  • I’m PDP’s valid candidate for Anambra Central, says Okonkwo

I’m PDP’s valid candidate for Anambra Central, says Okonkwo

Senator Annie Okonkwo has faulted Wednesday’s Federal High Court judgment which proclaimed Obiora Okonkwo as the  Anambra Central Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2015 election as replacement for Seantor Uche Ekwunife.

On account of the judgment, Obiora Okonkwo has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requesting for a certificate of return.

But yesterday, Senator Okonkwo, who previously represented the district in a statement, said he is “completely shocked by this latest curious judicial harvest to a litigant from the shadows, who plied fables as facts and gained concurrence from a respected high court veteran of Justice John Tsoho’s admirable pedigree.

“It is sometimes fitfully amazing how our hallowed judicial temples can be deliberately misled, perhaps inadvertently, to contrive somersaults of superior court verdicts on a settled matter.

“Let it be recalled and I say this with responsibility from the records, that on this vexed matter of who was and still is, the validly nominated PDP candidate for Anambra Senatorial zone for the 2015 general elections, Sen. Annie Okonkwo was the one by law and legitimate party processes.

“I graciously emerged the duly nominated candidate of the party from the INEC recognised and approved primary. The party hierarchy validated my candidature by submission to INEC, who accepted and published my name to canvass and win the votes for the PDP.

“The PDP won that election but crowned the wrong Laurette, and the sequence of comedies ensued.

“Let me make it simpler and clearer that you cannot build something on nothing. There were two parallel PDP primaries for that election. Mine was recognised, accepted and adopted by party and law. The other was not, but connived to ambush my victory until pronounced dead for illegitimacy by a far superior court of records.

In that instance, every foundation from that platform that has fallen by conclusive judicial sword, cannot stand however remotely and cleverly manufactured.

“The most reasonable expectations from our people since then, has been that common sense and fairness should prevail, and the senatorial victory as wrought in the other two districts of my state by PDP be returned to me given the enormous sacrifices and strings of litigation wins.

“I’m persuaded and expectant too as my people, that for the content of that judgment as reported to wear the apparel of true justice, it must admit to a simple name correction as the victor, which should read Senator Annie Okonkwo, not the mimic it has currently.

“Advisedly, no claimant as this case presently suggests, should emerge from the ruins of a pronounced wreckage to wave a resurrection judgement without recourse to documented facts of record and precedence.

“It has remained my firm belief and prayers that the bizarre  circumstances and perfidy that has denied Anambra Central zone, one of the most sophisticated and  cultured constituency in this country, a voice in our highest legislative chamber for reasons of inordinate conspiracies to deny them their expressed preference will one day soon come to be.”

  • Okonkwo rallies support for Obiano

    Okonkwo rallies support for Obiano

A former member of the National Assembly from Anambra State, Senator Annie Okonkwo, has urged the electorates to re-elect Governor Willie Obiano.

Okonkwo, who is behind the Agunechemba Support Group for Obiano, said the state would fare well if the governor gets a second term.

He said: “With less a month to the inevitable re-election of the governor, it has become imperative to note that this is a ‘fait accompli’ that must be translated to mission accomplished, because all other contenders  has brought nothing new to the table. They have been fairly weighted and properly scaled, we have seen their flag offs and take off rhetorics, but the truth remains that Governor Obiano is not just the best deal. He is actually the only deal in this critical matter for sustainable governance and development of the state. The rest are playmakers possibly good for the compliments.

“I speak to you from the history of our known grassroots bond, and the benefit of an established highest level participant in equitable politics, that wisdom and fair judgment demand that we work together and return the incumbent with even bigger margins.

“This is because we have seen from our experiences that building on our culture of stability is the most critical cornerstone for progress, continuous transformation and incremental prosperity of our people. So, mandate renewal for the governor is not just for his documented accomplishments, it is a preference that is right for the known over the unknown, a red card for deceit and vendetta, and a loud nay to ‘try-your-luck’ candidates with their bag of tricks and cartons of promises”.

“It will be poisonous to allow the person or people who ‘served’ us Obiano to ruin our appetite with new aromas from the same kitchen, when we are just half done, because you can never know the spin the chef is making. It is a fatal disservice to our people for anyone to sabotage a flight at cruise level just because you disembarked willfully.”

The ex-senator went on: “And permit me to straighten this  narrative decidedly, we deserve the respect and the truth that the Anambra tempo of growth and successes, was not anybody’s special rocket science and prerogatives. It was a logical flow from a hard won stability of tenure with a first full beneficiary. The first should therefore allow the  second fair grip on the baton he exchanged.

“The politics of good governance in Anambra state is not, and cannot be any man’s wish pot to mix and brew, serve and remove, even when it’s so unnecessary, because we the citizens are the real stakeholders in the outcomes. Therefore, we should not be part of anyone’s sterile misadventure and comedy of after thoughts, which, efforts  sadly should have been engaged more productively.”

