Ojudu at 56: What his people want from him

Segun Dipe, journalist and political analyst, extols the virtues of the Presidential Special Adviser on Political Matters, Senators Babafemi Ojudu, who clocks 56 this month.

We all provide something unique to this world, and we can all smell when someone isn’t being real. The more you focus on genuine connections with people, and look for ways to help them, rather than just focus on what they can do for you, the more likable and personable you become. This isn’t required to be a great leader, but it is to be a respected leader, which can make all the difference in your business.” -Lewis Howes, New York Times bestselling author of The School of Greatness
As Babafemi Ojudu, born on March 27, clocks 56, it would be nerve-racking to imagine him in a partying mood, twerking to the rhythm of a live music while his dear state pines. Ojudu is a pro-democracy activist who had suffered so much pain to get his country liberated. To think he would, at this time, close his heart and eyes against his dear state is a misnomer.
Ojudu possesses so many qualities that he can put to use for the survival of his people. It is an understatement that they are currently in an emotional dungeon, receiving the Israelites treatment under a Pharaoh. And if it will not be too much of a demand, Ojudu is now being asked to come home and lead from the front in ensuring that his dear state returns to its path of glory. That should be his birthday gesture for his people.
The fact that Ojudu keeps a positive attitude always, and this keeps his energy level up, is a great plus. In the April 2011 election for the Ekiti Central Senatorial seat, Ojudu polled 67,747 running on the ACN platform. Labour Party (LP) candidate and former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose received 29,773 votes. Kayode Alufa of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 29,488 votes. After conceding defeat, Alufa congratulated Ojudu, saying: “Our God in his wisdom has chosen you with your experience and good credentials, which I am sure you will deploy for the service and improvement of our impoverished area.”
If indeed Ekiti is very dear to Ojudu’s heart, there are so many of such “experience and good credentials” he is bestowed with that he cannot afford to keep them away from his people at this crucial period. Even his sworn enemies have come to admit that he is unarguably bold, brilliant and balanced. Under the Zodiac sign of Aries, Ojudu is defined by enthusiasm, energy and passion. He takes to all matters of life with great energy and dedication. He strives to be the best in all he does, which is why he would always dedicate countless hours to overcoming a challenge that he deems to be worthwhile. In this respect, he is a natural leader who often attracts many admirers to himself.
Having a great idea, and assembling a team to bring that concept to life is the first step in creating a successful venture. Ojudu has this in a large dose. He is a chip off Anthony Lewis, American public intellectual and journalist, twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and a longtime New York Times columnist. Lewis, also born on same March 27, is credited with creating the field of legal journalism in the United States and had proffered that despite all the gains for democracy in the world, in many countries anyone who wants to publish truths unwelcome to the government risks suppression and criminal punishment.
Truly, Ojudu as a journalist had fallen into this trap. He was bent on publishing the truth and he got stewed for doing so on many occasions. Ojudu was arrested, tortured and detained several times. In July 1998, he almost got his life snuffed out of him, but for the death of the then dictator and maximum ruler, Gen Sani Abacha. It was reported that while still in cell, he suffered from typhoid fever and jaundice, both life-threatening, caused by the unsanitary conditions in which he was detained and denial of access to medication. Yet he remained undeterred.
Ojudu’s confidence level is electrifying. Even on days when things appeared worrisome and were not going according to plan,
Ojudu as a leader knew how to keep everyone working and moving ahead. He would maintain the team morale, keep up the confidence level, and assure everyone that setbacks are natural and the important thing is to focus on the larger goal. As the leader who stays calm and confident, he helps keep the team feeling the same.
March 27 children are generally born militant. They love people, fearless, a little crazy and are true individuals with their own inimitable style of dress and behavior, attracting attention wherever they go. They don’t just have star quality; they have something far more special: the likability factor.
Ojudu scores a high in creating a productive work environment, which stems from his open door policy or making it a point to talk assuredly to his people on a daily basis and making himself available to discuss issues. Those who work with him would always attest to the fact that they learn to trust and depend on him, and are always less hesitant to work harder.
Ojudu is not a man who can be drowned by the trivial. He is not only focused, he has a clear vision of where he would want his people to be in a near future. Five minutes of discussion would convince anyone that Ojudu can turn the fortune of Ekiti around for good in a short term if permitted.
Ojudu is 100 per cent authentically himself in relating to people, sometimes flawed, but always passionate about whatever he believes in. He is such a leader who would seamlessly instill confidence and followership by having a clear vision, showing empathy and being a strong coach. This has allowed him to engender trust and buy-in from his people.
So, what are those qualities Ojudu need to display to his people as he clocks 56? Though legion, the following must be prioritised: focus, confidence, integrity, transparency, inspiration, passion, innovation, patience, stoicism, wonkiness, authenticity, open-mindedness, decisiveness, personableness, empowerment, positivity, generosity, persistence, insightfulness, communication, accountability and restlessness.
Happy Birthday, Babafemi Ojudu, illustrious son of Ekiti. It’s time for rescue mission.

