  • Ojudu, Okechukwu, Fasua knock ex-president

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo was under fire yesterday for the content of his latest letter in which he alleged plots by President Muhammadu Buhari to manipulate the forthcoming elections.

The former leader was accused of trying to plunge the country into avoidable crises with his unsubstantiated allegations and claims.

Those who hit the former president are: Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Voice of Nigeria (VON) Director-General Osita Okechukwu and Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) presidential candidate,  Tope Fasua.

Ojudu said: “It is a rash of lies from a man who is frustrated. He and his candidate know defeat is coming and they are trying to prepare the mind of Nigerians for their destabilising plot.

“Please inform them this will not work. He should just reconcile his mind to the fact that he cannot win always. He has lost this particular battle.”

Okechukwu, who expressed disappointment over Obasanjo’s attack on the President, said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot rig election as insinuated by Obasanjo for Buhari because of the card reader.

The VON boss told this newspaper last night through a telephone chat that Obasanjo “is furious over his failed third-term bid and his plan to organise a movement against Buhari’s re-election bid.”

He said: “Obasanjo supervised over Prof Maurice Iwu’s election that has remained the worst in the history of the country. Even the beneficiaries of that electoral process late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had to say that the election that brought him to office was a fraud.

“So, when such statement goes out to the public we take it as one of the greatest errors of Obasanjo. He also told us that he was going to organise a movement and apparently what he is telling us is that he has failed in advancing that movement. He also told us that if he supports Atiku, God will punish him.

“He also failed on that. And this is a man that fought for third-term. I am happy today that President Muhammadu Buhari is not talking of third-term but a continual second term.

“I do not see where INEC comes in and to be honest with you, the card reader with this biometric component has closed the old methods of rigging; that is why people are now talking of vote-buying.

“It happens in Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun states. In all of those states, did we hear of ballot snatching or writing of results? So, which means that the card reader technology has closed those loopholes of the old that Obasanjo is referring to.

“I do not see how INEC can rig elections for anybody in today’s Nigeria. So, we can understand where he is coming from. We can say that his plots have failed.

“When he said he will raise a movement, he has forgotten that it cannot be raised without logistics. So, he should blame himself and not INEC. Obasanjo should blame himself for poor planning.”

Fasua said the former leader has a record of writing “such scary missives against his big enemies.”

The ANRP presidential candidate said: “The same Obasanjo wrote to Jonathan and alleged that the latter was training killer squads. He also wrote to Yar’Adua towards the tail end of the past leader’s life at a point when he should have been praying for that leader.

“He has been instrumental to the emergence of three leaders after his departure and all three have been terrible according to his own statements. Now he wants to patch in a fourth one and so the letters have again appeared towards the beginning of elections.”

  • Buhari did not ask CJN to resign, says Ojudu

The Special Adviser to the President on Politics, Senator  Babafemi Ojudu, said last night that President Muhammadu Buhari did not ask  the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to resign.

Ojudu made the clarification in a comment posted on CACOL WhatsApp group.

It was the first reaction by a government official to the controversy generated by the filing of charges against Justice Onnoghen.

He said: “Buhari never at any time demanded CJ’s resignation. I challenge anyone who says so to cite the pronouncement, the press statement or quote any public official who made such announcement.”

The Nation also learnt last night that the Presidency was not in support of the planned trial of Justice Onnoghen  for alleged failure to declare his assets.

Buhari, according to well-placed Presidency sources, was shocked about the development.

Sources said the planned trial may have been hatched by 5th columnists in the corridors of power to embarrass the Presidency and create misunderstanding between the judiciary and the FG.

Speaking on conditions of anonymity last night official government sources explained that the only impact such an action would generate at this time is distasteful.

“Let me tell you point blank Mr. President is not aware and was shocked at the development. It is not going to fly,” a top government official said.

Another official said: “whatever may be the merits of the case being put against the CJN, it is not advisable at this time. So it is not about the rightness of the planned action.”

