”

It said the former governor was not only an exceptional in-law of the Igbo; he was also their noble son by the reason of marriage to their adorable daughter, Her Excellency, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu.

It said: “It is noteworthy that the Ohanaeze Constitution confers Igbo citizenship on our inlaws and their offspring.

“As long as the marriage with Betty lasted, Akeredolu displayed an unflinching fidelity, marital exemplariness and a profound commitment to the welfare of the Emeabiam community, Owerri-West, in Imo State.

“Such magnanimous relationship was extended to the Igbo community in Ondo State”, the statement read.

It added that the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, could not withhold his emotions on hearing the sad news of the demise of “one of our best”.

The Igbo leader recalled the audacious roles that Rotimi Akeredolu played in the creation of the Western Nigeria Security Network, otherwise called the Amotekun: the zest and steadfastness with which, as the Chairman of the South West governors forum, coordinated the zoning of the presidency to the southern part of Nigeria.

Chief Iwuanyanwu cited with freshness how Akeredolu chaired the meeting of the Southern Governors’ Forum at Enugu which emphatically re-echoed the earlier Asaba Declaration for Southern Presidency.

He said that Akeredolu demonstrated an extraordinary acumen in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

The Igbo leader qualified Akeredolu as a courageous man who spoke truth to power; a soldier of democracy and the popular sentiment of the South West politics.

He said: “Throughout his career, Akeredolu displayed an amazing social skill, dispositional humility, character comeliness, legal wizardry, irresistible charisma, intellectual prowess and a disarming political acumen.

“Although, Rotimi did not live long enough, but Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) had asserted that it is not the length of life  but the depth of life that matters. In other words, the Rotimi Akeredolu trajectory is a distinctive tribute to audacity, selfless service, humility, group loyalty, awesome generosity, resilience,  perseverance and Levite spirituality. He has by his granite convictions, left indelible marks in the sands of time”, it added.

Ohanaeze therefore urged “our amiable daughter, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu and the immediate family to accept with serenity and fortitude the inevitable reality for all mortals; and that they should take solace in the enviable track records of our son while he navigated his paths like a colossus”.

The Igbo Leader further requested all the Igbo structures in the South West of Nigeria to show adequate solidarity to the good people of Ondo State as they bid a befitting farewell to their son in-law.

    Lagos, Abuja demolitions: Ohanaeze kicks

    • We follow rule of law, says govt

Lagos State has defended the ongoing demolition of buildings in unauthorized places in parts of the state, saying the action is in accordance with the rule of law.

The reaction followed the call by Ohanaeze Ndigbo on the state to suspend the demolition of houses following complaints it received.

Its President Chief Emmanuel Iwuayanwu, who also complained about demolition in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said he would soon meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the matter.

Also yesterday, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi decried “demolitions across the country” in a tweet on his X handle.

But Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said since the demolitions started, no one had come up to say his property was demolished unjustly.

He said: “If we say we want a greater Lagos, a Lagos that will be home for all, that will develop at the pace of other megacities of the world, then rule of law should be sustained. The government is only demolishing buildings that are on canals and drainage channels. Let’s not forget that Lagos is below the sea level, and if we continue to abuse planning laws and regulations, we will all be affected when nature fights back.

“The demolition has no colour, no religion, no professional, gender or ethnic bias to it. It’s based purely on the rule of law that people must get permits before they start any building project, whether residential or business. I am also sure no one will get a permit to build on water or drainage channels.

“And since the demolition started, no one has come forward to say his property was demolished without due process. I know a local government chairman whose five houses have been demolished. So if anyone is saying it’s targeted at a section of residents, such person has not seen the full list of persons affected or has not done his homework right. The demolition has no ethnic coloration or bias.”

Iwuanyanwu during a news conference, said: “It has been brought to my notice that many families have been thrown into serious difficulty due to the demolition in Lagos State.