  • Why Nigerians must patronise local goods, by Akande, Okonkwo, others

Nigerians must patronise local goods to aid socio-economic growth.

This was the consensus at the 18th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture in Lagos.

Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president Chief Nike Akande; chairman of Erisco Foods, Chief Eric Umeofia, and Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Church (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, agreed with other stakeholders that increased patronage of local goods will take the nation out of the woods.

Okonkwo, who celebrated his 72nd birthday at the event, implored Nigerians not to lose faith in the nation but encourage local manufacturers by patronising them.

This, he said, will encourage the manufacturers to do more and get more Nigerians gainfully employed.

He acknowledged that the present administration is working hard to reposition the economy but said it is also important for Nigerians to do their part by taking advantage of the campaign for made in Nigeria goods.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, ‘Made-in-Nigeria products: The Vehicle for Sustainable Development’, Umeofia, who was the special guest of honour, urged the current administration to implement many of his laudable policies.

He said implementation remained an albatross for the growth of local entrepreneurs.

Umeofia lamented that the difficulties in accessing Forex by local manufacturers remained a stumbling block.

He advised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to change its approach on FX distribution as the present arrangement favours importers instead of local manufacturers.

He also called on the government to develop infrastructure if it is actually serious about its diversification agenda.

The guest lecturer, Akande, said the current administration’s efforts at developing local industry are actually yielding fruits but pointed out that there are still rooms for improvement.

The former Minister of Industry said Nigerians must also set their priorities if they want the economy to develop.

“When you buy made-in-Nigeria, you are promoting local economic growth which will attract new talents and professionals, who may, in turn, create businesses of their own, enhancing the domestic economy,” she stressed.

She cited the cement industry pioneered by Dangote Cement as well as Innoson Plc already exporting made-in Nigeria products to neighbouring countries.

According to her, there are other inclusive ways to achieve sustainable development without building the right economic foundation of patronising made-in-Nigeria goods and services.

Miss Alexander Nwigwe of Vivian Fowler Memorial College, Lagos, was the overall best student of the 14th edition of Mike Okonkwo National Essay for Secondary Schools.

She went home with N100, 000 while the school got two desktop computers.

Miss Jesuduntan Mercy of Corona Secondary School, Lagos, was second.

She got N75, 000 and a desktop computer, while Master Akingbade Gbenga of Emerald High School was third.

He won N50, 000 and a desktop for his school.

The 4th-10th position winners received a consolation cash of N20, 000 and a certificate of participation each.

Bosso suspends, fines Yahuza Bala, Okonkwo, Haliru

El Kanemi Warriors technical adviser, Ladan Bosso has placed a fine on three of his players for indiscipline, SportingLife can reveal.

The affected players, Yahuza Bala, Chibuzor Okonkwo and Hashimu Haliru were sanctioned following their misconduct during Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Lobi Stars in the match day 35 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) encounter at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.

The club’s striker Bala, who joined the northern outfit during the mid-transfer window was placed on a three-match suspension and a fine of N50,000  for attacking centre referee and N10,000  for collecting a yellow card after the end of the match.

The club’s right full back and former Youth international Chibuzor Okonkwo was fined N20, 000  for challenging the referee’s red card decision while the defensive midfielder Hashimu Haliru was fined N40,000  for staying too long before he returned to the pitch when he went out to change his boot.

Bosso told SportingLife that the management has been informed about the development and the money would be deducted from their August salaries.

“Yes, I have told the management about the fine and it will take effect from this month’s salary. We cannot allow indiscipline to go on in the team,” Bosso told SportingLife.

  • Those against restructuring are enemies of Nigeria -Okonkwo

Those against restructuring are enemies of Nigeria -Okonkwo

The former President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria ( PFN) and Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) Dr. Mike Okonkwo, in this chat with journalists after the conclusion of the 2017 edition of TREM’s Leading Edge Conference in Abuja, bared his mind on the current agitation for restructuring in the country and other issues. Victor Oluwasegun was there. Excerpts