Asked whether the trial would go ahead, the source said: “what is certain right now is that this came as a shock to the Presidency and does not enjoy approval of any kind. You can figure out the rest.”

When contacted last night over the matter, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said that he had not been briefed on the matter.

“I have not been briefed on it,” was all he said.

  • Ojudu: Delegates should vote wisely

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Senator Babafemi Ojudu is a governorship aspirants in Ekiti State. The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain spoke with ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on the primary holding on Saturday and the party’s preparations for the July 14 poll.

You recently concluded a tour of the 177 wards and 16 council areas to meet the delegate. How was it like?

It was quite interesting; that was the second one that I did since I embarked on this project. I went round and we were well received, the evidence of that can be seen in the videos we have posted in the social media. People were ecstatic, I delivered a message of hope to them, I let them know who I am, who I was and where I want to be. I also preached the message of unity, that we can only win this coming election if our party is united. I told them the story of what happened in 2007 when we had thirteen aspirants and one of them won and eleven others quit the party and joined up with the PDP and since then, we have not been able to win election clearly in Ekiti State. I told them that if we fail to unite this time around, it will be very bad for us; I asked them to eschew bitterness, rancor, not to damage anybody’s image. That we all still have to come back united at the end of this primary to win election in Ekiti State. The people warmed up to it and I also let them know that they need a man of courage, somebody who has a history of struggle, somebody who can give a bloody nose to Fayose and his baby. They were happy, they received us warmly and quite a good number of them has been calling ever since, that ‘I may not have campaigned for you in the past but hearing you talk, I am rest assured that you are the right person to fly the flag of our party.

What message do you have for delegates as the primary election beckons?

They should elect someone who can win, they should elect someone with good record, they should elect someone who majority of voters in Ekiti State will vote for. Less than five per cent of the population of this state, are members of our party, Therefore, for them to know who they should vote for, they should go round the state, talk to civil servants, talk to teachers, talk to pensioners, talk to local government workers, talk to market women, talk to farmers, talk to the youths. Ask them, they are all tired of Fayose but who will you put forward for us to win this election? They know, people know that if you ride okada here and strike a discussion with okada riders, they will tell you, if you go to the market, they will tell you, if you call on a pensioner or a teacher, they will tell you that we don’t want this person, we don’t want that person. I have asked them and they said they love our party if we pick the right candidate. Our delegates should ask these questions even if somebody gives them millions of Naira, they should take the money but they should ensure that they vote somebody who can win. In the primary in 2014, at the national level, people collected money from some aspirants and Buhari didn’t give anybody a dime and people still voted for him because they knew Buhari could win election for them. These are the kinds of things I want to tell them, that there are some of us who have been struggling and fighting for Ekiti State and taking a lot of risks on behalf of the people of Ekiti State. They know that I am that one, they should vote for me and I won’t disappoint them, I won’t steal their money, no enquiry set up to probe me in my entire life in public office, I have not stolen any money and I have not been indicted in any way. So, they can trust me.

What makes the Ojudu candidacy different from those of other aspirants, what makes you different from other aspirants?

Again, it has to do with my record in public service, my engagement with the military even when I was not yet an active politician, when I was a journalist. What makes me different is my person, my character; people know that I am a courageous person, I don’t run away from battles. I take up struggles on behalf of the people and secondly, my public record is very clean, sparkling. Nobody can say Ojudu has stolen his money, nobody can say Ojudu has done any deal with anybody in the past and in the present. Another factor is where I come from; Ado-Ekiti has registered voters of 180,000 plus, the next local government to it is Ikere with 65,000. In our party primary, we have thirty three persons contesting across the state. From that population of 180,000, I am the only one contesting from that local government, there is a reason for that. Ado people want their son to be governor this time around and they are backing him with their votes. Oye local government area where Dr. Kayode Fayemi comes from, there are five aspirants there and they are not just pushovers. A former senator is there, a former member of House of Reps is there, former chieftain of PDP who actually won the primary of PDP in 2007 and it was taken from him and given to Segun Oni, is also from there. In Segun Oni’s local government, there is (Muyiwa) Coker, in Emure with less than 40,000 voters, there are two aspirants from there. In Gbonyin, with not to large population of voters, there are two aspirants from there. Same goes for Efon, there are two aspirants from there. I am the only one where we have over 180,000 voters; if Ado supports you in any election, you have won, if Ado is against you in any election, you have lost. I don’t want us to lose this forthcoming election.

