Why Igbo leaders met in Owerri, by Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday said the recent gathering of Igbo leaders in Owerri, the state capital, under the Igbo Unity Forum, was not a launch pad for Igbo Presidency.

The governor said the meeting was to rekindle the spirit of resilience and determination among the Igbo.

He added that the continued outcry of neglect was alien to the Igbo culture of hard work and industry.

Okoroch, who addressed reporters in Owerri, noted that the greatest challenge holding down the Ndigbo was disunity.

He said: “When we come together, we can solve all our problems as a people. This is because we cannot continue to cry about marginalisation but we should rise up and build our place.

“The essence of the gathering of Igbo leaders in Owerri was not to talk about or prepare for Igbo Presidency but to mobilise our people to come together and build an Igbo nation that is economically viable.”

Okorocha added: “When people talk about Igbo Presidency, I don’t get excited because I believe that anybody who has something to offer should lead the country, irrespective of where he comes from. This is because we may have an Igbo President who may turn out to be a disappointment.

“Just like when our people keep crying about marginalisation. But there was a time we had everything, like the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senate President, Chief of Army Staff, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), among others. But today, we have nothing to show for these positions. So, our priority now is to build our place and attract development. But at the right time, we will have a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.”

Okorocha wants pay cut for workers

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State said yesterday he was  considering reducing the number of work days in the state from five to three, to enable the government cut salaries.

Briefing journalists on the state of affairs in Owerri, the governor said the reduction of work days would enable workers to attend to other activities that would generate money to supplement their monthly salaries to take care of their families.

He said: “I encourage Imo workers to find additional things to do to support their families because of the economic situation we are facing in Nigeria.

“We are considering to reduce the working days from five to three in Imo, so that workers will use the rest of the days to work and support their families.”

Okorocha, who was not specific on when the plan might  commence, added that Imo government was equally planning to review workers’ salaries downward.

He said that in spite of the current payment of 70 percent of salaries to workers, the state still paid the highest salary scale among South-Eastern states of Abia, Anabmbra, Ebonyi and Enugu.

“Directors in these other South-Eastern states receive something a little above N90, 000 while in Imo they receive more than N100, 000.

“We intend to clear salary arrears up to July by next week. After that, we will consider downward review of salary to workers to be at par with other states of South-East,’’ he said.

On the just-concluded rerun election, Okorocha commended Imo people for electing the candidates of APC in Imo North Senatorial District, Isiala Mbano and Oru East State Constituencies.

He said with the victory, APC had shown that it was strong in the South-East and should be given its due right.

“With these victories, it shows that APC candidates won most of the national and state assembly seats during the 2015 general elections.

“I call on the leadership of the National Assembly (Senate), to correct the abnormality in its leadership which resulted in an opposition member occupying the Deputy Senate President seat,’’ he said.

On his urban renewal programme, Mr. Okorocha said the relocation of Ekeukwu-Owerri market, Orji and Nekede Mechanic villages to Avu was irreversible.

“From Monday, Aug. 1, a taskforce to enforce the relocation order for the mechanics will commence work, and I am advising vehicle owners not to take their vehicles to any of these places from Monday,’’ he said.

  • We’ll make Ekweremadu lose DSP post, says Okorocha

We’ll make Ekweremadu lose DSP post, says Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday said Ike Ekweremadu’s position as Deputy Senate President may no longer be tenable, with the expected emergence of Benjamin Uwajumogu as Imo North senator-elect.

Uwajumogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent  Athan Acholonu with almost  9,000 votes in the results declared after weekend’s rerun.

The polls were declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) because of violence in some of the electoral units. Elections in the area with about 15,000 registered voters will be held before the final results are declared.

Okorocha is confident that Uwajumogu will win the seat.

Speaking during a thank-you party organised for APC members, the governor described Ekweremadu’s emergence as the deputy senate president to an APC Senate President as an aberration.

He said: “The position of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is at moment under serious threat because in no distant time, Uwajumogu will emerge as the APC Senator from Imo State.

“Senator Ekweremadu knowns that such a development is not only feasible but inevitable and that was why he fully funded the candidate of the PDP in the rerun senatorial poll in Okigwe zone. He relocated to the state for three days before the election date.