PEOPLE are saying that restructuring is the solution to the problem of the country. What is your opinion? When it’s the season for something, you can’t hold back the season. Like you rightly said, there has never been so much agitation for restructuring as like it is now. Even those who had hitherto been indifferent to it and never touched it are now beginning to touch it. That’s an indication that the hour has come. I believe with all my heart that if this nation is restructured, it will help us to be creative. It will take us faster than we expected. It would make even those that are in politics to be creative because what most of them are doing is to go cap in hand, run to Abuja and collect money and squander it and nothing is happening. But now, your people will demand accountability, competition would be all over the place. If I’ve seen result in Kebbi State, Sokoto and Zamfara, and I’m supposed to be in Niger and no result, I would ask my governor what is it this person is doing differently that you’re not doing? Same thing applies to the East. It will bring real competition for development in different parts of this country. To be honest with you, I feel ashamed sometimes to answer Nigerian in the sense that this nation is highly endowed in human and material resources…I mean, we have what it takes to be a giant amongst comity of nations, not just in Africa but amongst the nations of the world. But look at where we are. The other nations have moved on. I read in the newspapers that Dubai in 2020 would not be using petrol again. In other words, their petrol stations would be shut down. What they would have would be recharge stations and the cars would be moved by electricity, and we are still talking about oil. So, there’s an issue. We need to restructure. For me, anybody who refuses restructuring is an enemy of this country.

Can we achieve restructuring peacefully in this country?

It is possible if our lawmakers, those in National Assembly would give it a chance. When they say no, then there would be violence because people want it… They better soft- pedal and know that they are to serve the people and not themselves. Once that is done, there would be no violence. No one wants war, more especially if you have experienced it once. That is why most of our young people who are agitating for war, I keep telling them, calm down, you don’t understand war; if you understand war, you will not ask for it. Everything can be resolved on the table and not to go to war. In a war, you can lose everything you have in a day; everything you have laboured for from the day you were born. In a day, everything is lost. In a war, you can lose your entire family. And so, you’ve done that in the 1960s to 70s and we know what it cost us. We shouldn’t do that, let’s give peace a chance.

What role can the church play in this situation?

Of course, the church is playing its role by telling our people not to join the people who are agitating for war. I do that. Don’t join them, that’s not the best way to go. There is no nation that doesn’t have problems. We can resolve our issues on the conference table. Let us abuse ourselves; let us fight ourselves, when we finish, let us still come back to the table; we can still agree.

Going back to restructuring, the National Assembly which could have given legal backing to that aspect in the constitution amendment rejected it. What’s your response to that?

I believe they will still go back to it. There is a limit to which you can reject the people’s agitation. As long as they’re rejecting it, there will still be pressure groups; people will still be talking, the Biafran people will still be creating problems, and when it becomes a national issue, they would be forced to address it. So, for me, I think that’s the best thing to do; not to run from it. If the people in the National Assembly care for the people, why are they afraid of restructuring? What’s wrong with restructuring and letting every state develop at its own pace and contribute to the centre? What’s wrong in that? That was how the regions were operating before…the Western Region. Northern Region, and Eastern Region, and all of them were progressing with groundnut, cocoa, coal and palm oil. We were able to build universities, our rails and other facilities were working. It is because we discovered oil and everyone is running into oil. For me, any person in the National Assembly saying there should be no restructuring is there to service his belly; he is not serving the nation.

And what is your opinion on the South East Development Commission Bill that failed in the House of Representatives?

That’s one of the reasons again for the agitation for Biafra. If the truth must be told, the South-East has been marginalised. That’s the truth. It has been marginalised and now, young people are coming up and saying enough is enough! I believe that restructuring will address this imbalance. Personally, I won’t advocate a geographical Biafra; I would advocate a restructuring. Because my question when people raise the issue of Biafra is this: I believe that even in the mind of Kanu himself, he may not be looking for a geographical Biafra; he may be saying hey, address the imbalance, but we will pressurize you with this. And people should better listen to that guy because he has crowd. Let me be honest with you, you can’t stop him. I don’t know how he pulled that off, but you must give that to him. In fact, if I have the opportunity to talk to him, my advice to him would be that he should connect with the other pressure groups…Arewa, Oduduwa…. connect with all of them so that we can make our politicians know that the chicken has come home to roost; that they can no longer cheat and deceive the people. If you’re not ready to serve, get out of the way. That would be my own direction.

We’re considered to be a religious country, yet we seem to produce the kind of leaders who don’t care about the welfare of the people. Where did we get it wrong?

Wrong teaching, that’s where we got it wrong.  From the pulpit; those on the pulpit have to go back to the Bible and begin to preach the truth and complete gospel that will truly change people. What we have now is a bunch of hypocrites in the Church. They tell people everything that is wrong with them but without a solution on how to get out of it. So, you have told him, you are wrong, this is what is wrong with your life, try and do this so that you can change, and they try it and see it’s not working. They blend in and begin to pretend they are Christians. So, when they now have to confront the gladiators in the frontline, their Christianity will fall like a pack of cards because they did not receive the true gospel. So, we must go back to the pulpit to preach because if the people receive wrongly, they will behave wrongly. And that is what we’re seeing in the society. And I’m ashamed, we have crowds in meetings, crowds in our programmes, but where is the result on our society? The effect is not there, no development. The purpose of speaking in tongues is not to speak in tongues; the reason is to be empowered to impact society. But it’s not there because the people are thought the wrong things. So, that’s what we’re facing in our nation. So, the church has failed in that area. But I believe that the church leaders are beginning to realise that and are they are to address it from their different pulpits. In the next few years,

  • Okonkwo makes appearance in new episode of Glo’s Professor Johnbull

Nollywood legend Kenneth Okonkwo  (Andy of Living in Bondage) makes a dramatic appearance in the new episode of the TV Drama Series, Professor Johnbull, sponsored by integrated telecommunications company, Globacom.