Therefore, there is a strong reason for our party members to look at the candidate from Ado, particularly a candidate who is very strong, who is not a pushover, who is brilliant, who is bold and balanced. If they do that, if I am elected and presented as their candidate from the 6th of May, it’s a walkover, it’s a forgone conclusion. Ikere, where Fayose went to pick the candidate for PDP, has 65,000 votes, Ado has 180,000 votes. From that Ikere, there are five aspirants from our party, so all of these are going to come into play. I am having a head start already from these factors I have just told you.  I, also can be trusted; I am not arrogant, I am not haughty, I relate freely with people, I move around with them, I eat with them and I am very sincere. Those are the qualities.

What is your message to voters as the July 14 governorship election draws nearer?

My message is that, let us vote to win; don’t let us vote because of money. Yes, people will bring money, take that money, in some cases, it is their money. So, take that money, it is the money they supposed to have used in the past to take care of them; take that money and vote according to your conscience. If you love our party, don’t vote for anybody because he is boasting that he will give delegates N1 million or N2 million because we will later ask them where they got that money from. That is for a later day but take the money first and then do what is going to give glory to our party, APC, what is going to make us win. Do what is going to give you hope; we don’t want to stay outside government again for another four years, we don’t want any remnant of Fayose again in this state after this election. Then, let them know that I have stood by this state over a long period of time, I have taken risks, I have used my resources, I have had some kind of engagement with everyone who is on the field in this state. This man (Fayose) is ruining Ado-Ekiti, he has demolished several homes and rendered thousands of people homeless. He has abused our traditional ruler, so, they are angry and they are poised to punish him by voting for their own son to become governor who will then redesign this state and make this state a good place to live in.

  • Ado should produce next governor, says Ojudu

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has insisted that it is time Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, is given the opportunity to produce governor.

Ojudu urged the party delegates to consider the fact that Ado-Ekiti has the highest concentration of voters in the state with the indigenes ready to vote their son at the July governorship election.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters said he is fit for the job on the strength of his clean public service record, advocacy for good governance and human rights, good name, integrity and closeness to the people in the grassroots.

The journalist-turned politician, who urged delegates to entrust him with their votes, spoke with our reporter on Monday in his Ado-Ekiti country home ahead of this Saturday’s APC governorship primary election.

Ojudu, who represented Ekiti Central as a Senator in the National Assembly between 2011 and 2015 said his kinsmen don’t want Governor Ayo Fayose and his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, over alleged disrespect to the throne of the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti and demolition of houses which he alleged did not follow due process.

He said: “Ado-Ekiti has registered voters of 180,000 plus, the next local government to it is Ikere with 65,000. In our party primary, we have 33 persons contesting across the state.

  • Ojudu: Ekiti APC won’t rely on federal might

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not rely on the federal might to win the July 14 governorship poll in Ekiti State.

Ojudu, who is seeking the APC ticket to stand as a candidate, absolved President Muhammadu Buhari of alleged involvement in a plot to rig the election.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti to mark the end of his tour of the 177 wards to sell his agenda to party delegates ahead of the May 5 primary, Ojudu said the APC will win the election because of the bad governance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ojudu, who represented Ekiti Central in the Senate between 2011 and 2015, described himself as the best among politicians seeking the nomination of the APC.

Describing himself as the right candidate to confront the PDP at the poll, Ojudu urged delegates to vote him as the flag bearer.

Dispelling allegations of Buhari’s interference, Ojudu described the president as a thoroughbred democrat who will not subvert the people’s wish.

