  • Ikpeazu receives Certificate of Return

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday issued a Certificate of Return to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia and his deputy, Chief Ude Chukwu.

Ikpeazu won the governorship election for a second tenure on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party.

Speaking at the event, which took place at the INEC office in Umuahia, he restated his commitment to embark on programmes that would fast track infrastructure development.

He said that he would strive to improve on the administration’s performance of the five pillars in the areas of education, industrialisation, trade, commerce and agriculture.

He also promised to initiate policies and programmes that would drive the process for job creation to provide employment for the teeming unemployed youths of the state.

The governor extended the olive branch to his opponents at poll and urged them to join hands with his administeation to take Abia to greater height.

“This is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the welfare of Abia people.

“I said in 2015 that this government is for the common and ordinary people,” Ikpeazu said, while rededicating himself to greater service to the state.

He commended INEC “for conducting in Abia one of the most transparent elections in Nigeria.”
He also lauded security agencies for their role in ensuring that Nigeria remained united and peaceful country.

Earlier, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu, the National Commissioner of INEC, called on the elected people to consider their victory at the polls as an expression of trust from the people.

Ibeanu charged them not to betray the confidence but make the people’s welfare a top priority.
“In Nigeria, we need to develop a culture of post-election healing. Elections are necessarily divisive and even more so in our context.

“We must work together and I request you to treasure this mandate and at the end of the day you would have written your names in gold,” he said.

Also, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Joseph Iloh, appealed to the elected representatives to address the basic infrastructure needs of the people.

Iloh also commended the security agencies for providing a conducive environment for the peaceful conduct of the 2019 general elections in the state.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that certificates of return were also presented to the 24 members-elect of the state House of Assembly.

  • Abia PDP organising secretary resigns

One of the State Executive members of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), St. Moses Ogbonna on Tuesday resigned his position as the Organizing Secretary of the party in the state.

Ogbonna cited strained relationships between him and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as well as the State chairman of the party, Sir Johnson Onuigbo as part of the reason that informed his decision to quit the party.

Ogbonna, who stated this in a letter signed by him, alleged that he had been excluded from all activities of the party ranging from the 2016 council polls to the party primaries.

He further noted that his life has been threatened as a result of his outspokenness against what he described as impunity and imposition in the party.

“My decision is reached upon my painstaking review of the relationship between the governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and the state chairman, Sir Johnson Onuigbo which over the period have by several conducts consistently exhibited loss of confidence and trust culminating into deliberate usurpation of my duties with impunity. This brazen act of impunity has led to the total neglect of the SWC and state exco of the party.

“The party is now being run as one man show and every important decision including financial matters and ratification of the results of the primaries was done in a hotel without the approval of the SWC. I, as the Organizing secretary have been excluded from all activities of the party. Every message to the national headquarters that needed to emanate from my office was done by the state chairman,” the letter read in part.

Ogbonna also alleged that the Abia PDP secretariat is deserted as exco members and workers of the party have been abandoned to suffer while being owed for 6 months.

The Nation gathered that Ogbonna was among the nineteen Executive members of the party who had on November 27, 2018 in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting to access the state of affairs in the party in the state, resolved among other things to pass a vote of no confidence on the State chairman of the party. This is even as they had setup a seven-man disciplinary committee to investigate alleged illegalities and maladministration of Ounigbo.

It was learnt that the impeachment of the State Chairman was however jettisoned by the members of the party’s State Executive through the intervention of Governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and other stakeholders of the party within 48hrs the members of the executive had directed that State Vice Chairman, Hon. P. C Onyegbu to act as the substantive chairman of the party in the state.

A source in the party who would not want its name in print expressed worries over development of events in the party in recent times and called on the Governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and other stakeholders to come to a roundtable to address some of the issues that may tear the party apart which the source said could affect the chances of the party winning the February 23rd and March 9th elections in the state.

Attempts to reach the Abia State chairman, PDP, Sir Johnson Onuigbo failed as their mobile lines were unreachable.

