  • Nigeria needs prayers, says Okonkwo

Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, has called on Nigerians to intensify prayer to overcome the biting economic recession.

Okonkwo, in his independence message, urged Nigerians not to lose hope but put their trust solely in God.

According to him: “Irrespective of the challenges currently facing us as a nation, I am a firm believer that prayers can change situations and circumstances, no matter how complex they may look.

“Let me use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians particularly Christians to continually pray for our nation and all political office holders for God’s grace and wisdom in steering the ship of this nation so that we would arrive at God’s ordained destiny for us.

“Let us also pray that violence and insurgency will cease in Nigeria because no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of violence.”

He called on political leaders to bury their differences and tackle national issues dispassionately.

“The problem, however, with us as Nigerians, is that rather than deal with issues as they come, we politicise them.

“In the developed nations of the world, they deal with issues holistically without ethnic or tribal sentiments. That is the reason why they seem to be on top of whatever comes their way.

“I still believe we can tackle our internal issues decisively just like we did during the Ebola scourge.

“No one would have believed that we could put that deadly scourge under control in just 93 days, but we did it anyhow.

“If we could deal with Ebola as a nation, then we can also deal with all the other issues confronting us.”

  • Okonkwo pays tribute to in-law

Senator Annie Okonkwo has extolled the virtue of a community leader, Sir Gilbert Onwuamaegbu.

The late Sir Onwuamaegbu was the ex-senator’s father-in-law. He was 93.

The tribute reads: “…Sir Gibert Obiadiwe Onwuamaegbu, Nze Nnanyelugo Oba, was one of mixed emotions. Beautiful and lively most times, painful and uncertain sometimes, but courage and hope all the time.

At times, our search for words to interpret the complexity of life is futile. But yours is an easy narrative. You were loved by many, adored by friends and respected by all.

In our deep and lengthy relationship, there were three epic encounters  that stood above the rest. They are priceless treasures that will forever remain green in my memory.

The first happened when I was just 23 years old, a youth in a hurry to quicken the transition of adolescence to adulthood. You sowed the life seed of confidence in me, when you  gave your princess, Lady Chinyelu, Ugo Agu, to become my peerless jewel as wife, friend and now mother. That has remained my unrivalled testimony.

“Another was when your love and faith in me brought down standing walls of judgment and uncertainties. Though apolitical, you gave unconditional support to my political expeditions with an uncut native intelligence far smarter than consultants. Needless for emphasis, your compulsive nurture to me in business was a heritage of insights from your rich hindsight.

“And the most recent Sir, was when we agreed you will live a 150  years, and set a modern world record on longevity. At 93, you gave it your best shot before succumbing to the immortality of the higher realm. Here, we are consoled to celebrate a real champion of life, whose great grand children are proud bearing colourful banners of goodbye.

“Your footprints will reside within our hearts  to inspire our minds. Your words of wisdom will reflect in our speeches and guide our actions. Your cares and charity without borders already made us committed caregivers voluntarily.

“Your last few years were hard but eventful too. It revealed a new depth of love and shared bonding from Lady Harriet Nkechi Onwuamaegbu, your loyal wife for 50 eight years. She took irrepressible delights and glowed in self denial as she attended to your every detail for succour. And she truly came tops exceptionally.

“There were moments when words failed and tears flowed. Moments when faith was challenged and emotions ran high. But you kept  our hopes renewed in a manner that gave courage a new lease.  That way you made it simpler for us to be gallant and pull through despairs with victory.

“We will all miss you painfully no doubt. We will bear our pains with triumph though. We will comfort your wife and our matriarch. We will ensure she bests your record and make you proud.

“Surely, you were a man of integrity, passion, faith and family. Above all, you were a dedicated son of The Most High God, The Everlasting King upon whose feet you now worship, dance and rejoice.”

“We look up and thank Him really for his many blessings. We thank Him for the man you were. We bless  His name for everyone  here to celebrate the exit of a great ideas enabler and  a solid social energiser.”

Okonkwo happy to banish ‘Makurdi demons’

Chinonso Okonkwo has spoken about his happiness after scoring a spectacular goal for Rivers United in their 4-0 dismantling of Kaduna United in the round of 32 of the Federation Cup on Wednesday.

Okonkwo fired home from 25 yards as Kaduna United was put to the sword in emphatic fashion at the Aper Aku Stadium.

The attacker missed a last-minute penalty at the same Stadium on May 22 as United lost 0-1 to Lobi Stars in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

He voiced his sentiments on scoring such a special goal at a venue that only recently reminded him of so much pain.

“Before I scored (on Wednesday against Kaduna United), I missed a very good chance in the game.

“I felt so bad because the miss was from the same spot that I missed the penalty (against Lobi Stars).