  • Ojudu: looters wishing Buhari dead

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters Babafemi Ojudu has said looters of the nation’s treasury are wishing President Muhammadu Buhari dead.

He said the President would soon be back from his medical vacation.

The presidential aide spoke with reporters at the weekend at a get-together for leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State.

He urged Ekiti APC members to be united and continue “aggressive” mobilisation  ahead of next year’s governorship poll.

Ojudu advised Governor Ayo Fayose to start packing and prepare himself for an APC takeover of power “very soon”.

•Senator: I’ll give evidence as Unity Forum member

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has said his role as a witness in the alleged forgery of the Senate rules in the election of its President and Deputy President, Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu, on June 9, last year, has nothing to do with his position as the President’s aide.

The senator said he was testifying because of his membership of the Seventh Senate and as one of the conveners of the Unity Forum, who called the police attention to the alleged forgery.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has charged Saraki and Ekweremadu with alleged forgery and conspiracy before an Abuja Federal High Court.

Also charged are: former Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa and Deputy Clerk of the House, Mr. Benard Efeturi.

Ojudu is one of the witnesses in the case.

He said: “My statement and other witnesses’ statements were taken months before my appointment. As a member of the Unity Forum, I am one of those who worked for Senator Ahmed Lawan as the preferred candidate for the Senate Presidency in the June 9, 2015 election.

“There are three groups of senators. They are: the Unity Forum, Like Minds and the Non-Aligned. The Unity Forum comprised serving and non-serving senators. I am an active member, being a senator in the Seventh Senate – from 2011 to 2015.”

Ojudu said he was at the Senate for four years, adding that at no time were the rules amended.

He said: “So, tampering with the rules by the current Senate was seen as a misnomer by us and that was why we petitioned the police.

“The statement we did to the police on the matter predated my appointment and that of Senator Ita Enang. It will, therefore, be preposterous for anyone to classify me as representing the Presidency on the matter.”

  • Politics under Buhari not do-or-die, says Ojudu

Politics under Buhari not do-or-die, says Ojudu

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters Senator Femi Ojudu has urged Nigerian to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari to reform the electoral process and make it more participatory.

He said the era of do-or-die politics was over because the President is determined to change Nigerians’ perception about politics and entrench a new political order devoid of desperation.

Ojudu spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, yesterday during a Transformation Leadership Seminar organised for youths.

The presidential aide accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of injecting brigandage into the nation’s polity since the advent of democracy.

He assured that the Buhari administration would redirect the psyche of Nigerians and make them see election as a civil matter, rather than a war.

Ojudu said: “Elections in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and other states in the Southsouth under former President Goodluck Jonathan were like wars. “The presidency was so much involved and that gave some PDP top shots and other interested parties the motivation to terrorise the opposition.

“But President Buhari is not interested in who wins elections. He is only interested in the due process not being jettisoned.

“His coming to the presidency is by popular mandate and Mr President is passionate about making our democracy a beacon to other fledging democracies in Africa. No more killing or maiming and whoever does that under whatever guise will face the wrath of the law.”

A professor of History, Banji Akintoye, in his lecture entitled: “The Ekiti Character as a Development Asset  said Ekiti cannot afford to fail because it boasts of brains that can make things happen in the face of difficulty.

  • ‘Leave Ojudu alone’

    ‘Leave Ojudu alone’

The Action Group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has condemned the attempt to kidnap the senator representing Ekiti Central, Babafemi Ojudu.