But a source close to the Onuigbo disclosed that the chairman and the state publicity secretary of the party in the state, Chief Don Ubani were in Abuja for a crucial meeting of the party’s stakeholders holding Tuesday.

  • First Aba rainfall causes havoc

The first rainfall of 2019 in Abia State have left many residents of Aba, the commercial nerve center of the state to groan in pains following the damage it had on the property.

While many residents of the business-minded city had gone out to their respective offices and business centers without anticipating any rain with the city having 20percent chance of rainfall according to an early morning weather forecast, they were shocked when the rain unannounced hit the streets of the city.

The city which had most of its drainage blocked was flooded within few minutes of the rain, causing gridlock on major streets and roads as vehicle owners and commuters struggle for space on the road.

Some of the residents whose houses were submerged as a result of the rain have sent out appeal to the state Governor; Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu following the damage they suffered in the rainfall that lasted for about two hours.

They feared that if there would be any rain this month, the situation could become terrible.

Our reporter who visited several places within the metropolis and its environs report that a lot of residents suffered so much damage and has worsened the deplorable nature of roads leading to their residents.

Residents living in some of the areas where reconstruction of road projects have been abandoned by the respective contractors want government to order the contractors back to site and feared that if the works linger till the rainy season sets, it could force them out of their residential quarters.

Ndiegoro, Uratta, the Over-Rail, Port Harcourt road and among other places suffered the heaviest casualty within the axis of the commercial city that was hit by the rain.

Some of the residents who spoke to our reporter said that the last two months of 2018 were more of a miracle to them as they did their businesses smoothly with the dry season helping to dry up their roads.

Speaking to our reporter, Mr. Maxwell Mbagwu, a landlord at Obohia Road, off Nkwo-Ngwa Market in Ndiegoro axis of Aba South Local Government Area of the state said he is afraid because he knows that him and his tenants are about to see the painful part of 2019 faster than expected.

He said: “To be honest with you, I don’t hate rain. But I now fear rainy season because of where I found myself. The weather is too hot, yet people like me are afraid of seeing rain. Do you think that’s normal?

“You came here by yourself and you can see why we are afraid. We are about to begin a new phase of our suffering for this year so so early. I was thinking that it will be by February, but it took us all by surprise yesterday.

“I pity my tenants and myself as well. They’ll pay rents in pains and I will be collecting with remorse. Most of them who have cars do park along the good portions of the road or even as far as other adjoining street.

“For me I can’t drive again because it’s more cost effective to enter Keke than to destroy your car. The truth and nothing but the truth is that Abia State Government has abandoned us. We plead that they remember that we are humans and still alive.”

A resident of Igbere Road off Ohazu Road, within the same Ndiegoro axis who simply gave her name as Mrs. Celine pleaded with the governor Ikpeazu to instruct the contractors handling the Igbere road to come back to site.

Celine said that the abandoned drainage from Ngwa Road to Igbere Road, channeled all storm water from yesterday’s rain into their residents thereby making them homeless.

“Our homes were like river yesterday. Those who went out couldn’t return while those of us at home had to endure the whole problem. We don’t know if they have stopped the construction, but the drainage stopped that place you’re seeing there.

“We are suffering and we plead with the governor to save us before we perish. The smell of the storm water is what no one should wish his enemy to perceive. We are pleading for mercy and help please.

“For some years now, our children contract different disease and we waste money that could have been used for other things on hospital bills. We the adults get injured on daily basis. We only enter our homes by climbing blocks and planks placed on the roads which often lead to injury.

“Just few days to the New year, we are back to it again. The contractors have all disappeared. We are now leaving like pigs in the midst of debris and mosquitoes. Aside the state of our finance, we cannot be in this kind of place, “she lamented.

Kelechi Onuigbo, a commercial motorcyclist in Amaukwu Road along Uratta axis of Aba told New Telegraph that he fears a drop of rain more than the sound of a gun as the rain is more of an enemy to his welfare than any other thing.

“I’m nothing before God to tell Him what to do. But if I have power to suggest to the Almighty God, I’ll plead that He restricts rain from touching Uratta Road and its environs because what ought to be a blessing is now a curse to us here. Our government is wicked and most of our political office holders are inhuman.