“The victory of the APC in the rerun poll for Okigwe senatorial zone is a “victory for the whole of Southeast APC in general and the people of the geo-political zone in particular” .

The governor canvassed that “the National Assembly members from Imo State on the platform of PDP should be recalled to face proper election because none of them won an election but  used their Federal might and the security agencies to write results for themselves in the 2015 election. And now that sanity has been restored, they should be made to come and face real election.

“The PDP in the state has never won any election since 2003, but has written results for themselves, using intimidation and harassment to achieve their goal of producing results and forcing INEC to declare them winners on the basis of the false results.”

Okorocha added: “It appears it has become part of the political culture of the state that every election in the state must be declared inconclusive; otherwise, there was no reason Saturday’s election could have been declared inconclusive because of one ward (Osuachara) out of the 64 wards in the Okigwe senatorial zone and with the APC candidate leading his rival with more than eight thousand votes.”

  • Okorocha reshuffles cabinet

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Monday carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle to strengthen the “key ministries” in the state.

A statement signed by the Chief Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, disclosed that there was no particular reason for the reshuffle aside from the need to optimize the productivity of the affected commissioners.

The statement said, “The reshuffle was not for any other reason but for strategic reasons and optimum productivity on the parts of the individual commissioners. They had all done well in their former ministries and the governor in his wisdom believed that they could do better in their current portfolios.

“The truth is that none of them was shifted for non-performance as being rumored in some quarters. They have all been outstanding in the discharge of their responsibilities and the governor had the feeling that they could do more in their new ministries.”

Those affected were the Commissioner for Information, Strategy, Youths and Sports, Engr. Chidi Ibeh, who was moved to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Hon. Ifeanyi Ararume (Jnr) who was formerly in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was moved to the Ministry of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and Internal Resources.

The Commissioner for IGR, Chief Vitalis Ajumbe, was moved to the Ministry of Information and Public Utility, while Hon. Rodney Ajaelu was appointed Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Public Safety.

“The governor wishes the concerned commissioners success in their new ministries,” the statement added.

Deputy hails Okorocha for uniting Ndigbo

Imo State Deputy Governor Eze Madumere has hailed Governor Rochas Okorocha for uniting Ndigbo to put their resources together for the development of the zone.

Madumere said the governor’s directive was a step in the right direction.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Uche Onwuchekwa, the deputy governor was elated by Okorocha’s effort, particularly reconciliation of factions in Ohaneze Ndigbo, which hitherto made the Pan-Igbo group a toothless bulldog.

He described Okorocha as a visionary leader known for his love and sacrifices for the peace and unity of Ndigbo.

According to him, the governor achieved same feat under Nigeria Peace Forum and other platforms.

Madumere praised the parties in the peace accord, saying their sacrifices were by the Ndigbo and would be remembered by generations.

The deputy governor noted that a united Igbo had the best opportunity to re-launch itself into a progressive place in Nigeria and beyond.

But he regretted that Ndigbo controlled 30 per cent investments in other zones but had nothing on ground at home.

Madumere said the effort of Igbo past heroes should not be allowed to waste.

He called for a more united Ndigbo with new thinking, approach towards achieving a strong, virile, sustainable and self-sufficient economy.

  • ‘Imo people unfair to Okorocha’

    ‘Imo people unfair to Okorocha’

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has, for some time, remained one of the most talked about or criticized governors in the South-East zone. In a brief chat with newsmen, Godwyn Akabogu, Okorocha’s former aide, gives fresh insight into the personality and political philosophy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governor and other current issues, including political developments in Imo State and the South East zone in general. Sam Egburonu reports

GODWYN Akabogu could not take it when he was told that many Nigerians believe Governor Rochas Okorocha is too ambitious. “Some think he wants to become the leader of the Igbo race while others think he wants to be Nigeria’s President.” Even before the reporter could complete the statement, Akabogu interrupted: “You see, people don’t even understand who he is; to start with, my people, Imo State people, I will tell you without mincing words that they have been unfair to the Rochas Okorocha’s administration. Judging from what he has done in Imo today, I believe they are unfair to him.”