It was reported that a look-alike of Senator Ojudu was allegedly kidnapped last week and asked by the kidnappers why he wanted to impeach Governor Ayodele Fayose, only to be released after ensuring that he was not Ojudu

In a statement by its spokesperson, Segun Dipe, the Action Group said it was sheer madness that anyone would want to kidnap Senator Ojudu for political gain.

The group called on the police and other security agencies to investigate the matter.

“Ojudu has consistently been the voice of the voiceless, which cannot be gagged by any agent of retrogression. He cannot be denied his fundamental human right of speaking his mind on contentious issues in his state, Ekiti, and his country. He is the spokesperson for the APC Senators and has fought many battles in ensuring that democracy is well rooted in the country.”

  • ‘Stop maligning Senator Ojudu’

    ‘Stop maligning Senator Ojudu’

The civil rights movement in Nigeria has expressed solidarity with the Senator representing Ekiti Central, Babafemi Ojudu, who is being maligned for leading the campaign to sanitise Ekiti.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos, the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of 35 civil rights groups, praised Ojudu for his stand as a tireless defender of truth and liberty, a trait that has won him global fame.

The statement by the NHRC Director of Publicity, Akinola Gbadamosi, urged the Ekiti people not to be distracted by the conscious efforts of Governor Ayo Fayose to discredit one of the most outstanding icons in the battle for liberty in Ekiti.

“Senator Ojudu has a clean record spanning over three decades. He was the journalist who exposed Fayose during his first term in 2004.

“Senator Ojudu did not only write an investigative story that exposed the killing of a pregnant woman for rituals, an unspeakable crime involving top government officials in the administration of Fayose, he went the extra mile to ensure the arrest of those involved.

“The stories were published in The News magazine. The horrendous crime was swept under the carpet by the authorities. From that moment, a seed of discord was planted between Ojudu and Fayose.

“We are following with keen interest the developments in Ekiti State. Fayose wants to do everything to destroy Ojudu’s richly deserved reputation. This task will fail.

“We, in the human rights community, support Mr Ojudu’s crusade against despots in power in Ekiti State. It is a right step in the right direction. No amount of blackmail should stop Mr Ojudu because his battle is righteous and just. History will definitely absolve him.”

  • Ojudu, Omirin demand retraction of ‘bribery’ report

Ojudu, Omirin demand retraction of ‘bribery’ report

Senator Babafemi Ojudu and Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker Dr Adewale Omirin have demanded the retraction of a story and an apology from the Ekiti Broadcasting Service (ESBC) for claiming that they were bribed to impeach Governor Ayo Fayose.

They also demanded N20million damages for the defamatory broadcast, warning that they would begin legal action against ESBC, if the demands are not met.

In separate letters to the Special Adviser Communication and New Media, ESBC, dated April 21, the lawmakers’ lawyer, Abiodun Ayodele, said the news reports brought the image of senator and speaker into disrepute.

“Our client, therefore, wish to demand an unreserved apology from you and your establishment for this defamatory broadcast.

“We demand that this apology broadcast should be on the Ekiti State Broadcasting Service which you had earlier used to peddle the lies. This apology should be on or within the next seven days,” Ayodele wrote.

The lawyer said the offending broadcast on the state radio 91.5FM and on the state television station claimed that the bribe taken by Ojudu and Omirin even caused a quarrel between them.

He said the report was “all in a bid to bring the image of our client to disrepute in the eyes of well meaning Ekiti people;” the people Ekiti Central Senatorial District, who Ojudu represent at the Senate; the people of Gbonyin State Constituency, who Omirin represent, and in the eyes of Nigerians.

“Our client wishes to state in categorical terms that the said news item is not only untrue but is a figment of your imagination…Our client wish to equally demand for the sum of N20million as damages for the said defamatory broadcast.

“Please take note that this letter serve as our pre-action notice should you fail to comply with our client’s demand as contained in this letter,” Ayodele wrote.

Senator Ojudu and Dr Omirin have also petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, alleging threat to their life.

According to them, on April 19, 20 and 21, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Mr Lere Olayinka, posted on his Facebook wall their phone numbers, inciting people to call and threaten them because they allegedly took bribe to impeach Fayose and accused them of being the arrowheads of the impeachment process.