“They often tell us how the rain disturbed construction works, but what did they do with the space provided by the dry season? One of them brought people from Abuja to Uratta Road with the claim that they are going to flag of the construction of the road just few days after their visit, but as you can see with your eyes, nothing is happening and our sufferings is about to get worst,” he said.

Also at the Over-Rail axis of the commercial city, the story is the same as most residents see the coming back of the rain as more of the biblical returning to Egypt.

The panic of the looming dangers the rain is coming with was residents of Osusu Road, Omuma Road and Cemetery Road all in Over-Rail lamented about the bad state of their roads and called on the state government to do the needful.

The worst hit in the Over-Rail axis is the Osusu Road where Abia State Government demolished buildings, created new waterways for the construction of drainage, but has since several months back left the road untouched.

  • Paste campaign posters on your project -APC tell Ikpeazu

Abia State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday asked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to remember to paste his posters only on his projects executed by his administration.

Governor Ikpeazu had in some public functions 2017/18 while reeling out what he has been able to achieve within the three years of his administration in the state was quoted to have urged anyone gunning for elective position in the state, especially governorship position to paste his or her campaign poster(s) on project(s) he or she has done in the state for Abians to see.

The APC who just came back from a tour of completed and ongoing projects by the incumbent administration in the state, irked by what they met on ground has asked Gov. Ikpeazu to fulfill his promise by directing his supporters to paste his posters on projects that he has been able to execute in the state under his administration.

Comrade Benedict Godson, the Publicity Secretary of the party in a chat with journalists in Umuahia, the Abia State capital noted that the incumbent leadership in the state has resorted to media hype of incomplete, abandoned and substandard projects in the state.

Godson who said that they were baffled with the realization that most of the projects the government is claiming to have executed were only done and completed on radio wondered why the Ikpeazu led government has embraced deceit than delivering dividend of democracy to the people of the state.

The spokesman of the APC who further stated that most of the completed projects that the state government is claiming to have attracted or executed were awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), said it was laughable that someone who knows he has nothing to offer to the people of the state would wake up and start making boastful claims that will ridicule his government before any discerning Abian.

Godson who stated that APC is coming to change the narrative of PDP misgovernance in the state over the years, enjoined Abians to ensure that they voted out all the PDP candidates in the state come 2019, starting from February 16.

“We are urging him to remain a gentleman and keep to his boast. The man campaigned in 2014-2015 and pasted his posters in many places, but in the euphoria of being a sitting governor he began to make reckless and boastful political comments about where people should paste posters during campaigns.

“On several occasions, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu boasted and said that during campaigns, everyone should paste their posters on their works or projects, but we have being waiting for him to start such, but he can’t.

“He cannot start it because he has done absolutely nothing for four years! Where is he going to paste them? as a gentleman man, he has wholeheartedly accepted that he has done absolutely nothing in the state until recently when his errand boys decided to do otherwise.

“What are his posters doing in the streets of Aba, a city he left to decay? We urged him to remain truthful to himself and not be deceived to go about pasting posters anyhow on roads that are death traps and that experimental flyover projects being executed by Civil Engineering students on their Industrial Training at Osisioma.

“It’s obvious he has not done anything and we are pleading with him to caution his errand boys from disobeying his rule by pasting his posters on electric polls, peoples fences, church fences, school fences and other strategic places which he has nothing to do with.

“They should respect him for it’s very wrong to do what ones master is against. If they want to do his wish in accordance with his boast, let them paste his posters at that funny Osisioma flyover and on abandoned road projects like the Port Harcourt Road, Immaculate Avenue, Osusu, Ngwa Road, Obohia, Aba-Road in Umuahia, Emelogu Bridge, Emelogu dumping site and so many other sorry sights in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia.

“Why are they pasting his posters at Asa Road and other motorable axis of Aba which he had no hands in making them the way they are? Are those places his project? He should keep to his words and let’s see if there is a single place especially in Aba that he can paste posters.