“President Buhari didn’t rig election in Kogi, Anambra, Edo and Ondo States and we must not expect such in Ekiti. We are going to win through people’s might.

“All we need to do is to tell Ekiti people what we are going to do better than this profligate PDP government in Ekiti. I have a manifesto that I have sold to the delegates.

“We have a huge debt in Ekiti today because there are misplaced priorities and we saw people taking bonds and loans and misappropriated it.

“I am not against borrowing, but it must be spent on human capital development and those projects that can generate money for our state.

“Today, our people are oppressed, experiencing corruption and hunger. So, there is nothing left for Fayose’s government to support continuity”.

He criticised Governor Ayo Fayose for allegedly spending N16 billion to construct a flyover which he said “has no benefit when workers have not been paid for eight months.”

The aspirant has good news for workers and pensioners. He said: “I want to assure our workers that I will pay all outstanding salaries and pension. These I can easily do by way of stopping white elephant project and concentrate on human capital development.”

Ojudu promised to invest in agriculture to generate employment and additional revenue into the state coffers, noting that Ekiti has comparative advantage in the sector.

Ojudu pledged to establish farm settlements in the 16 local government areas to take the unemployed youths from the streets.

He said: “When an economy is like this, Ekiti must go back to land. We must go into commercial agriculture and encourage our youth, so that we can feed ourselves, sell to neighbouring states and even earn exports to shore up our IGR.”

  • It’s insulting to say I’m Buhari’s candidate, says Ojudu

•President’s Special Adviser obtains nomination form

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has dismissed speculations that he was being sponsored for governor by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ojudu, an aspirant in All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ekiti State governorship election, said it was an insult to insinuate that he was being sponsored by the President.

He addressed reporters yesterday in Abuja after picking nomination and expression of interest form at APC national secretariat.

The aspirant accused Governor Ayo Fayose of allegedly wasting about N28.08 million of the state’s resources weekly to hire private jets for trips to Abuja to insult and oppose President Buhari.

He said it was an insult to insinuate that he was being sponsored by Buhari.

Ojudu said: “I’m not the President’s candidate. I’m nobody’s candidate. President Buhari is a father to all of us. I have told you I have history in this country.

“I started fighting the military at the age of 27. I wrote my first ‘will’ at 29. I was locked up 15 times between 1993 and 1998. I am a man of myself. I fought Babangida, I fought Abacha, I fought Obasanjo, I campaigned for democracy, I campaigned for good governance, I campaigned for human rights and I suffered for it.

“I was in prison for nine months; I wore one cloth for nine months. The cloth is at a museum at the epicentre of Ekiti State. So, at my level, at 57, I am not a cripple, I am not a baby, I don’t need crutches, I’m not being sponsored by President Buhari. In fact, I am coming too late. I have enough knowledge and education to be President of this country. Therefore, it is an insult to say somebody is carrying me; I don’t need anybody to carry me.

“Buhari is our leader, he is our President and he is the leader of our party. If you know him very well, he’s a fair-minded person. If I decide today, if his wife is from Ekiti and she’s in this race with me, President Buhari will still be fair to all of us. That’s the man I know. So, perish that thought. If anybody comes to you to say, he is being backed or presented by the President that person is a bloody liar.”

He accused the present government in Ekiti State of wasting resources on frivolities.

  • Ojudu vows to recover assets ‘illegally’ acquired by Fayose

Ojudu vows to recover assets ‘illegally’ acquired by Fayose

Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, was yesterday on a lockdown  as the Special Adviser to the President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, formally declared interest to seek his party’s  governorship seat.

Ojudu, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), vowed to defeat Governor Ayo Fayose and his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, if he wins the ticket of the party.

The journalist-turned politician declared that the governor should prepare for hard times outside power as he (Fayose) would be made to face justice for alleged constitutional breaches and corruption.

Ojudu vowed that the APC administration would recover all assets, including choice houses, allegedly acquired by Fayose with Ekiti funds since his return to power in 2014.