He plays the role of a family man confronted with conflicting interests of protecting his wife and also accommodating his troublesome relatives, who make his home their abode.

The new episode of the sitcom, titled: Married to the Family, sees Okonkwo (Chijioke in the episode) trying to strike a balance in the delicate intricacies of maintaining peace in the home front while at the same time trying to uphold the traditional African view of extended family ties, which are regarded as sacrosanct.

A statement issued by the company over the weekend stated that Married to the Family ”is an exposition on the African values and peculiarities as they relate to the institution of marriage and how it goes beyond the two individuals involved to the extended family ties, even unto the third generation”.

“The tensions in many homes today are caused by the African man’s concept of marriage and its requirements. Africa’s world view about marriage is no doubt fantastic. However, there are some inherent excesses in the world and these excesses are, to a greater extent, inimical to the peace in many homes. The roles of in-laws in making or marring homes cannot be wished away. This is why every individual desirous of a tension-free home should book a date with Married to the Family, the statement added.

According to the statement, the repeat episode will be aired on Friday at 8.30 p.m. on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes.

Okonkwo vows to keep touching lives at 65

Thousands of less privileged Nigerians last Saturday besieged the international headquarters of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) for free screening and medical treatment.

Tagged Peace campaign, the initiative was to kick-off activities marking the 65th birthday of the resident pastor of the church, Bishop Peace Okonkwo.

It featured screening for sugar level, BP, prostrate & breast cancer, as well as blood level.

Over 50 medical personnel attended to the surging crowd at the premises of the church, many of whom started arriving as early as 6am.

Okonkwo said the free screening and medical outreach was the least she could do to thank God.

“God has been good to me. There is nothing else I can do for Him than to bless lives and put smiles on faces,” she stated.

She said the initiative has continued to enjoy corporate and individual support because it was touching lives.

Okonkwo vowed to stop at nothing to mitigate the sufferings of people.

“There is no looking back for me. It has been on for years and has come to stay.

“How can I stop when more and more people are suffering? How can I stop when things are getting tougher for people?

“No matter what happens, touching lives will always be part of me. It is the least I can do to thank God for bringing me from a lowly state to where I am today,” she stressed.

She said the gesture was not because she had more than enough, pointing out that she depends on God for every provision.

“It’s not because I have. I still have to depend on God for everything. But God can always use anything to change lives.

“I have made myself available to touch lives and God has been faithful to provide to cater for that. It’s His project, not mine.”

At 65, she said she would devote her life to serving God and humanity in every way possible.

“I am always available for Him. I am just saying, ‘Lord, here am I. Use me and send me wherever you want.’”

Okonkwo urges Nigerians to be steadfast

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Ministry, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, has urged Nigerians to be steadfast and courageous in this season of economic recession.

Okonkwo, in his message at the 7th Graduation Ceremony and Entrepreneurship Seminar of Empowerment for the Less Privileged Foundation, – a non-governmental organisation that is committed to alleviating the plight of the less-privileged in the society – said that Nigerians should be positively spirited in this present situation.

”Irrespective of the economy challenge, Nigerians can always surmount any economy challenge if they don’t lose hope in the development of the country and refuse to be dictated by the economy challenge.”

Okonkwo who is also the founder of the foundation said that there is no obstacle that is not surmountable.

”I believe God for them that no matter the economy challenge, they should be positive in life and they will overcome it.”

The foundation that has trained over 3,500 youths in various entrepreneurial skills such as bead making, catering, computer training, fashion designing, hair barbing, hair dressing, hat making, metal works and soap making graduated another 256 students and offered 51 scholarships to brilliant students in the society, and over 2,500 students have received free tutorials from various centres spread across Lagos State with over 2,500 people benefitting from the foundation’s free medical outreach programmes.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the wife of the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, said that education is not a bearer, but a good complement to live a successful and fulfilling life.

Represented by Mrs Sade Odunlami,  Ambode congratulated the beneficiaries, graduands, and strongly urged them to take possession of the abundant opportunities awaiting them through the efficient deployment of the vocational skills that they have acquired in the course of their training.

”I advise you to make the best of the opportunities to become self-reliant and job creators,” she said.

One of the parents of the participants, Gabriel Ogunwole from Agege, thanked the Bishop for establishing ELP to help many to gain skills that will make their lives meaningful.