Explaining that he believed Okorocha’s public image does not fully capture the reality, he said:  “You see, for the first time, I challenge every Imo son and daughter; let that person come out and show me, since the inception of Imo State, any previous government that has outperformed Rochas Anayo Okorocha in four years.”

Someone interrupted him there, pointing out that Achike Udenwa and Okorocha’s immediate predecessor, Ikedi Ohakim, reportedly did well.

He looked unruffled and said rather calmly, “all those people you just mentioned did their own quota, but whatever they did is nothing compared to what Anayo Okorocha has done in past four years. What Achike Udenwa did in eight years, Rochas Anayo Okorocha surpassed it in four years.

Those who say Okorocha is not working but only engaging in hoodwinking the people are simply charlatans. I can tell you authoritatively that Rochas Anayo Okorocha has performed well.

I have travelled the length and breadth of Imo State, the projects Okorocha has done speaks for itself. You will see all the projects Okorocha achieved and you will discover that all these things speak for themselves. Are you talking about roads? Are you talking about the schools he renovated; I mean, where would you start to access him? Then, cast your mind back to the previous administrations, what do they have to show for their governance; both Ikedi Ohakim and Achike Udenwa? And my pain is this; what the Igbo sons and daughters do not understand is that Rochas is the anointed son of the late Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu,” he said.

Again, he was corrected or rather challenged: “It is believed that former Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State is Ojukwu’s anointed son, politically.” He smiled and said emphatically, “Peter Obi is a later arrangement. I will give you a story which happened far back in the year 2000 in Rochas Okorocha’s home in Abuja. It was at a meeting and there was Sam Mbakwe, there was Ezeife, there was Ojelu Igbo Ozi and there was Dim Chukwemeka Ojukwu in attendance. Then you have the errand boys that were serving him then, people like myself, people like the present Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu; people like Ogueri Nwerem, people like Shyna Iwuanyawu, people like Ideato Okolie…all these guys were in this meeting. And then, after Owelle Rochas Okorocha finished addressing these Igbo leaders inside his living room, Ojukwu said “My son, my son.”

On what Okorocha said that made Ojukwu to confer on him such a benevolence statement of appreciation, Akabogu said:

“He took Ojukwu down the memory lane and explained to him how it is easier to be a bridge between the east, the west and the north without going to war. He gave him an analytic precedent on how the Igbos could have consolidated their gains without fighting a war and that made Ojukwu to acknowledge that, the young man has intellectual prowess. However, the most inspiring one, which is the second encounter between Ojukwu and Owele Rochas Okorocha is the one which crowned it up and told us why Okorocha is the anointed and ordained leader of the Igbos. It was Ojukwu himself that said it: I will never cook such a sublime story up, the pictures are there; the people who covered that event at Aspanda in Lagos in 2001 are still alive. That is after the Abuja meeting. This meeting at Aspanda was convened by Eze Ndigbo of Lagos, Chief Ohazulike. At that meeting, Ojukwu and some other prominent Igbo leaders were there. Anayo Rochas Okorocha was there. It was Anayo Rochas Okorocha that introduced Ojukwu to the podium after giving an inspiring speech. After that inspiring speech, Ojukwu took the microphone, turned and looked at him; he said “My son, my son, the more I see you grow up, the more I go down.”

Reminded that it was Peter Obi that catered for Ojukwu up to his dying moment, he said, “He (Peter Obi) can afford to do all that because he rode on Ojukwu’s back. Obi became the governor on the back of Ikemba Nnewi. Hitherto, before that time, nobody knew who Peter Obi was. So, he rose on Ikemba’s back. But Ikemba, being a political juggernaut that he is, he knew who will take the Igbos to the Promised Land and all the statements I just mentioned to you now are subject to verification. The people that recorded the video of the event at Aspanda are alive and they can produce that video. Anayo Rochas Okorocha himself might not even remember all these statements; he may not remember all these other things I am tracing their history right now. But the history is there to speak for itself; they will listen to Ikemba’s speech himself at Aspanda because all those things were noted.”