“I was however confident that I would correct that mistake as the game progressed.

“I felt so happy that I eventually scored a (fantastic) goal in the game,” Okonkwo told Rivers United Media.

The attacker concluded by discussing the club’s next NPFL fixture against FC Ifeanyiubah which will be played in Nnewi on June 19.

He admonished that the manner of Wednesday’s big win against Kaduna United may not be repeated unless the players approached the game with the right mentality.

“We have to stay humble and approach the game in Nnewi the right way.

“If we do that, then the chances of us getting a good result will be quite high,” he said.

  • Anambra PDP: Okonkwo remains our candidate

Anambra PDP: Okonkwo remains our candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has told aspirants vying for the party ticket in the Anambra Central senatorial zone to forget it as senator Annie Okonkwo remains the party’s candidate for the election.

Led by Chief Ejike Oguebego, the party told former Governor Peter Obi to forget about the ticket, saying “there is no vacancy”.

Former commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Chief Joe Martins Uzodike said party members had been mounting pressure on Obi to fly the PDP ticket.

He added that the party already held its primaries and was waiting for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to come out with its list of candidates.

However, Oguebego said the party would not trade its ticket, adding that Okonkwo would run on the party’s ticket.

“We are not mincing words on this issue; it is obvious that Senator Okonkwo is the PDP candidate for the Anambra central senatorial zone, based on the Supreme Court judgment.

“Any other person dreaming to succeed Senator Uche Ekwunife should go and rest, there is no vacancy; the party already has its candidate in Okonkwo,” the PDP chairman said.

INEC’s spokesman Frank Egbo refused to comments on the matter. He said the decision on the candidate to contest the election would be taken at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.

  • Ekwunife: Okonkwo hails Appeal Court

    Ekwunife: Okonkwo hails Appeal Court

Senator Annie Okonkwo has hailed the Court of Appeal for the sack of Senator Uche Ekwunife.

She was representing Anambra Central Senatorial district.

Okonkwo, in a statement yesterday, said the court’s decision vindicated his belief that Uche was not validly returned.

The statement by Okonkwo’s media adviser, Collins Ugwu, reads: “The Court of  Appeal final verdict setting aside Uche  Ekwunife’s aberration of victory is proper, timely and natural, because the constant beam of  truth will always outshine the human burden of  lies, darkness and deceit, whether political or otherwise.

“Uche Ekwunife, as entitled as any other aspirant in that contest, certainly was not and should not have been the flag bearer of the party in that election.

“We are therefore aghast but not amused, that citizen Uche Ekwunife who ordinarily should be sobered by this clear constitutional declarations given the wisdom of her political experiences, appear unperturbed and unmindful of elementary party internal democracy norms as evident in her obvious contemplation to re-run in the yet to be scheduled re-election as the candidate of our party PDP.

“The most rigorous, painful and costly processes for any senatorial zone in this country, arrived at Senator Annie Okonkwo as the most popular and validly nominated candidate of the PDP, ultimately endorsed and published as such by INEC, and expectantly wished by Anambra Central electorates to wear the victory cap, but for the reckless impunity of Aso Rock overlords then, which providence and nemesis has through our able judiciary mercifully crushed. “

    Be patient, Okonkwo charges

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, has appealed to Nigerians to give the current administration more time to revive the nation.

He noted the socio-economic difficulties Nigerians have had to live with but said they would soon smile with the ongoing restructuring policies of the current administration.

Okonkwo spoke last Sunday after the opening ceremony of the annual Kingdom Life World Conference (KLWC) of the church at its Lagos Anthony headquarters with the theme “Rest.”

The Buhari-led administration, he pointed out, had made significant progress in power supply and security.

He however stated that much is left to be done, stating these will be sorted out with more support and cooperation from Nigerians.

He blamed the current fuel scarcity on panic buying and the activities of profiteers, saying “Nigerians must learn not to make money from every challenge people face.”

Okonkwo told reporters that the spate of terror attacks worldwide has confirmed that “true and real rest lies only in Jesus Christ.”

He said terror will continue unabated but said only those who depend on God will scale through.

Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, who opened the conference, told participants to rely on God for advancement.

  • My husband has a wonderful fashion sense

My husband has a wonderful fashion sense

Bishop Peace Okonkwo is the Resident Pastor of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM). In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she talks about being married to Bishop Mike Okonkwo for about 35 years, how they met, things they share in common and their passion for rehabilitating young girls.

WHAT is it like being married to Bishop Mike Okonkwo?

Life with Mike Okonkwo is an interesting one but not without challenges. Since I married him about 35 years ago, God has really been our helper all the way. The Bible says we should look up to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith and because we agree together, we overcame. We agree together, stand in faith, trusting God to help us solve this challenges and He has seen us through. It’s not been all rosy. Anyone telling you everything went so beautifully, it is not true. We just hang in there, there is nothing else you can do, and you can’t run from God.