“I have carried out an investigation on what has happened in Lagos, and I appeal to the Government of Lagos State to intervene and ensure that justice is done. If anybody fails to obey the laws of the Land, the Igbo leadership will never support misconduct from any Igboman anywhere they live. I don’t have any doubt that there may be some instances where Igbo and perhaps other people whose property were demolished in Lagos did not fully comply with the laws of Lagos State. If any developer with impunity and without proper approval proceeds to develop a property anywhere in the world, he is taking a risk and his property stands the risk of being demolished.

“On the other hand, if the property is properly purchased, with approvals from appropriate authority given before development, the individual deserves a happy and peaceful enjoyment of his assets. If any Government demolishes the property built with approval of the appropriate government department, such government by law must pay appropriate compensation for the damage incurred to the owner of the building.

“I will make an attempt to see the Governor of Lagos State in the next few days. I will therefore appeal that the Governor of Lagos State kindly suspends the demolition of buildings until all the facts are cleared.

“I have also got reports of violation of building regulations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Because of the investment characteristics of Igbo, private properties and investments in Abuja are substantially owned by Igbos.

“I will advise my people the Igbo to ensure that they comply with all legislations and local regulations to avoid demolition of their properties in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.

He said Ohanaeze Ndigbo will establish an Ohanaeze Relief Agency to be controlled by top Igbo leaders with a mandate to  support other Nigerians when the need arises in the spirit of brotherhood.

    Obi decries demolitions

Obi in a tweet on his verified X handle @PeterObi, said:

“It’s with complete despondency and unhappiness that I have followed the ongoing demolitions of properties across the country, especially knowing the extra hardship such acts have been heaping on hapless citizens who are already battling with multi-dimensional Poverty.

“What a responsive government should be doing under the current harsh economic conditions in the country is to come up with measures aimed at alleviating the people’s hardships and to carry out measures that will take more people out of poverty.

“Even if there are some violations as the governments are claiming, this critical time is not auspicious for such an exercise knowing the hardship in the land and the consequences it will have on the poor who are struggling to make ends meet with their little resources.

“The poor in our midst who are putting their meagre resources are going through very severe financial stress that should not be multiplied further. In some cases, the properties being demolished are the lifetime savings and retirement abodes of the aged and incapacitated.

“My appeal therefore is for the respective governments involved in this act to consider the hardship in the country and try and put a human face to their actions. While we should enforce sensible regulations, all actions of government must show compassion.”

Ohanaeze seeks posthumoushonours for Nwabueze, Ebigwei

Apex Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has appealed to the Federal Government to consider giving posthumous honours to the late constitutional lawyer and elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, as well as foremost dentist, Dr. Sylvanus Ebigwei.

The Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Amb. Okey Emuchay, made the appeal at the group’s national secretariat in Enugu, where he opened condolence registers for the two eminent Igbo sons, who died recently.

Nwabueze died after an illness on October 29, 2023 at 94, while Ebigwei, a former vice president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for Delta State, died at 80 on November 3, 2023.

Emuchay, said both men served Ndigbo and Nigeria meritoriously in professional, political and social capacities and deserved honours.

He said Ohanaeze would during next year’s Igbo Day celebrations slated for Owerri, Imo State, give the duo awards in the Igbo Hall of Fame.

He described the opening of condolence registers as one of those very solemn occasions Ohanaeze had had in the last few months.

“As you are aware, we lost the deputy president general of Ohanaeze; we lost the president general of Ohanaeze, Prof. Obiozor and we lost Dara Mbazulike Amaechi. We also lost a former president general of Ohanaeze, Prof Joe Irukwu.

“In the last few weeks, we lost a former vice president general (Delta), Dr. Sylvanus Ebigwei and the longest serving secretary general of Ohanaeze and former minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Ben Nwabueze. These were former members of the National Executive Council (NEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and eminent Igbo sons. They played very critical roles in what we have today as Ohanaeze.

“So, it’s incumbent on us that are currently in the NEC of Ohanaeze to open and sign the two condolence books today in their honour.

“The families have not decided on the dates of their funerals, but Ohanaeze will remain in touch with their families and once those dates are announced, Ohanaeze will make them public.

“But we think it is important at this time to have the condolence books signed and opened so that the public will take the opportunity to sign the two condolence books.