So, why would he conclude today that Imo people are unfair to their governor? “They are unfair to Anayo Rochas Okorocha. This is a man who gave them free education; he gave them different kinds of infrastructural development, roads and lot of transformation. I saw this myself; it is not like hearsay. At the end of the day, why won’t you give honour to whom honour is due? Why don’t you give credit to whom credit is due? There is a saying in my local dialect, it says, “Ekele Onye akidi na ke ogworo, ya gwota kwa ozo,” which means “when you thank the person that prepared green beans for you, he would be energised to prepare another dish for you”. At Imo State what are they saying? Their slogan is this government of the family, by the family and for the family.”

This criticism notwithstanding, Akabogu insists that Okorocha remains the authentic Igbo leader presently, adding, “I don’t know the dream he has right now, but what I can tell you is this, if not Rochas Anayo Okorocha for President from the Igbo land, who else? I have had the opportunity of working with Senator Hope Uzodinma, I also worked with the political camp of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; I had the opportunity of working with the political camp of Senator Ifeanyi Ararume and even with the political camp of Martins Agbaso and I can state unequivocally that none of them can match Governor Rochas Okorocha, all factors considered.”

  • Promote peace, unity, Okorocha urges Corps members

IMO State Governor Rochas Okorocha has advised National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to promote peaceful co-existence and unity.

The governor said building unity and peace remained the core objectives of the NYSC since its establishment in 1973.

Okorocha spoke at the swearing-in of the NYSC Batch “A” 2016 (Stream II) at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Eziama Obaire, Orlu Local Government Area. He was represented by his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere.

While congratulating the Corps members for scaling through academic hurdles, the governor urged them to make friends with people from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures, saying they are all brothers irrespective of their mothers’ tongues.

Okorocha advised them to exhibit high-level dedication, commitment and diligence in the outlined activities at the camp, saying the “Nigerian spirit” is resilient, enterprising and patriotic.

He urged the Corps members to take skill acquisition programme seriously, noting that the programme was designed to make them entrepreneurs and self-reliant. He promised his administration’s preparedness to continue its support for the scheme, warning against destructive vices.

The Imo State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Isaac Fasanu, hailed Okorocha for building befitting orientation camp for the Corps members.

He said NYSC was created to give youths physical and mental preparedness to attain their future goals. He said the scheme’s programmes were geared towards instilling zeal and patriotism in the Corps members.

  • Accolades as Okorocha presents scorecard

    Accolades as Okorocha presents scorecard

It was indeed a night of chest thumping and back patting as Imo State Commissioners and selected government appointees, filed out to present the scorecard of their various ministries and agencies to mark Governor Rochas Okorocha’s five years in Office.

The ovations were thunderous as the charged crowd hailed the Governor for the almost endless list of verifiable and people oriented projects.

Looking at the faces of the dignitaries that sat at the front roll in the crowded auditorium, one could not miss the cloak of shock that is intermittently eased by flashes of smile as they watched the documentaries of the five-year achievements of the Rochas Okorocha’s administration.

The audience at the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC), majority of them visitors, may have been wondering if the projects they were watching on the large screen were actually executed in Imo State, giving its meager resources.

Much to the admiration of the crowd, the commissioners of the various ministries and other government appointees took turn to render the scorecard of their ministries and parastatals, which were backed by motion pictures of the projects.

Apart from merely showcasing the projects, the commissioners and the appointees went step further to educate the audience on the benefits of these projects and the business opportunities therein.

From the education sector to the health sector, judiciary, infrastructure, power, security, rural development, agriculture, trade and commerce, women and youth development, job creation, the number and quality of projects presented, showed that the Okorocha’s administration, five years after, has delivered on its campaign promise of rescuing the state.

Another interesting side to the well attended event was the competition among the commissioners, who were struggling to beat each other to the prizes to be won.

The governor had announced that the commissioner or government appointee that will emerge as the overall best in terms of performance and number of projects executed will go home with ten million naira and a plot of land in the state capital, the second person will get five million and a plot of land also in the state capital, while the third person will get a plot.