When it comes to God, you run to him, even when there are challenges. He is the one that would see you through. I would say it’s been 35 years of God’s helping us in the ministry and in our home. He has helped us thus far to bring up our daughter, and by the next few months, she would be getting married.

How did you meet your husband?

A long story. I met him in one of the churches. You know when the war ended, people were seeking God, getting close to God because we lost everything. In one of the churches, we were young and everyone felt that we needed God now. That was where I met him but I didn’t meet him first, I met his senior sister, the woman liked me so much. Bishop at that time was very shy; he can’t talk to a woman. He was a very shy person and it was his sister that said, ‘my brother likes you.’

I was surprised and asked which of her brothers liked me because she had six brothers. Then she said the one that works in the bank and I said ‘okay, we will talk about it.’ So one thing led to the other, I still travelled abroad and came back.

    What attracted you to him?

Nothing! The first time, I didn’t see anything. He was so arrogant because of his family background. The first time I said, what is wrong with this young man, why is he all over the place? Gradually things changed.

How did he convince you to join the ministry?

He didn’t convince me. He travelled and because we all started the ministry together, we got along. My husband is somebody that is hungry for the Word; he always wants to improve in everything he is doing. So he wanted to go to Morris Cerullo abroad, and he went. When he went, he said God spoke to him. I was very much involved in the work of the ministry. I have been an usher, sang in the choir and had got involved in almost every department of the ministry. I was working somewhere in Adeniyi Jones as secretary to a white man. The company has folded up now. He said, God spoke to him that I should give up the job but he didn’t tell me. He said ‘God, if it is you that is saying it, talk to her.’

Then, the board came at a time saying that for the input that you are making, why don’t you come full time? I said to them that I would pray about it and I am the first out of many children. I have lots of sisters, a brother and my mother who depended on me because my father is late. So when I was praying, I told God the situation and when I later told my mum she agreed. That showed that the money that I usually send to her for the upkeep, I won’t be able to meet up. When I had my first child, my mum came down and I told her about it, she said the Lord would provide. She said the best thing you can do is to work for God and I threw in the towel. I told him that I didn’t want any allowance for one year, I wanted to prove God.

What were the first few years in marriage like?

It’s been 35 years together, what can I remember now? Bishop is somebody that can defend you anytime. He loves you, he stands for you and he is not somebody that would deny you once he knows that you are doing the right thing. One of the two things I know how to cook, he taught me. He is a good cook. It’s so funny because he comes from a family of six boys, few girls and they always have people living with them. I don’t know how he learnt how to cook those vegetable soups. Everywhere we go, people ask what you are giving this man? He is looking younger; it is just the grace of God. His schedule is out of this world. I have begged him to slow down, to reduce his schedule but he said, ‘my friend, all you need to do is pray for me.’

The other day, my daughter said no, I should leave him because if he reduces his schedule, he may start becoming sick. Today he is not in; he comes back from Ijebu Ode to Abuja. As I was coming back from Aba on Monday, he was coming back from Warri. He is also a funny person. If you play games with Bishop, you would fall on the floor, especially ludo. If he is winning you, just resign because he would play and laugh at you that you would say you don’t want to play again. Bishop is quite interesting to be with. I am a football lover. I love football, love tennis and my club is Chelsea. They won the league last season and I love the manager. I also like some of the players. I started liking the club since Drogba was there. Bishop is Man U, when they lose he gets angry. We watch football together and laugh. When we are watching a match, we sit on the rug in the sitting room and because I like tennis, he now became interested in lawn tennis.

Some women feel lonely when their husbands travel all the time. How do you balance all that?

When you know what God has called you to do, there won’t be a problem. My schedule has also increased but before then I knew that he had to do this. He had to be used by God, that is what gives him joy and he has to be happy.

Are there times you wished he was always around?

Not that way. There’s been a time I felt somehow, especially the time that we were facing trials. I said ‘God this is too much, you just have to help us with this.’ We got married and the following week he went to Morris Cerullo for six months.

    What happened to your honeymoon?

We went to Ghana for a few days and came back. The women in my church said they had never seen anything like this, but I told them that he had to go. God needs his attention. I knew I was marrying a man of God and I knew that his time would be demanded. I use this experience now to talk to my pastors’ wives.

Looking at your experience with Bishop, what is your take on men handling chores in marriage?

I believe that a man should help his wife. Thank God, for this part of the world, you have people that can help us. Over there, the man does it and the woman does it at home. Even in Nigeria, I have walked up to my pastor’s house and I saw the man cutting okro. They just came back from abroad and the people present were shocked. So, I asked what was wrong with that, if the man can help in any way, but don’t force it on him. Let him help out of his own freewill. I don’t see anything wrong with it.