The presidential aide held a three-in-one event which started with the inauguration of his campaign office on Textile Road before holding a massive rally at Okeyinmi Roundabout.

Popular Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, was on the band stand.

Ojudu later addressed the  massive crowd that had gathered to hear what he had for him.

The governorship hopeful was accompanied by his wife, Tola, officials of his campaign organization, friends, associates and other admirers.

They were received by the party executives led by the state Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye.

There was    traffic gridlock on Ado-Ikere Highway throughout the period of the ceremony.

Mrs. Olaleye promised that the party would conduct a transparent, credible, free and fair primary election among all its aspirants. She said the party is poised to regain power at the July 14 poll to give Ekiti people good governance and a better standard of living.

Speaking at the party secretariat, Ojudu urged APC leaders and members to unite and chase Fayose and his proxy out of power and save Ekiti State from total collapse.

  • Why Atiku defected from APC, by Ojudu

Why Atiku defected from APC, by Ojudu

Presidential Political Adviser Senator Babafemi Ojudu has reflected on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying that he left the ruling party because he could not realise his presidential ambition.

He chided the Waziri Adamawa for twisting facts and wiping up sentiments against the Buhari administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for partisan reasons.

Ojudu said Atiku’s departure was not surprising to the APC, stressing that it was typical of the former vice president to call it quits with a platform that cannot guarantee his bid for the highest office.

He recalled that Atiku has always destroyed the parties that hosted him by turning around to pull it down, following his inability to clinch the nomination ticket.

Ojudu spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise on the implications Atiku’s defection for himself, the PDP and the APC.

Describing Atiku as a serial defector, the political adviser said the gale of defections peculiar to the eminent politician underscored his desperation for power.

He said the Turaki Adamawa lied about his marginalisation in the APC, recalling that he often declined to make any constructive and useful contribution during the meetings of party’s founding fathers.

Ojudu said: “Atiku’s defection is not surprising . During the meeting of the G-19, the Legacy Group that formed the APC, Atiku was there. We laid our programmes as a government before the party leaders and asked for their contributions. He was the only person who refused to talk. The second time the meeting was called, Atiku did not attend. We knew that he will leave. Each time he wants to leave a house, he demolishes the house.

However, the presidential adviser said it will be myopic to dismiss Atiku as a politician without weight, judging by his status and antecedents in politics.

Ojudu also said that Atiku has the right to defect under the constitution to seek refuge in any party, despite his constrains and limitations.

He stressed: “It will be stupid to dismiss his weight. He is an asset to an extent that he stays there. His goal is to be the president. If he cannot get the ticket, he will leave.”

Ojudu acknowledged the complaint by kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai on the alleged marginalisation of party elders, which Atiku also cited as reason for leaving the APC, saying that the situation has been corrected.

He said: “There is no perfect organisation and there is no perfect government. The Kaduna governor expressed hos mkind and he has joined others to put things right. You don’t jump out.”

Ojudu said Atiku was fed up with the APC the moment he failed to get the presidential ticket atv the primary, adding that he is now playing his last card.

He added: “Atiku is playing his last card. He is desperate to be president. If President Buhari get a second term, he knows that the presidency will go to another region. The presidency will not go to another region. Before it goes back to the North, it may take years and he would have become old.”

Ojudu also dismissed Atiku’s allegation that the government has not done much for the youths, clarifying that efforts were being made to create jobs in many ways, including massive investment in agriculture.

He challenged the former vice president to list his contribution to job creation in his native Adamawa State.

Ojudu queried: “What were the contributions of Atiku to APC’s efforts to rebuild Nigeria? What has he done as a godfather in Adamawa to solve the problem of unemployment. What agenda for youths did he take to the president that was rejected?”

The political adviser gave the Buhari administration a pas mark, saying that it is a government of planning and anti-corruption.

He said: “There is planning and there is no siphoning of public funds.”