So it was reminiscent of a school debate as the commissioners and appointees fought to impress on the audience, especially the members of the panel why their Ministries should be chosen as the best.

Some of them did very well to convince the panelists, while others managed to showcase the achievements of their Ministries within the allowed time of ten minutes.

Opening the presentation, the current Chief of Staff and former Commissioner for Lands, Planning and Urban Development, Chief Uche Nwosu, reeled out numerous projects executed through his office to include, the Odenigbo Lodge, which serves as the Presidential Lodge for visiting VIPs, the Imo Treasury House, the Imo International Convention Centre, the renovation of the moribund Imo Concorde Hotel and the construction of a befitting Government House.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Emma Ibediro, presented before the perplexed audience, rural road projects that were unprecedented in the history of the state.

According to him, the Rescue Mission Administration in the last five years have constructed not less than 35 kilometer roads in each of the 27 Local Government Areas.

He prided that the road revolution have opened the economies of the rural communities by attracting investors, especially in the agricultural sector.

Another milestone achievement recorded within the time under review according to Ibediro, was the building of 27 brand new General Hospitals in each of the Council Areas.

The list was endless as the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Getrude Oduka, presented 305 schools built by the Okorocha’s administration in the last five years.

Not only that, the Rescue Mission Administration on inauguration, according to her, introduced the first ever free education programme from primary to tertiary institution, a development she said has impacted positively on the number of Imo indigenes enrolling in schools annually.

  • Okorocha inaugurates 135-member Elders’ Advisory Council

Okorocha inaugurates 135-member Elders’ Advisory Council

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday inaugurated a 135-member Elders’ Advisory Council to advise as well as criticise his administration when need be.

The council has five elders chosen from each of the 27 local government areas.

During the inauguration at the Government House in Owerri, the state capital, Okorocha said its role would not only be mere advisory but would also include constructive criticisms of the government.

The governor said his administration carefully selected members of the council, ensuring that none of them was in politics or had political affiliation.

He said: “The Elders’ Council must be independent. Members would always advise the government. It would equally offer the government constructive criticisms from time to time. That is why we have made the council to be independent. We have also taken time in the choice of the members of the council to ensure that they are not into partisan politics and do not have any strong political affiliation with any of the political parties or politician. The essence is to ensure credibility of their personalities and what they set out to do.

“The elders in the council would also serve as the bridge between the political parties, elders across the nation and even between politicians within and outside the state. This is in line with our belief that elders are those who understand the past and have a clear view of the future; people who are in custody of the history of the past and what must be done to correct the mistakes of the past to bring improvement to the future.”

Okorocha added: “Members of the council are those not younger than 70 years; they must have retired, if they were politicians or working, and must have been people of proven integrity, who would not be afraid to say the truth, no mater whose ox is gored.”

Admonishing members of the council, the governor said: “To whom much is given, much is expected. You are also expected to bridge the gap between the government and the people. You should also restore the fallen integrity of the elders in the state by being brave and truthful in the discharge of your duties.”

Dr. E. J. K. Onyewuchi was elected Chairman of the Council, while Prince Pat Abii was elected Secretary.

Onyewuchi thanked the governor for acknowledging the role and importance of elders in a democratic setting.

He assured that the council would achieve its lofty goal for the glory of the state.

  •  Okorocha has not hijacked Ohanaeze, say youths

Okorocha has not hijacked Ohanaeze, say youths

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council worldwide has flayed the accusation that Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has hijacked the Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

In a statement yesterday, the group’s President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro,  said he never granted any interview on Okorocha and wondered where the report emanated from.

“There was never a time that  I, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro made such a statement and at no time did I speak to the correspondent who carried the story to that effect. It was a figment of his imagination.

“ It’s pure jungle journalism geared towards  ruffling  feathers and causing  disaffection in Igboland. It’s a grand design by enemies of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council to create tension and confusion in the polity.

“Our own Owelle Ndigbo Rochas Okorocha is like a father to me and he is building a befitting secretariat for Ndigbo at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Headquarters for which the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council has severally lauded him . We could not at the same time speak from both sides of the mouth by insinuating that his magnamimous act was for a non-existent grandplan to hijack Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”