How do you handle what Bishop wears?

He is the one teaching me. He is very stylish. Honestly, Bishop can put things together. My daughter would say, ‘mummy if you want to buy anything for me, let daddy see it first.’ You can see it in the way he dresses. When I was younger, I didn’t really care about looking stylish or corporate. All I know is wear your clothes and be neat.

Let’s talk about the women’s group. What are some of the achievements over the years?

A lot. We started with just ten women, but now if you come on the last Thursday of the month and in the mornings between 9 and 12 noon, you would see up to three or four thousand women here. When I turned 60, my women knew my passion. I told them that women are dying of cervical cancer and that project was the gift that they had for me. They planned a conference on this, now we are going from state to state to test women free.

About 8000 women are beneficiary and for the general screening we had about 12,000 beneficiaries. Then we have the widows empowerment and maybe because my mother is a widow. She is 85 years and still around. At a point, God spoke to me to look at how my mother toiled and that I should start something. That year, I sent some people to some villages and we touched some widows. These women prayed for me even though they didn’t know me. When the schools in Nigeria were facing depression, this gave birth to the Word of Power Group of Schools.

Everything God used me to pioneer comes out of a burden. We also have the rehabilitation centre for girls and some of them were sent out of the house by their parents or the fact that the person who made them pregnant is nowhere to be found. So what we do is to take them into the home, take them to the hospital and pay the hospital bill. When they have their babies they decide what they want to do with the babies. I don’t get involved with that. My interest is that you must go to school or attend a vocation after giving birth to the baby.

Working in the vineyard of God comes with its perks. Okonkwo eyes win at Lobi Stars

FC IfeanyiUbah right back, Chibuzor Okonkwo is positive his side will not comeback empty-handed from the tough league clash at the 2015 Federation Cup finalists, Lobi Stars.

The newcomers will be the guests of the Pride of Benue in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match day 25 clash on Sunday at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi.

Okonkwo said the Nnewi outfit match day 23 clash away win at Enugu Rangers is the tonic to go for repeat performance at Lobi Stars.

“Nobody gave us any chance at Enugu Rangers but we shamed our doubters with a hard fought 3-2 win in Enugu.

“Right now the momentum is quite high for Lobi Stars coming on the heels of their successful Federation Cup semifinals victory against Enugu Rangers.

“Naturally, Lobi Stars will come out tough at least to convince their supporters that the Cup win against Rangers was not a fluke but deserved.

“However, we have quality bench in the persons of John Obuh, Daniel Amokachi, Ike Shorunmi as well as key experienced players going for us at the moment.

“We are certain to get something decent and positive at Lobi Stars no matter how hard the home side turn out to be.

“Rangers’ treat may not be too far away for Lobi Stars as we are determined not to leave Makurdi tie empty-handed.

“We need all the points we can lay our hands on right now to further improve on our position on the league log,” said the former Enugu Rangers strongman to supersport.com.

FC Ifeanyiubah are 10th on the top flight log on 32 points from possible 72 though with a home match at hand against Federation Cup finalists, Akwa United in Nnewi.

    • Wants team to acquire more experienced players

FC IfeanyiUbah defender, Chibuzo Okonkwo has revealed to SportingLife that the Anambra Warriors came out of the Oriental Derby clash with Enugu Rangers victorious because he and his team mates vowed to welcome new coach, Dan Amokachi with a win in Enugu.

Before the match, FC IfeanyiUbah found it difficult to win matches under former Technical Adviser, Sam Obuh who has been promoted to the post of club’s Football Director, but they got their bearing after two late goals wrecked the Flying Antelopes.

Okonkwo, an out of favour Super Eagles’ defender, told SportingLife that the players were not happy with their unimpressive results in the last six matches where they only picked three points from possible 18 and that they promised to surprise Enugu Rangers at their home. He said they were elated to get their wishes.

“It was a tough victory for us but we had to do our job because we wanted to stop the unimpressive results in our previous games. We (the players) had series of meetings and pep talks to ensure that we bounce back to victory against Rangers and we were happy everything went our way.

“We are also delighted to have coach Daniel Amokachi in charge of the team now and we are eager to get more points for him and the owner of the club, Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah,” Okonkwo told SportingLife.

The former Libya based defender, however, admonished the management of the club to get more experienced players to beef up the team so that the Anambra Warriors could go places in the remaining matches of the season.

FC IfeanyiUbah were bundled out of the Federation Cup by Nasarawa United last week and they are presently 10th on the league table with 32 points from 23 matches.

Their mid week tie with Akwa United will be on hold because of the involvement of the latter in the semi final of the Federation Cup against Nasarawa United in Abeokuta same day.