Abia State Command of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in collaboration with other sister security agencies in the state on Tuesday hold a Joint Show of Force (JSF) operation in major cities of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Chris Ezike in a telephone interview told our reporter that the command arrested thirty seven members of outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia, the state capital who he said dressed in Jewish robe while they joined their counterparts in the state to observe the group’s planned 10million march protest of the group.

Ezike added that the personnel of the command also recovered Israelie and Biafra insignia from the IPOB members. This is even as he stated the law will soon take its cause after they have profiled members of the outlawed group.

Information gathered by our reporter has it that the protesters trooped out in their thousands and began the peaceful protest around 10:00am from the Hotel Damgrate axis of Library Avenue (Bank Road); some distance from the home of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters comprising men, women and children were said to be chanting songs in Hebrew language, singing pro -Biafra songs, waving Biafra and Israeli flags as they marched the streets of Umuahia.

The protest, which was said to be peaceful turned bad when the protesters who were heading towards the popular Isi-Gate were intercepted and ordered to a halt at the Okpara Square by heavily armed policemen in over four pick -up vans intercepted the protesters and ordered them to halt the movement.

The security men were said to have allegedly started firing teargas canisters to disperse the protesters which resulted to chaos in the area as traders and passersby scamper for safety.

Unconfirmed report has it that a resident of Umuahia believed to be an asthmatic patient in the area who inhaled the teargas slumped but was however rushed out of the scene with the help of a commercial tricyclist that reportedly took the victim to an undisclosed hospital.

Our reporter who also monitored the march in Aba where the IPOB were said to have high followership reports that security agencies including Army, Civil Defence, regular police and tactical commanders of Police Mobile Force (PMF), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as early as 7am moved in a convoy round major streets of Aba.

Areas covered by the team include Ariaria market, Azikiwe road, Faulks road, Aba-Owerri road, Port Harcourt road among others.

A senior Police officer in Aba Area Command who spoke on anonymity told our reporter that no arrest was made in Aba as there were no IPOB or Jewish protesters on the streets of Aba.

The source while urging Aba residents to go about their business without fear of molestation, added that the police and other sister agencies were committed in making sure that there was peace and security of lives and property in the commercial town during and after the festive period.

In a related development, the leadership of IPOB who gave the number of the arrested members as fifty four (54) frowned at what it described as incessant arrest of the Jewish worshippers and IPOB members by security agents in the state.

IPOB in a release signed by its spokesman, Emma Powerful threatened that they were going to notify Jewish Community all over the world about the deliberate attempt by security agencies in Nigeria and Abia State in particular to clampdown on members of the religious faith who were even peaceful while exercising their fundamental human rights.

“We are warning Abia state police commissioner to release them, the 54 innocent citizens of Biafra who were doing peaceful evangelism in Umuahia for Biafra freedom. We blame Okezie Ikpeazu and Abia police commissioner the damage this action may cause in Abia state if they fail to release these innocent Jewish worshipers exercising their rights. Okezie Ikpeazu and police commissioner must release those arrested without further delay or they will live to regret what will come upon them soon.

“IPOB is firmly rooted with peaceful way to restore Biafra and cannot change its resolve to become violent organization because of high handedness Nigeria Government and her security agencies especially police and army officers are using against IPOB members since inception of this peaceful means adopted by our supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We are calling on Nigeria Police and Army officers to stop this humiliation and harassment forthwith on anybody identified with IPOB family worldwide or face the consequences.

“We are aware that Abia police commissioner and other security officers in Umuahia Abia state are working hard to please their Hausa Fulani slaves’ masters in Abuja but Hausa Fulani caliphate and their collaborators must deny them at the appropriate time.

“However, IPOB must not fail to warn police commissioner and Okezie Ikpeazu once again if they fail to release these innocent citizens who committed no crime against anybody or Nigeria state that means they should prepare and wait for IPOB action. We are coming on Nigeria police soon because you cannot continue killing and intimidating innocent and unarmed IPOB faithful and go Scot free.

“We promise to remain peaceful in every of our approach asking Nigerian government never push IPOB to pick up arms against anybody because it won’t be good to all and sundry in Nigeria,” the statement read