“At the Igbo Day, September 29, next year, these two great sons of Igbo nation will also be honoured by Ohanaeze. And our prayer is that the Federal Government in its wisdom, at some point, will find it important to give them proper recognition, posthumously, because of the roles they played in nation building,” Emuchay said.

They described the process that gave him victory in the Saturday, November 11 governorship election as peaceful and credible.

Led by the president-general, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, and the Secretary-General, Amb. Okey Emuchey, on a congratulatory visit to the Government House Owerri on Wednesday, the group said Governor Uzodimma’s victory means a lot to them because he is an illustrious son of Ndigbo.

Speaking during the visit, Chief Iwuanyanwu also congratulated those who contested the governorship election with the governor.

Uzodimma urged them to join the governor in his quest to provide focused leadership in Imo state.

He, however, appealed to Governor Uzodimma to bring on board those who contested with him but were willing to be carried along.

Iwuanyanwu said that they are impressed with him, noting that, “Governor Uzodimma is an illustrious son, a warrior, a hero, and defender of Igboland who has stood behind Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”

He described the election as “free, fair and credible,” saying they are proud of the Governor and those who worked with him to ensure that he was victorious during the election.

He said despite speculations by detractors about insecurity and Imo State possibly going to be a battlefield, the exercise turned out to be “the most peaceful election ever witnessed in Imo State over the years.”

Chief Iwuanyanwu ascribed the situation to prayers by the Imo people who craved peace.

He said that the Governor made history by beating his opponents in all 27 local government areas, saying that the feat is a lesson for students of political science to research.

He noted: “I congratulate those who contested with Hope. It is not easy. I hope the Governor should see how to accommodate those who ran with him if they are willing to be carried along.”

In his response, Governor Uzodimma expressed delight at the visit and described it as a “symbol of Igbo unity and commitment to the good of Ndigbo.”

He said he is encouraged by the encomia poured on him and credited everything to the grace of God Almighty.

Governor Uzodimma who said the victory is Imo’s, noted that it is a source of confidence reposed on him to serve Imo people, Ndigbo, and southeast better, assuring that he will not disappoint their expectations.

Bichi best choice for Appropriation In 10th NASS – Ohanaeze, Arewa Youths

The Ohanaeze and Arewa Youths have said member representing Bichi Federal Constituency of Kano State, Abubakar Kabir Bichi is the best choice for chairmanship of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee.

They said this is owing to his pedigree in public service, legislative prowess and excellent antecedent of Committee leadership as well as steps taken so far.

The Groups in statement jointly signed by its executive leaders Nwabueze Obi and Kabiru Yusuf said Bichi’s dexterity was recently exhibited in the speedy but diligent work on the supplementary budget passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

According to them: “Bichi is the best man to Chair the Appropriations committee. He came on board with a rich resume of legislative progressiveness and knack for excellence as well as the advancement of the country.

“As Chairman of the Committee on Works in the 9th Assembly, Bichi provided both legislative support and oversight to critical road projects across the country in engagement with contractors and the Ministry of Works and Housing.

“He led the committee to oversee projects such as the Lagos-Badagry Road, Abuja-Kano Road, Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road and so on. The 9th House championed the return to January to December Budget cycle, hence there was timely passage of budget.

“With Bichi as Chairman of the Appropriation Committee in the 10th Assembly the tempo will and is already being sustained as evident in the Supplementary Budget. He will also reform the budget Committee and bring appropriation process to be at par with developed countries.”

The Ohanaeze and Arewa Youths said Bichi is already bringing reforms and innovation to the Appropriation Committee, taking its activities which were hitherto somehow opaque to the public glare.

“Since his assumption as Chairman of the Appropriation Committee, theirs meetings and activities are now always open for media coverage and observation by the citizens.

“Also, in recent times, it is under Bichi that supplementary budget is been defended openly, making observers and journalists to ask whether defences are held for supplementary budget.

“Bichi equally does not left anyone in doubt his preparedness to work with his team to ensure timely passage of budget and oversight over relevant government agencies to monitor effective and implementation of the Appropriation Act,” the groups added.