“Since the posting of our clients’ phone numbers on his Facebook wall, our clients have been receiving hundreds of anonymous calls threatening to kill them, their families and to destroy their houses.

“Our clients have been living in fear since then. The calls and threat still persist till today.

“We pray you to use your good office to arrest and prosecute Mr Lere Olayinka and his co-travellers in this threat business before they carry our their threat,” the lawyer wrote.

  • ‘No rift between Omirin, Ojudu’

The Special Adviser on Media to Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Omirin, Wole Olujobi, has said there is no rift between Omirin and Senator Babafemi Ojudu.

In a statement, Olujobi said the report on state media was the figment of the imagination of the persons peddling it.

The statement said the Speaker never engaged in any deal with anyone; “it is not also true that Ojudu collected money to impeach Governor Ayo Fayose in 2006”.

“The report found its way to Channels Television website and upon investigation by the station’s management, it was discovered the report was smuggled into the website by government agents.

“Government agents have put a Channels TV worker in trouble.

“Omirin is not pursuing any governorship ambition. “Allegation of fighting between Ojudu and Omirin over impeachment fund is non-existent and diversionary. Nigerians are not fools. They know all the constitutional infractions Fayose has committed.”

  • We are Nigeria’s problem, Ojudu tells senators, others

We are Nigeria’s problem, Ojudu tells senators, others

Senator Babafemi Ojudu, representing Ekiti Central, said yesterday at the Senate that Nigeria’s bane is leadership.

He said: “Whenever you have a weak, visionless and feckless leadership, you cannot but have these problems we have in the country today.”

Ojudu spoke while contributing to a motion by Senator Barnabas Gemade and supported by the senators on the recent killings in Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and other parts of the country.

The motion, which is detailed and has been the longest so far in the Senate, contains information and statistics on the killings in the country.

The lawmaker said leadership was the country’s problem.

Said he: “How many issues are we going to declare emergence on? We have declared emergency in some

states and it is not working. We have called for emergency in education, unemployment and on the economy. These emergencies will not solve our problems. Rather, we should look inward, as our problem is that of failure of leadership.”

Ojudu, spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the Senate, said he is not talking about leadership in Aso Rock, but also among lawmakers, in the states and at other levels of leadership.

He said: “It is because we have failed as leaders that this nation is collapsing under our watch.”

  • Ekiti governorship: Opeyemi Bamidele has dumped APC, says Ojudu

Ekiti governorship: Opeyemi Bamidele has dumped APC, says Ojudu

FOLLOWING months of speculations, there were strong indications yesterday that Hon. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele has finally left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Labour Party (LP). This disclosure was made by Senator Babafemi Ojudu yesterday, at an Interactive Forum between the state’s National Assembly members and party faithful in Ikere- Ekiti. Ojudu said Bamidele, who represents Ado/ Irepodun/ Ifelodun Federal Constituency, had met with the leadership of the APC during the week to announce his decision to call it quits with the party. It will be recalled that the lawmaker, who has been at loggerheads with the leadership of the APC over an undisclosed grouse with Governor Kayode Fayemi, has made several public comments regarding his decision to contest next year’s governorship election. Opeyemo had repeatedly asserted that he would contest the election to bring development and hope to the state, a feat he accused the current leadership in the state of having failed to achieve. Senator Ojudu explained that he met with the Interim Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande on Wednesday and Senator Bola Tinubu on Thursday, insisting that his decision to call it quits with the party “was final and irreversible.” According to Senator Ojudu, Opeyemi went in company of the Anglican Bishop Oloniyo, former VIce Chancellor of University of Science and Technology, Ifaki- Ekiti, Prof. Oluwasanmi and others. According to him, Bamidele attended a meeting with Senator Tinubu in his Lagos home from Wednesday evening till 4 am on Thursday. The senator said: “Two days ago, Bamidele informed the National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande of his intention to leave the party, and also went to our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to inform him of his intention to quit the APC for another progressive party to realize his ambition, since the party has adopted Fayemi for a second term in office.” Tinubu reportedly informed Opeyemi that the party could not go back on the choice of Governor Kayode Fayemi, as he has performed well. However, speaking with journalists on phone, Opeyemi denied the claim that he had left the APC. He, however, confirmed that he met with leaders of the party, a move he described as personal.
